THAI AGRICULTURAL STANDARD

GOOD AQUACULTURE PRACTICES FOR MARINE BIO-SHRIMP FARM

1. SCOPE
This standard establishes Good Aquaculture Practices (GAP) for Marine Bio-Shrimp Farm,
which applies to farm practices in marine Bio-Shrimp culture including harvesting and
post-harvest handlings.
2. DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this standard:
2.1
Marine shrimp means the shrimp in genus Penaeus (Penaeus spp.), Metapenaeus
(Metapenaeus spp.) and Litopenaeus (Litopenaeus spp.) such as black tiger shrimp (Penaeus
monodon), banana prawn (Penaeus merquiensis) and white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei).
2.2
Marine Bio-Shrimp means the marine shrimp that is cultured according to biological
principles as defined in 2.3.
2.3
Marine Bio-Shrimp farm means marine shrimp farm that follows the Good
Aquaculture Practices by using living organisms and related products of living organisms to
keep the balance of nature in the culture pond without using any kind of veterinary drugs and
prohibited chemicals.

TAS 7424-2011

3. Requirements
The requirements shall be as Table 1.
Table 1. Requirements
(Section 3)
Items

Requirements

1. Prerequisite Standard 1. Farm has been certified in Good Aquaculture Practices for
Marine Shrimp Farm (TAS 7401) and shall not be on the status of
suspension or revocation.
2. Farm Site

2.1 Farm shall have documents to demonstrate the history of land

use, including information of the surrounding area indicating that
there is no risk of contamination from pesticides, residues of
veterinary drugs, chemicals, heavy metals and pathogenic
microorganisms causing diarrhea or digestive system disorders.
In case of risk, the analytical report of contamination from
reliable laboratory shall be presented to the government officer.
2.2 Availability of buffer area or pond dike of at least 3 metres in
width that can prevent contamination from the surrounding
environment or other production systems that may use hazardous
chemicals.

3. Transition Period

3. Transition period shall be at least one production cycle (from

pond preparation to harvesting) in compliance with the
requirements of this standard. The transition period may vary
depending on the level of risk evaluation obtained from the history
of land use.

4. Farm Managements

4.1 Manual of marine Bio-Shrimp Farming shall be made

available and implemented.
4.2 Shrimp larvae shall not be treated with veterinary drugs.
4.3 Appropriate stocking density of shrimp larvae shall be as follows:
- white shrimp: At the development stages of not less than post
larva (PL) 12, the stocking density shall not exceed 80,000 PL/rai
(1 rai= 1600 m2).
- black tiger shrimp: At the development stages of not less than post
larva (PL) 15, the stocking density shall not exceed 50,000 PL/rai.

Requirements
4.4 The sufficient amount of natural feed in the culture pond shall
be made available for the shrimp larvae to live naturally from the
first day that they are released in the pond without using fresh feed
and formulated feed except live feed such as brine shrimp nuaplii
and mysis.
- white shrimp: At least 7 days
- black tiger shrimp: At least 14 days
4.5 Feeding shall be managed efficiently.
4.6 Water quality and shrimp health shall be monitored and
controlled to maintain the shrimp in good health by using
biological principles such as the use of probiotics and
phytoplankton.
4.7 Workers shall be trained to acquire knowledge and skill on
marine Bio-Shrimp farm practices according to the biological
principles.

5. The Use of
Veterinary Drugs and
Chemicals

5.1 The use of all veterinary drugs is strictly prohibited.

6. Effluent and
Sediment Management

6.Effluent and sediment qualities shall be met the requirements of

law by applying the biological principles such as:
- use seaweed, mangrove or constructed wetland to treat the
effluent from farm prior to discharge into a natural water
resource;
- use closed recirculation systems;
- use marine fish or other aquatic animals such as marine
mollusks or sea cucumbers to treat the effluent and the
sediment in culture or treatment pond for reusing in a new
production cycle;
- use sediment as fertilizer for growing vegetables and crops in
the farm, or treat the sediment with water to release nutrients
as natural feed in a new production cycle;
- use probiotics to treat the sediment.

5.2 The use of chemicals is prohibited with the exception of

permitted substances specified in Appendix A.

TAS 7424-2011

Items

reduced immediately by immersing in water or ice at temperatures
between 5 oC to 10 oC.
In both cases, ice and containers shall be clean.
- in case of sizing shrimp within the farm, working area shall be
clean and hygienic. The sizing (from sizing to packing the
produce prior to transportation) of each container shall be
completed within 15 minutes.
8.3 Any worker responsible for harvesting or sizing shall be in
good health, not infected with any digestive system disease or
severe contagious disease. They shall have no opened, infected or
other wounds which possibly cause contamination to shrimp.
8.4 The produce shall be transported to the buyer in a hygienic
manner.

9. Record Keeping

9. Documents and records shall be maintained and updated.
