Identify the problem, the requirements of the

project and the objectives of the project.


The objectives of the project should focus on critical

issues which are aligned with:

Companys business strategy

Customers requirements

Define Phase Activities


1.

Nominate projects for improvements

2. Evaluate nominated projects and select a project


3. Estimate the financial impact of the problem; and
4. Define customer requirements called Critical-to-

Quality (CTQ) characteristics;


5. Create a project charter;
6. Obtain senior management approval of the project

Define Phase Questions


What matters to the customers?
What Defect are we trying to reduce?
By how much?
By when?
What is the current Cost of defects?
Who will be in the project team?
Who will support us to implement this project?

Deliverables
One or more of the following three critical

deliverables:

3. Schedule
Define what is critical to any of these deliverables.

Nominate Projects
Reduce defect rate
Reduce waste of material
Reduce idle time of labor or equipment
Increase labor or equipment productivity rates
Reduce cycle time

Criteria of evaluation may include:
Impact
Project acquires higher score as much as its positive impact on the
organization image.
How chronic
Project acquires higher score as much it considered chronic problem in
the organization.
Duration
Project acquires higher score as less as the expected project duration.

Criteria of evaluation may include:
Expenses
Project acquires higher score as less as the expected project expenses.
Financial revenue
Project acquires higher score as much as the financial revenue of project.
Potential Resistance
Project acquires higher score as less as the potential resistance to project.
