Description
To ensure long term security for the “Urfttalsperre” dam, construction
works on the ground tunnel in the years 1994 to 2000 have been exe-
cuted. Among other measurements the flow measurement of the lead
over from the 60 m higher Urft-lake in the lower lake has been erected.
The problem was the realisation of the measurement in the deep tunnel
of the dam between the two lakes.
At first the planners thought about magmeters to solve the problem. Ex-
tensive construction works would have been necessary for only moving Urft dam
the magmeters to their final destination in the ground tunnel. Due to tre-
mendous cost for such adaptations the engineers looked for an alterna-
tive and found the FLUXUS ADM ultrasonic flowmeter from FLEXIM.
The small transducers and the electronics could easily be brought to their
final destination in the dam. Without cutting of the pipework, weldings and
shut down of the line the instrument was set into operation within less
then half a day. It covers a huge dynamic range from some millimetres
per second flow velocity up to some meters. The measurement is used to
record the water quantity and protect the system against to high flow
velocities and the ring pipe against burst. After final tests under all possi-
ble flow conditions that can occur during operation the instrument was
approved as safe and stable.
