Moist Feeds

Brewers Grains
Description
Brewers Grains are the solid residue left after the extraction
of malt in the production of beer. Principally, Brewers Grains
are used as a protein source that boosts the value of rations
based on maize silage, straw and other low protein
roughages.

Countrywide Alternative Feeds - 0845 673 2100

Feeding
As a rule of thumb, 4kg of Brewers Grains will replace 1kg of
traditional concentrates
Suitable for:
Dairy can be fed up to 12- 15kg / head / day
Beef Brewers Grains can support liveweight gains of up to 1kg / head / day
Sheep Valuable source of protein and energy for lamb finishing diets and for ewes
at tupping and pre and post lambing.

As a mineral source, Brewers Grains have a high phosphorus content, and the feed
can be a valuable source of this expensive mineral. Specially formulated mineral
supplements may be needed in order to maximise this benefit when large quantities
of Brewers Grains are fed.
Key Features
Value for money
Good feed source for protein and energy
Highly versatile and easy-to-feed
Storage and Availability
Brewers Grains can be fed fresh from the day of arrival, or ensiled for feeding some
months later in both cases the feed is attractive to stock. When taking
advantage of the seasonal prices for ensiling, grains should be properly clamped.
Brewers Grains can also be ensiled with sugar beet, known as Grainbeet,
this process allowing the juices and their accompanying nutrients to be retained.
It should be noted that with freshly delivered loads, water may drain off the grains
during the first 2-3 days after delivery. As a result, DM may increase to about 30%,
which should be used when formulating rations.

Moist Feeds

Vitagold
Description
Vitagold is produced in the production of spirit alcohol from
mainly wheat. The grain is mixed with malt and water in a
pressure cooker type operation to release sugars from the
cereal. Yeast is then added to ferment the sugars into
alcohol. This is then distilled out of the solids still in situ. The
solids are then pressed to extract excess moisture leaving a
friable moist feed as Vitagold.

Key Features
Succulent concentrate
High protein mainly from yeast
High energy level from cooked cereal
Very palatable and can enhance dry matter intakes
Ideal for inclusion in dairy feeds
Excellent supplement to cereals for beef cattle
Bulk density 700-800 kg per cubic meter
Storage
Whether fed fresh or ensiled, it is essential to exclude all air and water from the silo to
successfully store the product. Failure to ensile properly may result in mould growth,
loss of dry matter and a reduction in the nutritive value of the clamp.

Feeding
Vitagold can be fed to most farm livestock in a wide range of feeding situations.
Whether used as part of a TMR ration or as a sole concentrate feed, care should be
taken to ensure a good long fibre source is present and that adequate mineral and
vitamin supplementation is available.

Moist Feeds

Supergrains
Description
Supergrains is the moist co-product from the manufacture of
grain spirit at the Cameronbridge Distillery, comprising the
non starchy components of the wheat grains plus the yeast.
Feeding
Dairy 10 - 15kg / head / day
Beef 5 - 10kg / head / day
Sheep the high copper content makes Supergrains
generally unsuitable for feeding to sheep

Countrywide Alternative Feeds - 0845 673 2100

Key Features
Good feed source for protein and energy
Highly versatile and easy-to-feed

Storage
Supergrains can be fed fresh from the day of arrival, or ensiled for feeding some
months later in both cases the feed is attractive to stock. When taking
advantage of the seasonal prices for ensiling, Supergrains should be properly
clamped in anaerobic conditions by excluding the air and tightly sheeting.

Description
New early maturing varieties now allow maize to be used as
a concentrate feed source rather than as a forage crop as in
the past. Crimped maize grain complements all forms of
silage, whole crop cereals and conventional cereals by
providing a high energy source of by-pass starch.
Optimum rumen function is critical for high yielding dairy
cows and high levels of rapidly digested cereal starch from
wheat and barley reduces rumen pH, impairs rumen
microbial function, and increases the risk of acidosis. The
type of starch present in maize differs in structure to that of wheat and barley, and
crimping the maize grain results in a slower rate of starch digestion in the rumen. A
greater amount of undigested starch passes into the lower gut, where the increased
digestion improves the glucose supply to the tissue and improves the overall
efficiency of dietary energy to milk and meat.

Moist Feeds

Crimped Maize

Key Features
Suitable for all classes of ruminants
Crimped maize has highest bypass starch
Increases milk yield
Increases milk protein output
Improves fertility by reducing loss of body condition in early lactation
Storage and Availability
Crimped maize can be supplied as full loads through winter for clamping in large
quantities. It needs to be treated the same as any other moist feeds or silage,
and sheeted and vermin proofed. It can also be Ag Bagged for farms with limited or
no additional storage space.

Key Features
High in starch and by pass starch
After processing high in rumen buffering capacity due to the conversion of caustic
to carbonate and bicarbonate
Palatable when fed as part of TMR
Better on farm option to grinding or rolling

Storage
Typically mixed by adding caustic at 3% mixing for 5 minutes then topping up with
water to make the mixture 65-70% DM. Mix for 10 minutes and let it sit for 10 hours,
during which time it will heat. Level it out to cool, feed after 3-4 days. The sodium
hydroxide converts to sodium bicarbonate and impregnates the grains surface
but will darken the longer it is stored.

Moist Feeds

Pressed Sugar Beet Pulp

Description
Pressed Pulp is produced during the processing of sugar
beet. Once the sugar has been diffused out from the beet,
excess water is removed by passing the material through
heavy presses. The resulting moist feed is known as Pressed
Sugar Beet Pulp and can be fed fresh or ensiled for future
use.

Key Features
High Energy succulent which can improve energy density of ration
Valuable source of digestible fibre to improve rumen fermentation
Very palatable and can enhance dry matter intake
Particularly suitable for milk production as it helps maintain optimum rumen
conditions
Easily stored and incorporated into many feeding systems
Ensures good rates of liveweight gain in beef cattle
Storage and Availability
Ideally the material should be stored on a clean dry concrete base. The material
should be compressed with a tractor loader shovel, sheeted and weighted to
exclude air. Failure to ensile properly may result in mould growth, loss of dry matter
and a reduction in the nutritive value of the clamp.

Economol
Description
Cane molasses is a dark brown, viscous liquid produced as a
co-product of the production of sugar from the sugar cane
plant. After dissolving sugars out of the fibrous cane at high
temperature, the crystals of sugar settle out as the liquid
cools leaving the Cane molasses, sometimes called Black
Strap, behind. Economol is produced by mixing water with
Cane Molasses to help flowability in all conditions.

Golden Malt Syrup

Description
A cost-effective blend of co-products from the distillery and
fermentation industries. Due to cost pressures, many of
todays livestock rations are making more use of home grown
products such as whole crop wheat, straw, maize silage,
wheat, barley and oats. These feeds, however, still
require balancing with some rumen degradable protein. Also
a source of sugar is useful to balance the starch in the other
feeds and help feed the rumen bugs. Golden Malt Syrup
provides the perfect solution at a highly competitive price.

lambs due to the mineral content which may cause urinary calculi in males unless an
allowance is made in the mineral supplementation. While widely used for many years
in pig and compound diets, Wheatfeed is now commonly used as a straight feed for
ruminants.

Processed Bread
Description
Processed Bread is largely yesterdays bread, removed from
the food supply to be replaced by a freshly-baked product,
but also includes a proportion of todays production
which failed to satisfy QA checks at the bakery. Before it
reaches the farm it will have been shredded and sieved to
remove a majority of the wrappings.

Countrywide Alternative Feeds - 0845 673 2100

Feeding
Dairy - feeding should be introduced over a period of time
i.e. 10 14 days and included in diets at up to 6g / head / day
Beef - when feeding beef cattle, feeding rates must not exceed the total DM intake of
the animal, and again like dairy cattle feed rates, should be built up over a period of
time (10-14 days)
Pigs - feeding rates in pigs can be as much as 30% of DM intake. As there is a low
fibre content in the bread a balancer should also be used i.e. Wheatfeed or SugarBeet Pulp

71

Key Features
High starch and energy values
Highly digestible
Fresh product
Competitively priced against cereals
Storage and Availability
Processed bread should ideally be stored in dry conditions, preferably under cover,
as bread will quickly absorb water. The product has a shelf life of 20-30 days and, if
fed in this time, then there is no need to ensile. However, if product is well
consolidated and properly sheeted, then the shelf life can be extended up to several
months. As bread can be quite sticky, ensure adequate tipping height to ensure load
is offloaded satisfactorily.

Sugar beet is a combination of sugar beet fibres, after the
extraction of sugar from the beet. Molasses is then added
back in and dried. The dried product is then sold as Shreds,
Pellets, Nuts and Superflow. Home produced supplies are
finite so early ordering will ensure supply.

Key Features
High digestible fibre content
Good energy source
Good for animal health
Generally available all year round
Can be used for all types of livestock and feeding systems
Non GM
Storage & Availability
As with all other dried feeds Molassed Sugar Beet Feed should be stored in cool, dry

Energiser 65 Dry (FWT)

Description
A unique dry form of propylene glycol (65%) to bridge
energy gap in dairy cows around calving. Propylene glycol
stimulates insulin and glucose production in the dairy cow.
Pre-calving increases of insulin improves egg follicle
development, leading to larger follicles at ovulation and a
more definitive oestrus. Insulin also reduces fat mobilisation
and prevents fatty liver, improving liver function to allow the
cow to better meet requirements for high milk yield.
Key Features
Reduces risk of fatty livers
improves liver function

Countrywide Alternative Feeds - 0845 673 2100

Feeding
Feed 3 - 4 weeks pre - calving and up to 12 weeks post calving at up to 150g per
cow per day, mixed in home mix

95

Poor weather at harvesting of grass silage, maize silage,

whole crop silage, and cereals can lead to greater mould
growth and a consequently greater risk of mycotoxin
presence in feeds. Mycotoxins can impair animal health and
performance through reduced feed conversion and reduced nutrient absorption,
impaired reproductive performance, and depressed immune responses.
Indicators of mycotoxin challenges include, under performing animals, rough coats
and listlessness, sporadic scouring and loose manure, mucous tags in fresh manure,
swollen hocks and teats, and poor fertility.
Feeding
Dairy, beef - 150g / head / day for one week included in the TMR or sprinkled over
the feed, followed by reduced levels of 100g or 50g / day depending on the level of
challenge
Key Features
Increased feed intake

SoyPass / Sopralin
Description
SoyPass is a high quality protein feed, rich in digestible
protein (DUP), produced using a patented process, which
doubles the amount of by-pass protein in Soya Bean meal.
The process takes advantage of naturally occurring wood
sugar which, when mixed with soya binds to part of the
protein, protecting it from digestion in the rumen. During the
production of SoyPass, careful process control procedures
ensure that the proteins become highly un-degradable but
retain the intestinal digestibility of untreated Soya Bean meal.
SoyPass supplies this protein in a highly digestible form, providing the right profile of
amino acids for milk and tissue production. The high proportion of bypass protein
ensures that the total protein content of the ration does not increase, thereby
reducing problems with fertility and pollution. Supplementing SoyPass in transition
period rations has shown to improve milk production over the following lactation.
Feeding
SoyPass is best suited to medium and high performance cows fed farm mixed rations
or home grown bulk feeds.
Typical inclusion rates:
Dairy cows 0.5-2kg / head / day
Calves up to 10% of diet

The extensive Countrywide Dairy Feed range has been designed to complement the
wide range of dairy herd feeding and management systems, and with increased
pressure on margins from depressed milk prices and other costs, it is critical to match
the correct feed with the other forages, cereals and straights available on farm. The
wide range of feeds allows milk quality to be manipulated to optimize milk returns
against quality constraints imposed by milk supply contracts. The dairy feeds are
formulated from a limited range of high quality ingredients, with raw materials like
cocoa shell, olive pulp, shea nuts, and groundnut being excluded from the feeds.
The range also includes calf, dry cow and heifer rearing feeds.
