1. A single phase Semi-converter is operated from 120V, 50 Hz ac supply. The load
resistance is 10 ohm. If the average output voltage is 25% of the maximum possible
average output voltage, determine

2. A 220 V dc shunt motor has an armature circuit resistance of 0.2 ohm and field resistance
of 110 ohm. At no load the motor takes 5 A and runs at 1500 rpm. If the motor draws 52
A at rated voltage and load, calculate the motor speed and its rated shaft torque in Nm.
The rotational losses at no load and full load are the same. Neglect armature reaction.
3. A 60 HP, 230 V DC shunt motor has armature resistance of 0.05 and field circuit
resistance of 60 . The no load speed is 1000 rpm. Find the speed when line current is (a)
75A (b) 150 A (c) 250 A
4. A 240 V, DC series motor has resistance of 0.2 . When the line current is 40 A, the
speed is 1800 rpm. Find the resistance to be added in series with the motor, (a) to limit
the speed to 3600 rpm when the line current is 10 A [Assume that between lines currents
of 10 A and 40 A, the flux is proportional to current] (b) to make the motor run at 900
rpm when the line current is 60 A [Assume that flux at 60 A is 1.18 times the flux at 40
A]. (c) Find the speed of the motor when it is connected directly to the mains and line
current is 60A.
5. A 240 V, DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.4 . The field current is
constant. The full load speed is 600 rpm and full load current is 25 A. A resistance of 1
is connected in series with armature. Find (a) speed at full load torque, (b) speed at twice
the full load torque.
6. A series motor runs at 500 rpm when taking a current of 60 A at 460 V. Motor has
armature resistance of 0.2 and field circuit resistance of 0.1 . Calculate the speed
when a 0.15 diverter is connected in parallel with field winding. Assume the torque to
remain unaltered and flux proportional to the field current.

7. A 6 pole, lap wound armature, having 720 conductors rotates in field of 20.35mWb.
(a) if the armature current is 78 A, what is the torque developed by the armature? (b) If
the induced armature voltage is 420 V, what is the motor speed?
8. A 480-V, 60 Hz, 50-hp, three phase induction motor is drawing 60A at 0.85 PF lagging.
The stator copper losses are 2 kW, and the rotor copper losses are 700 W. The friction

and windage losses are 600 W, the core losses are 1800 W, and the stray losses are
negligible. Find the following quantities:
a. The air-gap power PAG.
b. The power converted Pm.
c. The output power Pout.
d. The efficiency of the motor.
9. A 460-V, 25-hp, 60 Hz, four-pole, Y-connected induction motor has the following
impedances in ohms per phase referred to the stator circuit:
a. R1= 0.641 R2= 0.332, X1= 1.106, X2= 0.464, XM= 26.3.
b. The total rotational losses are 1100 W and are assumed to be constant. The core
loss is lumped in with the rotational losses. For a rotor slip of 2.2 percent at the
rated voltage and rated frequency, find the motors

m=30 . The rotational losses are 1700 watts. With the rotor terminals short-circuited,
find
(a) (i) Starting current when started direct on full voltage.(ii) Starting torque.
(b) (i) Full-load slip.(ii) Full-load current.(iii) Ratio of starting current to full-load
current.(iv) Full-load power factor.(v) Full-load torque.(iv) Internal efficiency and
motor efficiency at full load.
(c) (i) Slip at which maximum torque is developed.(ii) Maximum torque developed.
(d) How much external resistance per phase should be connected in the rotor circuit
so that maximum torque occurs at start?

11. A three-phase, 460 V, 60 Hz, six-pole wound-rotor induction motor drives a constant
load of 100 N - m at a speed of 1140 rpm when the rotor terminals are short-circuited. It
is required to reduce the speed of the motor to 1000 rpm by inserting resistances in the
rotor circuit. Determine the value of the resistance if the rotor winding resistance per
phase is 0.2 ohms. Neglect rotational losses. The stator-to-rotor turns ratio is unity
