wishtorepresent?TherearealotofpositivestoWard5includingsomereallygreatparks,
communitygardens,schoolsandadiversepopulation.Someofthechallengesaretheneedfor
morestreetlights,additionalandrepairedsidewalksandincreasedsafetyprecautionsfor
pedestriansandcyclists.

years,andbesidesWestSalemIhavelivedineverysectionofthiscityatsomepoint.Ibelieve
thisgivesmeanintimateappreciateforboththepositivesandchallengesthatthecouncilfaces
whenmakingdecisions.Byhavingfamilyandlongtermfriendshipsherewithpeoplewhoare
investedinourcityandtowhomIwouldanswerto,givemeevenmorereasontomake
thoughtful,educatedandinformeddecisions.

businesscards,lawnsigns,remitenvelopesandothergeneralneedsforrunningacampaignsuch
asprintingneeds,clipboards,waterandsnacksforcanvasser,etc.

Ihadapastduehospitalbillfor$280,Ihadajudgementagainstmein2005for$1351fora
paydayloanItookoutin2004duetopressurefromanabusiveboyfriendatthetime.Also,
duringthetimeIwaswithhimasIwastheonlyoneworkingIgavehimcashtopaybills
(electric,phone,etc.)whichIfoundoutmonthslaterhedidnotpayandthereforecausedmeto
bedelinquent.IpaidtheseassoonasIfoundoutandwasabletocatchupandmakeall
payments.Additionally,whilelivingpaychecktopaycheckIaccruedsomemedicalbillsthatI
couldnotaffordtopayandhadtofilebankruptcyaround15years.Theseareallreasonswhyit
issoimportanttometodoallIcantomakesurepeoplehaveaccesstohealthcareandother
services.

A. AffordableHousing:Salemcurrentlyhasonly2.23%rentalvacancyand1.16%sale
vacancy.Lowavailabilitycreateshigherprices,makingaffordablehousingincreasingly
difficult.
B. Homelessness:Theriseinthehomelesspopulation,lengthywaitlistsforshelters,temporary
andpermanenthousingandneedforsafetyinourparksandopenspacesallpresent
challengesthatneedtoberemediedsoonerratherthanlater
C. Transportation:WemusttacklethepublictransportationchallengesfacingSaleminorderto
fostersustainableeconomicgrowthandcommunitydevelopment.Weneedtobewillingto
thinkoutsidetheboxregardingpartnershipsinordertoincreasemasstransitaswellassafe
pedestrianandbicyclistsaccess.
10.Whatdoyouseeasotherimportantissues?WhiletalkingwithWard5communitymembers
itisclearthatweneedtoworkonbeingmoretransparentaswellasfindingnewandinnovative
waystomakingcitygovernmentmoreaccessible.EveryonedeservestoberepresentedatCity
Councilandwecandoabetterjobofmakingsurepeoplehaveanopendialoguewiththe
Council.
