INTRODUCTORY BIOLOGY PROGRAM OFFICE: Room 104 LSB, Phone: 578-8239
Biological Sciences 1001 is a General Education Course. Students successfully completing
this course should be able to demonstrate knowledge of a broad survey in the discipline,
including the underlying principles that govern the natural world. Students should also be able
to demonstrate the ability to use inductive and deductive reasoning to understand scientific
phenomena.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Louisiana State University adopted the commitment to community,
which charges students to maintain high standards of academic and personal integrity. All
students are expected to read and be familiar with the LSU code of student conduct and
commitment to community, found online at www.lsu.edu/saa.
EXAMINATIONS: There will be 4 exams (400 points total). The exams will be 40 multiple
choice questions each (2.5 points per question). Three of the exams will be given during
the semester. The fourth exam will be given during Final Exam Week. There is no
cumulative final exam. These 4 exams will account for 90% of your grade. The in-class
quizzes will account for the last 10%.

>Photo ID.'s are REQUIRED for all exams<

All of the exams (including the final) for this class are in class. EXAM DATES ARE
LISTED AT THE END OF THIS SYLLABUS.
Quizzes: There will be 7 quizzes given throughout the semester. I will keep your 5 highest
grades. These will be given in class, and will consist of one question that you will be asked to
answer on your index cards. The question will be very easy, and will simply be used to help

your average in the class, as well as to determine what topics I need to spend more time on. If
you turn in your quiz on the appropriate index card with your signature and an answer, you
WILL get FULL credit for the quiz. If you are not in class when a quiz is given, then you will not
receive credit for that quiz If you enter the classroom late and miss more than 20 minutes of
lecture, you will NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE A QUIZ. I WILL NOT ALLOW MAKEUP
QUIZZES. If you miss a quiz, for any reason, then you will not receive credit for that quiz. As
long as you take 5 of the 7 quizzes, you will get full credit, as I will keep your 5 highest quiz
grades. Quizzes will be given at random times throughout the semester, so lecture attendance
is mandatory.
TOTAL COURSE ASSESSMENTS:
4 exams worth 100 points apiece, that account for 90% of the final grade.
5 quizzes worth 100 points apiece, that account for 10% of the final grade. This means that
each individual quiz grade is roughly equal to 2 percentage points. So DONT MISS CLASS.
GRADES: All exam scores will be included in the calculation of your final grade. No exam
scores will be "dropped". In class quizzes will be given during the semester, and will be
included in the calculation of grades.
Final grades will be assigned as follows:
90-100% - A;

80-89% - B;

70-79% - C;

60-69% - D;

< 60% - F

POSTING OF GRADES: The grades for exams will be posted on the Internet via the Moodle
course management system. There is a link for the Moodle pages on your PAWS desktop.
MISSED EXAMS: Please do not miss a test. If you know before an exam that you absolutely
cannot avoid missing that exam, then you must let me know WELL IN ADVANCE OF the
exam. You have 24 hours from the time the exam was given to NOTIFY me of your
absence if you want to take a makeup exam. If your excuse for missing an exam is
recognized by the university as a legitimately excused absence, then you will be allowed to
take a make-up. If your excuse is not recognized by the university, then you will not be allowed
to make up the exam. If you miss an exam without a valid excuse, you will receive a zero for
that exam. The make-up exam must be taken within one week of the exam missed.
DROP DEADLINES: Through August 29thof 2011, this course may be dropped without
receiving a grade of "W". After August 29 thand through November 4th, 2011, this course may
be dropped, but you will receive a grade of "W". After November 4 th, 2011 no classes may be
dropped.
CLASS BEHAVIOR: Since all students are entitled to an environment that is conducive to
learning, you are expected to keep disruptions to a minimum. This means: be in class and
prepared to begin on time. If you come in late, do so as quietly as possible. All electronic
devices (including cell phones) must be turned off when you enter the classroom.
Disruption of class, whether by latecomers, noisy devices, or inconsiderate behavior (talking),
WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. I am VERY serious about this. Repeated violations by individuals
may result in penalties including being dropped from the class.
BIOLOGY ONLINE: All relevant materials (lecture notes, syllabus, exam grades, etc.) will be

available online and will be linked through the Moodle site for this course.
MASTERING BIOLOGY: In your moodle folder, there is a document giving you step-by-step
instructions for how to register at this online study site. Students are REQUIRED to register for
this site and are encouraged to visit this site and complete assignments to aid in preparation
for exams.
PROBLEMS: If you find yourself having problems with this course, come see me EARLY in
the semester. Don't wait until you're past the point of help (the day before an exam). In
addition, the Learning Assistance Center in the basement of Coates Hall (room B-31) can
offer excellent programs on learning/improving study techniques, test taking, etc. They are
there to help you make better grades.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: If you have a disability that may have some impact on your
work in this class and for which you may require accommodations, please see me as soon as
possible so that we may make the appropriate arrangements.
ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT: I will not tolerate academic misconduct in this course. If you are
suspected of cheating on any assignment, or are in violation of LSUs policies on academic
misconduct, then you will be reported to the office of student advocacy and accountability.
Please dont let me suspect that you are guilty of cheating in my class.
