CASE STUDY

You are incharge of a major chemical plant manufacturing paints. At present the general

compliance record is maintained, it is not disclosed to all employees, and nobody talks about it.

Recently, there was a seminar in the company. Many experts from Industry associations like
Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) conducted the seminar. The dangers of non compliance,
ISO 14001 EMS certification, and Trade sanctions that are likely to increase were discussed.
Even the senior level managers were involved and a lot of serious discussions took place.

After a span of one month, you received a call from the senior manager. The top management
wants you to find out more about the ISO certification. As a first step, the management wants
you with the help of other employees to list the critical aspects that have potential environmental
impact.

You feel that you have some vague ideas about air pollution in paint industry and water pollution
due to paint manufacture. You also recall the newspaper item on internationalization of paint
manufacturing practices.

Questions:
1. What are the activities that are critical to the company’s environmental management
certification?
2. List the activities that have potential environmental impact in a paint industry.
3. List the legal requirements and discuss.
4. Is there a trade related issue involved?
