Core Financial Planning has merged with PFG

Financial Services. Our firm continues to
deliver strategic financial planning advice and
with an extended team, we can assist you in
achieving your financial goals.

THANK YOU TO TALKING HEADS FOR OUR

VALUABLE 2 PAGES IN APRIL TO ALL THE
PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE CONTACT WITH
US AND WELCOME TO OUR NEW
MEMBERS. WE ARE RAISING MONEY TO
ENABLE US TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL
PLANNING ADVICE. WE WELCOME ANY
CONTRIBUTION.
We plan to use this money to seek professional
planning advice on options for challenging the
extent of the Residential Growth Zone and
General Residential Zone in Barwon Heads and
to influence a change that better reflects our
coastal location and identity.
A sustainable Barwon Heads is vital to us all and
we need to inform ourselves of ways to
understand and protect our coastal community
and its beautiful environment. One of these
ways is for the Barwon Heads community to
work more closely and to support each other.
We need to ensure that we are listened to by the
decision makers, and that our views are valued.
We need to be safe and look after our
neighbours. We are located in a very precious
part of Victoria, we need to protect it for our
children and not just abandon it to one size fits
all planning codes which seem more focused on
providing opportunities for developers than
protecting the uniqueness of our coastal village.
Barwon Heads has always been known as the
Village by the Sea. We are as our name
suggests, situated at the mouth of the Barwon
River, a very flat coastal village established on
and behind sand dunes. We are land locked,
flat and low lying, surrounded by wetland
ecosystems, there are coastal inundation
concerns. We have a single, mixed-use 'main'
street. We have a varied population and have
become a desired place for people of all ages to
live. We cater for local tourism, however there is
an increasing stress on the natural and built
environments from increasing visitor numbers
and growth of the local population. Our built form
largely comprises detached dwellings with the
occasional small-scale mixed-use unit
developments and dual occupancy

to develop an urban design strategy.

(THAT WILL IDENTIFY ALL OF THE
PREVIOUS STUDIES AND ENSURE THAT
COMMUNITY INPUT IS VALUED AND
INCLUDED IN FUTURE PLANNING).
There has been community consultation in the
past with the resulting reports, strategies and
plans clearly articulating what the community
desires for our village and how this can be
achieved. The reasons for affective action on
these plans are many and are yet to be resolved,
however the sacking of the Councilors does
indicate where one problem was located.
City of Greater Geelong, Oh well they are
gone
Barwon Heads residents need to think long
and hard about what we want from our local
council. Our rates are high and we cant be
expected to subsidise the continued
inefficiencies and poor planning of CoGG.
We have been concerned for many years by
the poor standard of governance at CoGG.
The idiosyncrasies of individuals is part of
the fun of local government, but where is the
professionalism and accountability?
Community views have not been acknowledged
and our involvement has not been valued. So
much of our money has been wasted.
We strongly believe that CoGG will be a better
place with our residents actively involved, and
hope that the changes now underway will be the
perfect opportunity for participation and
discussion. We look forward to working with the
Commissioners.
Planning Application for 9 Bridge Rd - We
understand that there have been over 100
objections. No decision has been made at
the time of writing.
This planning application has prompted
continued discussion and is an example of the
appalling vision that developers have for our
town. It highlights the risks of the new
Residential Growth Zone. The application is
for a building that is probably bigger than
anything in the commercial zone and will

apply a (planning) overlay to protect existing

vegetation. To our knowledge this work has
never been started!
Pedestrian Safety project Vic Roads have
advised that this project is delayed until
June/July, whilst detailed designs are
completed. The latest update from Vic
Roads:
The design is still to incorporate the 4 zebra
crossings (Hitchcock Ave, Bridge Rd, Flinders
Pde and Ewing Blyth Drive), as well as removal
of kerb outstands, addition of bike lanes and
upgrading of the south side footpath on Bridge
Rd.
We are hoping to start works mid this year
(sometime in May/June/July) so that the project
can be in place and we can monitor it for a
couple of months before your busy summer
period. We are working hard with our
construction team in the office to make sure we
have got all the details worked out before we are
out on your roads as to cause as minimal
disruption as we can during this time.
Hopefully closer to the due date of
implementation, we can discuss once more
what will be happening during the time of
construction and hopefully what will happen in
the future summer and busy periods.
Community Safety a sustainable Barwon
Heads needs to be safe. Local resident Andy
Barlow has put a significant amount of his time
and energy setting up a new Neighbourhood
Watch Group for Barwon Heads. We strongly
support this and encourage all to join and
participate. We feel for our local businesses that
have been broken into recently and understand
they are working together to combat this
problem. Our traders are going to canvass all
businesses with a proposal to hire a security
patrol which will only go ahead with significant
majority support. Remember lock your cars, put
the keys in a safe place, lock your house, look
after your neighbours. Andy will provide an
update at our May meeting.
Community Arts We continue to support the

talking heads page 5

Training, not only to keep ourselves fit, and our

heart rate, balance, lung capacity, and bone
density what it should be, but so that we are fit
enough to keep up with the demands of our
voluntary work at the Op Shop. Without pulling on
the 25 kg weights of the rowing machine at class, I
doubt if I could lift some of the heavy bags and
boxes that are left to be put away each day.

Special Occasions.

We are very fortunate that many lovely garments

which have been bought for special occasions
such as weddings, or a ball, are often donated to
us. So its great when younger people in the town
decide that theyll make their next party an Op
Shop Formal. The giggles as people try on their
finery, and the later reports of what a hoot it has
been, are almost more satisfying to us than the
boost it gives our takings. We all love parties, and
three of our volunteers have formed a little Social
Committee for us. Our next gathering is definitely
special, since the volunteer who will turn 90 the
same day as Queen Elizabeth 11, (Brenda says
the stork dropped her down the wrong chimney), is
such an inspiration. Like many of the older folk of
Barwon Heads, Brendas life is full of activities,
including a weekly exercise class. Several of our
Op Shop volunteers do this Weight Resistance

That brings me to the second part of this small

monthly message, since I believe that now we are
only allowed to lift items weighing 10 kg or less!!
Recently, following now mandatory Occupational
Health and Safety Regulations, we have had
rather dire warnings about things we routinely do
which we ought not to! For many of us who left our
paid employment when things were very different,
some of these present requirements seem OTT...
over the top. Of course, it all boils down to caring
for our welfare, but also because somebody
could be sued if an incident occurs that
should/could have been avoided. This is how it
came about that by Anglican Diocesan rules, we
cannot accept donations of cots, strollers, carseats, bike helmets, electrical goods etc. because
of inherent dangers in such things. Twice a year we
volunteers have the opportunity of attending an Op

Shop Network Meeting, at which many of these

matters are discussed. I was most interested to
read in the Agenda for the next meeting, that as
well as the many new regulations about Health and
Safety that will be discussed, it is also suggested
that we re-visit the subject of electrical goods.
Other Op Shops have these goods checked and
tagged so they can sell them.
Despite all our signs and messages, we currently
get rid of so many donated electrical things, it is
NOT FUNNY.
Well see if anything changes.
Meanwhile, do keep donating those excellent ball
gowns, deb dresses, and mother-of-the bride gear.
But PLEASE dont leave electrical goods, or
anything in the
condition of the
shoes in the
accompanying
picture.
Keep well, and
hope to see you
soon,
Helen Edwards
Shop
Supervisor.

The Battle for the Moonah

The Moonah trees of Barwon Heads are the
signature vegetation that provide so much of our
coastal village atmosphere.
There are significant stands of Coastal Moonah
Woodland [CMW] in Barwon Heads at Moonah
Park and in the Warrenbeen Court cluster of large
private lots generally each being around 1 acre or
more in area. These are favourite places for a
morning or evening stroll with the dog.
The government have produced an excellent
brochure on CMW available for viewing online at:
http://www.depi.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/
0016/204154/CoastalMoonahFieldGuide.pdf
The brochure tells us that before European
settlement CMW may have dominated coastal
and near-coastal environments, on the Bellarine
Peninsula, reaching approximately 5 km inland in
some areas. Most likely it occurred as a large
continuous band, beginning at Swan Island and
extending to Barwon Heads.
It's not surprising that, with only a few significant
stands now remaining, CMW is listed as
threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee
Act 1988. It is the responsibility of councils to put
protection measures in place.
When the Warrenbeen Court precinct was being
developed in 1999 an Indigenous Vegetation
Survey was undertaken by local ecologist Mark
Tregove and, based on this, the CoGG and the
then Department of Environment and Planning
[DEP]worked together to have covenants put on
title for every lot, limiting the building envelopes
for the purposes of minimizing clearing and
protecting what the DEP described as a unique
natural vegetation community.
Fast forward to the present time and the owner of
16-17 Warrenbeen Court, Vicki Wright, has
removed a large area of Coastal Moonah
Woodland on her property to make way for a
million dollar plus expansion to her holiday
mansion, without any notice to her neighbours
and despite the prohibiting covenant. No Planning
Permit has been applied for or issued. At the time
of writing building works are still in progress and a
huge extension effectively doubling the footprint
has risen where significant Moonah trees once
stood. Allowing this precedent could soon lead to

destruction across the whole precinct as another

covenant, prohibiting sub-division, expires in
2020.

BELLARINE & GREAT OCEAN ROAD

CoGG have done nothing to stop this. In the

2010 Barwon Heads Structure Plan it was
recommended that a vegetation overlay be put in
place, but no work has been done on this. A past
policy of requiring permits to remove indigenous
vegetation has been abandoned.

As a last resort to the rescue of our environment,

being a lot owner in Warrenbeen Cour,t I am
taking Vicki to the Supreme Court for breach of
covenant, seeking removal of the buildings and
reinstatement of all native vegetation. For
anyone wishing to follow the detail, the case
listing is: S CI 2016 00839 - Warwick Alexander
Manderson- and Vicki Louise Wright.
It's certainly time that someone took a stand to
stop the damage caused by insensitive
development.
Keep an eye open for the fireworks on this one!

Ten years in the making, the film is an extraordinary eyewitness

The film spans 20 transformative years in the life of Tom "Putuparri"
Lawford as he navigates the deep chasm between his Western
upbringing and his determination to keep his traditional culture alive.
A story of life, time and culture. Nicole Ma's documentary is political

And for our little part of the world, this can only
mean one thing:

Yep, Kardinia Park. Thats about how much I

know about the game because I havent been
to an actual game since it was VFL in the
seventies. I dont know my drop punts from my
torpedos. Or my full forwards from my centre
half backs. To me, the language makes no
sense and as far as I can see, the game is
kinda rough. Over my 20 years as a
physiotherapist, many a busted cruciate and
torn hamstring has made me pray that my
youngest lad would fall for the game where
the ball was round and the rule was no
contact. But from the first time my wingman
held a Sherrin in his little hands, it was love at
first touch. Soon he was wearing a shiny
jersey complete with blue and white vertical
stripes and his main goal in life was to pose on
a $3.95 football card.
Last week, It was with great excitement that
we as a parent cheer-squad clapped and
whistled our local smalls onto the grass at
Kardinia Park. The enormity of the field

Dude - these guys are the ones on the telly.

These guys all play for your mighty cats. Why
dont you want them to sign their names on
your jumper?
My little wingman looked at me straight like he
has for the whole of his life and simply said,
My jumper is so clean and just out of the
wash. I dont want anyone to draw on it.
Think standing strength, open twists and nadi
shodhana.

The Mighty Cats.

Pretty soon the small auskickers began to
realise just who it was passing footballs back
to them. With a flurry of excitement there was
much passing of permanent markers as
excited signatures were scribbled on puffed
up backs.

Auskick.
This year, the small folk of our town started
their footy season with a bang. Rather then
heading down to our local oval - the one with
the million dollar view and the very cheap beer
- we all made a Sunday trip to the big smoke.
That being Geelong. Where we had our first
Auskick session at Kardinia Park.

talking heads page 9

Shes really into football and could get a cat

scrawl penned across her breasts. But she
barracks for Saint Kilda, so I knew it was up to
me. I stepped out onto the perfect green grass
as the sun shone down on Kardinia Park.
Ready to explain to my son the way a die-hard
fan is supposed to act.

reminding me not only of just how small my

little wingman still is, but the big world that he
is beginning to open himself up to. Pretty
soon, some very tall blokes with very big arms
started playing alongside the kids. They was
much pointing from the parent cheer-squad
with a boundary commentary which made me
realise these big blokes were actually the
Geelong football team. Otherwise known to
my wingman as his heroes -

So, the 2016 AFL season has

truly begun.

0416 119240

All the while, my youngest lad continued

kicking the ball to himself.
Some random - I think his name was Jimmy
Bartell - asked my wingman, Would you like
me to sign your jumper little man?
No thanks.
Then another, a rookie new to the team but
apparently not the game, came up and looked
down to my wingman. With arms the size of
my legs and wearing the same cattery blue,
Patrick Dangerfield then asked my wingman,
Would you like me to sign your jumper then?
And again, my youngest lad shrugged while
saying,
No thanks.
Some of the surrounding auskickers started to
urge my lad to offer his jersey. Or his socks.
Or his leg. No thanks he kept saying as he
continued to kick the ball to himself. While he
started to back away a little from the crowd.
The parent cheer-squad told me to get out and
onto the field. To explain to my wingman
exactly who was trying to sign his brand new
blue and white jersey and why. I suggested to
my mum that maybe she could go out instead.

Sometimes it can be hard to do your own

thing. To stand out against the crowd and go it
on your own. Playing your own game plan and
moving to your own rhythm can be judged as
doing it all wrong. With everyone urging you to
do their thing and to move in their direction, we
can feel a little lost and confused as to whats
right for us to follow and whats right for us to
leave behind. Why dont you barrack for my
team? Why dont you idolise my hero? Why
dont you want to do what Im doing? It takes a
real inner strength to hold your space at your
centre. To follow your own truths and desires.
Especially when youre standing in the centre
of Kardinia Park. In a pair of op-shop footy
boots and an oversized, vertical-striped clean
jersey.

High quality dental care, service and results.

We are transparent about our treatment processes and
the affiliated expenses, and will never proceed to treatment
unless you are fully informed of all aspects.

Invisalign is virtually invisible braces.

I watched my little wingman, with his wild,

unbrushed red hair and his straight,
determined face - and I asked him. What to
come and kick some big shots with me? And
we ran across to the goals, were we had been
told we weren't meant to go. While all the
other auskickers covered themselves with
permanent markers, we made permanent
memories. We played football to my
wingmans game commentary. Alongside with
his best friend and my Dad.
Where it was our signatures that everyone
wanted.

Is it worth it?

Because we were the stars of the game.

I truly believe everyone deserves to be confident with

his or her smile. Good teeth and a glowing smile are
one of the first things you notice when you meet a new
person.
Having straight teeth makes for healthier gums and
less chance of decay because it is easier to clean all
the surfaces of your teeth. When teeth are overlapping,
you can get areas plaque can gather and stagnate.

COMMUNITY ARTS GARDEN

Workshop to be held in May: Everyone welcome!
HEALTHY SOIL = HEALTHY PL ANTS
WORKSHOP - SATURDAY MAY 14TH 1.15 (For a 1.30
Start) 3 PM @ the gardens
Though some gardeners may be blessed with perfect
soil, most of us are gardening in soil that is less than
perfect. Turning a poor soil into a plant-friendly soil is not
difficult to do, once you understand the components of a
healthy soil. Come to this workshop and learn how to
garden in Healthy Soil.
Lorna Martin, who has studies in Horticulture and
Permaculture and a
Diploma of Sustainability and experience in community
gardens, will be presenting this workshop for us.
You will learn the benefits of: *Compost
*Worms
*Microbes
There will be plenty of time for Q & A. followed by a
cuppa. Fee $10 payable on the day.
Register your interest in attending by sending an email
to workshop@bhartsgarden.com (We will send you a
return email confirming you have secured a place in the
workshop)
Any queries please phone Carmel 0413 045 443.

Basket Making Workshop:

A successful and fun basket making workshop was held
recently at the gardens. It was run over two Sundays, a
few weeks apart, and all those who participated
thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The photo shows a
basket made by Deb. Maybe she will use it at the
gardens when harvesting her veges? Deb commented
that a basket can be made from all materials sourced
from our community garden.
The Garden Room. (the portable located at
the rear of the gardens). Our garden room is available

for hire for a nominal fee. Currently we have various

groups using the room including a yoga group and also
a chlldren's music group. It is a very pleasant room to
use for meetings. The room is carpeted and tea making
facilities are available. If you would like to book the
portable please contact Committee member Russell
Mitten on 0439 061 475.
Working bees/get togethers are held on the
last Sunday of the month from 10 am onwards.
Everyone is welcome to call in, meet members and if
you can spare an hour or so lend a hand with some of
the smaller projects.

We welcome visitors to the garden please feel free to

pop in, see what we have been up to and take time to sit,
relax and enjoy your Community Arts Garden.

THINGS HAVE BEEN ALL A BUZZ AT THE

COMMUNITY GARDEN OVER THE PAST FEW
WEEKS.
A new storage shed is currently being constructed
(more about this from Rob in the next edition of TH),
John Mc organized a very successful Passata making
morning with about 25 people attending, the kids' play
area has been relocated to behind the poly house and
the Queen Bee in the garden's beehives became too
feisty and has had to be replaced.
As well as all of the above . Plotties have been busy
preparing their plots and planting a wide range of winter
vegetables. Peas, beetroot, cauliflowers, cabbage,
leeks, onions and broad beans are some of the popular
varieties planted. The Committee ordered in a large
quantity of a soil/compost mix for plotties to purchase for
topping up their plots. We still make our own compost at
the gardens but with this dry weather (and lack of water)
it has been somewhat slow rotting down to the state
where it can be used. Chris and Russell H recently spent
many hours cutting up a large amount of green waste,
turning the compost and generally tidying up the bays
that are set aside for the purpose.
Welcome to new plotholders: Sara and Aaron, Britt
and Peter and also Paul and Chantel recently joined our
garden community and are enthusiastically planting up
their plots. We are currently converting one communal
space into additional personal plots so we can
accommodate those on the waiting list. Currently we
have 23 plotholders which is terrific along with a large
number of Friends of the Garden people who don't
want to necessarily have their own patch of soil but join
in at working bees, social functions, workshops and
support the gardens in many other ways. (You can
become a Friend for just $15 per year).

COMMUNITY ACTIONS
FOR A

Outcomes of the Community Planning Process

SUSTAINABLE

The first presentation of the Barwon Heads Sustainability Group's recently produced Community
Actions for a Sustainable Barwon Heads (see http://www.bhsustainability.org.au/ ) was made at
the Barwon Heads Association meeting on 18 April.
Resulting from a consultation process in 2015 with many community groups, the document
captures a range of local projects and activities that are ongoing or in their next phase, from
BHSG's own 'Pot Luck Dinners', Plastic Bag Free Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove (stage 2 Borrow a Bag) and Community Solar (stage 2 crowdfunding solar at the school) to other new and
proposed projects including:
Seeking Refuge Bellarine for Refugees support for asylum seekers in the Geelong region gaining
temporary protection visas
The Barwon Estuary Project highlighting the natural and cultural values of the Estuary through production of a Journal
A possible forum series, including Renewable Energy and deeper examination of the natural impacts of Climate Change
A suggested Urban Design Strategy Project to embrace the many identified concerns, regarding urban design, safety and transport issues
BARWON HEADS

The Urban Design Strategy Project generated much discussion at the Association meeting, and it was noted that a working group will be formed in
June to examine this further. The Working Group will consider approaches to:

BHAC is pleased to report that

350 surveys were completed
in relation to the Feasibility
Study for a Community arts
hub so there seems to be a
healthy interest in having a space for arts
development in Barwon Heads.
Now that the consultation phase is complete a report will be
lodged in mid May to set out the demand for this facility, so
wish us luck as if sufficient demand is confirmed, Stage 2
will identify the site and operational viability and we'll be on
our way.

Mountain to Mouth is coming up and Kaz

McGlynn and other local artists and volunteers
have busy been creating beach lanterns to
illuminate the beach for the event.
These should look spectacular so make sure you are on the
beach that night to welcome the weary walkers on their
return. Mountain to Mouth finishes at 6pm on Saturday 7th
May at Barwon Heads foreshore with a closing ceremony.

This event Attitude of Gratitude cancer

fundraiser is a way of giving back. Three
of our committee members have
experienced cancer and all of our
members have been touched by cancer
in some way. We want to celebrate our
family/friends' survival and to give back
to the work of cancer researchers who
contributed to our recovery. We also
want to celebrate our dedicated
surgeons (some of them local), doctors,
nurses, oncologists and medical teams
too. But importantly, we want to
acknowledge the amazing support we
received from friends and community
who made our cancer journeys so much
easier to bear. We want to celebrate this
with local visual artists and local
musicians who are donating their time
for this event - and this is your chance to
check out the amazing talent contained
in our local community. Love where we
live!

Steve Craddock's thoughts on books & writing from down here on the river bank

Aldous Huxley, who died in 1963, has been long forgotten,

remembered (if at all) for a single novel, Brave New World.
For a time, during the forties and fifties, that book shared
equal top billing with Orwells 1984, and both books were
extremely powerful influences on the thinking of progressive
young people. Today, I suspect Orwells fans greatly
outnumber Huxleys.

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

How fire fighting has changed

This year Barwon Heads Fire Brigade turns the rather grand age of 80.

So why would anyone read Huxleys little-known work, After Many a Summer?

In looking back at our history, there are some interesting comparisons with the way fire fighting was conducted then, compared to now. Over the next editions of Talking
Heads we'll be comparing how we operate as a Brigade today with 1936.

Well let me tell you, that with all its faults, this novel poses very relevant questions
about greed and power, death and dying. And its very funny, too! The lively
descriptions of extreme behaviours and extreme events will stay with you because of
the authors sardonic sense of irony and his ability, like Ricky Gervais, to make us
laugh out loud at times when we should be turning away, struck by the horror.

The Brigade began on 1 July 1936 following a public meeting held in the community hall, led by Mr Kinder Archer. There were 15 firemen and the first captain was Mr Frank
Ellis. The original site was on the corner of Clifford Parade and Hitchcock Avenue. In late 1937 a block of land was purchased and a new Fire Station built, right where the
Beach House Bar and Restaurant is today.
In the early days it was a Volunteer Community Bucket Brigade with a reel, cart and buckets. Fires were extinguished by those who arrived at the fires. Water was
unavailable, so the fire brigade relied on house tank water until the late 1930s when pipes were built across the Bridge. The first motorised unit was a Dodge truck, especially

It has been suggested that this book may have inspired Orson Welles great movie
Citizen Kane. Here, our Californian billionaire, Jo Stoyte, despite surrounding himself
with all the splendid trappings of wealth in the mock castle on the hill, is terrified of
dying, and his attempts to live on indefinitely drive the book. Assisting him in that
endeavour is his personal physician, the truly, madly awful Dr Sigmund Obispo.

fitted with hose.

It's a very different scenario today. With some 35 members, male and female, we are an active and growing Brigade. The Brigade relocated to Sheepwash Road in the early
1990's. With water connected throughout Barwon Heads, we are able to connect to fire hydrants and have instant water available when responding to incidents in town.
Our fire trucks are very different to the original cart and far more sophisticated in operation. Some of the equipment found on our appliances include hoses, rake hoes, fire
extinguishers, hydrants, generators, large fans and fire blankets. In some ways, the equipment is not all that different to that found on the original fire trucks, however the
appliances themselves are far more elaborate in the pumping systems that are installed. More to come in future editions
As the days get shorter and evenings cooler, CFA is urging residents to keep themselves fire safe by checking and maintaining their fireplaces, chimneys, fireboxes and flues.
Each year CFA sees an increase in the number of chimney fires from both fireplaces and solid wood heaters. For more information http://news.cfa.vic.gov.au/news/coolerconditions-prompt-chimney-warning.html
We have a Facebook page informing you of local community safety events and insights to what the Brigade is up to. Make sure you jump on and give us a like to follow what
we are up to!
The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is seeking new members. If you are interested in learning new skills, meeting new people and being part of a team that contributes to the
safety of our community, please call Captain Helen Wood on 0438 507 273, or email Secretary Kira Crawford Brooks on cap.bhufb@bigpond.com

At the time, Huxley, a very serious English intellectual, was settling very comfortably
indeed into expatriate life in California. Although he struggled as a film writer, he made
many friends, adopted Californian mysticism, and became a fervent advocate for psychedelic drugs. Unfortunately for we
modern readers, these foibles may have caused Huxley to lose track of his plot repeatedly.
Again and again, he makes one of his characters, Jos neighbour and old school friend, Bill Propter, spout long monologues
of philosophical mumbo jumbo. No doubt better readers than me will say this advice is utter heresy, but may I suggest you
can safely skip most of his scenes, and you will enjoy the book far more for doing so!
Like Brave new world, this novel has a slightly fantastic strand. Here rather than on genetics, we focus on extending life
expectancy, a topic that is not as far-out today as it might have been in the forties. So to what extremity is fat boy Jo Stoyte
prepared to go at the hands of the odious Dr Obispo to achieve something like immortality? Youll have to read on to the
excruciating final scenes to find out.
Steve
And a few words from Pat

I didnt read After Many a Summer in my teens as Steve did, so I came to it free of
expectations, and on the whole, I found it a delightful read.
At the start of the book, with Jeremy Pordage, the main protagonist, we take a trip through the crazy landscape of Los
Angeles where you can buy mile high cones or attend a church service and feel better all week. Here, billboards assault the
senses, proclaiming that Jesus is coming soon and that you too can have abiding youth with Thrill-phorm brassieres.
And there, we see a bill-board for Beverley Pantheon, The Cemetery That Is Different. So, from the outset, we know are to
be taken on a wild ride.
With the exception of the annoying Mr Propter who will go on and on, the characters are great fun. We have the hapless
millionaire, Joe Stoyte, who is in thrall to the demonic Dr. Obispo; and the vacuous miss Maunciple who is a slave to her own
carnal desires for the said Doctor.
Soon, we become deeply involved in Joes quest. He is desperate for the elixir of eternal youth. And when Jeremy Pordage
unlocks the secrets of the fifth Earl of Gonesters diaries, found amongst the Hauberk Papers which Pordage has been
engaged to edit, we see the quest played out in all its gruesome extremity. A case of be careful what you wish for.

WHAT'S COOKING AT
THE LOBSTER POT?
Behind the Green Door
With the grey light and chilly
May air rudely nipping at our
unsuitable knees, the height of
summer could not be further
away. Yet the next is coming
closer in the minds of the
Friends of the Lobster Pot.
The approaching winter
solstice finds our doors closed
to the public. No, seasonal
hibernation is not underway.,
Reflecting on the lessons of the
past super busy summer,
planning for the next and
making those plans happen in a
flurry of weekend working bees
is the order of the day. That
and learning more
and
marveling at the beauty our
seaside surroundings. If you
are interested in the natural
and cultural heritage of the
Barwon River Estuary and have
spare time on your hands, why
not join the Friends of the
Lobster Pot? I'm talking about
the Barwon Estuary Heritage
Centre of course. It's the green
building on the river near 'At the
Heads' restaurant. Working
bees will take place on the first
Saturday of the month from
now until the next summer
solstice.

organisation through Barwon

Collendina Hooded Plover Fledglings:
The chicks had been flying up to 20-30
metres at a time but I was reluctant to
consider them 'fledged', especially when I
observed them being brooded at day 34!!
No one had observed the chicks flying out
over the water, so on official 'Fledge Day' I
was still reluctant to make the call...that
was until 6pm 30th of March.
It is unfortunate that both hoodie and magpie families
have claimed this stretch of beach as 'their' territory, as
the magpies were an ever-present threat and most
volunteers experienced magpie-induced 'near' heart
attacks as the magpies and hoodies played 'Cat and
Mouse' along the length of the beach.
(A chick was eaten by a magpie on day 5...right before a
volunteer, who was helpless to do anything as it
happened so quickly!)
On several occasions, the hen would protect / brood her
chicks, one under each wing, whilst dad, AD, would fend
off the magpies.
On Fledge Day, the magpies had pushed the hoodie
family all the way from 6W to 7W over the course of an
hour and a half, it was very high tide and the hoodie family
were near the 7W boundary fence of their territory with
the magpies on the upper beach making life hard for
them. A walker, completely oblivious to the situation she
was about to walk into, proceeded to walk at the hoodies
and split the family up, AD flew at the magpies which then
flew off into the dunes, AD returned to his family and all
four flew off in unison in a wide arc out over the waves and
back to the safety of 6W.
I asked the walker if she'd seen the chicks fly...she replied
"Yeah, I saw the birds." and kept walking...unaffected by
the miracle that had just taken place!
The fledging of AD & unb's twins brought our total to 5
fledglings for Bellarine for the season, one up on our
previous 'record'.
Over the course of 35 days, there were 32 volunteers
involved in their rearing.

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

Bridge2Bridge

back home. When he and Jason joined us

on day 6 in Moe it gave the team a real lift.
Its great that he is now back on the early
morning rides. Thanks Wiggo.

The B2B is finally complete;

over 1,100kms of riding in 8 Alicia Brown
days. What an epic journey.
The B (bus) team left early on
Friday morning of April Fools
Day.
It was a big trip to Sydney 13 hours on a
bus towing the trailer laden with bikes.
The A (aeroplane) team took an hour to
get to the starting point. The cycling trip
was a wonderful journey full of
challenges and fun.

We managed to beat our

fundraising target of $20,000,
raising over $23,000 for local
Geelong charity Give Where You
Live. Here are some thoughts from one
of our riders about the B2B.......
It was very cool being able to eat with
impunity, being so active all day meant
big meals and all types of food were on
the menu (I hadn't had so many
chocolate milks since year 8!) I always
wanted to see the southern NSW coastal
towns but never thought it would be on a
bike. It was good to know Cann River
was actually tolerant of men in Lycra despite what everyone said. I may never
take the highway to Bairnsdale again as
it is so much more pleasant on the back
roads of Gippsland. The moment the
town greeted us at the end of the ride
was an absolutely unforgettable
moment.

A regular early morning rider, Alicia took on

the role of marketing and social media
coordination for the B2B ride. She did an
amazing job for the team, sponsor support
and raising the Give Where You Live
profile. Her hard and dedicated work was
just awesome, particularly coordinating
the arrival back across the Barwon Heads
Bridge. Cheers Alicia.

Peter O'Malley

And, finally from our inspirational leader

Mikey..... B2B has meant Sydney to
Barwon heads for the last year, but B2B
now means Back to Bed!

2016 VetRide
Earlier this year, local Peter Donovan
and his wife Gayle took part in a weeklong ride with 65 other Vietnam veterans
from Seymour to Canberra. They
travelled an average distance of 100
kilometres per day. The BHCC would like
to congratulate Gayle and Peter on their
efforts and hope that one day they will
join us on a ride one weekday morning or
on the weekend.
Thats it for May. Next month youll hear a
few words from Nev about his thoughts
on the B2B. Thanks for all your support.

BARWON HEADS FOOTBALL/NETBALL CLUB

After a short end of season break,
the Boys and Girls were back into
the swing of training, in preparation
to improve on last years fantastic
efforts.

Barwon Heads
netballers are on a
mission to make
2016 the Year of the
Seagull.

The preseason matches against South Barwon and

Thompson were both hosted at home and gave the
players a solid hit out to prepare for the upcoming
season.
The first official match of the season took us to Torquay
for a night game on Easter Saturday against one of last
seasons yard sticks and a club who has had the
advantage over us for many years. For those who
witnessed the game, saw an outstanding performance
from the entire team, ending in a 10 point win to the
Seagulls.
Newcomb was up next and they appeared a much
improved side from last year but struggled to show it on
the scoreboard with the Seagulls coming home with a 70
point win, with Andy Walsgott kicking 5 goals and
Brandon Backwell and Brandon Ryan kicking 3 each.
Round 3 was back at the Seagulls nest hosting
Drysdale. The Gulls got off to a great start holding a 7
goal lead going into half time, the young Drysdale outfit
gave our boys a run for their money in the second half
ending in a 6 point win to the Seagulls.
Round 4 was again at the Howard Harmer Oval, with
Portarlington travelling the highway for the game. Port
lead at every change and proved that they were there to
win. A few late goals to the Gulls in the final term gave us
the 4 points with a winning margin of 15 points.
This week we travel to Queenscliff, who are proving
every bit the team of old, looking at adding silverware to
their already swollen display case. It will take a real team
effort by the boys to get over the line this week, and if we
want to be finals contending this year we must be up to
the task.

With new senior coach Olivia

Wilson at the helm, the club has
hit the court with fresh
determination this season.

Our solid pre-season of fitness,

skills and game-play sessions including punishing stair climbs
at The Bluff - prepared us for this
moment.
Barwon Heads A grade in action against Drysdale. Photo: Marcel Berens Sports Photography.
After four rounds, seven teams
were sitting in the top four of their respective ladders.
A grade has had some near misses - such as the one-goal loss to Portarlington - but it can only give the group
confidence in its potential. Shooter Monique Adams, who won the league Hot Shot award last year, has been
promoted to the top team.
B grade is leading the way, thriving with a mix of experience and young enthusiasm.
C grade is finding its rhythm after starting the season with a draw. Coaches Narelle and Marnie are spoilt for choice
when it comes to talent.
Like recent years, D grade is in promising form and is so far undefeated. Coach Bec is taking every opportunity to trial
different combinations on the court. Kate and Darcy are guiding the 19 and Unders, which opened the season with
two wins and two losses. Meanwhile, the junior Seagulls are soaring. Both 17 and Under sides are putting together
powerful performances to perch high on the Section One and Section Two ladders. The 15 and Under outfits,
coached by Kylie and Tim respectively, had two wins each after Round 4. Sam's 13 and Under Section One was
unbeaten and Section Two, guided by Kristy, also had two triumphs on the board. Our future stars, three Under 11
teams, have commenced their campaigns showing wonderful skill and teamwork.
A big thank you to everyone who has volunteered to coach, co-ordinate, manage, umpire, file results, cook the
barbecue and help out in other ways this year.
Were particularly looking forward to hosting the first
Battle of the Bridge for the year against Ocean Grove
on April 30. Then the popular Reverse Raffle is on May
15.
We welcome all the local support we can get on the
sidelines, so come on down and cheer us on. Bring a
Design and Construct
hat and a raincoat as the weather can be
temperamental this time of year. Wed love to see you

Congratulations Don & Adair

Barwon Heads Cricket Club

In the 2015-16 season, the
BARWON HEADS CRICKET CLUB
was awarded the Ron Birch award
for the club that best exemplifies the
spirit of cricket on the field.
This is a significant award and we were warmly
congratulated on the night by last years winners
Anglesea, for whom our club have a lot of admiration for
the manner in which they have conducted their affairs in
the past couple of seasons. The winning and losing of
cricket matches is a very important way of gauging the
success of a club and from week to week winning
games is the focus of the players and the match
committee. However it is ultimately the concern of the
club that we and our supporters carry ourselves with as
much sportsmanship and approach our conduct during
matches as being as important as the result. We as a
club have done a lot of work on fostering an attitude
which holds spirit, along with pride and intent, as one of
the three core values and trademarks of our play and
our club.
We were very proud, given the week wed had prior to
the presentation of this award, to have been awarded
this honour and we thank the association for their

recognition of our hard work.

When we talk about spirit, what do we mean?
Essentially, were on about the way we carry ourselves on
the field as well as off. Were talking about the support for
one another that we show when things get a bit tough and
of the way we respond when we make a mistake or there
is a bit of a serious challenge to our position in a match.
It is also about how we conduct ourselves in the face of
victory or defeat.
It is having the proper respect for our opponents and
for the effort that they bring to each contest.
Its about all joining in to get a task done or to make an
undertaking a success.
When we all sat down as a club in the week before the
T20 grand final and took responsibility for all of the jobs
we needed to do on the day and individuals or groups
stepped forward to accept those jobs we, as a club,
showed a wonderful spirit. As a result the event was a
great success on and off the field.
Spirit gets you places.
It was pleasing to see Michael Molly Moulton go up to
accept the spirit of cricket award on the night. His
example in grinding a wonderful hundred and then in
standing up and supporting his team mates when we

were in the field in the B Grade semi-final, was one of

the best displays of spirit seen in recent times at the
club. I think that both those days are already written
large in the folklore of our club.
Well now we find ourselves without cricket as, for the
time being, it is relegated to the recesses of our
memories and we, that did never weep, now melt with
woe that winter should cut off our spring-time so. As
some old poet once wrote. Of course there are recruits
to find, captains to appoint, coaches to organize,
membership and sponsorship packages to create, to
accounts of the club to finalise, an AGM to organize, a
new president and committee to install, ground
allocation to apply for, balls and equipment to get ready
for next summer, merchandise to purchase, player
numbers to work out and the list goes on. Bring on the
summer so that the work load drops.
We all hope you have a great winter, that the footy
club do really well and the netballers win heaps of
games and you all come back from the cold months with
an enthusiasm and a spirit to make the real BHCC a
great place to be next summer.

SEAGULLS BASKETBALL CLUB

One of our new teams, Seagulls Rose U10 girls

The Winter season has commenced and grading games are concluding. We have
25 teams including a womens and mens team this season. It is pretty amazing for a small town to have
so many teams and we are now finding some children are coming over the bridge to play with Seagulls
which is great. Our philosophy has always been to introduce this great game to our children, be all
inclusive and to promote sportsmanship, teamwork and self pride. And I think the club does do a good job
of this.
Our president ran a coaching clinic for coaches and parents and this was really well received. A good tip if
you are looking for ideas for your children is to research youtube videos for basketball drills.
After a hectic March there is not much to report in this edition, however, there will be the annual
presentation in September to look forward to.

Following the spate of local

break-ins and robberies,
Barwon Heads local, Andy
Barlow has initiated
discussion with the
Barwon Heads Association
and local police regarding
a Neighbourhood Watch
program in the area as
below.
Formation of a Barwon Heads branch of
the Neighbourhood Watch (N.H.W.)
program is well underway. Local resident,
Andrew Barlow initiated the process
some weeks ago and is in talks with local
and regional senior police and also the
regional N.H.W. branch who Andrew says
have been very supportive. Ive had
really terrific initial indications of support
from local residents, business and other
community stakeholders. Its very
encouraging and Im hoping well have a
solid expression of interest for those
wanting to be involved. Its a great
opportunity to take some ownership in
making sure the town is safe and secure
for all residents, family, friends and kids.
Neighbourhood Watch Australasia is the
overarching organisation of member
Neighbourhood Watch programs in
Australia and Neighbourhood Support in
New Zealand. Neighbourhood Watch
Australasia is the largest community
based, crime prevention activity of its
kind, in Australasia.

Talking Heads is 14 years old

Steering our little local mag through all the
changes during the last 14 years had constant
challenges but were still here enjoying the
support of most of the businesses, clubs and
organisations in Barwon Heads
The aim has always been to put our community
first and to always aim to make editorial
decisions in the best interest of the people &
businesses of the town while giving everyone a
voice.
Just like the tidal flow, weve seen folk come
and weve seen them go but, as evidenced by
the crowd at this mornings Anzac Day Service,
the Barwon Heads community spirit lives on.
(Photo page 2).
Thank you to all who support independent,
locally owned and run businesses, of which we
are one.
Thank you to our advertisers who pay the way
for us all and to the people who sit at their desk
each month to connect with and inform you,
their community, of their thoughts,
observations and news. You are the ones who
make Talking Heads worth reading
Ed
It is more than a little ironic that smalltown papers have been thriving by
practicing what the mainstream media
are now preaching," writes the broadcast
journalist and USC professor Judy Muller
in her new book, Emus Loose in Egnar:
Big Stories from Small Towns (University
of Nebraska Press).
"Hyper-localism, Citizen Journalism,
Advocacy Journalism these are
some of the latest buzzwords of the
profession. But the concepts, without the
fancy names, have been around for ages
in small-town newspapers."
