What is an Emerging Health Leader?

EMERGING: an individual in the first 15 years of their health career or recently appointed to a
leadership role

HEALTH: an individual whose career enables them to promote health and wellness, manage illness
and prevent disease, with consideration of the determinants of health

LEADER: an individual who takes initiative to improve their leadership skills with the hope of
increasing their impact and influencing others in positive ways

Are you planning on moving from another sector into a health related field or from a frontline health related role into a leadership position?
Do you aspire to influence decisions that affect the health of others?

Is the intended focus for your career to create the conditions for citizens and communities to
live well?
Are you looking to engage in productive partnerships with government, health system, and

EHL was birthed in 2006 out of a desire to create a forum for young health leaders, formal learning
opportunities, informal networking opportunities, enable leadership development, as well as to
facilitate knowledge exchange.
EHL currently consists of one National Executive and 7 Node Executives located in:
Calgary, Edmonton, London, Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
Each node operates independently; however, Co-Chairs meet monthly with the National Executive.

To develop emerging health system leaders across Canada

Mission
To provide opportuniFes to support the development of emerging health leaders through the
creaFon of knowledge exchange networks, educaFonal events, mentoring relaFonships and
informed health care and related discussions

Mandate
Through networking and educaFonal events, Emerging Health Leaders provides a forum for
open, collaboraFve and construcFve dialogue on Fmely naFonal health issues. EHL targets
young health leaders from a cross secFon of health employers in the public, private and not-forprot sector.
Members of EHL will meet to share workplace experiences and perspecFves, discuss recent
health system publicaFons, communicate forthcoming events including seminars, workshops
and conferences as well as engage in rich discussions on a host of poliFcal and health related
issues.

EHL Nova Scotia


Engaging Today for a Healthy Tomorrow

EHL Nova Scotia (EHL NS) was established in January 2014. The executive committee includes a
Chair, Chair-Elect, Membership Director, Communications Director, Events Director, Partnerships
Director and Financial Director. To support the healthy growth of EHL, an advisory council of existing
Health Leaders was formed to support the NS Executive.
Since the launch in 2014, EHL NS has offered several successful opportunities for education and
mentoring, partnered with two major health conferences in Halifax and Charlottetown, and
established key connections with local health leaders, paving the way for future events.

CHAIR ELECT
The Chair Elect will join the Emerging Health Leaders Nova Scotia Executive in fulfilling the
Vision, Mission, Mandate and Strategic Directions of EHL Canada and EHL Nova Scotia.
Qualifications
Strong organizational skills and problem solving abilities
Self motivated and able to work independently, respecting timelines
Excellent interpersonal, team-building and communication skills
Ability to formulate and oversee strategic directions, governance models, and develop
implementation plans
Position Description
Official representative for EHL Nova Scotia
Lead EHL Nova Scotia meetings when Chair unavailable
Schedule regularly occurring meetings with the Executive and Advisory Council
Attend monthly EHL Canada meetings in place of Chair when required
Record and disseminate minutes for EHL Nova Scotia Executive meetings within 7
days post meeting
Assist the Chair in preparing the agenda for EHL Nova Scotia Executive meetings
Sit on other committees as required
Work with Communications Director to develop seasonal newsletters
Represent the majority decision of EHL Nova Scotia when acting on its behalf
Monitor and be knowledgeable of all EHL Nova Scotias activities
Discuss matters of concern with EHL Nova Scotia Executive
Work with Chair to evaluate & prepare a bi-annual performance report for EHL Nova
Scotia
Assist Chair with planning and leading an annual strategic planning session with the
EHL Nova Scotia Executive (each June)
Help guide and mediate EHL Nova Scotia Executive actions with respect to
organizational priorities and governance concerns
Encourage accountability to the Advisory Council
Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the EHL Nova Scotia Executive
Monitor finances, and has co-signing authority in regards to EHL Nova Scotia
cheques.
Co-signs sponsorship agreements with sponsors.
Commitment
The Chair Elect position is a 2-year commitment (June 2016 June 2018) with the
hopes that the Chair Elect would eventually fill the Chair position when it is vacated.

iii. What do you hope to achieve as part of the EHL Nova Scotia Executive?

The successful applicant will be notified by May 25th, 2016 and required to attend EHLs
annual planning session on June 4th, 9am 1pm.
