Friday, May 7th.
Four years
ago, Amanda was
diagnosed with
Familial Amyloi-
dosis, a rare in-
herited form of a
disease that oc-
curs when sub- File photo
stances called amyloid proteins build up in a persons
liver. A number of members of her family, including
her mother Michelle, grandfather Tom Smith, uncle
David and others have been affected by this disease.
Her grandfather, a great uncle and uncle passed away
from complications caused by the amyloids. Her
mother was the first member of the family to undergo
a transplant to cure the disease. Michelle underwent
a successful double transplant – liver and kidneys -
seven years ago.
Following her diagnosis, specialists determined
Amanda was eligible for a liver transplant and her
