2. Overview of BSC Site

This section is intended to familiarize you with the checklists,
steps, and precautions for setting up the base station controller
(BSC). It connects to mobile switching center (MSC) through Ainterface using standard E1 and to base transceiver station (BTS)
through Abis interface over VNL transmission. The BSC rack
consists of the following:
Table 3: BSC Rack Components
Component Name

Number of Components

ICC card

EIC card

PSU 3U card

Root TU card

Input Output Panel

Root TU card in BSC rack converts E1 traffic into Ethernet traffic,

which is connected to the Root RU unit mounted on the top of
the tower. The Root RU is connected to the Root TU through a
standard POE CAT5E outdoor- Ethernet cable. Root RU
transports the Ethernet traffic from BSC end to transmission
distribution node (TDN) end.
The BSC rack is placed in the shelter at the installation tower as
shown in the following figure:

2.1 Pre-Installation Checklist

Following pre-installation checks must be performed before
setting up the BSC:

Availability of DC power for BSC - 48V DC / 350 W or +24V DC /

350 W as applicable.

Check for space for

o A self standing BSC rack (19 24U- 600X1200X800 mm).
o Table top space of 300X 500X650 mm to place the BSC
casing.

o Table top space for monitor.

o Check grounding <1 Ohm.

Check the mounting of Root RU, to be on tower top on the

nearby tower along with its Tier-1 grid antenna.

Check termination of all E1s from BSC to MSC and operations

management system (OMC) on the DDF.

2.2 Precautions
When you are setting up a BSC, you need to take the following
precautions:

Ensure that the BSC is installed indoors.

Please check water leakage should not be there in room.

Ensure that the table base is stable and the wall is robust
enough to hold the BSC.

Check the power supply in the following three situations:

o In case of AC option, check that the right power supply
module is available to you that converts input 230 V AC
to -48 V DC.
o In case of -48 V DC option, check the voltage level,
polarity and then connect.
o In case of +24 V DC option, check the voltage level,
polarity and then connect.
o Check BSC and all other equipment for proper
grounding.
Note: Table-top BSC is self-standing structure and can be
placed on a table top or mounted on the wall.

2.3 Steps for Installing BSC

Perform the following steps for installing BSC at the site:

Page 11

BSC S

1. Install grid antenna and Root RU on the tower top.

2. Connect RF cable N(M) to N(M) between Root RU and grid
antenna- 2.4 GHz.
3. Connectivity between Root TU and Root RU with Outdoor
type Cat 5e Ethernet cable.
4. Terminate E1 on the DDF. This E1 is used for SGSN (data), MSC
(voice), and OMC connectivity.
5. Install BSC in any one of the following possible positions:
a. Rack on the floor
b. Casing:
i. On the table top.
ii. Mount the casing on the wall and slide the BSC
sub-rack inside.

6. Connect cables from front panel to the DDF for BSC AInterface towards MSC and Ethernet interface towards OMC.
7. It is possible to connect maximum of 40 E1 cables in three
groups. Two groups of 16 each on the EIC card and a group of
8 on the front-top-IO panel.
8. Connect dual power supply to the front panel in BSC rack and
power up BSC.

9. Align the transmission antenna for connectivity towards TDN

node.
10. Connect grounding from BSC rack to the earth plate
11. Check all connections are proper.
Note: When the BSS node is powered up, it is advisable to it
connect to the OMC for testing purpose. For connecting the
OMC to BSC, please refer to OMC Site Installation.

2.4 Precautions to Jack-in/out a Card

You should follow the below precautions when you have to
jack-in or jack-out any card from BSC:

Wear anti-static band.

Hold both top and bottom ejectors firmly.

Stand in line with the frame. If the frame is put downwards, the
person should bend/sit and then jack-out the card instead of
just holding the upper ejector and jack-out/in.

While jacking-in, ensure that the card goes in the top and
bottom rails properly before applying force.

When jacking-in, ensure that the ejector lever is properly locked

and does not open up without disengaging the lock.

For ejecting the card, disengage the lock and wait till blue LED
glows.

Ensure that the ejector switch of the adjacent card is not

disturbed while jacking-out any card.

2.5 Post Installation Checks

Following post-installation checks must be performed after
installing BSC at the site:

VNL 2010-2011, All rights reserved

Commercial in Confidence

Page 13

BSC S

ITE

Check the RJ45 CAT5e cable from power over Ethernet (PoE)
protection between TU card installed in the BSC.

Ensure that the Root RU is mounted on the tower top.

Check that no connection is loose.

Verify loop break and test the E1 towards MSC.

Check for no sparking on power connectors.

Verify that the fans in BSC rack and 19 rack are running with
nominal speed.

Verify that no red LEDs are ON in any of the card in BSC frame.

2.6 Possible Tier-1 Connectivity between BSC and BTS

There are some possible variations while connecting the BSC to
rural base transceiver station (RBTS). All the installation steps are
similar as described above in Steps for Installing BSC and only
major variations are described as follows:

RBTS is co-located to BSC:

o In this case, the 2.4GHz Tier1 wireless link between the
RU and the TDN at the first RBTS site is not wireless while
it is connected using a RF cable and 60 dB RF attenuator
outdoor type in between Root RU and TDN.
o The 2.4 GHz grid antennas on both ends (RU and TDN)
are not required.
o RU is mounted on the tower top near to the TDN so as to
reduce the length of the RF cable.

Remote Root TU:

o Install BSC without TU/RU connections. The TU node,
which is normally placed in the last slot of BSC rack, is
placed outside and remote to the BSC rack. This TU takes
E1 and gives a valid Ethernet traffic to the tower top RU
where the E1 is converted into wireless IP connection.

Page 14

BSC S

ITE

NSTAL LATI ON

o Collocate TU and RU. Connect TU to 48V DC; it has an

internal power supply board.
o Connect RU over Ethernet cable (PoE type). RU derives
power from TU.

Abis over Satellite:

o In this case, Root RU and the TDN are connected over
satellite link with satellite modems of Ethernet back haul.
o Power up the satellite modems separately; they cannot
be supplied through PoE from TU.

BSC and the MSC:

3. Post-Installation Site Audit

One audit is recommended immediately after the installation
and more can be scheduled when a problem is reported or at a
predefined interval of three months.
Following checks are essential for a post-installation site audit:

Stickers for indicating functions are placed on all equipments

such as E1-Ethernet converter and KVM switch.

Tags or markers are intact on all the cables.

If there is some material kept at the site only for testing, mark
the returnable material with stickers properly

Clean the fan tray filters on routine basis and check if they are
operational.

Verify air circulation in room.

E1 cables are bunched and routed through a proper cable

guide.

Cable connected to the Root RU is UV protected RJ45 cable and

is routed through tower member or cable trays.
