Watchkeeping program:
One engineer is on duty for 24 h,rotated every third day between
2/E,3/E and 4/E.Change of duty happens in the mornin at
0800.Sunday is off unless you are on duty or something special
occurs. The duty engineer is responsible for writing the logbook
daily at 1000.Apart from that, you also have o fill out the logbook
at certain points during manoeuvring, ussualy at last line,at start
of sea passage,at end of sea passage and al all fast.Sometimes
the C/E may decide that he wants the figures taken at alternative
times due to special circumstances.
Normal working hours are from 0800 to 1700,the official break
time are 1000-1015,1200-1230 and 1500-1515.
The duty engineer makes a round of the engine room in the
morning after 0800 and again in the evening before 1700.The
night round is carried out at 2200.You have to call the bridge

when you get to the ECR and again when you leave the engine
room.Additionally, you have to write the time for entry and exit in
the engine log book. The same procedure applies when you get an
alarm during the night.Whenever you are in the engine room
outside of the normal working hours, you must also remember to
take one of the deadman alarm sensors with you.

Main responsabilities:
Purifiers
Sewage Treatment Plant
Boiler and cooling water chemical dosing+tests
Life and rescueboat engines
Stock control for lub. Oil
Stock control for chemicals(including test chemicals)
Internal transfer of bunkers
Assist the C/E during bunkering
Weekly checks
Monthly papers.

Purifiers
After startup of any purifier, remember to always check the sludge
discharge for leaking oil.

Fo Purifier 1
In good condition-this is the purifier that I have been using for fuel

oil most of the time until March.

All parts in the intermediate service kit were change last mounth.
Water block opened for inspection and diapragrams were in bad
condition.I decided to change. Also the flow valves were changed.
I recevied diaphagrams for each purifier and also flow valves. So
you have spares in case something is going wrong.
Fo Purifier 2
In good condition-this purifier now is master because of less
running hours.
All parts in the intermediate service kit were change. All parts in
the major service kit were changed.

Note: The Duplex filters for both FO purifiers will occasionally get
on vacuum very fast. While it is necessary to clean the filters from
time to time,it is sometimes enough to switch the filter over and
back again.

Do purifier
In good condition-used to fill up DO service tk and IG tank from
the DO bunker tanks.
I always left the local filling valves open,so you only have to
operate the valves in the purifier room when deciding which tank
you want to fill up

ME LO Purifier 1
In good condition-we usually let this purifier run when the main

engine is running
Intermediate service was completed last mounth. All parts in the
intermediate service kit were changed.
ME LO purifier 2
Currently not operational.During discharging the 3-way valve is
receiving from EPC a false signal and we loose oil.

AE LO Purifier
In good condition-we usuaslly let this purifier run all the time for
continuously cleaning the oil in the running generator.
Bowl was inspected and cleaned last mounth.
Distributor, paring chamber changed. They were found in bad
condition.
Note: The steam regulanting valve is only working in
manual.Electrician investigated and found that the EPC41 is not
giving the signal.Requested a new one.
Sewage Treatment Plant
During my contract the sewage tank was 2 times fully discharged
because they trought rags and plastic bags.
Blower no.#2 and discharge pump were replaced.
You should check daily for flow through the transparent pipes on
top and for correct air pressure. There is an air hose in the room
that can be used for blowing if the pipes get clogged(happens
from time to time). It is necessary to hose down the coarse screen
in the aeration compartment once a month.Don't forget to
replenish the bacteria after a full desludging, you will need three
bags for that, otherwise two bags per week is enough.Bacteria and

chlorine are kept in the rope store. When galley waste is passed

into STP (instead of directly overboard) the grease trap(behing
ECR) gets clogged very fast and you will have to clean it
regularly. We also had an isssue with the drain pipes coming from
the galley, they were completely clogged with food waste(from the
grinder) and the pipes had to be dismantled for manual cleaning.
Boiler Water Treatment
Boiler water should be tested daily.Boiler samples are taken from
the sample coolers on each boiler.Testing equipment is located in
the small locker hanging above the table in the
workshop.Additional equipment is kept in the locker behind
ECR.Fill out the logsheets in the workshop and dose the chemicals
according to your test results.
Additional boiler chemicals are located in rope store.
I ussualy filled the drums with 50 L water and had the pumps set
to 10%,that way it will last for two days.
Boiler blowdown should be done on a regular basis when ship's
position permits to do so.
Cooling Water Treatment
Coolig water is normally tested once every week. The sample is
taken from the main engine.Testing equipment is locate together
with the boiler test equipment in the workshop.Additional
equipment is kept in the locker behind ECR.
Fill out the logsheet in the workshop and dose Liquidewt
according to your test results. The desired value is 1.8.Liquidewt is
added by pouring in into the funnel on top of the expansion tank.

Life and Rescueboat engines.

Free fall lifeboat engine

Good condition-test run every week. You need to have the boat on
the crane hooks before you can enter it,just inform the duty
officer that you want to check the boat and he will ask the AB to
do it.
Check the level in the fuel tank and for the cooling water. Also
check the oil level for the gearbox and the sump.
Remember to switch the batteries each week.I am starting the
boat after switching batteries then the battery that has been used
for starting is left to charge for the next week.Remember to
switch off the lights, but make sure that the battery charging
switch is switched on before leaving the boat.

Rescue boat engine

Engine must be started every week.Don'T forget to fill up water in
the drum before you start the engine, there is a hose on the port
side of the bridge that can be used for this purpose. Also, after the
boat has been driven in the sea the engine needs to be flushed
with fresh water for about a minute.Check level in fuel tank and
check oil level.Always remember to remove the drum again after
you have finished.
Note: Don't forget to sign weekly safety checks for the rescue
boat and life boat after performing them-there is a folder named
LSA on the bridge which you have to have to fill out.If you have
any doubt you can ask the 8-12 Officer.
Stock control for lubricating oil
Most oil is stored in the steering gear room except for a few
oils(like M/E system LO) which are stored in big tanks in the
engine room.

In ECR there is a map on the shelf containing the lub.oil

chart, there you will be able to see which oil is to be used for what.
Bunker soundings
Sounding tape and oil-tracing paste for the DO tanks is located on
the engine room bottom.Sounding tape for the HFO tanks is
located in workshop.
Bunkering
Before bunkering you must check the High Level alarms of all
bunker tanks. This can only done by removing the transmiter and
activating the floating-switch by hand,so be extra careful that the
tank is not full. The five transmitters for the HFO tanks are all
located on the Upper Platform, three of them are fairly easy to
reach, for the last two you have to climb the ladders and crawl in
through the tunnels on the forward end of the Upper Platform.
Also make sure that the valves for filing are all correctly lined up.
The team for bunkering will usually consist of yourself,C/E and the
motorman. After the barge has arrived you will assist motortman
with connecting the hose to the manifold.During bunkering,C/E
will mostly be in CCR while the motorman will be watching the
manifold. You have to take regular soundings of the tanks being
filled and report back to C/E.Also I recommend that you check the
constant drip samples and make adjustments to the flow if
necessary in order to get a sample that is representative for the
whole duration of the bunker operation.
After bunkering is finished, the sampling bag has to be shaken well
and the oil has to be poured into the sample bottles which you
then hand over to C/E.Make sure that the hose is not
disconnected until you get told to do so by the C/E
Main Engine

When preparing the main engine for departure, you have to open

the main starting air valve and the valve for starting air
distributor. You also have to switch the Top Bracing from "Low" to
"High".No other remarks.
Aux. Engines.
Check the sump levels on every round and keep enough oil in
them.Remember to close the respective filling valve again after
filling-unless the AE LO Purifier is running, then of course you must
always keep the inlet and outlet valves for on generator open.
Boilers
The electrical heater is operational but cannot maintain a good
steam pressure,so we run all the time the OFB while the Main
Engine is not running.
Fresh water generator.
Maintain shell temperature around 46 C.On the suction side there
is a filter, this filter gets dirty quite fast and this has to be cleaned
often.Check the level in the chemical drm on your rounds and
refill as required.
The sterilizer has to be disconnected when not in uese by
switchinf off the breaker.
Inert Gas Generator
Maintenance is ussualy carried out by 2/E.
The duty officer will call the duty engineer for startup then
needed, this is always the case in a discharge port.
Attention: When starting the scrubber pump, always make sure
that the overboard valve is opening.
Bilge system

Remember to always open for the fresh water supply before start
the pump and to close it again after use.

Rescue boat davit

You will notice that there is no oil level visible in the sightglass for
the hydraulic oil receiver. This is intentional because of the
following issue: if the oil level is filled up to the sightglass and the
hydraulic actuator is released, then the oil level in the receiver will
become too high and you will get an overflow.
Weekly checks
Apart from what is mentioned in the PMS,here are some additional
guidelines:
Test rescue boat and lifeboat engine
Water analysis for M/E cooling water
Make water in oil tests:
obtain the oil sample
put 5ml of reagent A in the testing can
put 5ml of oil sample in the testing can
put the magnet in the testing can
close the cap
add 0.75 ml of Reagent B into the testing can through the side
orifice
lock the cap by moving it from O to S
put the can on top of the mixing device
wait at least 12 minutes

record the reading in the WIO logsheet

Move and grease fire dampers
Test emergency generator
Test emergency air compressor
Start the emergency fire pump
Check the bowthruster room
Check lighting in ballast pump room ( you need a work permit to
enter).

Monthky reports
At the end of the month, all paper work has to be filled out. This
includes:
Boiler water test for OFB
Boiler water test for EGB
ME cooling water test
ICCP
Anti fouling
Screwshaft condition monitoring
Water in Oil
Chemical inventory
Test chemical inventory
There is a link on the desktop called "monthly reports" to a folder
where you will find a subfolder called "monthly 2016",where you
have to put the filled papers. You also have to check and update

the L.O stock, the necessary sheet can be found in the subfolder

"Lube oil stock".
Tell C/E when you have finished.3/E will take care of CO2 and
Freon inventory.
