TITLE
Provision of eye type damper in lieu of stem type dampers on high adhesion bogies of WDG3A
& WDM3D (with equaliser & compensating mechanism) locomotives.

2.

BACKGROUND
Stem type vertical hydraulic damper to RDSO drawing no. SK.VL-328 was recommended at
primary stage of WDG3A & WDM3D (with equaliser and compensating mechanism)
locomotives. Zonal Railways have reported problem of mounting bolts failures, loosening of
these dampers.

OBJECT
This Modification sheet content to overcome the problem of failure of stem type damper in
WDG3A & WDM3D (with equaliser & compensating beam mechanism) locomotives.

4.

INVESTIGATION
High adhesion bogies fitted on WDG3A & WDM3D (with equaliser & compensating mechanism)
locomotives have been provided with stem type dampers. Zonal Railways have reported in the
recent past about failure of their fastening bolts during service. The matter has been
investigated in detail at RDSO, and it is observed that during cocking mode of dampers, the
bolts are getting stressed and therefore, are breaking.
To overcome the above problem, it has been decided to provide eye type dampers, which virtue
of its design takes care of this limitation.

APPLICATION TO CLASS OF LOCOMOTIVES


WDG3A & WDM3D (with equaliser & compensating beam mechanism) locomotives.

MODIFCATION CONTENT
Following steps should be followed:
I. Remove the existing stem type damper bracket from the bogie frames with due care.
II. Fit & weld the eye type damper bracket on the bogie frames as per locations shown in
drawing no. SK.VL-388 for WDG3A or drawing no. 53.04.02 for WDM3D loco bogie as per
sketch given in Annexure I.
III. Remove the existing stem type damper bracket from the equaliser beams and fit eye type
damper bracket (item 16 of drawing no. SK.VL-180 or item 16 of drawing no. 53.07.01) on
the equaliser beams as per sketch given in Annexure I.
IV. Fit hydraulic damper to drawing no. SK.VL-295 (item 1).
