Minimum Cold & Hot utilities requirement
Draw the Heat Exchanger Network (Grid representation) with all details
Based on the given data, find out annual cost of hot and cold Utility.

Cooling water: T 5 = 30 C, Tt = 40 C, and Cost= 0.0075 Rs. I kg

Steam (saturated): T = 258 C, Latent Heat= 1,676 kJ/kg and Cost= 0.03 Rs./ kg
Equipment operability = 8,000 hr/yr.

a 2 Input X 2 Hidden X 1 Output- node ANN system used to train an XOR truth

table. Show one set of calculations. Use sigmoidal function as the activation function
in the nodes of Hidden and Output layer. What are the tuning parameters for an
ANN?

3 (b) A publisher has orders for 600 copies of a certain text from Delhi and 400
copies from Chennai. The company has 700 copies in a warehouse in Mumbai
and 800 copies in a warehouse in Kolkata. lt costs Rs 50 to ship a text from
Mumbai to Delhi, but it costs Rs 100 to ship it from Mumbai to Chennai. It costs
Rs 150 to ship a text from Kolkata to Delhi, but it costs Rs 40 to ship it from
Kolkata to Chennai. How many copies should the company ship from each
warehQuse to Delhi and Chennai to fill the order at the least shipping cost?

What are the different components of a Fuzzy Logic based controller?

Show with a detail calculations and steps, how the temperature of a jacketed
CSTR can be controlled based on the Feed flow rate and jacket cooling water
temperature. Assume standard triangular membership functions, fuzzy rules .and
use centre of gravity method for getting the crisp output. Show one set of full

(Answer any TWO questions)

1.

(a) Develop an information flow diagram for a binary distillation column. Include the
model for the condenser and reboiler. Show the information flow diagram for the VLE submodel that you will use in the main model. Consider that the constant molal overflow
assumption is valid for this case.
(6)
(b) Modify the ~bove model for the case of three-component distillation. For this case,
constant molar overflow assumption is not valid.
(4)

2. (a) Determine the initial stiffness ratio for the following system of ODE IVP:

=y 2 -

dy,
dt

y 1y 2 + y 1 -8.375x 10-6 y~

~: =-y2- y,y2
with I.C.: y(O) =[4 Lit

(3)

(b)Determine the condition under which successive substitution algorithm for solution of
transcendental equation will converge.
(2)
(c) Under what circumstances Newton-Raphson method will be preferred with respect to
(1)
successive substitution?
(d) Show that the approximate number of multiplications and divisions needed for solving
N linear equations using Gaussian elimination is of the order of N 3
(4)

3 (a) A liquid at a flow rate off lit/min and at a temperature T;n and pressure P;n is passing
through a restriction. The liquid is released to a flash drum beyond the restriction which is
at atmospheric pressure. Develop a model for this case which relates the inlet temperature,
pressure and flow rate with the exit liquid and vapor compositions. The liquid phase
shows non-ideal behavior whereas the behavior of the vapor phase can be well
approximated by ideal gas behavior.
(7)
(b) Which method will you use for solution of a set of ODE- IVP? Discuss the advantage of
your method in compared to other possible methods.
