Dear Umpqua Bank Grant Selection Committee,
Families Together is a non-profit organization that offers programs, events and support
for disabled children and their families in Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington.
Since its start in 1986, the organization has reached over 3,000 families through Family
Enrichment Weekends, parent support meetings, and online webinars on behavior
management for parents and teachers. Families Together has created a community
through year-round recreational and educational activities.
We are requesting $10,000 for this grant in order to offer parenting classes in various
Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington locations. These classes will educate parents
on how to better navigate challenges that come with raising a child with disabilities, and
how to enhance connections between parent and child through communication and
management strategies. The implementation of these classes will allow children with
disabilities to improve their emotional development and will assist parents in positively
engaging with their children to better their lives and family dynamics. Umpqua Banks
dedication to promoting the well-being of children and to inspiring children to reach
their full potential goes hand-in-hand with the goals of the Families Together parenting
classes.
The funds from this grant will be used to cover instructor costs, facility costs, supplies,
childcare, and travel costs. Most families that have members with disabilities tend to
carry the burden of extra expenses, and to alleviate that financial stress, Families
Together aims to provide all events and opportunities at little to no cost. Receiving this
grant would enable Families Together to offer these classes at no cost to the
participants, and as a result create stronger connections between parents, their children,
and the community as a whole.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Denise Wetzel, Families Together Development Director

Project Description: Families Together requests $10,000 in order to

offer emotional development courses that will allow for parents to learn
how to handle the challenges that can arise from having a child with
disabilities. The courses will help parents develop resources and
methods for improving the parent/child relationship through
communication and various management strategies. They will involve
hands-on lessons that directly address the various forms methods for
parents to help support the emotional development of their children.
One course will consist of three classes and three workshops, each
emphasizing different aspects of emotional support. The first course
will emphasize emotional development. The second will address
attachment and relationships. The third course will focus on advocacy
and community. Karen Nelson developed the curriculum and structure
for these courses and will teach a portion of the lessons. Families
Together will also appoint a contracted teacher to assist with the
lessons, which part of the requested funds will be used for. The funds
will also be used for writing supplies, test software, and presentation
equipment. The classes will also require a rental fee for the various
locations where the courses will be held, which funds will be used for
as well. The instructors for the classes will also need compensation for
their travel, which the remaining funds will be used for. Families
Together plans to host four different courses in four different cities.
Number of Program Participants: The project is projected to serve 32
families throughout the four separate locationseight families in each
region of Moscow, ID, Pullman, WA, Clarkston, WA, and Lewiston, WA.

Project Start Date: 09/01/2016
Evaluation and Measurement: Parents will be given surveys at the end
of the classes to fill out. This will allow them to give feedback about
how they felt about the classes, breaking down where the classes were
successful and how they could improve. Parents will be asked if they
feel like they have learned new strategies and ideas that will help them
promote the emotional development of their children. They will also be

asked if they are likely to refer other families who have children with
disabilities to Families Together emotional development courses. The
members of Families Together will take the feedback directly into
consideration for future classes, especially since this will be a new
project that Families Together is taking on.
