LockheedandtheFederalAviationAdministration(FAA)haveworkedtogetherformorethana
decadetodefinethecriteriatocertifyhybridairshipsfortransport.
TheFAAapprovedthecriteriain2013andsincethenLockheedhasbeendevelopinga'project
specificcertificationplan'todetailhowitwillfollowthesenewregulations.

Itwillhaveafuelcapacityof5,000gallonwith
arangeof1,400nauticalmiles.

'Theapprovalofthecertificationplanrepresentsanimportantriskreductionmilestoneforour
customers,'programmanagerRobertBoydsaidinastatement.

Itsfourhovercraftlikelandingpadswould
allowittosetdownonflatlandwithoutbeing
requiredtobemooredonlargetowerslike
traditionalairships.

It'shopedthatairshipswillchangethewayoilandminingcompanieshaulequipmenttoremote
areas,suchastheArctic,withoutroadsorinfrastructure,enablingaffordabledeliveryofheavycargo
andpersonnel.

Currentestimatessuggeststhepriceofthe
hybridairshipwillbebetween25millionto
30million,orapproximately$40million.

Butitcouldalsobeusedformilitaryapplications.'Ifamilitarycustomerwasinterested,wewoulddo

Thevesselwasfilledwith1.3millioncubicfeetofheliumenoughtofill15Olympicsizedswimmingpoolssoitcouldfloatabovetheground.

Itisahybridofanaeroplaneandanairship60percentofitsliftcomesfromtheheliumitisfilledwithwhiletheother40percentcomesfromitswings.
Itwillbeabletostayintheairfortwoweeksatatime,cruisingatmorethan90mph,andtravelatheightsofupto20,000ftwitha10tonnecargo.
