HISTORY OF BIRLA SUN LIFE INSURANCE

When Mathew Hamilton Gault received a charter for The Sun Insurance Company
of Montreal in 1865, few could have foreseen that the fledgling company would
grow to become a leading international financial services organization. What a
difference a century and a half makes.
Today, were a homegrown success story. Through our operations, subsidiaries and
joint ventures, we are proud to serve millions of people in Canada, the United
States, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, the Philippines, China, Indonesia, India,
Japan and Bermuda.
In big cities and small towns, from Montreal to Manila, Sun Life is there.
Expanding the horizon for financial services. And designing products and services
that are right for the times.
7

CEO message
Building a brighter tomorrow Our 2010 Public Accountability Statement
At Sun Life, 2010 was a year of renewed focus and learning across our corporate
responsibility portfolio. We increased support within our key priorities of health
16
LIFE INSURANCE

and wellness, culture and financial literacy. We witnessed exciting changes in the
fields of preventive medicine, mental health, wellness initiatives and programs for
children and youth. Importantly, we learned a great deal from the impact of the
global financial crisis from which most, but not all, countries are emerging.
Financial literacy has come to the fore internationally as an economic imperative.
As we work to help people achieve a secure and confident future for themselves
and their families, strengthened financial literacy will enable them to be more
resilient for whatever the future holds. As Chair of Canadas Task Force on
Financial Literacy, I lead a team dedicated to Canadas first national strategy on
financial literacy.
We invested more than $4 million in health and wellness-related causes, to help
advance research into the mobility needs of an aging population, as well as mental
health programs for children, adolescents and women. We supported a wellness
program based on illness prevention through self-assessment, helped to fund a new,
technologically advanced treatment option for breast cancer, and worked to counter
the economic impact of absenteeism.
Access to the arts enriches the societies in which we live, work and do business. In
2010, we increased our support for arts and culture with our making the Arts More
Accessible program. This program helps break down social, physical and financial
barriers to the performing arts, museums, galleries and other cultural venues.
As a founding visionary of Culture Days, we were proud to see thousands of
Canadians come face-to-face with artists, performers and musicians in a coast-tocoast-to-coast celebration of the arts. We expanded our sustainability efforts,
including improvements to our environmental programs and strategies for upgrades
to the real estate assets that we own and manage. And we achieved a new best-inclass environmental designation for the renovation of our global headquarters.
These are some of the ways we are building a brighter tomorrow.

In the U.S. we marked 15 years as corporate sponsor of the Boston Marathons
Jimmy Fund Walk, raising funds in support of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to
continue the development of effective cancer therapies for children.
In Asia, Sun Life Hong Kong received its 9th Caring Company award from the
Hong Kong Council of Social Service recognizing the efforts of our volunteers,
environmental efforts, employee relations and overall charitable giving. And Sun
Life Everbrite in China was recognized for its SLEB Walk social benefit campaign.
Empowering through education
We support organizations and institutions with innovative programs. In Canada, our
support of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics Public Lecture Series
allows the general public to listen to, and interact with, some of the worlds most
recognized leaders in scientific thinking. In the U.S., we invested US$1.2 million in
our Sun Life Rising Star Awards, providing grants and scholarships to encourage
at-risk youth to stay in school. The Sun Life Financial Philippines Foundation
collaborated with the Knowledge Channel Foundation to produce unique first-year
high school mathematics and science courses which aired nation-wide. In
Indonesia, our Sun Bright for Education program focuses on education, through
scholarships, supplies and equipment.
Working toward a sustainable future
Lifes brighter when the future is sustainable. We believe that sustainability begins
at home, in the way we manage our buildings, improve the environment in our
offices, and conserve water, electricity and paper to help lighten our environmental
footprint. Sustainability also means investing in the future from an environmental
and social perspective. Its why were a leader in the Canadian financial services
sector when it comes to investing in projects of environmental value, such as those
that provide clean and renewable energy. And why we continue to invest millions in
projects of social value like schools, medical facilities and other essential services.
In 2010, Sun Life received increased recognition at the national, North American
and global levels for our sustainability initiatives. We are a member of the Dow
29
LIFE INSURANCE

Jones Sustainability Index North America and we were listed for the 10th
consecutive year in the Financial Times and London Stock Exchanges
FTSE4Good Index, which recognizes companies meeting globally, recognized
standards for environmental sustainability, social betterment, stakeholder relations
and human rights protection. Were also proud to be one of the 2011 Global 100
Most Sustainable Corporations in the World for managing social, environmental
and governance issues.
Donations & sponsorships
At Sun Life, were proud of our reputation as a good corporate citizen. But what
does that mean on a global scale?
It means we give back to the communities where we live, work and do business.
From Canada and the U.S. to Hong Kong, Indonesia and the Philippines, were
making our charitable mark through donations and sponsorships to a wide range of
charities, cultural organizations and causes.
