HEAT TRANSFER LAB
EXPERIMENT: CRITICAL HEAT FLUX IN POOL BOILING OF WATER
PREPARED BY: A. MAHESHWER REDDY
LAB ASSISTANT
temperature higher than the saturation temperature of the liquid of heat is added to a
liquid from a submerged solid surface, The boiling process is referred to as pool boiling.
In this process the vapour produced may form bubbles, which glows and subsequently
detach them from the surface, rising to the free surface due to buoyancy effects.
SPECIFICATIONS:
1. Lengths of the nichrome wire = 40mm.
2. Diameter of the nichrome wire = 0.25 mm (33 guys).
PRCEDURE:
1. Distilled water is to be taken in the container.
2. The heaters are to be completely submerged.
3. The heater coil and best heater wire are connected across the sheds and electrical
connectives are made.
4. Heater coil is switched on and left on till the required bulk temperature of water is the
container is obtained.
5. The heater coil is switched off after the required bulk means temperature is attained and
switch on the test heater.
6. The boiling phenomena on wire is observed, by varying the voltage across it using the
dimmer start.
7. As the voltage is increased further and a point is reached when wire breaks and at this
point the voltage and current are to be noted.
CALCULATIONS:
Theoretical critical heat flux(qT)
v p[g(1-v)]1/4
Where hfg = latent heat of vaporization
v = density of vapour.
1 = density of liquid.
= surface intention of water.
Experimental value of critical heat flux.
Volts
Amps
RESULT:
The critical heat flux is determined experimentally and theoretically the values are compared.
The difference between experimental and theoretical values can be attributed to the following
reasons.
1. Due to lack of proper experimentation.
2. Due to formation of bubbles in the water.
3. Due to each of perfect acceleration if the process.
