UNA INICIATIVA
COMPROMETIDA
CON LA
ARQUITECTURA
SOSTENIBLE
finalidad formativa, cientfica y divulgativa.

aislamiento trmico y acstico y altamente sostenibles.

PVT contribuye generando electricidad as como agua caliente.

SDE2012,
A INITIATIVE
COMMITTED TO
SUSTAINABLE
ARCHITECTURE
Building a house powered by solar energy alone is now a real option available to everyone, as
demonstrated by the houses built by universities
taking part in the second edition of the Solar
Decathlon Europe (SDE) 2012. This competition
between solar houses arose with the aim of promoting sustainable development in architecture
through research and innovation, and raising
public awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and fostering sustainability in
construction work.
From the 14th to 30th September, 19 teams from 12 countries (Germany, Brazil, China, Denmark, Egypt, Spain, France, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Portugal and Romania), will build 19
energy efficient houses in the Villa Solar, at the Puerta del Angel site within Madrids Casa de Campo, which will mark the
culmination of a project begun in their respective academic
centres in 2011. For 15 days, each house will have to undergo 10 contests with scoring. The one which consumes the
least natural resources and produces the minimum waste in
its lifetime will be the winner of the competition.
This second edition of Solar Decathlon Europe is organized
by the Ministry of Public Works, Madrids City Council and
the Polytechnic University of Madrid, through its Higher Technical School of Architecture, and its principal sponsors are
Schneider Electric and Kmmerling.
The Villa Solar will be open free-of-charge until the 30th September. Members of the public will be able to visit the 19
competition houses on the inside and see all the technological and design details by taking the explanatory guided tour
provided in each of them. This is without any doubt a unique
opportunity to acquire first-hand knowledge of innovations in
the field of sustainable construction and discover for yourself
that living in a solar house is not just a utopian idea
OBJECTIVES
Organizing Solar Decathlon Europe has a threefold purpose: zining, scientific and disseminative. Thus, while the
decathletes learn to work in multi-disciplinary teams, facing
the challenges posed by the future and working out innovative solutions, members of the public visiting the Villa Solar
can witness and become aware of the real possibilities of
combining a reduction in environmental impact with maintaining comfort and quality of design in their homes. In the
same way, professionals have access to techniques and
procedures which they can study and apply.
For their part, the volunteers indispensable to the staging
and success of Solar Decathlon Europe, have a chance to
share their experiences with the rest of the participating
team-members and to mature professionally, thanks to their
work during the competition.
Finally, the universities, businesses and public institutions
have access to a new means of collaboration, such as
trying out scientific projects in real conditions, which can
later turn into market solutions or be used to improve and
make creative applications to existing products.
A GLOBAL INITIATIVE
Solar Decathlon Europe take its origins from the American
edition of the competition. The Department of Energy of the
North American government created the US DOE Solar Decathlon competition in 1999, and its first edition was held on
the National Mall in Washington DC in 2002.
Participation by the Polytechnic University of Madrid in the
2005 and 2007 American editions, made the competition
known in Spain and led to the agreement between the governments of both countries on the launching of the first
edition outside the USA. This agreement not only confirms
our countrys commitment to the use of sustainable energy,
but also the necessary involvement of our countrys institutions and its citizens in protecting and caring for our planet.
These are all issues where government initiatives for raising
awareness and educating - which is where Solar Decathlon
Europe fits - play a role both essential and indispensable.
In this way, the first edition of Solar Decathlon Europe was
held, with great success, in 2010, also in Madrid, with over
200,000 people visiting the sustainable houses of the participating teams. The current edition is, thus, the second to be
held in Madrid.

THE
DECATHLON
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Contest by jury | 100 points
The cleanest energy is that which is not consumed. For this reason, the competition places special emphasis on teams covering
house-dwellers needs using minimum possible resources. The
jury evaluates concepts such as the buildings thermal envelope,
active and passive systems (such as sunlight, ventilation, etc.) of
thermal conditioning, efficiency of electrical appliances, control
systems, automation, etc.
INNOVATION
Contest by jury | 80 points
Points are gained by teams who have made innovative solutions
in various fields, ranging from architectural ideas to development
of new materials and systems. Jurors from other contests make
separate evaluations of innovative features each in their own
area. The sum of these scores makes up the final score each
team gains in this contest.
SUSTAINABILITY
Contest by jury | 100 points
COMFORT CONDITIONS
Measurement-task completion | 120 points
This contest evaluates each houses capacity to maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, acoustics, air quality
and illumination) suitable for the comfort of its inhabitants. Evaluation is made on the basis of results obtained from sensors installed by the Organization in each of the houses and also from an
acoustics trial.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN
BUILDINGS AND CITIES
The Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), also situated in
the Institutional Dome, is responsible for giving expert and professional information about the full range of key issues which,
like sustainable town planning, bioclimatic architecture, passive systems, efficient installations or energy refurbishment,
contribute to achieving energy efficiency at many levels.
SUSTAINABILITY
The last of the major concepts which make up the Villa Solar is dedicated to Sustainability in its widest sense. This thematic space,
managed jointly by the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the
Ministry of Public Works, and situated in the Institutional Dome,
shows what sustainable development is about and the need for
all of us to be sustainable in a wide range of everyday situations.
ENERGY SAVING
The Institute for Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE),
located in the Insititutional Dome, has designed a markedly informative space aimed at raising awareness about the need to
save on energy consumption and how to achieve this. Among
other exhibits, this space puts special emphasis on measures
included in the 20/20/20 target being set by the European
Union within the framework of its policy on climate change and
the diverse range of energy certification designed to reduce our
energy consumption.

Para Eco-House
china
The Para Eco-House combines both parametric and ecological strategies into the logic of the architectural language used in the house design.
Both Passive and Active energy systems are utilized in this project.
Going beyond the functional and environmental requirements, we create a
paradigm for a low carbon future.
The concept of creating a multi-layer skin emerges from a combination of
Dao theory in eastern philosophy and the theories of Michel Foucault in
western thought, especially the ideas of autonomy in architecture.
Combining the Active and Passive environmental systems into a symbiotic relationship with one another, the two philosophies merge and benefit from the mutual interaction.
By creating physical boundaries from the layering of the program, three
in-between spaces emerge. The first occurrence is defined by the interaction of the external lattice skin and the glazed boundary of the enclosed
house creating a semi-open area used for entrances and outdoor events.
The next boundary encases space which defines the functional needs of
the house.
The void between these private family functions creates an Inner courtyard: a private space in the heart of the home.
20 Ecological Strategies:
Photovoltaic panels, solar collector system, sun tracking solar panels, PVT
system, gray water treatment and ventilation aid, wetland filter system, water south heat pump with heat recovery unit , rain water harvesting , evaporating water cooling, architectural Shading ,innercourtyard ventilation
, vertical green, composite skin system, VIP thermal proof wall, temperature humidity independent control system, bamboo structure, bamboo
furniture, mist propagation systems, smart control , LED lighting system.
For example, motorized axis systems have been developed to position the
solar panels directly in the suns raise throughout the day, making them
25% more efficient.

sumbiosi
france
Sumbiosi is a house that evolves to create the best living environment possible. The house is conceived as one space that you can open, close and
separate according to the seasons, the time of the day or an event. Through
this flexible space, Sumbiosi creates a new way of living in relation to the
environment and nature. With the modularity of the house, Sumbiosi aims to
reduce the urban sprawl, as it offers more functions in a small space.
Research into energy savings was integrated into all the technological innovations. They are articulated around three axes:
Energy is provided by a solar system that makes use of Fresnel lenses,
which concentrate the suns rays by the equivalent of 500 times, so as to
reduce the photovoltaic panels area. A tracking system completes this technology to optimize the efficiency of the system. This enables cogeneration,
with a 3 in 1 system producing electricity, domestic hot water, and a heat
transfer fluid.
The home automation of the house is designed to facilitate the relation between the housing and the inhabitant. It allows creation of an interface between people and technology, so its easy for everybody to use.
Sumbiosi uses passive and semi-passive systems. Placed on the roof, the
Ventec system is used to create a Venturi effect to optimize natural ventilation and to cool down the house during summer nights. Sumbiosi also uses
a cooling system based on phase change materials. This system uses a
natural phenomenon and only needs a fan to function.
To get a sustainable house also for the water cycle in the house, a lombrifiltre recycles the grey water. This installation functions by the work of
earthworms and by sedimentary layers filtering water. The drained off water
from the tank is equivalent to mains water. It is reused for green roof irrigation or the carwash.
More than integrated, all these technologies become part of the architecture
as they are major elements of the house design. Sumbiosi is really a combination between the human being, architecture and technologies.

PREFABRICATION
SML system is a proposal for a house, which has prefabrication and industrialization as its main objectives. To prefabricate means to think of objects
with a certain capacity for material and/or fundamental reproduction, thus
opening the way for generation of base objects or projects, forerunners of
an industrial series. In the case of SMLsystem the object generators of the
industrial series are the container and the wet boxes.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
SMLsystem has been designed to minimize energy consumption; therefore all energy consuming equipment has a high energy efficiency. Besides,
its use has been programmed to optimize its performance.
SOLAR ENERGY
Solar energy is the main energy source of SMLsystem. The house has 21
photovoltaic panels on the roof and two photovoltaic faades facing east
and west. Also DHW is provided by solar energy by means of two thermal
solar panels.
EFICIENT AIR RENEWAL
The SMLsystems ventilation equipment has been designed to renew the
air while maintaining the inside comfort conditions. However, the air exchange may result in having to heat/cool the incoming air to house temperature, which results in an energy cost. Therefore a heat exchanger has
been installed which transfers heat/cold from rejected air to inlet air with
92% efficiency.
SELF-LEARNING
All the appliances of the SMLsystem are linked to a self-learning module
within the CAES (Computer Aided Energy Saving) system. This system
will collect data on usage of the appliances which will be used to improve
their performance. For instance, the system will turn off the bathroom light
if it detects that nobody is at home.
SMART HEATING AND COOLING
The efficiency of a HVAC system varies with outside temperature. In order
to increase its efficiency, a HVAC system with different functioning modes
has been designed, so the one providing greater efficiency can be chosen
each time. It also includes two thermal storage tanks with phase change
material.

The unique design of the Counter Entropy House is based on the idea of
a resource efficient, energy-optimized life cycle of a building in which both
the production of components and their transport and eventual disposal
are considered. Apart from products that are made of recycled material, it
also includes direct or indirect object recycling, achieving an individual
architectural solution, e.g. the facade made of melted CD panels, the floor
of old beams of the Aachener stadium and the furnishing of reused wooden boards collected from bulk rubbish.
Not only the architectural but also the interior design, like the furnishing,
reveals the unique combination of multifunctional and space-saving configurations to create maximum space by optimal use and adaptation to
current situations. By storing the newly developed glass elements in the
Functional blocks, the private zone extends by the widely cantilevering
roof and ensures maximum protected private space through the revolving
curtain.
The outstanding and unique energy systems developed by the team can,
according to the SDE rules, be described passive. Energy is supplied
only by transferring heat-flows in carrier-fluids. No enclosed thermodynamic cycle is needed. The only consumption of electrical energy is caused
by the circulation pumps for the different fluid cycles.
The Counter Entropy Houseis based on the idea of a thermal cooling
system being much more sustainable than climatizing the house with electricity. Thus the abandonment of a mechanical heat pump as the central
element of the building services engineering is the main aim. Therefore a
far-reaching use of solar thermal energy, during night and day, is used to
provide the energy needed for air-conditioning. The solar thermal energy provides significant advantages over the exclusive use of photovoltaic
cells.
The second system, contributing to comfort conditions, is the cooling ceiling fed by a special fluid circle. The following processes run in cooling
mode: rain water from the tanks cools down the dispersion, water blended
with PCM, within the cold-storage tank via a heat exchanger. The dispersion in the cold-storage tank is pumped through the ceiling cooling down
the room temperature by the means of radiation cooling.

The Rome Team is focusing the design of MED in Italy house on five
points, essential for the Mediterranean house of tomorrow.
1 Passive: In a Mediterranean climate, houses made of heavy stone or
masonry walls work well as thermal masses that guarantee winter comfort
and absorb thermal loads in summer. Wood technology in construction is
well received by the market, it is useful for transportation and assembling,
but it has mass values far from traditional masonry. A possible solution to
this issue could be the addition to the wall layers, aside from insulation
panels, of a void to be filled with local heavy infill materials once the house
is assembled and installed on site.
2 Active: The house of tomorrow produces all energy needed for its daily
functioning, and even more. The houses highly integrated design of PV
surfaces could exploit both photovoltaic innovations: energy generation
from diffused radiation and not only direct, and the possibility to have coloured captive surfaces.
3 Fast: The aims of the Mediterranean house of tomorrow are cost reduction, performance optimization and construction time reduction. They
are achieved through a strategy of advanced prefabrication: industrialization of building components in a mass customization perspective; study
of the assembly logic, related with ease of transportation, transfer to factory of construction and testing of plumbing and the majority of HVAC
systems.
4 - Eco-conscious: A careful choice of building materials is the response
to the request of an honest balance with the environment. The most coherent choice, in that sense, is the use of natural materials, coming from
renewable sources, reusable at the end of the building lifecycle and recyclable at the end of the product lifecycle.
5 Dense: The efficiency of a building also passes through its potential
density. It allows less ground consumption, but also less thermal loss and
a reduction of construction cost. It is crucial, then, that the typological and
constructive features of the new houses allow aggregation both horizontally and vertically.

More than a rotating house, cem SDE is a house that moves according
to sun and light variations, not only in order to optimize production of solar
energy (40% more energy production) but also to reduce heat consumption (80% less) and interior lighting requirements (30% less), thus reducing the environmental footprint.
The house is wrapped by a voltaic panels coated skin, which enfolds, protects and feeds the house. The house reacts to sunlight and the solar
panel covering can have two different movements, so it is adapted to
summer and winter needs.
The house feeds itself from the sun following it as it rises and sets by a
movement of approximately 180 from east to west. This sunflower effect,
combined with the movements of the solar panels, maximizes solar gain.
With this system, production of energy will be 2,5 times greater than the
energy consumption needs of the house, taking into account that the house
rotation corresponds only to six lamp bulbs consumption and the cover
rotation consumption is less than that of an iron.
Every moment the movements of the house and its elements create new interior and exterior spaces, adapting the house to ones daily life throughout
the day. The perspective one has changes as the day goes by.
In this project the use of traditional Portuguese materials is reflected in the
use of cork for interior and exterior coating and wood for the structure,
both highly sustainable and good thermal and acoustic insulating materials.
Evolutionary system: the modular structure has been designed to adapt
to its residents needs, evolving according to the family living there. It can
grow and become smaller depending on the lifestyle and the demands of
the family at different stages in their lives.
Its a house that adapts itself to the owner and environment and not the
other way around.

The main strategy of the house is to reduce energy needs, take advantage
of the natural resources of the location and use innovative systems to
create the proper conditions for living.
-Flexibility
To achieve the main strategy, the house has a flexible design which can
be adapted to the requirements of both climate and user. This adaptation
allows proper conditions to be provided inside the house regardless of
whether it is winter or summer.
One of the innovative systems used is the double-layer facade. The interior skins are glazing surfaces and the exterior perforated steel panels.
The different-sized perforations, creating a personalized pattern, help to
control solar incidence in the interior. These layers are movable, so the
house can have different configurations in order to adjust to exterior climate conditions. The house could be even completely opened onto the
terrace, boosting the concept of flexibility.
The design of the structure creates a continuous interior space and the
furniture is not static, so the user can move the furnishing creating different combinations adapted to the requirements of each moment.
-Conscious design
Thus a conscious design is the teams strategy to reduce energy needs,
making a more efficient house in all aspects.
The house is designed to be taken by standard trucks split into two modules, reducing transportations energy costs.
The over-hanging roof on the South facade allows the sun to go inside the
house during winter to warm it up, while in summer it helps keep the house
in shade and reduce the temperature. So, the solar roof, where photovoltaic panels are situated, includes both active electricity production and
passive bioclimatic strategies.
Another innovative system is the exterior floor, Termogenik wood floor. This
system consists in thermally modifying wood, improving its durability and
stability without requiring chemical treatment.
The illumination of the house is obtained thanks to natural light during the
daytime, taking advantage of south and north glazing facades. At night,
highly efficient artificial lighting systems are used, employing LED technology, which generates more light from less energy.

The basic construction is always the same. It consists of columns and
beams which are built as box girder profiles. The constructive material is
wood and the hollow spaces are filled with an insulation of hemp. Therefore the construction provides a high bearing capacity and good insulation
values. Flexible joints enable the extension and deconstruction of the building or parts of it at any time. All columns and beams are identical; thats
why they can be produced in series and with a high level of accuracy. This
also reduces manufacturing costs.
The faades are also produced in series, but several types are available.
For the ECOLAR Home 2012 we decided to use three different faade-elements that have been selected and optimized for the climate conditions of Madrid and their orientation to the sun. The northern and southern
walls are designed as translucent elements. The eastern and western
faades are opaque and comprise a newly developed solar-hybrid-system.
Room-high glass sliding doors grant access to the patios.
The whole roof is covered with innovative solar panels which are available
in an opaque and a semi-transparent design. The latter type is installed
above the patios for natural lighting. The multifunctional panels serve many
different purposes, such as water bearing surface, passive and active heating, cooling and generation of electricity.
Inside the ECOLAR Home, the concept of flexibility and modularity continues with the Super cabinet. Its floor-to-ceiling elements include all the
technical devices, the furniture and even the bathroom. This allows different scenarios of usage every day.
An intelligent home automation system provides maximum comfort while
meeting the highest energy standards.
By using only natural building materials and renewable energy sources,
the ECOLAR Home is highly ecological and sustainable.

Astonyshine aims at the integration of new energetically efficient technologies in the architecture of solar powered houses and at the definition of
new concepts in architectural design based on these technologies, with
the ultimate goal of proposing innovative solutions and increasing the performance of more traditional ones.
Six key issues delineate Astonyshines strategy:
- The use of freestone in building, which, thanks to advanced technologies
and new design methods, shows promise of sustainability and energy efficiency, together with great aesthetic appearance -both classical and new,
low-tech definition, and hygro-thermal advantages.
- The call upon concentrated solar power systems, possibly combining
photovoltaics and thermal, to answer to the houses energetic needs with
higher efficiency and lower prices than standard photovoltaic flat panels,
by proposing new ideas for their morphological and technological integration in architecture and testing recently appeared technologies. Concentrated photovoltaic systems make the use of high performance but costly
cells possible, limiting the cost of the installation; furthermore they optimize the use of raw materials such as polysilicon, reducing shortage risks.
- The control of the photovoltaic field with electronic systems embedded
into each module and suitably controlled to extract the maximum energy.
Such control allows for the reconfiguration of this field---as a consequence of external factors that hinder, at least partly, energy production---to
minimize module mismatch and shadowing losses more efficiently than
standard maximum power point tracking centralized converters.
- The research of new design, materials, and technologies, for the interface between the solar module and the building structure, including temperature control, ventilation, and caulk issues, pre-fabrication problems and
production costs reduction for a significative commercial impact.
- The search for optimal illumination, both natural and artificial, to satisfy
illuminance criteria designed according to functionality and architectural
needs and create spatial effects through lighting design.
- The integration of architectural and structural design with project logistics, intended to reduce the overall cost of the product and increase its
quality and sustainability.

The key features of FOLD have one thing in common: They take energy
efficiency and liveability to quite a new level. They are part of the main
strategy to create the sustainable house of tomorrow today! They are
so integrated in the architectural, structural and energy narrative of FOLD
that they become defining factors. FOLD would not be FOLD without
these features.
The solar cells from RAcell comprise a unique system developed purely
for FOLD. The elegant thinfilm solar cells on the roof cover a hot water
system placed underneath the solar cells. This PVT system contributes to
the house with electricity as well as hot water. And the thickness? Only
86 mm.
The slender design of the walls and the roof is crucial to the architectural
concept of FOLD. This is only made possible by a special combination of
very strong Finnish Kerto wood and Rockwool Aerowolle. The slabs are
constructed as sandwich elements with Kerto wood on both sides and
Rockwool between the wooden slabs. On both sides of the slabs a layer
of high-insulating Rockwool Aerowolle is mounted. This construction prevents thermal bridges, thus minimizing the thickness of the slabs to create
the slender FOLD.
The structural spine of FOLD is what we call thesuperfurniture: The technical core. The technical core is also built from Kerto wood, and it is the
only supporting member inside the house. The technical core is equiped
with all essential features of the house. Bathroom, toilet, technical room
and kitchen. It is thebrain of the house so to say and it fits into one
single standard container, enabling pre-fabrication to keep the cost down.
The heating and cooling system of the house is also a unique solution developed specifically for FOLD. Traditional floor heating panels are placed
on both floor and ceiling surfaces. The PVT system on the roof supplies
the floor heating with hot water, while a callibrated control system and the
high-performance Nilan unit converts the heat from the PVTs into energy
to drive the cooling system placed in the ceiling.

The aim of the project is to develop a new industrialized system through a light and sustainable construction, producing a competitive system,
focusing specially on its effects on energy saving and greenhouse gas
emissions.
Innovative technical solutions were chosen, bearing in mind principles
such as: an industrialized and versatile system, high quality, efficient construction, , customization, improving sustainability, bioclimatic architecture
and optimization of thermal and photovoltaic solar energy, among others.
The SD10 building is a basic unit prototype, but in reality it was designed
to be used in a cluster, forming a housing block, being much more sustainable in that form than as an individual entity.
The orientation was chosen to optimize the potential of the location. Where the occupants spend most time is south-facing. The north-facing section includes the installations-room and entrance, creating a thermal buffer.
The installations-room connects directly with the bathroom and kitchen
through the ceiling. Kitchens are west and east-facing.
Apart from energy efficient materials, aiming at reaching a sustainable architecture, the use of natural materials like wood and cork was incorporated, serving as structure, insulation and finish. Using these materials in
interior finishes produces warm and cosy areas for the user.
Natural elements are integrated into the architecture, in places like the
facade or in the buildings roof, which apart from performing various functions, are well adapted to Madrids dry climate, as they provide humidity
for the atmosphere.
The construction system is made up of 3D and 2D elements, with the
aim of reducing transportation costs, impeding transportation of empty
modules. As a result of this decision, the installations-room, bathroom and
kitchen are all 3D modules and the sitting room 2D modules.
This house was already assembled in Solar Decathlon 2010, and it was a
very positive experience. Assembly time was 6 hours, and the finishings,
furniture and illumination were completed in 2 days.

Up until now, construction work has developed without thought to its environmental impact, its consumption of resources and waste emissions produced.
It is, however, precisely the awareness of this environmental problem which
necessarily leads us to invent new models and techniques of sustainable construction.
FabriQ-21, a new way of building in modules, both sustainable and industrialized, is the fruit of collaboration between Q-21 architecture and HSM Home
Systems Modules. These are light and flexible houses, which can be assembled
and disassembled, transported, modified and easily expanded, according to
changing needs. The FABRIQ-21 prototype is a minimum-sized 32 m2 dwelling, forerunner of a whole series of houses, which allows the end product to
be easily personalized, by making small changes in size and distribution, height
and materials used.
