Despite big shift, powder coatings

market to remain steady
The global powder coatings
market has lost a key player with
Ferros exit. The company sold its
powder coatings business to
Rohm and Haas and Akzo Nobel
for $160 M in 2002. Analysts do
not predict more mergers and
acquisitions as a result of Ferros
exit, stating that powder coatings
is not a core business for Ferro.
Other major players in the
powder coatings sector, which like
Ferro do not have powder
coatings as a core business are
DuPont and BASF, both primarily
chemical companies. In powder
coatings, acquisitions involving
smaller players mean taking on
less profitable assets like liquid
coatings. The weak economy has
impacted growth rates for powder
coatings. In 2002 growth was
only 1-2% compared to 7% /y if
GDP was around 3-4%. The main
end-use applications for powder
coatings are metal decorations,
consumer appliances and
automobiles, accounting for 83%
of market demand. All are
weathering the downturn in the
economy. In 2000 the North
American powder coatings market
was valued at $1.2 bn, with the
US accounting for 85% of this. In
2001, the US market for powder
coatings was pegged at 500 M
lbs. The west and east European
markets are valued at $1.4-$1.5
bn and Pacific Asian markets at
$750 M. Rest of the world
markets account for $370 M. In
2000 the global powder coatings

NEW
PRODUCTS
New developments from APV Baker
APV Baker have advanced their
technology in leaps and bounds
since they pioneered the
introduction of twin screw
extruders some thirty years ago.
Now that the market for powder
production mixing and
compounding machinery has
become so competitive, they have
introduced further innovations to
meet the ever demanding needs
of high volume powder producers.
Features added to maximize
control and record production
data have ensured good batch to
batch reproducibility, and met the
needs of the industry.
Now they are launching two
new innovations. The first is a
new generation of laboratory
scale twin screw extruders with
increased screw speed capability
of up to 1000rpm. This allows
exact replication of laboratory
work to industrial production
where the trend is to run at
higher rpm. A more compact
drive arrangement has been
introduced which incorporates an
in-line servo motor and planetary
gearbox. An additional option is
full data logging of all product
control parameters.
The second innovation is a
new range of compact chill rolls
designed as a simple compact
unit. Cooling and kibbling
operations have been
incorporated within a single unit,
and the conventional cooling
conveyor has been replaced with
a belt cassette. This gives more
intense and efficient cooling to
the correct temperature for
kibbling, and reduces floor space

demand by up to 75%. The belt
cassette is easily removable,
maximizing productivity through
simple operation and minimum
maintenance, with maximum
access for cleaning without the
need for tools. Standard features
include an integrated control
panel, and the ability to be used
with all types of extruder for
powder manufacture. These chill
rolls, available in 100, 200 and
350kg/hour outputs, are ideal for
situations where frequent colour
changes are necessary.

New UV absorber for powder coatings

Ciba Specialty Chemicals has just
introduced Ciba Tinuvin 405, a
new UV absorber especially
designed for powder coatings. An
ideal melt point, excellent photopermanence, thermal stability and
low colour enable Tinuvin 405 to
fulfill the high performance and
durability needs of even the most
demanding applications.
Tinuvin 405 is recommended
for catalyzed acrylic or polyester
resins. Its low melting temperature
also makes it ideal for glycidyl
methacrylate (GMA) type powder
coatings. Typical application areas
include automotive powder clear
coats, powder coatings for
plastics and wood, and high
performance industrial coatings.
The absorption properties of
Tinuvin 405 make it an attractive
selection for the stabilization of
high-performance UV-cured
systems. In such systems, the
use of Tinuvin 405 together with
photoinitiators that absorb at or
above 400nm, such as Ciba
Irgacure 819, leads to excellent
through cure.
When used in conjunction with
a suitable Hindered Amine Light
Stabilizer (HALS), Tinuvin 405
can dramatically extend the
lifetime of coatings, as shown by
good colour, gloss and physical

property retention. Tinuvin 405 is
free from possible interactions in
amine and/or metal catalyzed
coating systems that can
occasionally lead to yellowing
with other types of UV absorbers.

Super solids: new coatings

technology from DuPont
DuPont has introduced an
innovative ultra-low emission
technology that can reduce
solvent emissions of automotive
paints. The novel technology,
Super Solids, has lowered the
volatile organic compound (VOC)
emissions of the final protective
clear coat used on the Dodge
Durango model at the Newark,
DE, plant by 25%. The company
was able to obtain the 25%
reduction by raising the solids
content of the coating from the
industry high-solids coatings
standard of 50% solids and 50%

solvent to 65%. The Chrysler plant

has been the first automotive
facility to utilize the new painting
technology, which also significantly
boosts scratch resistance
properties of the clear coat. The
innovative technology reportedly
performs well compared to nonliquid powder coatings. This
assessment was based on the
overall inventory of energy usage
and emissions from the time the
product is initially produced until it
is used on the vehicles surface.
Auto assembly facilities can
achieve as much as $20 M in
savings since the technology can
be sprayed on existing paint
lines, according to DuPont.
