Master Exercise 1
Hairdryer, surface approach
2 hrs.

In this exercise you will learn how to design a new model of

hairdryer from scratch, straight from the design idea you
have in mind.
You will use a surface based approach.

Design Intent: Hairdryer

Create high quality surfaces
Ensure good connections between surfaces
Ensure symmetry of the model
Create a nice design

1.Create the body of the Hairdryer

3. Blend body and handle

4. Global modification,
Create offset and
symmetric surfaces

Master Exercise 1
Hairdryer (Step 1): Create the body of the hairdryer
30 min.

The body is created with from a simple basic surface, the shape is given by moving the
control points.

Do It Yourself (1/3)

Create the basic rectangular surface with the desired dimensions (about 250
x 130 mm, for instance)
Planar patch

Do It Yourself (2/3)

Modify the shape of the basic surface in a top view (XY plane)
Control points

Modify the shape of the basic surface in the Z direction, change the order to
increase the flexibility

Master Exercise 1
Hairdryer (Step 2): Create the handle of the hairdryer
30 min.

The handle is created with a similar approach. But it has to be created in several steps
because of the grip shape.

Master Exercise 1
Hairdryer (Step 3): Blend the body and the handle
30 min.

Once the limit curve of the blend surface on the body has to be designed, the blend
can be done in a surface based approach using the blend function but could also be
done in a curve based approach using the FreeStyle Sweeps or Nets.

Master Exercise 1
Hairdryer (Step 4): Global modification, offset, symmetry
30 min.

Some global operations can now be applied to the model such as a global shape
modification, the creation of the inner skin and the creation of the symmetric part.
Shape quality analysis is also an important issue in style design.

Master Exercise 2
Hairdryer, curve approach
3 hrs.

In this exercise you will redesign the same hairdryer using a

curve based approach: surfaces are created from curves
and can be modified by modifying the input curves thanks
to associativity.

23

Design Intent: Hairdryer

Create high quality surfaces
Ensure good connections between surfaces
Ensure symmetry of the model
Create a nice design
Keep associativity between starting curves and created surfaces

Master Exercise 2
Hairdryer (Step 1): Create the body of the hairdryer

time by modifying the curves.

same X plane (same value for the X coordinate, for example 75 and + 75)
