Moorestown is all about the
community. Residents are asked
to shop local and come together

Our Lady of Good Counsel student Jamie Dunn, 9, was chosen
as the winner of the Moorestown
Librarys Design a Childrens Library Card Contest. The library
received 87 original designs and
selected Jamie's drawing of a colorful shelf full of books spelling
out "My Moorestown Library

I felt very excited that my library card was chosen, Jamie
said.
Ever since the new library
opened in July 2014, it has been
signing up new members at much
higher rates, according to Childrens Librarian Jen Dunne.
When Karen Campbell, the library's office manager, noticed it
was time to order more library
cards, she got the idea of having a
different design just for the children's cards.
Several vendors offered premade children's designs, but

The contest was announced

Ordinances address
hockey rink, parking
lot reconstruction
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Some major projects are soon
to be started and awarded in
Moorestown.
Town Council unanimously approved two ordinances on first
reading, one for the reconstruction of the Second Street municipal parking lot and the other for
the reconstruction of the hockey
rink at Wesley Bishop Park. Both,
if approved on second reading,
are planned to start during the
summer.
Moorestowns new engineer,
Bill Long of the Alaimo Group,
who replaced Jim Ruddiman
after he retired, spoke on both of
the projects during his report to
council.
The reconstruction of the Second Street municipal parking lot
received a bid of $970,000 from
Ricky Slade Construction. From
the ordinance, $1 million is being
appropriated for the project. This

includes new curbing, piping,

tree removal and any other details related to the complete reconstruction of the parking lot.
The reconstruction of the
hockey rink at Wesley Bishop
Park was bid for $341,000 also by
Ricky Slade Construction. A total
of $150,000 is being appropriated
for the project, according to the
ordinance. As part of that project,
the dasher boards that are removed from the hockey rink will
be repurposed for the hockey rink
at Jeff Young Park. The township
received a $250,000 grant to put toward work on the hockey rink
project, and $80,000 is pledged
from the Moorestown Youth
Hockey Association.
According to Long, the estimates for both projects from
Ricky Slade Construction came
in lower than what was predicted.
Long also said the construction
for the parking lot went as high as

Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

is May 30 at Memorial Field
By KAHRA F. BUSS
Dept. of Parks & Recreation
On Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m.,
the Moorestown Department of
Parks & Recreation will sponsor
the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Memorial Field on
Church Street. This year marks
the 30th anniversary of the Memorial Day Ceremony and will
pay special tribute to the service
men and women who served during the Korean War. The Korean
War was a defining moment in
Americas history, militarizing a
conflict that had largely been economic and political up to that
point. The Korean War is noted as
being a major turning point in
the Cold War era as it confronted
authoritarianism abroad.
The first Memorial Day ceremonies date back to the late 1800s,

following the Civil War. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, in 1868 an organization of Union Army veterans, the
Grand Army of the Republic, established Decoration Day as a
time for the nation to reunite
after its most deadly and destructive war. The Civil War tested the
strength of the United States and
its citizens, and Decoration Day
was an opportunity for healing.
While many places in the United
States claim to have been the first
to observe this holiday, it was not
until 1971 that Memorial Day was
declared a national holiday by an
Act of Congress. The words of
Gen. John A. Logan of the GAR

Grads: Savor the final days of your high school career

n just a few short weeks, high
school seniors throughout New
Jersey will be wrapping up their
final days of class, taking their final
high school tests and walking onto
their high school field one more time
for graduation.
Its an exciting time in the life of a
young man or young woman. The final
weeks of high school, the graduation
ceremony, the hugs and congratulations following, the celebrations that
will last throughout the summer and
the packing for, the drive to and the arrival at college are memories graduates will remember fondly.
To all the grads out there, while you
may want to rush these last days so
school can be out for summer, and so
high school can be out forever, remember to savor every remaining moment.
This may not mean much to you
right now, but there are experiences
you will have in these final days, these

replicate again. There are people you
will graduate with some friends,
some acquaintances, some whom you
grew up with whom you may never
see again.
There are some whom you are close
with now who you will grow apart
from over the years, and there are
some whom you will grow closer to as
your lives change.
Those wistful days of no responsibility will be behind you. Soon, you
will be on your own. You will have the
freedom to eat pizza for breakfast, stay
up until 4 a.m., take a nap in the middle of the day, go berzerk at a sporting

and skip a class if you want to note:
we dont recommend that last one.
The label high school student
came with a lot of restrictions on your
freedom, but it also gave you a get-outof-jail-free card, or cards. Once graduation is over, that label goes away. All
freedoms given to an American adult
will be yours.
But so, too, will all the consequences
of your actions. The decisions you
make from as serious as do I study
for this test? to should I eat another
burrito? will all have results that
will affect your life. Its a lot of responsibility. Its a good thing, for sure, but
it can also be a scary thing, becoming
an adult.
So, while you still have the option,
live life as a kid one last time. Savor
these last days of high school. And be
confident that you will do just fine.
Good luck and congratulations!

Moorestown water crisis
becoming a crisis of leadership
Your front-page article for May 4 to 10,
Township considers filters for radiological chemicals in water, shows that our
water crisis is rapidly becoming a crisis of
leadership.
Township manager Scott Carew, engineer L. Russell Trice and Mayor Phil Garwood are now reconfiguring the interim
solution they put forward in early March.
The original plan called for the deployment of a Calgon Carbon Corp. filtration
system designed to remove these two industrial solvents Trichloropropane (TCP
1,2,3) and Trichloroethylene (TCE) from
our drinking water. Thats not good enough

now.
The new plan requires additional equipment from Water Resources Technology
Inc., which will filter out radionuclides like
radium, gross alpha and other contaminants.
According to The Sun, the changes were
in response to citizen concern, but most
of the heat was applied by the Moorestown
Water Group. In April, MWG posted a detailed Fact Sheet on its Facebook page
arguing that the townships interim plan
would not remove dangerous radioactive
chemicals.
The township leaders knew the water
group was right, and they acknowledged as
much by changing their interim plan. The
worst part is that the township leaders
have the same information MWG has, but

they didnt include the radioactive contaminants in their interim solution until
they had to. When the people lead, the leaders will follow.
Since October 2014, when the state Department of Environmental Protection
recommended that both Church Street
wells be closed due to contamination, township leaders have repeatedly said our
water was always safe, that it is safe now,
and it will be even safer in the future.
We cant rely on such vague assurances
any longer. We have to act like adults, for
our childrens sake. This is the water they
bathe in, the water they drink.
We have no reason to believe in the interim solution or in the $20 million perplease see LETTER, page 17

Did you know that while

Moorestown has the highest property values in our region, we have
one of the lowest property tax
rates in Burlington County?
One of the important ways that
we are able to keep our taxes low
is by staffing our fire departments primarily with volunteers.
Our brave fire and EMS volunteers do a fantastic job keeping all
of us safe, and are always looking
for additional bodies to join their
ranks.
To that end, Deputy Mayor Victoria Napolitano and I have been
having conversations with township officials and our volunteer
fire companies over the last few
weeks to find ways in which

Together we are pushing to roll
out a number of discounts, fee
waivers and other benefits to
thank those who courageously
serve our town, while at the same
time saving taxpayer dollars and
encouraging more Moorestonians to volunteer.
This concept is truly win-win,
as our taxpayers will benefit by
continuing to receiving affordable top-notch emergency services while Moorestown Fire and
EMS are able to use these incentives to recruit new members that
will keep their tradition of service alive for generations to come.
Some of the ideas we are discussing include free programs
through the Department of Parks
and Recreation, including sports
programming, classes, theater
and more. Also under consideration are waiving fees for pet li-

All of us can do our part to support the men and women who
selflessly serve our community. If
you are a member of a club or organization that would like to

Jamie is proud of her design

JAMIE
Continued from page 1
Jamie, loving to read as well as
draw, thought it would be something fun to do and decided to try.
I thought it would be fun to do
and pretty cool if I won, but still,
if I didnt, fun to design, Jamie
said.
To get her idea, she thought of
a library full of bookshelves and,
seeing the email saying My First
Library Card, was inspired by
that.
When I think of a library, I
think of a book shelf. So I thought
it would be cool to make that into
a library card, Jamie said.
She began with a rough draft,
using paper and pencil. Once she
had her design, she worked to
make sure it was even, using a
ruler for the lines of the shelves
and books. She then outlined it
with a black marker and colored
it in with colored markers, finishing it off with having the books
spell My Moorestown Library
Card. She said she worked on it
over about three days, for an hour
or so each day.
Submitting it, I was a little
nervous. I knew even if I didnt
win, I was proud of myself,
Jamie said.
The contest idea proved to be
very popular, as it received 87 entries, all of which reflect a wide
variety of ideas and artistic
styles, and it was very challenging to choose just one, according
to Dunne.
We wanted something colorful with a strong concept that

looked like authentic child's artwork. In the end, Jamie's bookshelf design is crisp and full of
color, and we think it will come
across beautifully as a library
card, Dunne said.
When Jamie found out she
won, she was very excited and
happy.
The library staff was overwhelmed by all the creativity and
hard work the artists put into
each design. They loved the op-

portunity to see all the ways children depicted the library and the
reading experience, and wanted
to share that with the public. To
do so, library staff created a collage of all the designs wrapped
around the children's desk.
We encourage everyone to
come and see all the beautiful art
on display, Dunne said.
The new library card for children is scheduled to debut sometime this summer.

ceremony is Captain Andrew T.

Following Jacksons presentation, the roll call and remembrance will be done by Young and
the Moorestown Community Girl

Associate Pastor Martha Jordan

Long was expected to issue recommendations for these projects
last week.
Once awarded and approved by
council on second reading, the
Second Street municipal parking
lot reconstruction is expected to
begin at the end of June or early
July and be finished by the end of
summer. According to Long, the
parking lots will not be completely closed, as workers and shoppers will need to park, and will be
done in sections.
Construction for the hockey
rink would begin after the summer
season concludes around Aug. 1.
The second reading and final
approval of these ordinances will
be at the next council meeting on

workshop.
Long also gave updates on
many other projects being done
or to be done in the township.
Those include the annual report
for storm water management,
which was submitted and not expected to have any issues; a grant
awarded from the Department of
Transportation for improvements
on Borton Landing Road; Memorial Field improvements; the library and town hall complex,
which has a list of items that
need to be repaired, and some
items that have been addressed;
the old library demolition, which
is almost complete, with three
light poles still needing to be put
in; and bike lanes for Pleasant
Valley Avenue that will be added
on one side from Route 38 to the
municipal boundary.

give students and the school district an opportunity to show what

is going on in art classes, and also
as a way for the businesses to
show their support for the arts
and relationship with groups in
the community. Art is on display
at two stores, Health Haven and
Moorestown Hardware.
It's a great way for the community to see a sampling of what
our public schools create within
the visual arts classes. Our students create artwork that is creative, insightful and meaningful
throughout every grade level. The
arts help build strong communication, problem solving, as well
as technical skills which prepares
and provides students with the
skills necessary for success in the
21st century, Patricia Rowe, supervisor of arts and technology,
said.
(Moorestown businesses) are
all about shop local and being a
part of the community, and I
think that art can be very healing, so it is a great fit for (Health
Haven.) It makes me really happy
looking at all of this great artwork, Donna Wood of Health
Haven said.

the fruits of our kids labor,

MoorArts Visual Arts Trustee
Sophia Geiger said.
Art About Town started when
Wood approached Candace Coleman, MoorArts communications
trustee, at a Moorestown Business Association meeting in regard to displaying student artwork in her store window. She felt
art from local students would be a
great way to promote healthy living as well as foster the community.
What better way to advertise
what Health Haven is all about by
saying were about the community? Were here to be a part of the
community. So I thought it would
be a great idea to display the artwork, Wood said.
Hearing about the initiative at
the MBA meeting, Moorestown
Hardware owners Pete and Julie
Bender, liking to connect with the
community and having large windows that can often be hard to display, decided to participate in Art
About Town too.
For us, it is another connection with the town that we love. It
is really neat for the kids to see
their artwork, Pete said.
It brightens up the windows
and really helps us out, Julie
said.
Coleman, who loved the idea,
met with Geiger, Rowe and MTPS
art teacher Toni Paparone to
come up with the materials, timelines and artwork needs for the
stores involved. Both the high

school and middle school participated in preparing 24 student

pieces for display.
The honors visual arts students were currently working on
painting projects based on student views concerning social issues when the inception of this
exhibition was being discussed.
We thought these pieces would be
interesting to display throughout
the community. They communicate individual student views on
the various subject matter as well
as the artistic skills of our honors
art students, Paparone said.
So far, the response to Art
About Town has been very positive. Students are excited and
proud; the community has been
amazed and supportive; and business owners have been delighted
with the responses from the community.
No one can believe how astonishing these works were and by
middle school students So
many people took the time to
thank me for displaying the artwork. I could tell that the whole
community supports their children, Wood said.
I think people cant believe
that it is just high school students. Parents come in and thank
us for having it on display. Its just
another way to connect, Julie
said.
For the future, student artwork
will be rotated quarterly at the
current stores. The hope is to continue to build a stronger community and for more businesses to
take part in Art About Town.
(Wed like) to continue to
build a strong bond between the
community and our public
schools as well as build upon this
initiative to hopefully include
more store windows in the future, Paparone said.
I hope in years to come that
we can continue this tradition
with the art classes and all of the
schools in Moorestown, Wood
said.
