35D
Single Duct Units
for Variable Volume Systems

Nominal 200 to 4000 cfm

Features/Benefits
Flexible, high performance
units
The 35D single duct variable air volume (VAV) unit provides cooling
only or cooling with reheat to meet all
your application needs. It is designed
to allow maximum flexibility in configuration and control.
The 35D is offered in 11 sizes covering an air delivery range from 45
to 4000 cfm. The basic unit is a short,
high performance unit with a multiple blade damper that provides
reduced sound levels. Minimal leakage
and effective use of reheat airflow
combine to assure optimum utilization
of supplied airflow. The low height
of the unit ensures an easy fit in all
applications. (Size 18 is 1712 in. high;
all other 35D units are only 1212 in.
high.) The unit casing is 22-gage
galvanized steel, lined with 12-in. fiberglass. Both the casing and the optional foil liner meet the requirements
of UL-181 (Underwriters Laboratories) and NFPA-90A (National Fire
Protection Association).

Superior control offerings

Each 35D unit is supplied with the
new Carrier Linear Averaging Flow
probe as a standard feature. This
probe offers both flow averaging and
flow monitoring capability. When
combined with the flat oval inlets found
on larger 35D units, the flow probe
results in flow sensing capability superior to any competitive unit.
Control options include pressureindependent pneumatic, electronic,
and Carrier variable volume and temperature (VVT) and Product Integrated
Controls (PIC). Both VVT and

Form 35D-1PD

PIC controls are communicating controls; the PIC units provide a control option compatible with the Carrier
Comfort Network (CCN).
Pneumatic control units utilize a
rack and pinion actuator, allowing
simple switch-over from normally
open to normally closed applications.
Electronic control units feature a
new factory-installed enclosure that
provides end access for field connections, simplifying installation and
increasing flexibility.

Designed for easy installation

Units have round inlets through size
10, and flat oval inlets for sizes 12
through 16. Size 18 has a rectangular
inlet. All round and oval inlets have
a raised collar bead to ensure tight
inlet duct connections. Units have a
rectangular slip and drive connection on the discharge for quick installation. Duct dimensions for 35 Series
units (size 16 and smaller) are the
same as for 45 Series fan-powered
boxes, for easy interchangeability.
The units can be specified with electric or hot water heat, foil-faced lining , multiple outlet assembly (octopus),
and sound attenuator.

THE 35D DAMPER

SEAL

FORMED
BLADES

A unique feature of the 35D single duct unit is a specially designed multi-blade damper. The 35D damper utilizes large pivots for low friction adjustment and quiet
modulation of the duct air. Designed to allow tight sealing at shutoff, the damper provides an exceptionally short
airway length while offering excellent airstream control.

PIVOTS

CARRIERS LINEAR AVERAGING FLOW PROBE

Every 35D unit is equipped with a Linear Averaging Flow

Probe which provides an amplified differential pressure
that is proportional to the unit airflow. Output from this
probe is used to provide flow signal to both pneumatic
and electronic controls. Unit airflow (cfm) can be read
directly from the flow probe chart on the unit (also shown
below).

CARRIER LINEAR AVERAGING PROBE CHART

NOTE: The above flow signals (in. wg) should not be confused with the unit minimum inlet static pressures shown on page 33. These flow
signal readings are amplified differential pressure readings from the inlet probe used only for determining airflow (cfm) through the box.

Model number nomenclature

*PIC controls provide electronic control of the 35D unit as part of the Carrier Comfort Network (CCN).
Sizes 12, 14 and 16 have flat oval inlets that accommodate standard flex sizes. Size 18 has a 14-in.
high by 16-in. wide inlet collar.
**Both hot water coil and control hand are determined by looking in direction of airflow.
Electric heat units must have attenuator.
\For special package options, contact Savannah.
Units with electric heat do not require additional control transformers. Transformers are provided as
part of the electric heater.

IV Determine the air outlet arrangements available with selected 35D unit.
Using the table shown on page 13 for the accessory
octopus attenuator, find that seven 8-in. outlets are available for use with size 09. Five 8-in. outlets will be used
to distribute the air to the conditioned space.

Refer to Performance Data (pages 35-39) and Application Data (pages 16 and 17).
VII Locate the boot-diffusers and 35D unit in the
space.
Consider the ceiling system, air supply duct arrangement, and lighting fixture location. Determine minimum and maximum air throw of selected boot-diffuser.
(See Boot-Diffuser Product Data).
With five 8-in. outlet collars: Cfm =

Enter the Boot-Diffuser Optimum Air Throw table with

an AH Type, 2-way, 4-ft boot between 200 to 250
cfm and find:
Minimum Throw from Centerline = 4.0 ft
Maximum Throw from Centerline = 12.5 ft.
Locate boot-diffusers so that distance between room
boundaries and diffusers falls within the minimum/
maximum throw area (within the limitations of the ceiling system).
Flexible duct should be of relatively equal lengths.
Return air and dummy units can be introduced to achieve
desired ceiling effect.
For the selection example, an acceptable layout is
shown.

A. Hot Water Coil
Correct the heating capacity as required for entering water temperature. If unit is operating at conditions other than rating conditions of 180 F entering water temperature (EWT) and 50 F entering
air temperature (EAT), subtract the EAT from the
EWT and enter the Correction Factors table (page
17) at this value. For this example, using EWT of
180 F and EAT of 50 F, enter capacity corrections
table at 130 F to find correction factor of 1.04.
Adjust heating capacity as follows:
Required Heating Capacity
Total Heating Capacity (MBtuh)
=

Enter Hot Water Coil Performance tables for selected unit size and heating mode cfm, and find a
coil that will deliver the required MBtuh for the heating load.
Referring to the table on page 22, find by interpolation that for a 35D size 09 unit operating at 500
heating cfm, a 2-row coil at 1 gpm delivers 26.8
MBtuh.
Obtain coil static pressure drop at full design cfm
from Performance Data and insert in inlet static
pressure calculation (Step XI).

Application data
Several factors should be considered when selecting single
duct units. These include:

Airflow range
Carrier single duct units include a linear averaging flow probe
in the unit inlet to allow pressure-independent control of
airflow on the basis of a control signal. The flow range is
limited by the sensitivity of the controller employed; the inlet duct conditions; and the size of the selected unit.
In most cases, inlet duct minimum airflow of less than
350 fpm should be avoided to prevent erratic control. A
minimum flow less than 350 fpm results in pressure signals
less than 0.01 in. wg, which cannot be resolved reliably by
most control systems.
Maximum inlet flow limits are typically restricted to less
than 2500 fpm by duct pressure loss limitations, although
acoustical limits may also limit selection above this range.
The 35D units will operate well up to 3000 fpm inlet velocity, but with increased pressure drop through the supply
duct and high noise levels.

System pressure
Control of duct pressures is the most effective means of ensuring low noise levels, accurate flow control, and minimum
energy use. The use of various fan tracking techniques can
ensure optimum system efficiency and operation. Response
times of the fan tracking system should be adjustable in order to prevent system oscillations between the pressure
independent controllers and the fan system.
Minimum inlet static pressure shown in the Box Flow Data
table on page 33 is the pressure required by a given size
box at a specified airflow with the unit damper wide open.
This pressure was measured by tests conducted in accordance with ARI (Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
Institute) Standard 880-89, using 3 ft of discharge duct of
the same size as the unit plenum. The pressure shown is
for the unit only or for unit plus hot water coil or electric
heat coil. To determine the total static pressure loss in the
distribution system, the minimum inlet static pressure must
be added to the duct pressure drop (both upstream and downstream of the 35D unit) and the outlet pressure drop.

Acoustics
The primary determinant in the acoustics of a terminal is
the inlet, or duct, static pressure. While velocity (flow rate)
is also a factor, significant reductions in sound can be realized by reducing duct pressures in the branch duct supplying the unit.
Lined duct downstream of the unit is very effective in
reducing discharge noise levels. Where no duct lining is employed between the unit and the room diffusers, a noisy
system is possible. Reducing inlet pressure drop will help,
provided the techniques used to reduce local duct pressure
levels do not increase noise levels in the duct which will be
carried into the space.

16

Radiated sound is seldom a problem with single duct terminals. Flexible duct at the inlet, however, can transmit
airborne sound levels into the plenum space, where they
add to the radiated sound component.
Acoustic performance data Acoustic performance
data shown for 35 Series is based on tests conducted in accordance with ARI Standard 880-89. Data is presented as
sound power for the units indicated. When the attenuator,
octopus, or electric reheat version is ordered, a long unit
will be shipped. The added length of this unit reduces sound
power in a similar manner as the equivalent amount of lined
duct. If the attenuator option is used, additional attenuation
is achieved equivalent to 3 ft of lined duct, producing an
effective 3 NC (Noise Criteria) reduction in room sound levels in most cases.
Application sound levels are provided as NC levels. These
are determined by applying factors provided in ARI
Standard 885-90, as indicated below. Lined duct, ceiling
effect, and room attenuation are typical for many office
spaces. These assumptions, for discharge (airborne) sound,
also include a typical end reflection effect. Alternate effects
can be examined by using the Carrier Air Terminals program (available from Carrier ATF, Savannah) or ARI
Standard 885-90.
The use of multiple outlet plenum will result in reduced
sound levels due to power division. The supplied application data assumes that the sound power levels are split
based on a fixed cfm maximum per split, as indicated. This
assumes, however, that split flows are not directed to the
same conditioned space. When two split flows are supplied
to the same space, the effect of power splits is often negated, depending on the location of the supply outlets and
the observer.
The addition of electric or hot water heat has little effect
on sound power levels, either discharge or radiated. There
is, however, an effect on the pressure assumptions. Sound
data presented for the units is based on unit pressure drop
vs sound generated. If there is little downstream pressure
(0.3 in. wg or less), the inlet static pressure (duct pressure)
is used to enter the sound level tables; if, however, there is
significant discharge pressure drop, then the pressure drop
across the unit is less than the inlet duct pressure and should
be accounted for when determining discharge sound. For
example, if a 35D size 10 unit with a 4-row coil is selected
at 975 cfm, the unit pressure drop (from the Box Flow Data
table) is 0.63 in. wg. If the duct pressure is 1.5 in. wg, then
the sound is a function of only 0.87 in. wg pressure drop
(1.5 0.63). For radiated sound, use the 1.5 in. wg inlet
pressure (the coil is downstream and not included in
radiated analysis).

If both the diffuser and the terminal are selected at the

same delivered sound power level, the discharge (airborne)
sound levels should be combined, by octave band, with the
sound power generated by the selected diffuser when predicting sound levels in the space. In many cases, diffusers
generate higher frequency sound than the terminal, and the
two power levels combine without raising the room NC level.
Each application of unit and diffuser must be examined individually to verify that the net NC does not increase. (Equal
sound power levels, when added, increase the sound level
by 3 db.)
The application data assumes no significant inlet duct
breakout. If considerable flexible duct is used at the inlet,
sound power levels will be higher. Refer to ARI Standard
885-90 for guidance on this effect. A special table is also
provided in the Carrier Air Terminals program.

FACTOR
*To determine corrected performance, multiply the standard capacity rating (MBtuh) by the correction factor. For example, for a 35D size 10
unit with a 2-row coil operating at 100 cfm, the standard rating is 42.7
MBtuh. If the unit is running at 75 F primary air and a 125 F water temperature, subtract the EAT from the EWT:
125 F 75 F = 50 F.
Enter the Correction Factors table at 50 F and find a correction factor
of 0.39. Multiply the standard rating of 42.7 MBtuh for this unit by the
correction factor:
42.7 MBtuh = 42,700 Btuh
Corrected capacity = (0.39) (42,700) = 16,653 Btuh.
The corrected LAT (leaving air temperature) and LWT (leaving water
temperature) can be calculated from the following relationships:
LWT = EWT

Capacity (Btuh)
Gpm x 500

LAT = EAT +

Capacity (Btuh)
1.08 x cfm

*Minimum airflow for cooling or cooling with hot water heat is the minimum flow rate controllable by the unit
volume controller; shutoff or zero is also acceptable. For Carrier CCN controls, see specific Application Data for
required minimum cfm.
Minimum inlet static pressure is the pressure drop for unit only (with wide open damper) or for unit with hot
water coil or electric heat; for example, a size 10 unit at 975 cfm has a minimum pressure drop of 0.02 in. wg;
with a 3-row coil, the unit and coil pressure drop is 0.48 in. wg. Data is based on tests conducted in accordance
with ARI Standard 880-89.
NOTES:
1. Where electric heat is added to the 35D unit, minimum cfm must be at least 75 cfm per installed kW of power.
Thus, a 4.3 kW heater on a size 10 unit requires a minimum cfm of 4.3 x 75, or 322.5 cfm.
2. Electric heat units equipped with airflow switch require a minimum of 0.05 in. wg static pressure at discharge
end of box.

*Noise criteria
NOTE: The NC values are based on ARI (Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute) Standard 885-90 application assumptions including:
Discharge Sound 5 ft of 1-in. lined duct with the dimensions of the units discharge opening; end reflection
assuming a 10-in. duct diameter termination; 200 cfm power division (200 cfm per diffuser at each occupant
location); and 5 ft of 8-in. diam flexible duct.
Radiated Sound Typical mineral tile ceiling, with light fixtures and return penetrations.
Room Effect A 3000 cu ft room, with the observer 10 ft from the sound source.

NOISE CRITERIA APPLICATION DATA

(References are to ARI Standard 885-90)

1. Plenum/ceiling cavity effect based on Type 2 Mineral Fiber Tile
(Ref: Table B-12).
2. Space (room) effect calculated on use of 3000 cu ft room and
10 ft between terminal and individual.
3. Duct attenuation and branch power division estimated from 5 ft
long lined discharge duct, of A and B cross section, where A and
B are width and height of discharge of unit (Ref: Table B-7) and
from 300 cfm/outlet (Ref: Table B-1).
4. End reflection based on 12-in. mean duct width (Ref: Table
B-11).

5. Environmental factor included in calulation (Ref: Appendix A).

6. Attenuation from 5 ft of 8-in. diam flex duct is included. Regeneration at outlet is not included.
These assumptions result in a room effect as follows:

Controls
The 35D single duct unit is offered with a wide variety of
factory-mounted controls which regulate the volume of air
delivery from the unit and respond to cooling and heating
load requirements of the conditioned space. Stand-alone
controls will fulfill the thermal requirements of a given control space. These devices are available in both pneumatic
and electronic arrangements.
Carrier VVT and PIC are communicating controls which
are integrated with the building system. The PIC controls
are compatible with the CCN.
