William James
El filsofo norteamericano Paul Croce sostuvo que en el ocaso del siglo diecinueve se
produce the erosion of certainty. Por qu, es la inevitable pregunta, las certezas que
unificaban la identidad occidental desaparecan o agonizaban? Filsofos e intelectuales, en
las costas americanas y europeas del Atlntico, coinciden en el diagnstico implacable: el
cristianismo, en sus variantes luterana o catlica, calvinista o anabaptista radical, haba
perdido su hegemona cultural en una muerte lenta pero que pareca inexorable.
Siglos de crisis, guerras de la religin y revoluciones haban empezado a transformar, o
socavar, los fundamentos de la identidad occidental. Lutero, Lessing, Voltaire,
Roberspierre, Kant y Hegel son solo algunos de los que, intencional o involuntariamente,
devinieron en victimarios del paciente que se resista a morir. En otros trminos: la
Reforma, las Guerras de la Religin, la Ilustracin y la Revolucin Francesa, entre otros,
aparecen como eventos centrales en el proceso de continua prdida de primaca cultural del
cristianismo.
A diferencia de sus predecesores, relevantes filsofos e intelectuales del siglo diecinueve
comprendieron, y algunos enfatizaron, la radicalidad que sus palabras acarreaban. Sin
embargo, sin un sucesor claro de Roma (y/o Wittenberg y Ginebra), la hoz de Marx, la
desesperacin de Kirkegaard, el pantesmo de Feuerbach, por ejemplo, parecan plidos
imaginarios de lo que alguna vez fue la cruz que aglutin a millones de hombres y mujeres
en un magma similar de creencias. Nietzsche y Durkheim, entre otros, perspicazmente
observaron que un inquebrantable nihilismo roa, sin reemplazarlas, las dbiles races de
Europa. Nihilismo y muerte de Dios parecan ser, entonces, los nuevos y definitivos
trminos para definir la identidad europea.
En ese mundo convulsionado de las postrimeras del siglo diecinueve escribe su obra
William James. Dos aspectos de la misma son relevantes para nosotros: en primer lugar, los
escritos de James hasta la publicacin de las Variedades, donde las cuestiones vitales
entenderse como constituyentes del par conceptual strenuous mood strenuous life)
La segunda, en tanto, mostrar como la filosofa de James recepta variados ncleos
temticos de races protestantes, que permiten hacer inteligible tanto los momentos
de crisis y desmesura del propio James, por un lado, como los modos particulares en
que concibe el mundo y la vida.

Licenciado en filosofa por la UNC. Investigador del CIFFyH. Integrante del grupo de investigacin
sobre LAS FUENTES MODERNAS Y DECIMONNICAS DE LA FILOSOFA DE
NIETZSCHE DE LOS AOS OCHENTA. Se ha desempeado como investigador en la
indagacin de las fuentes filosfico-religiosas (mstica renana, textos religiosos de la antigua
India, etc.) presentes en la filosofa de Arthur Schopenhauer. Se dedic tambin a la relacin entre
Schopenhauer y el telogo Albert Schweitzer. Actualmente indaga sobre las concepciones
religiosas de la psicologa y la filosofa de William James en el marco de su proyecto de doctorado
(UNC) Co-Director: Claudio Viale. Profesor Adjunto a cargo de las ctedras Hermenutica y
Exegesis y tica en la UNLaR. Realiz una estancia en investigacin UCD Dubln donde colabor
con el Dr. Sarn Marchetti. Profesor invitado regular en la UNC. Se present en congresos
nacionales e internacionales y ha escrito varios artculos y realizado varias traducciones (ingls).
