Whatdoyouthink?Doeshelooklikeayogi?
Well,I'vealreadybloggedaboutitbefore,andwe
allknowthatlookscanbedeceiving.But

InHistoryandPhilosophy,wehavebeenreading
andstudyingtheYogaSutrasofPatanjali,which
outlinetheAshtanga,or"8limbed"pathoffinding
enlightenment.Thefirst5limbsareguidelinesthat
helpyoutodealwiththephysicalaspectsof
"being".Forexample,theyinstructonthe
importanceofbreathing,ofrelatingtotheworld,of
beingyourself,ofposture.Isn'titinterestingthat
Asana,oryogapostures,thethingwemost
associatewith"Yoga",isonlyonelimbonthis
path?I'vespent10weeksobservingtheYamas
andNiyamas,I'vebeendoingAsana(ohBOYhave
Ibeendoingasana!),I'vebeenbreathing,andI've
beenstudying.Nowit'stimetofocusonthelast3
limbs.

Thelast3limbsaresequential,hierarchical.Theymustbepracticedinorder:youbeginwith
concentration(Dharana).Onceyouconcentrate,youcanstarttomeditate(Dhyana).Onlyafter
you'veestablisheduninterruptedconcentration,canyouachievethedeepstateofpeace,knowledge,
andinterconnectednessthatisknownasSamadhi.WhatdoesthishavetodowithEinstein?
Inclassthisweek,ourteacherusedhimasanexampleofSamadhi,becausehebecame"one"with
hiscompleteandtotalknowledgeoftheatom.Asascienceteacher(butnotaphysicist),thiswasa
"WOW"momentforme.Iagreedhewassomeone,ifthereeverwasanyone,whowascompletely
absorbedintheknowledgeofparticlephysics.Iunderstoodexactlywhatshemeantthathehad
suchadeepstateofknowledgeaboutsomethingthathewasSamadhi...buthisareaofknowledgeis
abouttheuniverse,sothissuggeststhathewasonewiththeuniverse.That'sprettydarnmind
blowing.
This,ofcourse,beggedmyquestionaboutwhetherornothehimselfidentifiedwithandattributedhis
knowledgeandexperiencetoayogapractice.Iemailedmyteacher,andshesuccinctlysaid"No.",
butthethoughtofittickledme.SomebeingswhoachieveSamadhiaresoenlightenedthatthey
leavetheirhumanformspermanently.Othersdipinandout,andcontinuetointeractamongthoseof
uswhoare"lesser"formsofourselves.Wemightcallthem"Gurus".Seekingthemoutandtrying
tolearnfromthemiswherethedevotiontoagurucomesfrom,butultimately,it'ssomethingyou
needtoworkonbyyourself.Concentrate,meditate,andexperienceSamadhi.
WasEinstein"Oming"awayonhistuffet,concentratingonatoms,comingupwithE=mc2?Washe
thegurutobuddingastrophysicists?Whoknows.Let'sjustsaythatnotmuchsurprisesmethese
days.Toobadhe'snotaroundanymoretoask.Maybehe'slefthishumanform,andisoutthere
enjoyingSamadhi.
