Characteristics

Temporary diet of clear liquids


without residue.
Nonstimulating, non-gasforming, non-irritating.
400-500 kcal.

Foods liquid at room

all fruit juices without pulp.

Fruit and vegetable juices.
Eggnogs.
Plain ice cream and sherbets.
Junket and plain gelatin dishes.
Soft custard.
Cereal gruels.
Pureed meat and meat
substitutes only; for use in soup
only.
Butter, cream, margarine, sugar,
honey, hard candy, syrup; salt,
pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, and
flavorings; pureed vegetables
for use in soups only.

All liquids.
Fine and strain cereals.
Cooked tender or pureed

Cooked fruit without skin
and seeds.

Liberal clear liquid diet includes


fruit juices, egg white, whole
egg, thin gruels.

Consistency for tube feedings:


food that will pass through tube
easily.

Low residue-no fiber or


tough connective tissue.
Traditional bland-no
chemical, thermal, physical
stimulants.
Cold soft-tonsillectomy.
Mechanical or dental softrequiring no masticationdiced, chopped, mashed
foods in place or pureed.
Light or convalescence dietintermediate between soft
and regular.

For a light or convalescence


diet, fried foods, rich pastries,
fat-rich foods, coarse
vegetables, possibly raw fruits
and vegetables, and gasforming vegetables may be
omitted.
