when necessarv In the event of v~olent~ m pacts from which a seat belt alone would not
offersufficient protection. It is a dual system,
acting both on the a~rbagitself (a bag incor.
porated into the central part of the steering
wheel which inflates on impact) and on the
pretensioning seat belt (which pulls the body
against the seat).
In the event of a frontal ~ o l l ~ s ~
the
o nImpact
detector for the airbag and for the pre-tensioning seat belts records the sudden dece.
leration of the car at the moment of collision.
It sends an electric impulse to the module
situated in the centre of the steering wheel
and to the pre-tensioning retractors of the
front seat belts.

The airbag, folded i n the central pariof the

steering wheel, is treed and inflates instantaneously.
At the same moment, a force is exerted on
the reel spindle of the belts.
In afraction of asecond theairbag fills the
empty space between the steerlng wheel
and the driver, thus preventing the headand
the chest from being thrown forward.
In addition, the strap of the seat belt tightens, automatically reducing its freedom of
movement: the driver i s therefore firmly
held against the seat.
The energy ofthe impact is therefore partially
absorbed andthe effectivenessof the airbag
is greatly increased.
Immediately alter the impact, the gas in the
airbag escapes through an opening at the
OacK of lne c-snion. li does hot therefore
impede the visibility of the driver nor their
possible exit from the vehlcle.
Passenger airbag*
This operates simultaneouslywith the driver's
airbag and according to the same principle.

Roof r a c k

Tyres

Fitting a roof rack

Use a roof rack or bars which have been
approved by PEUGEOT.

The tyre pressures must be checked t o

ensure that they always comply with the
manufacturer's recommendations.

Use the anchorage polnts specified by the

manufacturer (4 captive nuts under the top
door seals)

Caravans and towing

Tow bar:
Use a tow bar whlch has been approved and
recommended by Peugeot
Regularly grease the towlng ball Remove the
tow hltch as soon as you have flnlshedtowlng
Spread loads inside the caravan and observe
the load limit on the tow hitch (110 Ibs. or
50 ko maxl

Before settino off

Checkthetyre pressures,lighting and signalling
on the caravan or trailer.
Adjust the headlights in order to avoid dazzling
other drivers.
Practise manoeuvrina, esDeciallv reversina.
On the road

wheel. These checks must be carried out
when cold as the pressure gradually
increases as the tyres warm up while dliving.

Loading the roof rack

Observe the loading capacities and spread
the load evenly (165 Ibs. or 75 ka. max.).
Place the heaviest load as close to the roof
as possible.
Secure the load and flag any overhanging
load

'

Correct tyre pressures ensure:

- better road holding

- accurate driving and ease af manoeuvring
- fuel economy, since the tyres deform less
-increased tyre life
The use of "environmentally friendly" tyres
allows a 3 to 5% reduction in overall
consumption.

Never deflate the tyres when they are

warm.

Tyre wear indicators

On the road
Sensitivity to side winds is increased: drive
smoothly at moderate speed.

Remove Ihe roof rack or bars as soon as the

load IS removed

These wear indicators are moulded into the

rubber across the tread at regular intervals
around the tyre.
When changing or repairing tubeless tyres.
always change the valve.

......................................................................................
Save fuel and reduce pollution
Fuel consumption does not just depend on
the design and technical characteristicsof the
vehicle, 11alsodepends on you. Followingthe
advice below wlll reduce consumption considerably.
Keep your vehicle in good condition
Follow the manufacturer's recommended
maintenance schedule.
Engine tuning
It is advisable to checkthe important components at least once a year.
Air filter
A cnoggeo fllter reduces eng.ne elf c ency

Inadequate maintenance may compromise
engine reliability.

Drive smoothly
Keep in mind a few simple rules:
on starting: there is no need to warm up the
engine. Drive at a moderate speed ~nitially
accelerating gradually without reaching high
engine speeds.
while driving: engage the highest gear
possible in order to maintain a satisfactory
engine speed without labouring the engine.
Dr~veat a steady, regular speed. Avoid sudden
braking or acceleration by anlicipating variallons in traffic movementso as not to be taken
by surprise.
Watch your speed
Consumption increases with speed: between
70 and 80 mph (110 and 130 krnlh) for
example, consumption increases by approximately 25%.
Plan your journeys
Remember that in the first few minutes hvice
as much fuel id consumed as usual i s the
engine has not reachedits optimum operating
temperature.
In town, traffic conditions mean that fuel
consumption 1s high.
On the open road, if possible choose routes
which avoid built-up areas and congestion.

Load your vehicle sensibly

Avoid carrying luggage on the roof. If this is
necessary, distribute the load eveniy keeping
the volume to a minlmum (maximum weight
165 Ibs or 75kg).
If a heavy load is to be carried, use a low
trailer if possible. This will keep the increase
in consulnpllon lo a minimum.
Do not forget to remove roof bars and caravan
air dellectors when they are no longer needed.
Do not carry unnecessaryloads in the vehicle.
They will increasefuel consumptionunnecessarily.
Only use accessories approved by Automobiles PEUGEOT and follow the safety advice.

Catalytic converter

Driving

Some precautionswhen using petrol-engined

vehicies fitted with catalytic converters.

On starting:
Avoid repeated cold starts.
Avoid starting by pushing or towing

Petrol
Use only unleaded petrol.
F II "p as soon as me 0.u 1.e. warn.ng ignt
comes on. oriv'ng w tn a low fue leve can
cause misfiring.
Never add any additives to the oil: they can
cause serious damage to the catalytic converter.
Only use those fuel additives which are
recommended by the manufacturer.

Driving
Never accelerate just before switching Off.
Avoid parkingor driving on easily inflammable
substances such as dry leaves.

If you find:
-difficulty in starting: contact a PEUGEOT
dealer.
- misfiring or lackof power: reduce speed and
have the system checked as soon as
possible.
- a n abnormally high noise level: have the
exhaust system checked.
