PART A: INTORDUCTION
India is a large producer of inland fish, ranking next only to Japan.
Coastal aquaculture is a significant contributor to aquaculture
production. This is mainly composed of shrimps (Penaeus monodon
and P. Indicus) and other species cultured like lobster, crab, molluscan
(edible oyster, pearl oyster, mussel and clam), sea cucumber, marine
finfish (mullets, groupers, seabass, milkfish and pearlspot) and
seaweed. The sea food industry in India has come a long way and
today a wide range of seafood products are exported to more than 70
countries in the world. It contributed 65.88% of the total exports of
marine products from the country. The Indian seafood industry has
undertaken a major exercise of up gradation of its facilities to meet
new international requirements. India is a large exporter to the
European Union, Africa, Middle East and China. There is a bright
scope for starting new units in this field.
Marine fishing in Gujarat has emerged as an important economic
activity with reference to food security, employment generation,
poverty reduction and foreign exchange earnings. Its share in the
State Domestic Product (SDP) was 0.84 percent in 1980-81, which
crossed 1.60 percent at the close of 1990s. With the total annual
production value of Rs. 1700 crores and self employment opportunity
for around 1,00,000 active fishermen, this sector is an important
source of livelihood to over 2,75,000 people. Fish is used as a source
of food either in raw or dry state. It has protein which is amino acids.
Another means of utilization of fish is the manufacture of fish meal
and fish oil.
The Port of Jakhau is a fair weather port on the Gulf of Kutch. Jakhau
Port is famous fishing port of Gujarat, where the fishing communities
from almost all of the Gujarat Coast migrates during the eight months
fishing season. All types of fishing boats, Tony (small fibre boat),
trawlers (bigger wooden craft), Pillani (vary small long boat) and
Hodas (country crafts) are found there. All types of fish, pomfrets,
salmons, cheris, crabs, lobsters, narsingas, shrimps etc. are found in
large variety and volume there. The life of the village of Jakhau and
the town of Naliya depend upon Jakhau fishing Port.

Fisheries are an important sector in India--it provides employment to


millions of people and contributes to food security of the country as
well as direct employment millions of fisher people besides others
dependent on this sectors.
Jakhau is also famous for salt production and many companies have
set up their plants for production of industrial salt and iodize salt.
Bharat Salt Refineries Ltd and Jakhau Salt Com. Pvt Ltd are two
leading companies in Jakhau which engaged in Production of raw salt,
industrial salt and iodized salt.
