were handled inappropriately (i.e., the shaking of
soiled linen).

Heavily contaminated textiles with potentially
infective body substances can contain
bacterial loads of 106108 CFU/100 cm2 of
fabric.
Bacteria e.g. Salmonella
Viruses e.g hepatitis B virus
Fungi e.g. Microsporum canis
Ectoparasites e.g. scabies

Background
Control measures should be implemented to
minimize the contribution of contaminated
laundry to the incidence of
health-careassociated infections

Purpose Of The Document


The guidelines aim to provide laundry
operators in hospitals and other healthcarerelated facilities as well as their clients, with a
reference for the standard practice in linen
and laundry services.

Specific Objectives
guide managers in the basic operation of a laundry facility
based in or servicing healthcare facilities ensuring the
provision of hygienic linen and apparel to their clients
serve as a guide in the design or building layout of laundry
facilities
offer recommendations in the management of staff
involved in linen and laundry services
provide a reference in the formulation of infection control
policies pertaining to linen and laundry services
