1.Introduction
From the moment I was told to choose a topic for my research
work, various doubts arose; from the continent to the content
going through the decision of which one could I affront and
resolve with guarantee. Once I took a decision, I realized that I
would not be an easy task, and that my decision was threatened
to be prolonged.
It was one weekend about a year ago that, by chance, I went
with my parents to a conference in Tarragona. The seminar was
offered in Holos, a centre dedicated to innovative research of
peoples health at physical, energetic, emotional, mental and
spiritual levels.
Although a priori seemed extremely boring, it ended not only
impressing, but captivating me, in the sense of how far could go
a subjective approach.
That conference was about the life and findings of Masaru
Emoto and various theories that he claimed, and I was introduced
to Masaru Emotos conception of the importance of water in our
lives, and the influence that we have on it. Thanks to Loli, to who
I am very grateful for all the information she gave me afterwards,
I became rapidly interested in this topic and this thirst for
knowledge led me to find out how water, the element that more
space occupies on earth and is so vital for humans and animals,
is a source of information with messages to give us if we are
willing to comprehend and believe
The same evening as I got home, I decided to share all the
mixed feelings I was emanating wih my parent, who not only
found it was a good idea, but encouraged me to find information
before making the final decision too make sure I felt comfortable
with the subject.

The same night, after two long hours and endless web pages, I
decided what would be the theme of my labour, which is none
other than Masaru Emotos approach of water.
Besides, the subject I was going to work with gave me the
possibility to conduct a physical experiment so I could observe
and analyze the results by myself.
Months later, I think I guessed right the choice I made and hope
that after this research, the subject will end up raising certain
passion between you the same way that it did to me.

2. Masaru Emotos Life and work

2.1. Biography
Masaru Emoto was born on the 22nd of July in 1943 in Yokohama,
Japan. He has three children and is married to Kazuko Emoto. He
graduated from Yokohama Municipal University's department of
humanities and sciences with a focus on International Relations,
and later in 1992 received a title as Doctor of alternative
medicine from the Open International University for Alternative
Medicine which is situated in India with minimal academic
requirements. Subsequently he was introduced to the concept of
micro cluster water in the US and Magnetic Resonance Analysis
technology. This university is an unaccredited institute, although
it is now the worlds leading alternative medicine institution with
a membership count of about 70.000 practitioners.
In 1986, Dr. Emoto established the I.H.M. Corporation in Tokyo.
He was then introduced to the concept of micro cluster water and
Magnetic Resonance Analysis technology (the MRA). He is
currently the chief representative of I.H.M.'s HADO Fellowship and
the President of I.H.M., Inc. He is also the President Emeritus of
the

International

Water

for

Life

Foundation,

Non-profit

Organization.
Emoto undertook extensive research of water around the planet
not so much as a scientific researcher but more from the
perspective of an original thinker. At length he realized that it
was in the frozen crystal form that water showed us its true
nature. He continues with this experimentation and has written a
variety of books which most have been in Japanese as well as the
seminal Message from Water.

Emotos hypothesis has evolved over the years of his research.

Initially Dr. Emoto claimed that high-quality water forms beautiful
and intricate crystals, while low-quality water has difficulty
forming crystals. According to Dr. Emoto, an ice crystal of
distilled water exhibits a basic hexagonal structure with no
intricate branching.

2.2. Emotos Books

The True Power of Water (September 20, 2005)
In this book you will learn of the unique
properties of water and its ability to
improve your health and your life. You will
see the effect each of us has on water,
not only the water we drink but also the
water that makes up 70 percent of the
human body and, most importantly, what
happens to that water as we interact with
each other.
It is our individual responsibility to learn all we can about water,
the most precious resource on our planet, and to help shift the
consciousness through our thoughts, through our words and
prayers, and through our commitment to respect each other with
love and gratitude. May our understanding of water help bring
peace to all human kind.
The Hidden Messages in Water
(September 20, 2005)
Using high-speed photography, Dr.
Masaru Emoto discovered that crystals
formed in frozen water reveal changes

when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed toward them.

He found that water from clear springs and water that has been
exposed to loving words shows brilliant, complex, and colorful
snowflake patterns. In contrast, polluted water, or water exposed
to negative thoughts, forms incomplete, asymmetrical patterns
with dull colors. The implications of this research create a new
awareness of how we can positively impact the earth and our
personal health.
The Secret Life of Water (December 27, 2005)
A small adventure beginning with a tiny
little water crystal has spread to people
all over the world, creating a growing
movement. Hearts have been opened,
and love, gratitude, and a hope for
peace have spilled out, opening the way
for a new adventure.
From its arrival on earth to the vast
areas it traverses before emptying into
the sea, water holds all the knowledge
and experience it has acquired. As phenomenal as it may seem,
water carries its whole history, just as we carry ours. It carries
secrets, too.
In The Secret Life of Water, bestselling author Masaru Emoto
guides us along water's remarkable journey through our planet
and continues his work to reveal water's secret life to
humankind. He shows how we can apply its wisdom to our own
lives, and how, by learning to respect and appreciate water, we
can better confront the challenges that face the twenty-first
century -- and rejuvenate the planet.

Water has a memory and carries within it our thoughts and

prayers. As you yourself are water, no matter where you are,
your prayers will be carried to the rest of the world.

The Secret of Water (October 17, 2006)

Dr. Masaru Emoto's stunning watercrystal photographs have enchanted
millions of people in his many books. His
groundbreaking work has shown that
thoughts and words have a direct effect
on water- crystal formation, and since
our bodies are mostly water, our
thoughts and words certainly affect not
only ourselves but the world around us.
In The Secret of Water, Dr. Emoto brings water's message of love,
peace, and hope to the next generation in his first children's
book. Entertaining and educational, this book offers an
understanding of water that will encourage parents and children
alike to value and give thanks to our most precious resource.
In 2003 the United Nations proclaimed the years 2005 to 2015 as
its International Water for Life Decade, which urges citizens of
the world to take individual responsibility to learn all about water.
In a time wrought with environmental catastrophes and natural
disasters, The Secret of Water shows the necessity of protecting
water and offers a message of hope and empowerment. Help us
shift consciousness

Water Crystal Healing (October 17, 2006)

For centuries, people have turned to
classical music for its calming and
relaxing effects. Internationally
acclaimed water researcher Dr. Masaru
Emoto has discovered why certain
music has healing benefits: Music with
the appropriate rhythm, tempo, tone,
and melody can correct distorted
frequencies within our cells, assisting our health and healing.
In this unique collection, Dr. Emoto presents music that he has
found through his research to be beneficial for common physical
and emotional imbalances. Listen to the musical pieces while
enjoying Dr. Emoto's captivating water-crystal photographs.
The possible benefits you may experience include decreased
joint and back pain; improved function of the nervous,
circulatory, lymphatic, and immune systems; and the release of
negative emotions such as anxiety, self-pity, and depression. The
combination of images, words, and music in Water Crystal
Healing concentrates consciousness as never before, providing a
unique experience for healing.
The Miracle of Water (March 20, 2007)
Masaru Emoto has photographed
thousands of water crystals throughout
his years of research, yet few have been
as beautiful and life affirming as those
formed from the words "love and
gratitude." In The Miracle of Water, Dr.

Emoto demonstrates how water's unique role in transporting the

natural vibration of these words can help you welcome change
and live a more positive and happy life. Dr. Emoto also explores
the significance of words and language, their origins, and their
impact on water. He introduces and explains the key concept of
resonance -- the vehicle through which life-force energy is
transmitted. From this knowledge, he draws out lessons that we
can apply to our lives to reap the benefits of positive resonance,
including more harmonious relationships, restored health, and
improved communications. This thoughtful book includes new
and extraordinary water-crystal photographs that provide
convincing reasons for all of us to choose positive words and
strive for perfect resonance for a more healthy, peaceful, and
happy life.

3.2. Scientific Methods Steps

The scientific method relies on 6 steps which are not always the
same,

as there is no one single scientific method. Every

experiment is different and may or may not follow the exact

steps. The basic steps to conduct an experiment are:
1.The first one is the most imporant one, as is the one that raises
the question about something you have observed; how, when,
who, which, why and where. Most of the questions will be
answered by a number, as it will be easier to measure and
compare.

2. Background research is the following step; gather information

and

resources.

3. The construction of the hypothesis: After data has been

collected and analyzed, the scientist formulates a hypothesis. It
has to be constructed in a way that it clearly answers the original
question. Normally hypotheses have the form of a mathematical
model, or are formulated as an existential statement.
4. The next step consists in the performance of the experiment
and collecting data obtained from it. The experiment has already
been designed in step 3, as it has to be done according to the
hypothesis to get the data needed to test whether your
hypothesis is true or false. Its important that your experiment is
a fair test, as changing more that one factor may produce
unexpected results. One factor is altered during the experiment
and all other factors are kept same. The experiment must be
repeated for the same and different set of values to ensure that
the initial results were not a fluke. The experiment that is
performed proves the authenticity of the hypothesis.
5. Analyzing the already collected data and drawing a conclusion
might be confusing, as Scientists often find their hypothesis is
false; this obliges them to construct a new hypothesis and start
again the entire process. If the hypothesis is true, before
publishing the results the Scientist has to test the results in any
possible way so that there is no way that the result has been by
mistake or that in other conditions it would be different.
6. Finally, the scientists publish their final report in a scientific
journal or communicate the results in a meeting so that the rest
of the scientific community can use the results for their own
experiments. Others scientists can make the experiment their

way to improve the data obtained from the other experiments. In

a

field

where

there

is

active

experimentation

and

open

communication among members of the scientific community, the

biases of individuals or groups may cancel out, because
experimental tests are repeated by different scientists who may
have different biases.
An idea, model, or explanation that has been rigorously tested,
analyzed, and accepted by the scientific community is referred to
as a theory - a term used, perhaps, because most scientists
believe nothing can ever be proved absolutely true. The theory
will continue to be an accepted explanation unless new
information

is uncovered - information

that the scientific

community agrees disproves the previous explanation. This

continuous scrutiny is essential to the credibility and progress of
scientific research.
The scientific method attempts to minimize the influence of the
scientist's bias on the outcome of an experiment. That is, when
testing a hypothesis or a theory, the scientist may have a
preference for one outcome or another, and it is important that
this preference not bias the results or their interpretation. The
most fundamental error is to mistake the hypothesis for an
explanation of a phenomenon, without performing experimental
tests. Sometimes "common sense" and "logic" tempt us into
believing that no test is needed. There are numerous examples
of this, dating from the Greek philosophers to the present day.
Another common mistake is to ignore or rule out data which do
not support the hypothesis. Ideally, the experimenter is open to
the possibility that the hypothesis is correct or incorrect.
Sometimes, however, a scientist may have a strong belief that
the hypothesis is true (or false), or feels internal or external

pressure to get a specific result. In that case, there may be a

psychological tendency to find "something wrong", such as
systematic effects, with data which do not support the scientist's
expectations, while data which do agree with those expectations
may not be checked as carefully. The lesson is that all data must
be handled in the same way.

3.3. Characteristics.
The major features of the scientific method are:
Objectivity: The scientific method tries to obtain knowledge
that accord with the reality of the object, which describe or
explain as it is and not as we would wish it to be. It leaves out
the subjective, how it feels or senses.
Rationality: Science uses reason as the essential weapon to
reach its results. Scientists work with concepts, judgments and
reasons, not sensations, images or impressions. The rationality of
science exists aside from religion and all systems where
elements are not rational.
Inventiveness: It is inventive because it requires putting into
play

the

creativity

and

imagination

to

create

problems,

developing hypotheses, resolving and verifying them. This means

that to extend our knowledge is required to discover new
truths. The method provides rules and guidelines, but it is not
infallible.
Systematic: Science is systematic, organized in their searches
and their results. It is concerned with building systems and ideas
coherently organized all knowledge into more extensive partial.
To achieve this consistency in the various sciences we turn to
logical operations to ensure that order or consistency. These

logical operations are: definition, classification and division and

providing guidelines to determine the exact content and extent
of scientific knowledge.
Verifiability:

It

is

the

confirmation

or

rejection

of

the

hypothesis. The hypothesis are verified or rejected by the

experimental method. Hypotheses are proposed or assumed
answers to our problems and these are confirmed or restructured
according to the results presented during the experiment.

4. Emotos Method.
4.1. How did it all begin?
It all started in 1994, when Emoto took samples of water from a
pure water source located in his country, froze a few droplets,
examined them under a dark field electron microscope and
photographed them. Once the photographs were revealed, they
saw a beautiful crystalline hexagon like a snowflake. Emoto
would

then

take

water

from

polluted

river,

froze

it,

photographed a few drops and found that the image that

appeared on them was a cloudy pattern without any recognizable
way, something completely unstructured.
In those early experiments Emoto would claim to have more than
10,000 images of different water samples. Thanks to his photos,
he and many scientists assume the physical evidence of the
power of our thoughts and experience. As an expert in the study
of water, Emoto even stated that "water does not only store
information but also feelings and conscience, reacting to any
message. He adds: "All information that holds the structure
becomes visible when shooting a drop of water in a frozen state.

4.2. Taking photographs from Water

The crystal is a solid substance whose atoms and molecules form
a configured system. Crystals can be found in snow and
crystalline quarts, but are also present in natural minerals such
as

diamonds,

table

salt

and

chemical

seasonings

like

monosodium glutamate.
In particular, as the snow is formed under a variety of conditions,
there are not two crystals that have the same face; this is due to
the fact that as the snowflakes have the same crystal structure,

different types of water on Earth must also have at first the same
crystalline

structure.

Emoto had a theory: When a water molecule crystallizes, pure

water becomes pure crystal, but would contaminated water
crystals be equally beautiful?
Emoto began his experiment, it was necessary to freeze each of
the water samples had been taken. Then, before they melt, the
small and fragile crystals had to be placed on a glass plate
microscope to photograph a super fast speed.
First of all, was to take the entire team about: the amount of
required water samples, Petri dishes in which its material and
size are critical dry ice and a refrigerator. Able to photograph the
crystals is only possible after fulfilling several requirements: the
exact temperature of the freezer, specific exposure times, the
exact temperature of the refrigerator, the enlargement of the
microscopic observation, how to illuminate the object and the
lens opening.
It took him about two months to take one photo that he felt he
was able to use; during all that time, he wasted more that one
thousand

movie

tapes.

However, the moment he took his first successful photograph of

a

water

impressive. After

crystal
the

was
initial

photograph, his experiment gained

speed. That was how he built a
refrigerated room in which he made
fit

small

freezer

and

an

equipment of microscope with a

camera. After organizing a group

for shooting glasses, he and his colleagues took pictures one by

one and stored information.

Water is rapidly changing and

is unstable. Emoto and his
team put the water samples
in

100

Petri

dishes

and

placed them in a freezer for

two

hours. They

took

the

crystals and put them under

the

microscope

to

photograph them, extending

them from 200 to 500 times.
Distilled water selected as the basis for the experiments because
it has a simple crystal structure and fewer impurities.
In order to obtain a copy of an average crystal, they had to
photograph many water samples under as different conditions as
they could imagine. For most people, it is physically impossible to
stay thirty minutes in a refrigerator at 5 degrees below zero
taking photographs.
It is impossible to obtain identical images of the crystals. In other
words, it is impossible to reproduce perfectly the same crystal
twice. However, the crystals can show a trend that can make the
difference called crystal sheet structure. It is possible to identify
the crystals according to this structural trend.
Thanks to the cooperation of several companies and volunteers,
were able to take pictures of spring water, rainwater, river water,
lakes and wetlands around the world and Japan. In 4 years
Emoto and his team have photographed and stored about 10.000
photos.

Looking at the photograph of a crystal, it was of extreme

importance

that

this

had

complete

hexagonal

structure. According to their experience, the rupture or collapse

of the crystal structures were not a good sign, in other words,
you could say that his evaluation criterion was based on whether
the crystals were beautiful or not.
During the photo sessions, the team observed the crystallization
process several thousand times. Once the crystal was formed,
could see that this was becoming a beautiful figure, and that
these

figures

conveyed

message.

The images of crystallized water may be slightly different to the

information they yield the modern scientific analysis of the water
because the method assessments of progress in water samples
from a very different angle.
The images of water crystals that express the condition of water
sample at that time and place. Thus, to carry the analysis to a
more scientific level, Emoto wanted the crystals to be observed
daily, from different places and analyzed by a wider group.

4.3. HADO
All substances are composed of combinations of atoms. Atoms
are composed of electrons and atomic nuclei. Since electrons are
negative and the atomic nuclei is positive, electrons execute an
orbit around the nucleus at an ultra fast light emitting waves of
vibration. Hado is the intrinsic vibrational pattern at the atomic
level in all matter, the smallest unit of energy. Its basis is the
energy of human consciousness.
The electrons electrically repel each other; this makes HADO

move at an intense speed. This move generates a pattern

(magnetic resonance field) of which no two look alike. Magnetic
resonance deals with hydrogen atoms in water and is a
detectable magnetic field. In conventional medicine, this signal
can be manipulated by additional magnetic fields to build up
enough information to construct an image of the body. That is the
basis for MRIs. The same applies regarding magnetic resonance
in the waters of the world, which through the conductivity in it,
allows information to be transmitted.
At the atomic nucleus there is regularity, but in modern science
the elementary particle found in atoms is not regular. The reason
for this is that it changes in accordance with the consciences of
observers in accordance with the way how they see things. The
world of the neutron is at the same level of consciousness than
humans.
HADO is the minimum unit of invisible energy. The sound and
electricity also have HADO.
Twelve years ago, for the first time ever, the U.S. developed the
MRA (Magnetic Resonance Analyzer) which measures various
states of the HADO coding the unique energy pattern of each
substance and verify whether it resonates or not. Finally, the
storage

of

information

and

technology

of

wave

motion

converged, which was the objective Dr. Emoto had been working .

4.4. Water photographs

These photographs were taken between 2004 and 2009 in
Masaru Emotos refrigerated room, which show the crystals
characteristics according to the water sample that was treated in
each case.

4.4.1. Crystals of water from different places

According to the medium where the water samples were
originate, crystals show characteristics that allow to distinguish
them, as environmental conditions such as pollution have a great
effect on water.
4.4.1.1. Glacial Water
Antarctic Ice
The Antarctic ice sheet is one of the two polar ice caps of
the Earth. It covers about 98% of the Antarctic continent and is
the largest single mass of ice on Earth. It covers an area of
almost 14 million square km and contains 30 million cubic km of
ice.

Columbia Glacier, Canada

The Columbia Ice field is an ice field located in the Canadian
Rockies, astride the Continental Divide of North. The ice field lies
partly in the north-western tip of Banff and the southern end
of Jasper National Park. It is about 325 km in area, 100 to 365
meters (328' to 1,197') in depth and receives up to seven meters
(23 ft) of snowfall per year.

4.4.1.2. Spring water

Hogget Diamond Spring Water, Tasmania, Australia

The region of Tasmania is located in the southeast corner of

Australia. The
water is in a rock formation of the Paleozoic Era, where once
prospered and opal diamond for industrial use.

Miracle Spring, Naju, Korea

The master plan of Naju city proposed to develop eco-friendly
nature, and the objective has been reached, as for the
form of the crystal it can be told that the water is pure.

4.4.1.3. Fountains
Fountain in Lourdes, France

It is said that the source of Santa Lourdes is a miraculous spring,

the water has a HADO of love and hate turns into love. The
crystal expresses the collective merits of person that goes to all
corners of the earth to visit.

Trevi fountain, Italy

The fountain was provided with recirculating pumps in 1998; as a
result, the contaminated water does the same route over and
over again, dragging all the particles that pollute water.

4.4.1.4. Underground water

Northern Island, New Zealand

The water from great depths moves largely straight upward into
the hot upper mantle. We are talking about water flowing over 16
miles underground, pure and with high quantity of minerals that
have been absorbed from the rocks.

4.4.1.5. Rivers
Midstream and Downstream of Shinano River, Niigata
Prefecture, Japan
This river supplies water to hydropower, irrigation, industrial
usage and city water plant.

The river environment is rich in

wildlife and plants.

Poly-aromatic

hydrocarbons

may

be

responsible

for

the

mutagenicity of the river water, caused by Niigata Chuetsu

Earthquake.

Upstream of Shinano River, Niigata prefecture, Japan

Right now, the highest mutagenicity can be observed in the
samples collected at the most downstream; it can be seen
through the crystals, that as the river flows towards urban areas
it is gradually being polluted.

Sumida River, Tokyo, Japan

Mutagenicity of samples from all sites of the Sumida River, which
is located 230 km from the river mouth, was also clearly
detected in the presence of S9 mix. These results demonstrated
that the water in the river contained some frameshift mutagens.

4.4.1.6. City water

Bangkok, Thailand
The main source of water pollution in Bangkok is the domestic
sector. Water quality in Bangkok is critical in comparison to the
surface water standards set by the National Environment Board
(NEB)

Buenos Aires, Argentina

When Argentina set the maximum allowable limit for uranium at
100 micrograms per liter of water, it based its decision on the
legislation used in Canada, a country with significant natural
deposits of this heavy metal. Laboratory testing ordered by an
Argentine court concluded that the water consumed by close to a
million people living near a nuclear facility is contaminated with
uranium and not fit for human consumption.

Hiroshima, Japan
Hiroshima City, as an "International City of Peace and Culture"
strives to be a city of water, greenery and culture which
contributes to world peace and continues to develop its urban
infrastructure. The City of Hiroshima also strives to secure a
constant supply of safe and good quality water for its citizens;
this photograph does not fit exactly in the description, but it has
to be taken in account that the deadly destruction caused by the
atomic bombing.

Hong Kong
Water pollution can be invisible to the naked eye, but its impacts
are for the most part clear enough. Bacteria, nutrients and other

pollutants can make swimmers sick, contaminate or kill marine

life, and give off bad smells.

London, UK
Until the 1960s the waters of Londons rivers were as polluted as
its air. Deoxygenated and black with scum, they showed the
effects of sewage pollution and uncontrolled industrial effluents.
Tighter environmental standards, combined with the closure of
factories, produced an improvement in water quality, but this is
not still as pure as it should.

Los Angeles, USA

Most of the water that now enters the Los Angeles River yearround is from the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in the
Sepulveda Basin. Up to 75 million gallons of treated water are
released daily into the river. That water is undrinkable but is

treated well enough so that it presents no health hazards.

However the storm drains along the various cities down river
carry all kinds of contaminates into the river.

Manaus, Brazil
Brazils

major

and

medium

size

metropolitan

areas

face

increasing problems of water pollution. Coastal cities such as Rio

de

Janeiro, So

Paulo and Recife suffer

effects

of

upstream

residential and industrial sewage contaminating Feeder Rivers,

lakes, and the ocean. In 2000, only 35% of collected wastewater
received any treatment.

New York, USA

New York protects their drinking water in huge cedar barrels. The
water comes from a system of 19 reservoirs and three lakes in
upstate New York (some flowing to the city from as far as 125
miles away.) Most of the supply is protected and filtered by the
natural processes of upstate ecosystems. It dissolves natural
minerals while traveling over land or through the ground.

Sidney, Australia
The main cause of beach pollution in Sydney is now storm water,
which

can

carry

pollutants

washed

from

the

catchment

and overflows from the sewerage system. Bypasses from sewage

treatment plants may also affect beach water quality.

Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan

Shinagawa includes natural uplands and lowlands, as well as

reclaimed land. The uplands are the eastern end of the
Musashino hills. They include Shiba Shiroganedai north of the
Meguro River, Megurodai between the Meguro and Tachiai Rivers,
and Ebaradai south of the Tachiai River.

Venice, Italy
In Venice, water is extremely polluted; Canals throughout Venice
serve the purpose of transportation and sewer system. Farming,
manufacturing plants and large ships add to the growing list of
polluters. As a result, it is not surprising that water is dirty and
Venice as a consequence, the crystals formed from water are not
beautiful, transmitting a definitively distorted and randomly
formed crystalline structure.

4.4.2. Comparisons between crystals

These comparisons were made by exposing water droplets equal
to opposing messages, so to see what the reaction that had each

4.4.5. Crystals exposed to Music

The Sun

Dr. Emoto and his team adopted the following procedures: they
placed the distilled water between two speakers and put a
complete piece of music at normal volume. Give it a tap to the
bottom of the bottle with distilled water and let it stand
overnight. The following day, they would tap the bottom of the
bottle again to make crystals separate and the photographed
them.
Resonance is the transference of wave energy between similar
shapes and forms vibrating at the same frequency. Very powerful
energy transfers occur for identical frequencies. The music
played carries its message to the water by adding energy to
selected resonant frequencies.
Mozart, Symphony No.40 in G Minor
This symphony is a song that seems to be moving towards
beauty
A piece of deep thinking, which seems almost an ode to beauty.

Beethoven, Pastorale
This is one of the symphonies, most famous of Beethoven: it is
fresh and joyful. This beautiful crystal confirmed by the fact that
good music affects positively the water.

Bach, Air for the G String

It looks as the crystal was delighted by the sound of music. The
branches of the glass spread freely.

Bach, Goldberg Variations

Bach's Goldberg Variations, which run a vast emotional range,
are one of the great monuments of the repertoire for keyboard
and feelings.

Chopin, Farewell Song

The basic form of the crystal is almost perfectly divided into
small parts that have been "separated" from each other. This was
well received, despite that the magnification of the microscope
was the same for all photos.

HADOs healing music

This is a picture of a crystal that has been exposed to a CD
(made by Alan Roubik) healing music, created in the USA. It is
said that this music uses a special technology in order to relieve
pain and to raise immune defenses. The branch of the crystal
extends becoming an elongated shape.

Heavy metal music

This music is full of anger and seems to blame the world.
Consequently, the basic hexagonal structure and well formed in

this crystal is broken into pieces. The water seems to have

reacted negatively to this kind of music.

4.5 Emotos Criticisms

The first reason why Emoto is criticized is his credentials;
He graduated from an unaccredited institution, which supports
the general though that his work is not credible. He has no
scientific background, and his experiments were not conducted
under the necessary conditions.
Emoto stated, I did not start out with any modern scientific
background. I did not even know the limit of science to stop me
from giving this research a chance. Not having been educated in
the scientific community, Emoto has been happy to do his
research without accurately employing the scientific method.
While he does employ the spirit of the scientific method in his
research design, he makes critical mistakes in its rigor. For
example, Emotos research does employ observation of a
physical phenomenon, formulation of a hypothesis to explain the
phenomenon, and testing and revising the hypothesis, but he

makes the critical mistake of failing to minimize the influence of

the experimenters bias on the outcome of the research.
Also, the photographers knew what they were looking for, and
Emoto said that the creativity of his photographers was valued
more than following the experiment rigorously. , Dr. Emoto
specifically stated, I do not require any blind tests on any
samples, but rather he believes that the researchers aesthetic
sense and character is the most important aspect when taking
crystal photographs. Emotos belief that ice crystal formation is
sensitive to human thought lead him to select technicians who
would not affect crystal formation with negative thoughts over
technicians who had formal research experience.
Emotos procedure, while simple and direct, does not eliminate
numerous possible sources of error. Ice crystal structural
formation is dependent on numerous environmental factors, the
most important of which are temperature and humidity. Factors
like these would have substantial impact on the results of his
study but Emoto did not conduct procedures to control them.
While Emoto minimized some possible sources of error by
conducting his studies in the same room with the same sample
sizes, the same freezer and same microscope each time, other
possible sources of error were not addressed. For example the
Petri dishes were not sealed to prevent contamination or
disturbance by the operator or environment; A simple thing such
as the photographers breath while using the microscope could
affect the warming rate of the frozen sample and temperature of
crystal formation, thus affecting the structure of the resultant
crystal.

The Petri dishes used to contain the water samples were not
sealed. The implication is that the samples used in his
experiments could easily be contaminated by the environment or
even the researcher himself. One good example would be that
the photographers breath could affect the warming rate of the
frozen

samples,

affecting

the

temperature

of

the

crystal

formations. This implies that the beautiful crystals formed

through positive words could have been coincidence.
Emoto indicated that his water samples were frozen at 25C, and
his crystals were formed at -5C. According to the morphology
diagram of ice crystal formation, column crystals should be
formed instead of plate crystals, yet none of Emotos pictures
show a column crystal. Could Emoto have fabricated his findings?
Lets put it this way he has no supportive data to back his
claims.
Lebbrechts morphology diagram illustrates that ice crystal shape
is a factor of both humidity and temperature. Temperature is the
most important factor, and plates tend to form in the 0C to -3C

and -10C to -22C ranges (red), while columns tend to form from
-3C to -10C and below -22C (green). Lower humidity tends to
form simpler crystal shapes, while higher humidity tends to form
more intricate crystals. It is currently not known why ice crystals
form different shapes at different temperatures, as the physics of
how the water molecules bond to a growing ice crystal are very
complex and not well understood.
Emoto has mentioned that in every test he would photograph
100 Petri dish samples, yet only one of each test was provided to
the public. It could have happened that the other 99 go all
against his hypothesis. He has successfully prevented the media
from uncovering the photos which did not support his research.
While Emoto has published his claim in one peer reviewed
journal, it has neither been substantiated nor disproved by
research scientists. It is worth noting that Emotos Journal article
is not a scientific report, but a three page long photo essay. Dr.
Emoto, himself, stated Even though my book, Message from
Water, was first published in 1999 and has been translated in
over 20 languages, I have not heard of anybody else conducting
similar research.
The only published reproduction of Emotos work on record was
conducted by Mr. Damian Nashs AP psychology class at Durango
High

School

in

Colorado.

Despite

numerous

difficulties

reproducing Emotos procedure and controlling the temperature

and sample freezing and melting rates, at least the class
employed a blind experimental design to eliminate the possibility
of experimenters bias when photographing the water samples.
As published on the website of the Institute of Noetic Sciences on
May 25, 2004, Mr. Nash states that the team did not find

sufficient evidence to refute or accept Emotos hypothesis that

thought influences water crystal formation.
Emoto is considered to have a lack of scientific foundation in his
work, which prevents him from attracting interest by widely
accepted and respected scientists. His claims resonate with
alternative therapists, religious leaders, spiritual researchers,
artists, and musicians, and this has made Emotos work take part
of the called pseudoscience, that traditional scientists do not
find as a worthy object of study.

5. My Experiment.
5.1. Process
This is no more than anecdotic, but in order to prove whether
Emoto did his experiments biased or not and if it was true that
the vibrations that water samples received affected the
molecular structure of the water, I did it myself.

Experiment with written words.

This is a photograph in which two glasses have been labelled

with Thank You and love and You Fool and hate. These words
shall emit different kinds of vibration to the water, and that
means that after 12 hours that these two glasses will be in the
freezer, the crystals of this type of water will take different
shapes.
The water samples I have used has gone trough a process in
which a softener removes the lime and other particles that can
be found.

5.2 Result
After 12 hours, these are the frozen water glasses. There is no
big difference between them, but observing carefully, the edges
are slightly different; the glass labelled with Thank You, Love is
clearer than You Fool, Hate, whose edges have cracks.

This is the photograph of the

glass that contained water
labelled with You Fool, Hate.
Its central ice was darker that
in the other glass, and had
cracks all over the ice.

This is the photograph of the

glass that contained water
labelled with Thank you, Love.
The ice was clearer, and the
edges were almost transparent.

6. Emotos Project
6.1. Water, human and the earth
The human being appears physically in the land for the first
time when the ovum of the mother and the sperm of the father
meet and turn into a fertilized ovum. At this moment, the water
takes part of about 95 % of the ovum, that is to say, that this one
is mostly pure water. A mature body has a 70% of water, so its
what we are mostly made of. The earth is called the water planet,
as 70% of its surface its water, just as the human body. Most
part of the earths water like rain, underground currents, lakes
and rivers is in the sea; whats more, theres also water around
us, as clouds or fogs. Snow in the high mountains and Antarctic
ices are water too.
As Emoto deepened his research, he began to doubt about the
immaculacy of the water he was working with, and as a
consequence, what would that mean to the human body. Nobody
apart from an investigation institution of water know the answer;
to our eyes, water looks alike whichever that its composition is.
So Emoto questioned what was the difference in the information
that every kind of water contains? Is there anyway to get to know
that

difference?

As he thought about that, he found a book that proposed 50

questions, and one was Are there any snow crystals with same
shape? The answer was that snow had been falling on earth for
millions of years and that each crystal had a different shape.

6.2. Water and environmental problems

Its impossible to think about the quantity of water that is
constantly

circulating

around

us

without

repairing

in

the

environmental problems such as water contamination, that is

nothing but the absorption and dissolution of all pollutants. Water
is the principal source of life, and if it was polluted, all creatures
life would be denied.

6.3.

Therapeutic

applications

and

healing

properties
Emoto considers water as living being, regardless of whether it
is in the free state in nature or contained in a living organism. "I
think," says Emoto that it can be activated within the human
body of water purification processes of cell in the same way it
can be done with water that is free in nature. In that sense, I
checked-I

have

pictures

to

prove

it -

the

most

powerful

combination of thoughts in terms of processing capacity and

healing are 'love' and 'gratitude'. These words and positive
emotions that generate converted each of the water molecules
that make us a beautiful structure and balanced. Therefore I am
convinced that our prayers, meditations and affirmations can
help heal. "
Emoto discovered many things in the health field which have
created quite a controversy.
For example, he could explain how a person could turn sick if he
or she was constantly bombarded with negative thoughts and
words. So, could negative reviews lead a person to be physically
deconstructed? The answer is no, as the results are not somatic,
as such expressions affect directly to aqueous molecular
structure, and that already means a lot, as 70% of our body is
water.

6.4. Hado medicine

A couple of years ago, Emoto was introduced to a type of

radionics device capable of measuring various vibrations of
the body at the cellular level. Emoto developed an application for
the apparatus so that he could use it beyond its initial intention
to measure Hado. His experience with the Hado device led him to
realise water's ability to receive information. It also led the way
to his study of Hado medicine, an alternative medical practice
that researchers started to study after having felt the limitations
of conventional Western medicine.
Although having a device was helpful in my study of Hado
medicine, I came to believe that humans are capable of feeling
and sending Hado as well as the device can measure it, if not
better. The fundamental principles

of Hado medicine are

vibration and resonance. A body can make a wrong turn when

the cellular vibrations are disturbed for any reason. When this
situation happens, an external vibration may be given to the
disturbed cell so that its vibration is restored.
A Hado is a wave; it has a wave shape of peaks and valleys.
When the shape of a wave opposite to the original one valleys
for peaks, and peaks for valleys is used, the wave can be
straightened. By over laying a wave with another wave in this
manner, its characteristics can be cancelled. Hado medicine
utilizes this concept to restore the patient's health by sending the
Hado that can cancel his unfavourable Hado.
Water is an integral component; to help a person treat himself or
herself with Hado medicine, it has to be examined the
individual's

Hado

using

the

Hado

measuring

device.

After understanding the disturbances to his or her own vibration,

we prepare the water on which the information to correct the
vibration was transferred through the Hado measuring device.

The Hado water created in this manner penetrates into the

molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles that make up the
person's body and stops the disturbances of this vibration. By
drinking this Hado water, the individual could correct the
disturbed vibration.

6.5. Emoto Peace Project

May 26 2005, Emoto declared that in the time required for the
ascent of the world's conscience, he was looking at the children
in the hope of positive change. He said he would like to produce
and provide 650 million (10% of world population) of copies of
the

version

for

children of

Message from Water in a decade, beginning in 2006, so that

children could understand the importance of life and peace.
As part of the United Nations International Decade for Action:
Water for Life, Dr. Emoto wishes to share his discoveries about
the responsive nature of water with children around the world.
Beginning in 2006, "The Message of Water" childrens book, will
be provided to all the children in the world at no cost within the
decade. This effort is called the Emoto Peace Project.
Dr. Emoto and many of his readers believe that water holds the
potential to create peace on
earth. Dr. Emoto and many of

6.6. International Water for Life Foundation

The mission of the International Water for Life Foundation is to
educate and raise the consciousness of all people about the
power and potential of water to affect life on the planet earth.
The IWLF conducts and supports research on water. In addition,
the Foundation fosters and distributes educational materials to
children. The IWLF evaluates and disseminates instructional
programs

and

provides

information

about

technology

for

developing water sources and well construction which allows

access to water for all.

6.7. OFFICE MASARU EMOTO, LLC

In March 2008, he established OFFICE MASARU EMOTO, LLC to
aim at bringing peace in the world.

Its a Limited Liability

Company that defines; not owned by anybody and Citizen

Participation type of company as a company for the people and
by the people to accomplish all the goals that this company has.

7. Conclusion
Dr Emoto's pioneering research has provided sound evidence of
the impact of thoughts, words and feelings on the body through
the medium of water.
His research is yet to receive scientific recognition, because a
repetition of his experiments under standardised conditions has
failed; but after doing some research I have came up to the
conclusion that even if Emoto is not following the steps of the
scientific method and his methodology is considered subjective,
he still has made evidence of his investigation.
The evidence he has provided is physical, so that the results may
be refrutable by any other person that could supply results
obtained by an accepted method as the scientific one; but
Emotos study of water is pseudoscientific (considered false
science by all traditional scientists), and this means that his
discoveries cannot be proved by traditional science and,
therefore, may not be accepted for the scientific community.
I also think that the conclusions that he has arrived to are
possible, but that what changes the water molecules are the
intention of the pronounced words and the intensity of its
vibration and not the meaning of the words. For example, a
couple of opposed words like love and hate pronounced with
the same intention and vibration could produce the same change
in the molecules; and that means that its all because of the
speaker and not only of the meaning of the words.
As a final conclusion, Id rather say that Emoto is doing a great
job not only deepening in areas never studied so far but
transmitting his knowledge to all people, overcoming any
obstacle he may encounter.

9.1. Interviews
Interview 1
Water Tells the Truth
An Exclusive Interview with Dr. Masaru Emoto
By Michelene K. Bell
Publisher, In Light Times
Masaru Emoto was born in Yokohama in July, 1943. He is a
graduate of the Yokohama Municipal Universitys department of
humanities and sciences with a focus on International Relations.
In 1986 he established the IHM Corporation in Tokyo. In October
of 1992 he received certification from the Open International
University as a Doctor of Alternative Medicine. Subsequently he
was introduced to the concept of micro cluster water in the US
and Magnetic Resonance Analysis technology. The quest thus
began to discover the mystery of water.
He undertook extensive research of water around the planet not
so much as a scientific researcher but more from the perspective
of an original thinker. At length he realized that it was in the
frozen crystal form that water showed us its true nature. He has
gained worldwide acclaim through his groundbreaking research
and discovery that water is deeply connected to our individual
and collective consciousness.
He is the author of the best-selling books, Messages from Water,
The Hidden Messages in Water, and The True Power of Water. He
is a long-time advocate for peace in relation to water. He is
currently the head of the I.H.M. General Research Institute and

President Emeritus of the International Water for Life Foundation,

a Not for Profit Organization.

MKB: Dr. Emoto, you are world-renowned on your research with

water. Why this field of study and when did you start?
Dr. Emoto: It was 21 years ago. While I was playing golf with
American scientists, my leg began to hurt. One of them gave me
a spray bottle of water and recommended that I spray the water
on the affected part of my leg. I followed his advice and the pain
went away rather quickly. This intrigued me, and was the catalyst
that sparked my interest in water.

MKB: Please explain your method of processing?

Dr. Emoto: In terms of taking water crystal photos, we put a
single drop of water (our sample) onto plastic Petri dishes. We
prepare 50 dishes this way. Then, they are placed in a freezer
with a temperature of -30 degrees for three hours. Our
researcher takes out each dish from the refrigerator, and then in
a cold room of 5 degrees, observes it under a microscope. At the
appropriate timing, as the water crystal develops our researcher
takes a photograph.

MKB: How does quantum physics relate to you water studies?

Dr. Emoto: Because I am a water researcher, and not a traditional
scientist, I am not an authority on quantum physics. Yet, I have
read many books on the subject. In quantum physics, as I
understand it, the consciousness of the observer affects the

physical phenomenon of that which is being observed. Similarly,

in water crystal photography, the consciousness of the observer
affects the outcome of the experiments, thus affecting the shape
of the crystals.
In this way, I believe, quantum physicists can study the world of
quantum physics, without any huge apparatus and without
incurring big expenses, by simply utilizing water crystal
technology to record the quantum effects of the observer.

MKB: What is magnetic resonance and how does it relate to

water?
Dr. Emoto: Magnetic resonance deals with hydrogen atoms in
water and is a detectable magnetic field. In conventional
medicine, this signal (in the water our bodies are made of) can
be manipulated by additional magnetic fields to build up enough
information to construct an image of the body. That is the basis
for MRIs. The same applies regarding magnetic resonance in the
waters of the world, which through the conductivity in it, allows
information to be transmitted. It is a natural state, a world of Ying
and Yang, plus and minus. All water has this property.

MKB: Through your research what is the most remarkable

findings about water?
Dr. Emoto: This year several scientific discoveries have shown
that water has memory. Mainstream science and recent
documentary films are contributing in spreading this fact to the
general public. In addition, I think whats fascinating is that water
exists in multiple forms. Liquid, gas, and solid. It is the only
substance that has these properties. It exists in many
dimensions, so to speak. In the future, it will be more and more

important for us to use water as a medium to exchange

information between different dimensional states.

MKB: What do you mean when you say water has memory? Are
you saying it has intelligence?
Dr. Emoto: Water has a role to carry information, and I dont think
it has intelligence. In essence, water is a mirror of the human
mind. A mirror of humanity.

MKB: You mention in The Message from Water that our words,
thoughts, emotions, sounds, music and intentional prayer can
impact waters structure. So how do words like love, peace,
gratitude raise the vibrations of water?
Dr. Emoto: I am certain that such words raise the vibrations of
water, just as they raise the vibrations of people. After all, we are
made of water. I have found that when the vibration is very high,
a very delicate form of crystal is observed under the microscope.
The more delicate crystal you find, the higher vibration the water
contains. These words carry a high vibratory signature, that when
combined with human interaction, resonate at a very high level.

MKB: What type of words cause the most dramatic changes and
how?
Dr. Emoto: As I have expressed in my studies, it is the words
Love and Gratitude. Love is an active energy. Gratitude is a
passive energy. God created these two energies as Ying and Yang
in the beginning, when the world was created. Therefore, when
you present these vibrations to water, water will respond in a
profound way, and show you a very beautiful shape of a crystal.

MKB: You speak often of prayer. How does the act of praying
effect water?
Dr. Emoto: Physically speaking, the power of prayer can be
expressed as E=mc2, where E is total energy, m represents the
number of people, and c is consciousness. When the vibration
from this combination becomes unified, it is subtle and strong. I
believe, there is a supersonic effect. It is proven by some
scientists that after water is treated with supersonic waves of this
nature it becomes better water.

MKB: Once we have infused our water, say a three gallon

container, how long does the water remain changed?
Dr. Emoto: It depends on the purity of the HADO (subtle energies)
and how the HADO has been infused. For example, was it a
human intention like prayer or thought, or a mechanical one, or
music, or a written word? It will be different in each case. For the
most part, water retains the vibration. However it is better to
repeat it for maximum retention of HADO energy.

MKB: What happens if we have no thoughts about the water we

drink? Where does it fit on the scale of benefits?
Dr. Emoto: On a scale of 1 to 10, the benefits begin when you
focus your thoughts towards the water. The greater your
intention, the higher the benefit is. No thoughts being 0 in added
benefits, and pure selfless intentions 10. The true benefits arise
from energetically connecting with your water.

MKB: Say for instance we are in a room that is playing beautiful

music. Is our water going to form beautiful crystals or do we have
to place our intent into that glass of water?
Dr. Emoto: Your intent is valuable but not necessary. If beautiful
music is playing in a room and water was placed there, water will
show a very beautiful crystal. This is because it is receiving a
pure vibration, resonating at a specific frequency.

MKB: Since our universe is comprised of energy, is it possible to

change water from long distance?
Dr. Emoto: I think it is possible. For example, we have discovered
that we can change the structure of a glass of water in Tokyo
from a foreign country. Also, Dr. Konstantin Korotkov is doing a
relevant experiment, which shows that water is all connected.
You can learn about his discoveries in the documentary film
Water, which shares many of the discoveries science is making
about water.

MKB: Would you please explain what is clustered water?

Dr. Emoto: In chemistry a water cluster is a discrete hydrogen
bonded assembly or cluster of molecules of water. You cannot
see these clusters with the naked eye. Yet, water molecules are
packed into many of these groups in liquid water. Although it is
still a hypothesis at present, this group is called a cluster.
Chemists are studying these clusters so they may provide more
information.

MKB: Is there a difference in cluster sizes and which one benefits

the body more completely?

Dr. Emoto: Imagine a lunchbox filled with grapes. Then, imagine

another lunchbox filled with grains of rice. In which lunchbox is
the conductivity higher? It is the one with rice, because it is
packed more densely. Regarding water, it is water with a higher
conductivity, in other words, water in which information is
transmitted. This means that theoretically, water with smaller
clusters is better water.

MKB: What words are associated with smaller clusters vs. larger
clusters?
Dr. Emoto: Negative phrases and words will create large clusters
while loving, positive words and phrases will form beautiful
crystal clusters. Slang phrases such as you fool can destroy the
process of clusters forming.

MKB: Dr. Emoto, there is controversy about distilled water. Are

there benefits from drinking distilled water?
Dr. Emoto: Pure distilled water will wash away essential minerals
from the body, and so it might not be a good idea to drink only
pure distilled water. Yet, we have found that distilled water will
accept information more easily. So, distilled water with
information, which is sometimes called functional water in Japan,
not called distilled water anymore, can be a very good water.

MKB: I believe some of your research included working with

stagnant water. What results did you find and what types of
water did you test?
Dr. Emoto: Polluted water is, of course, stagnant water. In
nature, water comes from a source and flows. In the case of a

river, water passes through upstream, midstream and

downstream on its way to the ocean. When water comes to our
homes, the water might be from a dam at a river, or a reservoir
where it is no longer flowing. Such water is stagnant. We tested
water at each of these points. We determined that the purist and
most beneficial water come from that which flows, and if water
becomes stagnant, the water crystal becomes very bad. We even
found that if water gets stagnated badly, it will give off a very
bad smell.
We also found that by using our methods of research and
thoughts, along with intention, that over time the formation of
beautiful crystals were created on a stagnant pond.

MKB: What is the most harmful ingredient or ingredients in our

drinking water today?
Dr. Emoto: I think it is chlorine. Chlorine can kill colon bacteria,
which means that it is very toxic to all the living systems. And it
doesnt matter whether the living system is big or small. This is
common sense. Fluoride is another ingredient that is harmful.

MKB: Is dehydration a serious concern and how does it effect our

health?
Dr. Emoto: If we become dehydrated very badly and the water
content of our body reaches 50%, then we would die. This is
because only water can maintain the vibration, which is the
energy that sustains all of our systems in the body. The less
water we have in our body, the less energy we have. It is crucial
that we stay hydrated.

MKB: There have been cases when people drink too much water.
Society advocates eight glasses a day. Is this enough and what
happens if your body cannot process that much water?
Dr. Emoto: It might be dependent on the size of the glass. If the
volume is 200 ml, then 8 glasses is 1.6 litres. In this case, 8 to 10
glasses are standard and good. If there is too much water in your
body, then there might be swelling and over hydration. If your
body cannot process the water, it means that the kidneys cannot
process the water either. In this case, the kidneys are not
functioning well and you may need to undergo artificial dialysis.
So, take good care of your kidneys and drink the appropriate
amount of water for your body type.

MKB: You speak of the messages hidden in water are telling us

to look inside ourselves. How did you determine this?
Dr. Emoto: The hidden message is actually Love and Gratitude.
I came to this conclusion because the water that was presented
with the words Love and Gratitude showed the most beautiful
crystals time and time again. I started to contemplate this very
deeply. What was it about Love and Gratitude? I realized that
these two energies have the most healing and transformative
properties. If we look deeper inside ourselves we would be able
to see where Love and Gratitude could transform us, and our
world.

MKB: Does water impact our spiritual lives and how?

Dr. Emoto: I believe that water contains the blueprint of life,
which was created by God. In other words, water contains the
intention of God, and we now understand that this is the spiritual

aspect of our lives. By focusing our own intention to our water we

can reconnect with this spirituality in ourselves.

MKB: Does just speaking an affirmation or thinking a thought

about water change it or do we have to believe the water is
changed? Is it truly about intention?
Dr. Emoto: Many spiritual teachers are telling us that we should
say our wishes or intentions in the past tense, as if it is already
so. This means that it is necessary to visualize the completed
result that we are intending. And so yes, our intention is very
important.

MKB: Since our bodies are 75% water, how can we utilize water
to improve our health? Is it again based solely on our attitude,
intention/faith, visualizing or affirmations?
Dr. Emoto: We should give our love and gratitude to the food and
water that we take and then eat or drink it. We should also do the
same to the environment, people and all things around us, we
should give our love and gratitude as it will show us that
everything is a mirror of our thoughts, beliefs and intentions.

MKB: Does a person need to know what is wrong with them in

order to be healed? Or, can they just visualize or say positive
statements and surround themselves with beautiful music and
soothing colors to alter their health?
Dr. Emoto: When you are in a very unhealthy state, it is
sometimes difficult to think about your body in a healing manner.
You may not think about playing beautiful music, surrounding
yourself with positive words and so on. Also, it may become

difficult to think about which part of your body is in a state of

imbalance. That is when you need your friends or healers to help.
You may also find answers or insight in books. During this
process, you will gradually become aware of the bad thoughts in
you, and these people may help you to change them into good
ones. Also books and music may cancel or neutralize your
negative energy and you may become healthier. Once you
become in a healthier state, you will be in a more balanced state
in which you can understand what you have learned. You dont
necessarily need to know what was wrong with you to achieve
this.

MKB: Please explain Long Breathing - do you think we can live

forever?
Dr. Emoto: I learned Long Breathing from late Dr. Nobuo
Shioya. In Japanese, Long Breathing literally means longevity. If
you breathe very rapidly, you will take in more oxygen and your
body might burn more quickly. So, in a certain extent, your body
might be burning out too fast. If you breathe slowly, you will
keep your body in a healthier state.
It is said that you can live up to 125 years. Yet, I think we have
the potential to live longer than this, possibly up to 300 years
old. Yet, for this to be possible, you need to have the right
environment. You need to understand that everything is a
vibration. And to resonate in a way that would support such a
long life you need good water, good air, good nature, and good
vibrations.

MKB: Dr. Emoto, what does your research reflect between

individual and group intention?

Emoto: As I mentioned earlier, the power of prayer can be

expressed as E=mc2, where E is total energy, m represents the
number of people, and c is consciousness. When the vibration
from this combination becomes unified, it is subtle and strong.
The affect is magnified when more than one person resonates
with this consciousness. Lynn McTaggert has done many studies
on this very subject.

MKB: Our water sources on the Earth are rapidly disappearing or

unusable. What can we, as a mass conscious society do in order
to save our water supply?
Dr. Emoto: We now know that consciousness effects matter. We
must use our consciousness to raise the vibration of the living
waters on our planet. This includes all the oceans, rivers, streams
and people on the Earth. Yes, people, too. We are all made of
water as well.

MKB: Does water impact our spiritual lives and how?

Dr. Emoto: I believe that water contains the blueprint of life,
which was created by God. In other words, water contains the
intention of God, and we now understand that this is the spiritual

MKB: Does the water form crystals only in the frozen state or is
there instant change when we place our intent through words,
prayers, thoughts or sounds?
Dr. Emoto: There is an instant change. Yet, if you want to see the
change as a very stable state in this third dimensional world, you
will need to observe the water in its crystalline state. Sensitive
people can feel this vibrational change.

MKB: What other source of validation is there from your

research?
Dr. Emoto: There are many studies being conducted around the
world, which validate this research. Some which are featured in
the documentary film, Water.

MKB: Dr. Emoto, one of your visions is to help humanity realize

peace. How do you propose such an undertaking?
Dr. Emoto: I am involved in educating children through teaching
them about the messages in water. I have a project called the
Emoto Peace Project, which shares the fundamental message
that the kindness of our words and actions has a direct effect on

the state of the planet and its people. I have shared this message
with children in over 70 countries. My childrens book has been
published in over 45 languages. My goal is to share this with all
nations across the world.

MKB: Where do you see humanity evolving to and what are

peoples role with planet and home, Mother Earth?
Dr. Emoto: I think humanity is just at the beginning of its first
stage. On the second stage, we will evolve our spiritual
connection to one another and begin to access the so-called fifth
dimensional world. There, we will certainly find guidance
regarding the path which awaits us next.

MKB: One last question. If you could impart to the world one
message, what would that be?
Dr. Emoto: The message would be the same as that to water. We
are all water. So to each other and to the waters of the world, the
message is simple. I am sorry, I thank you, I love you, and I
respect you. We should not forget these mindful expressions. I
am sorry. I thank you. I love you. I respect you.

MKB: It has been an honor and privilege. Thank you for your
time.

DR. EMOTO'S PHOTOGRAPH OF A PERFECT WATER CRYSTAL

Dr. Emoto (world famous scientist renowned for his water
molecular research states that the water from the IonWays
manufacturer is the purest he has ever tested. There are also
dowsers (if you believe in vibrational energy) who insist that the
IonWays water is 25% "better" than that from a Kangen unit. We
now believe that IonWays, new to Canada in April of this year, is
the number one water ionizer worldwide, for many reasons,
which will be shown at the next water party!
The websites to check out Ionways are: (some great videos to
watch here) click on the left hand side about 5 down where it
says 'Alkaline Water Videos' and watch the one hour video
entitled: The Untold Truth About the Water You Drink at the very
bottom!
Dr. Emoto decided to test water from a Jupiter Science Orion
Water Alkalizer and the result is below. The Delphi and Aquarius
also use the same water cell technology as the unit tested.
This is the first time alkaline, ionized water from a water ionizer
has been tested by Mr. Emoto. From the Hado Institute:

"Water is one of the most indispensable substances for the life of

human beings. Let's think about the water inside our body.
Generally, it is said that about 90% or more of the embryonic
body is water. Regarding an infant, about 80% of its body is
water and an adult 70%. As we grow older, the percentage of
water in our body decreases.
Here at IONLIFE we totally agree. Why does a baby smell so
sweet? Because he or she is made of sweet smelling, alkaline
saline, naturally mineralized water.
That distilled water is not like rain water has been shown by Dr.
Emoto using Magnetic Resonance Analysis (see image above).
While rain water contains oxygen and minerals and crystallizes
into snow flakes, distilled water has no crystalline structure and
is very acidic once exposed to air.
"It is not enough to take in a necessary quantity of water inside
the body, but we should take the quality of water into
consideration. For instance, the district where a lot of long life
people live is blessed with high quality from natural resources. In
other words, it is becoming common sense that there are a lot of
correlations between the health and the quality of water which
we drink every day.
Today, even if the water that we drink or use does not contain
any detrimental ingredient, the quality of water is not always
satisfactory. It is becoming clear that the formation of water
crystals reflects the quality of the water. I would be pleased if you
would deepen your understanding and interest toward water
when you see the photographs that are reported here."

Interview 2
XLSemanal.
Yo prefiero no hacerlo. No me
preocupo por el dinero o la fama. No me veo como una estrella.
Mis libros son las estrellas.
XL. Por qu est haciendo esta entrevista entonces?

D.B. Estoy orgulloso del nuevo libro y quiero que los fans lo
sepan.
Yo tambin recib apoyo financiero. Mi padre era profesor y tena
tres hijos... no tenamos mucho dinero.
XL.
qu hacan all arriba. Aquello siempre me fascin.

XL. Hasta hoy?

D.B. S. He dedicado seis aos a investigar su mundo.
XL. Consigui acceso a los masones?
casa llamada Isle of Langdonia, denominada as por el
protagonista de sus novelas, Robert Langdon. No se ha
pasado un poco?
D.B. No s cmo se ha enterado de eso, pero es cierto. Tambin

casa. Yo tengo ese cuadro. Se mover por una pequea
habitacin en Langdonia. Quiz escriba all. Nunca he escrito en
una casa.
XL. Dnde entonces?
D.B. Esta novela la he escrito en una cabaa en el bosque, con
un frigorfico y un ordenador, nada ms, ni Internet ni mvil, sin
conexin con el mundo exterior.
XL. Se pone a escribir antes de que salga el Sol.
D.B. As es, a eso de las cuatro de la maana. Es un ritual.
Siempre me he levantado pronto, ya de nio, siempre quera
estar solo. Me levantaba a las cuatro y media, me haca el
desayuno yo solo, lea tebeos y haca crucigramas.
XL. No se le hace raro no escribir por primera vez en seis
aos?
D.B. No, estoy muy contento de haber terminado este libro. Ha
sido muy difcil. El tema es muy filosfico y complicado de
desentraar. Fui escptico durante mucho tiempo. Ciencia
notica... suena a new age.Dediqu aos a la investigacin y
sabe qu?, la ciencia notica funciona.
XL. En serio? Pnganos un ejemplo.
D.B. Coja un vaso de agua y conglelo. Luego coloque a un
grupo de personas alrededor del vaso, todas con pensamientos
hermosos, puros, y ver que empiezan a formarse los ms bellos
cristales.

XL. Lo dice en serio?

D.B. Completamente.
XL. No ha perdido el juicio?
D.B. No he perdido el juicio. Haga el mismo experimento con
personas que tengan pensamientos oscuros, malvados. El hielo
se llenar de grietas y cristales horribles. He investigado el tema
y he encontrado pruebas. La idea de que el ser humano pueda
ejercer control sobre la materia me desconcierta.
XL. A m tambin! Se ha convertido en un cientfico
aficionado?
D.B. S, tengo que pensar, hasta cierto punto, como un cientfico.
Si te concentras el tiempo suficiente mientras observas una
clula cancergena, puedes hacerla sanar.
XL. Lo cree de verdad?
D.B. Al principio, no. Pero lo cierto es que hay muchas pruebas.
XL. Cuenta usted que, cuando se atasca escribiendo, se
cuelga cabeza abajo, de los pies, para volver a pensar con
claridad. Y en esos momentos piensa: Guau, soy genial,
80 millones de libros vendidos.

horroroso y grasiento plato precocinado.
D.B. Por supuesto que me encantara gustarle a todo el mundo.
Stephen King ha dicho un montn de cosas horribles sobre otras
personas. Su juicio no me sorprende. Pero slo escribo el libro
que quiero leer. No puedo hacer ms.
XL. Salman Rushdie afirma: Es tan malo que hace que las
novelas malas parezcan buenas. Le duele este
comentario?

XL. Suena a charlatanera esotrica.
D.B. S, eso dirn muchas personas. Pero adelanto que, en cinco
aos, mucha gente me dar la razn.
XL. Nunca expresa sus puntos de vista polticos.
Permtame que intente descifrarlo polticamente.
D.B. Prubelo. No desvelar nada.
XL.
No me
enter de nada.
XL.

Nadie me persigue.
XL.
D.B. Tengo tantos? Pues bebo un vino mejor y doy mucho
dinero. Me hace feliz. Por ejemplo, he donado dinero a esta
escuela, en Exeter, y hago muchos donativos annimos. Y mis
planes son hacerlo aun ms a menudo en el futuro.

Interview 3.

More Messages In Water

The Spirit Of Ma'at Interviews Dr. Masaru Emoto
By Reiko Myamoto Dewey, 07-04-2004
REIKO: We have read your book The Message from Water, and we
introduced it on our website in our August issue (see "Conscious
Water Crystals: The Power of Prayer Made Visible.") It has been
our most popular article, with its readership increasing every
week, and has raised many questions.
You mentioned in your book how you would type out words on a
piece of paper and paste these written words onto a bottle, and
see how the water reacted to the words -- what kind of crystals
were formed from the words. From your research, are you able to
discern whether the reaction of the water came from the
vibration of the actual words that were pasted onto the bottles,
or whether the intention of the person who was pasting the
words onto the bottle influenced the experiment in any way?
DR. EMOTO: This is one of the more difficult areas to clarify.
However, from continuing these experiments we have come to
the conclusion that the water is reacting to the actual words. For
example, for our trip to Europe we tried using the words "thank
you" and "you fool" in German. The people on our team who took
the actual photographs of the water crystals did not understand
the German for "you fool," and yet we were able to obtain exactly
the same kind of results in the different crystal formations based
on the words used.

REIKO: Have you found that distance made any difference when
people were praying over water? For example, if people in Japan
were to pray over water in Russia, would this be different from
people praying over water that is right in front of them?
DR. EMOTO: We have only experimented once with that in the
book. But from that experiment, distance did not seem to matter.
The intention and prayers of the person still influenced the water.
We have not yet tried further experiments from a long distance.
However, my feeling is that distance would not make much of a
difference. What would make a difference is the purity of intent
of the person doing the praying. The higher the purity of intent,
the less of a difference the distance itself would make.
REIKO: Have you seen any difference between one person
praying over water versus a whole group of people praying over
water?
DR. EMOTO: Since the water reflects the composite energy of
what is being sent to it, the crystalline structure reflects the
composite vibrations of the group. So one person praying reflects
the energy or intention of that one person. In terms of how
powerful the effect can be, if you have one person praying with a
deep sense of clarity and purity, the crystalline structure will be
clear and pure. And even though you may have a large group of
people, if their intention as a group is not cohesive, you end up
with an incohesive structure in the water. However, if everyone is
united together, you will find a clear, beautiful crystal, like one
created by the prayer of a single person of deep purity.
In one of our experiments, we had some water on a table, and 17
participants all stood in a circle around a table holding hands.
Then each of the participants spoke a beautiful word of their
choice to the water. Words like unity, love, and friendship. We

took before-and-after shots and were able to obtain some

beautiful crystalline structures as a result of this. I have some
slides that I will be showing of these crystals in my upcoming
European tour.
REIKO: Is the water influenced immediately, or is there a time
lag?
DR. EMOTO: In these cases we would freeze the water right
away, so we could say that the water is changed instantaneously.
REIKO: Have you ever tested other human body fluids, such as
saliva, blood, urine etc?
DR. EMOTO: Yes, we certainly have. However, fluids with other
elements in them, like seawater, blood and urine, do not form
crystals. However, we can dilute them with distilled water to
something like 10 to the power of -12 or -20 or so. This dilutes
the component of other elements in the fluid to the point where
we can freeze the sample and obtain crystals.
REIKO: Could you then see the effect that energetic healing or
prayer has on a person by looking at the crystals formed by their
blood or urine?
DR. EMOTO: As far as experiments related to the human body are
concerned, there are a lot of subtle influences that also need to
be taken into consideration. So although we are looking at this,
we have not publicized any information yet. However, you can
look forward to hearing about our findings on this in the future
REIKO: If we could imbue water with the energy of various words,
for example, with the word, "health," could we then use the
water that has that vibration in it and use it to do things like grow
food, water plants, etc?

DR. EMOTO: We have not tried this, but some people who have
read the book are experimenting with bottling tap water and
taping words like "love" and "appreciation" on the bottle and
using that water to water their plants, or to put cut flowers in.
They are finding that their cut flowers are lasting much longer,
and that the plants in the garden are much more radiant.
REIKO: Once a certain vibration is introduced to the water, how
long does the water "remember" that crystalline structure?
DR. EMOTO: This will be different depending on the original
structure of the water itself. Tap water will lose its memory
quickly. We refer to the crystalline structure of water as
"clusters." The smaller the clusters, the longer the water will
retain its memory. If there is too much space between the
clusters, other information could easily infiltrate this space,
making it hard for the clusters to hold the integrity of the
information. Other micro-organisms could also enter this space. A
tight bonding structure is best for maintaining the integrity of
information.
REIKO: What kind of words would create smaller clusters and
what kind of words would create larger clusters?
DR. EMOTO: Slang words like "you fool" destroy clusters. You
would not see any crystals in these cases. Negative phrases and
words create large clusters or will not form clusters, and positive,
beautiful words and phrases create small, tight clusters.
REIKO: You say that some negatives do not form clusters, but we
see from your photos that they do still form characteristic
patterns. How would you classify these patterns?

DR. EMOTO: Think of it in terms of vibration. It's easy to

understand that language -- the spoken word -- has a vibration.
Well, written words also have a vibration. Anything in existence
has a vibration. If I were to draw a circle, the vibration of a circle
would be created. Drawing a cross would create the vibration of a
cross. So if I write the letters L O V E, then these letters put out
the vibration of love. Water can be imprinted with these
vibrations. Beautiful words have beautiful, clear vibrations. But
negative words put out ugly, incoherent vibrations which do not
form clusters. Language is not something artificial, but rather is
something that exists naturally. I believe that language is created
by nature.
REIKO: Does that mean that every word has its own signature
vibration or cluster that is unique to itself?
DR. EMOTO: Yes. During our evolution, we learned what sounds
were dangerous, what sounds were soothing and safe, and what
sounds were pleasurable, and so on. We slowly learned about
various vibrations of the laws of nature. We learned this through
instinct and through experience. We accumulated this
information over time. We started out with some simple sounds
like "a" or "u" or "e," which evolved into more complex sounds
like "love." And these positive words create "natural" crystalline
structures -- which are all based on the hexagon.
In fact, the structure of all evolution in nature, from an
informational perspective, is based on the hexagon. The reason
hexagons are formed has to do with the chemical reaction of the
benzene ring. I believe that anything that lacks this basic
hexagonal structure is out of accord with the laws of nature and
holds a destructive vibration. So when we look at things that do
not exist naturally -- things that have been created artificially --

many of them lack this hexagonal structure and so they have, I

believe, a destructive vibration.
This principle is what I think makes swearing and slang words
destructive. These words are not in accordance with the laws of
nature. So, for example, I think you would probably find higher
rates of violent crime in areas where a lot of negative language is
being used. Just as the Bible says, first there was the Word, and
God created all of Creation from the Word.
So words actually convert the vibrations of nature into sound.
And each language is different. Japanese has its own set of
vibrations that differs from American. Nature in America is
different from nature in Japan. An American cedar is different
from a Japanese cedar, so the vibrations coming from these
words are different. In this way, nothing else holds the same
vibrations as the word arigato. In Japanese, arigato means "thank
you." But even when there is this mutual underlying meaning,
arigato and thank you create different crystalline structures.
Every word in every language is unique and exists only in that
language.
REIKO: Have you come across a particular word or phrase in your
research that you have found to be most helpful in cleaning up
the natural waters of the world?
DR. EMOTO: Yes. There is a special combination that seems to be
perfect for this, which is love plus the combination of thanks and
appreciation reflected in the English word gratitude. Just one of
these is not enough. Love needs to be based in gratitude, and
gratitude needs to be based in love. These two words together
create the most important vibration. And it is even more
important that we understand the value of these words. For
example, we know that water is described as H2O. If we were to

look at love and gratitude as a pair, gratitude is the H and love is

the O. Water is the basis that not only supports but also allows
the existence of life. In my understanding of the concept of yin
and yang, in the same way that there is one O and two Hs, we
also need one part yang/love to two parts yin/gratitude, in order
to come to a place of balance in the equation.
Love is an active word and gratitude is passive. When you think
of gratitude -- a combination of appreciation and thankfulness -there is an apologetic quality. The Japanese word for gratitude is
kan-sha, consisting of two Chinese characters: kan, which means
feeling, and sha, apology. It's coming from a reverential space,
taking a step or two back. I believe that love coming from this
space is optimal love, and may even lead to an end to the wars
and conflicts in the world. Kan-sha is inherent in the substance
H2O -- an essential element for life.
REIKO: So if we were to develop a car that could run on water
instead of gasoline, and return the water to the atmosphere and
subsequently back into space in this way, would that be one way
of fulfilling our task?
DR. EMOTO: I think that would be a wonderful thing, and for the
sake of preserving Mother Nature it is the direction that we need
to go. However, since water is the mirror reflecting our level of
consciousness, a large percentage of the people on the planet, at
least 10 percent of the people, need to have the love and the
kan-sha awareness. When they do, then the time will come when
water can be used to replace gasoline. And the reason I say 10
percent is that this ratio is mirrored in nature. When we look at
the world of bacteria, for example, there are 10 percent good
bacteria, 10 percent bad, and a majority of 80 percent
opportunistic bacteria that could go either way. In looking at the

various environmental issues we are faced with, and the tasks

that we need to fulfill for the planet, if we could get more than 10
percent of the people consciously aware, than I believe we could
pull the 80 percent in that direction, too.
And so I believe that the people who are following a spiritual path
are promoting peace for the planet and for other people. If we
could only unite on this level of consciousness, then we will be
there.
I feel that my book The Message From Water has given birth to a
convincing message through a common language for the whole
world. Not because I wrote it, but because I know it was birthed
through kan-sha toward mankind. I think this is why so many
people from other countries want to interview me about the
book. I am being invited to give talks at six different European
locations. Things have been coming in non-stop from abroad.
REIKO: Do you believe that water itself is conscious and is
reacting to the words?
DR. EMOTO: I understand that many of your readers are people
interested in spiritual matters, and I would like to answer this
question from that perspective. I believe that prior to Adam and
Eve water itself held the consciousness of God -- that Gods
intention was put into the medium of water, and that this was
used in the creation of Earth and Nature. In other words, all of
the information needed for Gods Creation was reflected in the
water.
And then we -- Adam and Eve -- were placed on Earth to be the
caretakers for this Creation of God. I believe that water held the
consciousness of God until then, but that after the caretakers
were placed on Earth, water became an empty vessel to mirror

and reflect what was in the heart. It became a container to carry

energy and information. Therefore, since this time, I think water
has taken on the quality of simply reflecting the energies and
thoughts that it is exposed to; that it no longer has its own
consciousness. Water reflects the consciousness of the human
race.
REIKO: Would you tell us your philosophical thoughts about what
you believe these water crystals really are?
DR. EMOTO: After the book was published, I was wondering about
this, and I came to the realization that these crystals are spirits.
There are many parallels. When ice melts, the crystalline
structure becomes an illusion. It's there -- and yet it's not there,
because you can no longer see it.
Similarly, when a person dies their body loses several grams of
weight -- what some people think of this as the weight of the
soul. But then we can often visually see them. I think that the
soul has mass, and that it returns to water molecules. And
because it has mass, it is affected by the gravitational pull of the
earth. And so sometimes the soul cannot transition over to the
other side.
In Buddhism, we talk about attaining sattori, or reaching
enlightenment. People who attain sattori do not become ghosts.
They are able to achieve a certain stage of development at the
soul level and return to God for a while before they move on to
their next assignment.
We traveled here to Earth on the water crystals of spheres of ice
[Editor's Note: You will hear more about this amazing
phenomenon in an upcoming issue of the Spirit of Ma'at on the
subject of water.] Earth is not our native home. There was

nothing here. So these souls can return to their native homes for
awhile. That is sattori, or enlightenment. However, most people
on the planet are not able to attain enlightenment. To reach
enlightenment means to be able to completely let go of the ego
and our worldly attachments.
In the past 100 years the world's population has increased from 1
billion to 6 billion. During these 100 years, war and capitalism
has dominated the planet. Rather than being able to detach from
our desires, the opposite has been true. Our desires have grown
and grown. Very few people have been able to attain
enlightenment in this environment. Few souls have been able to
go "home" and I believe they have remained on Earth in the form
of water. This connects into the concept of reincarnation, where
these spirits keep falling back to Earth and need to redo their
lives here.
REIKO: So when a person dies, if they are unable to attain sattori
at that time, their soul remains on this planet as water?
DR. EMOTO: That is what I believe, yes. The Japanese character
for spirit is a combination of the words "rain" and "soul." People
who have seen ghosts report seeing them in water or in places
where there is a lot of humidity. It's as if the imprint of the soul,
which is in the form of water, suddenly takes form when
surrounded by water or moisture -- much like a mirage.
And so, looking at the pictures of the water crystals and the
impact they are having, I came to the realization that these
themselves are ghosts. Up until now, I had thought of ghosts as
something to be frightened of, something that we could do
nothing about. But watching these crystals, I realized that by
simply projecting beautiful music and words onto them, the
crystals or ghosts become beautiful.

If that's the case, there's nothing to be frightened of. We need to

let everybody know about this, and all use beautiful words and
offer beautiful music, and create beauty in the environment.
By receiving beautiful thoughts and feelings and words and
music, our ancestral spirits get lighter and are now able to make
the transition "home." When we consider this, we can see the
importance of traditions like Obon [a Japanese summer tradition
where ancestral spirits are invited back to spend time with the
family, and the ancestors are taken care of and respected].
When we are alive, the human body is at approximately 36
degrees Celsius. This is the temperature of the fluids in the body.
When we die, this goes to zero degrees Celsius. When we die and
go to the other side, crossing the river, we are no longer able to
move our bodies. But the crystalline structure of our soul
emerges. It's like water. When water turns to ice, the crystalline
structure becomes visible, but it also becomes immobile. So
"crystal" equals "spirit."
REIKO: Thank you very much.

Double-Blind Test of the Effects of Distant Intention on
Water Crystal Formation
The hypothesis that water treated with intention can affect ice
crystals formed from that water was pilot tested under doubleblind conditions. A group of approximately 2,000 people in Tokyo

focused positive intentions toward water samples located inside

an electromagnetically shielded room in California. That group
was unaware of similar water samples set aside in a different
location as controls. Ice crystals formed from both sets of water
samples were blindly identified and photographed by an analyst,
and the resulting images were blindly assessed for aesthetic
appeal by 100 independent judges. Results indicated that
crystals from the treated water were given higher scores for
aesthetic appeal than those from the control water (P = .001,
one-tailed), lending support to the hypothesis.
Introduction
Experiments over the past four decades have investigated
whether intention affects properties of water. This question is of
interest to complementary and alternative medicine research,
and especially for therapies involving intention, because the
adult human body consists of approximately 70% water. The
question has been studied by comparing the effects of
intentionally treated water versus untreated control water on
the germination and growth of plants, including
barley, wheat, rye, beans, cress, radishes and lettuce. Other
properties of water that have been examined include rate of
cooling, molecular bonding as reflected by infrared spectra
alterations, Raman spectroscopy, scattered laser light, and pH
level. Although formal metaanalyses have not been performed on
these studies, overall, the experiments provide evidence
suggesting that various properties of water may be influenced by
intention.
Interest in this topic has been rekindled recently by claims
suggesting that intentionally influenced water can be detected
by examining ice crystals formed from samples of that water. The

specific claim is that positive intentions tend to produce

symmetric, well-formed, aesthetically pleasing crystals, and
negative intentions tend to produce asymmetric, poorly formed,
unattractive crystals.
Methods
Water Sample Preparation
In preparation for the experiment, the second author (G.H.)
purchased four plastic bottles of Fiji brand commercial bottled
water (Los Angeles, CA). This brand was selected because, unlike
many other bottled waters, after the Fiji label was removed, the
plastic bottle contained no words, symbols, or other shapes
embossed in the plastic. The first author (D.R.) randomly
assigned the bottles with labels A through D (using a tossed die),
and, with G.H., he selected two of those bottles to be the
treated samples (randomly selected as A and B); the remaining
two bottles were set aside as controls (C and D).
The treatment bottles were placed inside a double-steel-walled,
electromagnetically shielded room (Series 81 Solid Cell;
Lindgren/ETS, Cedar Park, TX) at the Institute of Noetic Sciences
(IONS) in Petaluma, California. This room was used primarily as a
convenient, limited-access location in which to place the bottles
during the remote treatment period. The control bottles were
placed in separate cardboard boxes and stored on a desk in a
quiet location on another floor of the building that housed the
shielded room. D.R. and G.H. did not inform the third or fourth
authors (M.E. or T.K.) about the existence of the control bottles
until after the treatment period was completed.
A digital photo of the two treatment bottles in the shielded
chamber was e-mailed to M.E. and T.K. in Tokyo to be used as a
visual aid for a group that would later be directing their

intentions toward those bottles. The treatment and control

bottles were maintained at approximately the same
temperatures and were handled approximately the same length
of time.
Treatment
On November 16, 2005, M.E. led a group of approximately 2,000
people in Tokyo in a prayer of gratitude directed toward the water
in the IONS laboratory, some 5,000 miles away. M.E. showed the
audience where the IONS laboratory was located in relationship
to Tokyo by using a sequence of images from the Google Earth
global mapping application (Mountain View, CA). Next, he
showed the digital picture of the bottles inside the shielded
chamber with the words of an intentional prayer for water
overlaid on the photo. After explaining the photo and purpose of
the experiment, M.E. led the group in speaking aloud the words
of the prayer. This lasted approximately 5 minutes.
Analysis
The day after the conference, D.R. and G.H. retrieved all four
bottles and wrapped them in identical sheets of aluminum foil
and bubble wrap, placed each bottle in a separate box labeled A
through D as appropriate, and mailed the four boxes to M.E.s
laboratory. (The treatment and control bottles were in their
separate locations for approximately 36 hours before being
brought together again for packaging.) The bubble wrap and
aluminum foil were used to provide a rudimentary shield against
sudden shocks, ambient light, and electromagnetic fields that
might have impinged on the bottles while en route to Japan. Each
box was packaged separately to avoid the possibility that treated

bottles might influence the control bottles through close

proximity. After mailing the boxes, D.R. and G.H. informed M.E.
and T.K. about the two control bottles, but they were not told the
conditions of the four bottles to ensure that their analysis would
be conducted blindly.
Upon receiving the four boxes, T.K. examined water samples from
each bottle according to the following procedure:
1.For each bottle, approximately 0.5 mL of water was placed into
each of 50 Petri dishes, and a lid was placed on each dish.
2.Each dish was then placed into a freezer maintained at 25 to
30C for a minimum of 3 hours.
3.T.K. later removed the dishes from the freezer, and, in a walk-in
refrigerator (maintained at 5C), he examined the apex of each
resulting ice drop for a crystal using a stereo optical microscope.
Previous experience with ice drops formed under these
conditions indicated that the apex was the location where
crystals were most likely to form. Crystals were defined as
hexagonal shapes.
4.If a crystal was observed at the apex (not all ice drops formed
discernable crystals), T.K. photographed it at either 100 or
200 magnification, depending on the size of the crystal.
5.All resulting photographs, from all four bottles, were then emailed to D.R.
Results
Analysis of Crystals

D.R. received a total of 40 photographs: 12 crystals were from

bottle A, 12 from B, 7 from C, and 9 from D. Bottles A and B were
the treated bottles, thus slightly more crystals were identified in
the treated condition. To assess the aesthetic appeal of these 40
crystals, a group of 100 volunteers were recruited over the
Internet to blindly and independently rate each crystal, one at a
time, on a scale from zero to six, where zero meant not
beautiful and six meant very beautiful. (The ratings were
collected via a Web site programmed in Perl/CGI by the first
author.) Beautiful crystals were defined as symmetric,
aesthetically pleasing shapes.
The order in which each image was presented to each judge (via
a Web page) was independently randomized. In addition, the
image titles (eg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg) were assigned random numbers
so the condition could not be inferred by examining the name of
the crystal image and the condition (treated vs control) from
which each crystal was formed was not indicated, and no
feedback was provided at the end of the assessment exercise to
prevent judges from learning which images corresponded to
which conditions. The planned analysis was based on the first
100 judges to complete ratings of all 40 crystals, for a total of
4,000 contributed ratings.
Discussion
This pilot study was designed to test the most plausible
conventional explanation for the crystal formation claim: the
presence of subjective biases. To eliminate these biases, the
person taking photos of the crystals (T.K.) and the aesthetic
raters of those crystals were both blind to the treatment versus
control conditions. The results were consistent with the
hypothesis that water treated with pleasant intentions would

result in more pleasing crystal shapes. If this effect was not due
to obvious subjective biases, then what else might have
accounted for the results?
Could the image assessment process have introduced a
systematic rating bias? This question arises because each rater
examined 40 crystal photos without prior training on the
meaning of aesthetically beautiful. If the sequence in which
raters observed these images was in a fixed order, then this
might well have introduced an artifact. However, this possibility
was specifically prevented by presenting the images in a newly
randomized order for each rater, thus averaging out potential
sequential effects.
Another concern may be that the scales used to assess beauty,
which were based on ordinal rather than interval measurements,
violated the ttest assumption of an underlying normal
distribution. This potential problem was ameliorated by using
scores averaged across 100 raters, but parametric assumptions
can be completely avoided by using a nonparametric
statistic. The method we used compared the observed mean
difference in ratings between treated and control crystal images
to the same mean difference determined after randomly
reassigning which images belonged to the treated and control
conditions. The original mean difference was larger than 999 out
of 1,000 randomly reassigned differences, thus the
associated P value was P = .001, virtually identical to the results
of the t test.
One might ask whether a new group of raters would replicate the
initial results. This was tested by examining the results provided

by 100 additional raters. The resulting t test was t (38 df) =

3.11, P = .002, confirming the original findings.
Perhaps the treated and control bottles were handled differently
(say, with more fingerprints on the treated bottles), and the
analyst (T.K.) detected those differences and was subsequently
biased. Anticipating such artifacts, investigators D.R. and G.H.
took care to ensure that the four bottles were physically handled
the same way and then packaged identically. A related question
is whether the treated and control environments might have
differed in important ways. The treated bottles were in an
electromagnetically shielded room during the treatment period,
but the control bottles were not. In addition, that shielded room
had been used exclusively for intention-related experiments for
several years prior to this experiment. It is conceivable that
purported space conditioning effects, as reported in previous
intention studies, or simply differences in exposure to ambient
electromagnetic radiation, may have played a role in the present
outcome.
Future studies would also benefit by assessing photographs of
the apexes of all available ice drops rather than just those with
crystalline shapes because this would eliminate all subjective
(albeit blind) assessments on the part of the analyst. The Petri
dishes from different water samples might also be randomly
distributed inside the freezer to avoid any inherent temperature
or position differences, and more objective methods of assessing
the aesthetic properties of the crystals could be employed.
There are at least three unconventional alternatives that might
explain the observed effects. One is that the intentional source
was not the audience in Tokyo but rather D.R. and G.H. This
possibility cannot be excluded, but, although these investigators

were open to the hypothesis, neither held strong expectations

about the experimental outcome. A second possibility is that the
water was not altered at all, but rather the bottles were randomly
assigned by D.R. and G.H. to the two conditions that would later
result in a fortuitous differential effect or that T.K. fortuitously
decided to take photos that would ultimately result in the
observed outcome or both. Such anomalous assignment effects,
formalized as Decision Augmentation Theory, require the ability
to unconsciously sense and act upon future possibilities, ie, a
form of precognition. A third possibility is that the intentions of
future observers (including readers of this
article) retroactively influenced the water. Although this
explanation may seem outrageous, there is experimental
evidence suggesting that such time-reversed effects may exist.
In conclusion, the present pilot results are consistent with a
number of previous studies suggesting that intention may be
able to influence the structure of water. Future replications
should concentrate on eliminating all conceivable conventional
artifacts, and protocols should be employed that can help
discriminate among the various unconventional explanations.

Strong correlation found between EFT (Emotional

Freedom Techniques) and Dr. Emoto's work with water
By Deirdre Brocklebank
I have been asking myself could there be more to the vibrational
impact of EFT on the body than we realize? For instance, how
does the tapping impact on the body outside the energy system?
As an adult body is about 70% water it seemed to be appropriate
to begin my research on this. This focus led me to the fascinating
work with water by internationally renowned Japanese scientist
Dr Masaru Emoto and the correlation between his principles and
those of EFT.
Of particular relevance to EFT is that after many years of
research Dr Emoto has demonstrated that molecules of water are
affected by our thoughts, words and feelings. Since the earth and
humans are composed mainly of water his message can be seen
as one for personal health, global environmental renewal, and a
practical plan for the creation of peace that starts with each of
us. Dr Emoto regards his work as a exploration of how the
cosmos works. Water has taught him about the 'delicacy of the
human soul and the impact that "love and gratitude" can have on
the world.'
Dr Emoto has visually recorded the impact of different vibrations
on water by freezing it and by photographing the resulting crystal
formations. Some of his photographs are shown in his books "The
Hidden Messages in Water" and The True Power of Water."

The following principles are basic to Dr Emoto's work and of

relevance for EFT.
1. Water is the life force and it is sensitive to all vibration.
2. The entire universe is vibrating and everything has a
unique frequency (sound).
3. The Universe is naturally in balance and harmony, and
discord has a destructive vibration.
4. The words "love" and "gratitude" form the fundamental
principles of the laws of nature and also of the
phenomenon of life.
Every living cell requires water and we are dependant on the
fluid flow in all the different systems in our bodies including the
body's electrical system. Dehydration, will cause the energy
system to be sluggish or severely repressed and this is one of the
recognized causes of Psychological Reversal (PR) in EFT. For this
reason, and also because people can become very thirsty while
doing EFT, it is necessary to drink water during the session.
Correct hydration is also essential for accuracy with muscle
testing.
Dr Emoto discovered a close correlation between peoples'
emotions and affected body parts. Of particular interest to EFT is
that he found that excess fear resonated with the kidneys. The
kidneys maintain the constancy of fluids to our internal
environment. They filter fluid from the bloodstream and are the
major excretory organs. His findings concur with the Five
Elements Cycle in Chinese medicine in which the kidneys are
affected by the negative emotion of fear. In EFT the collarbone
point is also the Kidney 27 point in acupuncture. I have found this
to be a very powerful point in EFT which is not surprising given
its connection to the kidneys, water and the emotion of fear.

Einstein's Theory of Relativity explains that physical matter

including the human body is made of energy at the sub-atomic
level. The principle is universally accepted in the scientific world
and the Science of Quantum Mechanics generally recognizes that
substance is nothing more than vibration. EFT practitioners have
been successfully applying this principle for years and the clinical
results prove it.
Dr Emoto calls this universal vibration hado which means "all the
subtle energy that exists in the Universe." Water is sensitive to
hado and according to Dr Emoto, water acts as a mirror of the
vibrations created in the world. This energy can be positive or
negative.
Humans are each vibrating with their own unique frequency and
have the sensory skills necessary to feel the vibrations of others.
My EFT experiences have enabled me to develop my skills in this
regard. As a result, I now often intuitively tune into the subtle as
well as the stronger more obvious emotions that my clients
experience during EFT sessions with them.
I also feel a range of physical sensations that they too experience
during the sessions. As our frequencies change, we literally
resonate with one another. I believe this is because I tap together
with the client and often speak the same or relevant words for
the problems on which we are focused. Gary has discussed this
effect in his Borrowing Benefits concept.
Another phenomenon that I have experienced with EFT is that
many of my clients tell me that after doing the technique they
have unexpectedly been able to relate better to people with
whom they previously had conflict. These were not necessarily
people that they consciously addressed using EFT. So even
though the person themselves has not necessarily made a

conscious effort to "make peace" with another, their vibration

had so changed after the EFT that they experienced greater
resonance with the other's energy. I believe that it is highly likely
that this change has occurred as a result of tapping into the
meridian system plus changes in the vibration of water in the
body.
Dr Emoto has developed a device that measures various
vibrations of the body at cellular level. He has expanded its use
to measuring hado in his development of hado medicine for
which the fundamental principles are vibration and resonance.
According to Dr Emoto, "When the cellular vibrations in different
parts of the body are disturbed due to various reasons, our body
can make a wrong turn. When this situation occurs, a new
external vibration can be given to the disturbed cell so as to
resonate with it, thus, its intrinsic vibration is restored."
The description of how these principles work aligns very closely
to the Psychological Reversal phenomenon in EFT. This is caused
by self-sabotaging, negative thinking which often occurs
subconsciously and is therefore outside our awareness. It is a
polarity reversal in the body's energy system -the energy is there
but it doesn't flow correctly. It is generally present when a person
confuses words, numbers and/or concepts and when they are
thinking negatively, and acting irrationally and irritably when
they are doing EFT.
In EFT, the correction for Psychological Reversal is made by
tapping (ie introducing new external vibration) and making a
Setup statement which acknowledges the problem (negative
words) and creates self acceptance despite the problem being
present (positive words). This changes the vibration in the
meridian system, and most likely in the water in the body as well.

Of great significance to EFT is Dr Emoto's contention that water

carries information both negative and positive to all the cells in
the body, coupled with his visual recording of water's ability to
understand the meaning of words.
He discovered that the vibration from negative words has the
power to destroy, whereas, the vibration of the "good" words has
a positive effect. The words may either be written or spoken. He
considers that all the vibrations both good and bad impact on
water in the body. This has a profound impact on our health and
general attitude and demeanor.
Tapping into the meridian system with EFT while stating negative
and positive words also has a profound effect. This is because
when a disruption of the energy system is calmed and relieved,
the person no longer experiences pain and/or or negative
emotions from the original memory or thought, as the associated
feeling has been "disconnected" according to Sylvia Hartmann,
the founder of EmoTrance.
Dr Emoto also discovered that water exposed to the written
words "love and gratitude" produced the most beautiful and
perfect of all the crystals that he recorded. He contends that
these words form the fundamental principles of the laws of
nature and the phenomenon of life. He found that while "love"
has healing powers on its own, the words "love and gratitude"
together form immunity in healing. EFT incorporates the words
"love" and "accept" into the Setup statement. Even though
acceptance of oneself is a type of gratitude it could be even more
beneficial, given Dr Emoto's research, to incorporate the word
"gratitude" and other similar words expressing thanks when
doing EFT.

Dr Emoto states that words spoken with determination have

strong powers. He was able to observe this in 1999 when 350
people assembled to pray for the cleansing of Lake Biwa in Japan.
The algae that normally formed in the lake did not appear that
year. He used Einstein's equation of E=MC2 to explain the
phenomenon of the healing of the lake. He considers that the "C"
can equate to "consciousness" as well as to the speed of light
which is the normal interpretation. In this case "M" could equal
the number of people consciously focused. This concept is not
new to EFT practitioners who have experienced Gary's Borrowing
Benefits phenomenon, as referred to earlier.
Everyone knows that negative emotions and feelings are a part
of us. It is also quite obvious that with an attitude of positive
thinking our health often improves.
Dr Emoto believes that we can correct our hado by using the
opposite word. So for example, "hate" has a opposing frequency
to "gratitude", "anger" to "kindness", "fear" to "courage",
"anxiety" to "peace of mind", "pressure" to "presence of mind"
and so forth. The EFT work by Patricia Carrington on choices
beautifully exemplifies the efficacy of this.
Dr Emoto's research has also demonstrated that while words
have their own unique vibrational frequencies these can be
affected by the vibrations of the person speaking or writing the
words. The implications for EFT centre on the importance of using
the individual's own words rather than only those of the therapist
when tapping, unless of course there is agreement on the words.
The following is another of Dr Emoto's findings that is worth
developing for EFT. He found that water responds to intent so we
can say positive prayers to water which gains the power to
potentially answer our prayers. He believes that we can send

stronger hado to water by praying in the past tense rather than

the future tense, as though the prayer has already been
answered. According to Dr Emoto we can make our thoughts and
intentions stronger by doing this. He also believes that it is
important to have a strong image of the desired result. Loudly
vocalizing the words gives off a stronger hado than writing them
on paper. He suggests that a practical way to create your own
hado water is by writing words on a piece of paper and sticking it
to your water bottle with the words facing inwards. Dr Emoto
recommends drinking five glasses of this water per day. If you
don't have a specific wish then he suggests using the words love
and gratitude.
I decided to do a small practical experiment with four people and
seven glasses of water to test some of Dr Emoto's principles. The
purpose of the experiment was to revise muscle testing in a
workshop while testing whether written words could affect the
taste of water. One person was muscle tested by three different
people for glasses of water which were each exposed to one of
seven words. These words were unseen by the person being
tested and the testers, until after all the testing had been
completed.
Results confirmed that water exposed to different words changed
taste. When the person was muscle tested, "nice" tasting water
tested strong and "not nice" tasting water tested weak. Three
glasses tasted neutral. For these, the muscle response was very
weak for water exposed to "ungrateful", strong for "live" and very
weak for "bad".
The results were useful for finding issues to pursue with EFT. For
example the person in this experiment liked the taste of, and
muscle tested very strong to water exposed to the word "die".

However, on two occasions she didn't like the taste of the water
exposed to the word "live" and she muscle tested weak on this.
When asked later how she felt about dying she answered that
she was quite happy about the thought of it. By contrast, living
was a challenge at the time because she was about to retire and
was not sure about her financial future.

THE MYSTERY OF WATER

We start our life being 99 percent water, as fetuses. When we are
born, we are 90 percent water, and by the time we reach
adulthood we are down to 70 percent with 90% of our blood and
plasma being water. We are all liquid beings consisting of about
ten gallons of water encapsulated in trillions of cells. Water is the
universal medium for all biological activity; it dissolves, dilutes,
transports, and reacts with every chemical essential for life. One
mysterious thing about water is that ice floats in it. This permits
life to survive safely under the ice during freezing weather. Most
scientists assume that water is water, just H2O, and judge its
implications to our health solely upon chemical and bacterial
analysis. However, it has long been recognized that cellassociated water (vicinal water) has different properties than
ordinary water. It is less dense, requires more energy to heat, has
greater viscosity, and different phase change temperatures.
The most mysterious and controversial property of water,
however, is its ability to hold and store memory. This property
underlies the healing capability of homeopathy, successful
healing technique for both humans and animals that has
prevailed for over two hundred years. A homeopathic solution
usually in water is produced via a series of dilutions of a
substance, often until effectively no atoms of the original
material remain. Only an imprint or memory remains for the cure
and the greater the dilution, the greater the effectiveness.
In 1988 the renowned science magazine Nature published an
article by a highly respected French biologist, Jacques

Benveniste, M.D. The research had been replicated in four

laboratories and had twelve additional co-authors. The
experiments showed that the immune system can be triggered
using dilutions to 10120 of an aqueous solution of an
antibody. Newsweek headlined "Can Water Remember?
Homeopathy Finds Scientific Support." The violent reaction from
mainstream scientists caused Dr. Benveniste to pay a high price
in funding, prestige and position for challenging the prevailing
scientific belief system. Yet research continues to support his
findings. A relatively new physical technique that measures
thermoluminescence is now being used and confirms the
memory properties of water.
If water has a memory then the water we drink is transferring its
memory into our "water body," just like a homeopathic solution
does. In the 1960s and 1970s Theodor Schwenk, a water
researcher in Germany, developed a technique known as "drop
pictures" which could be used to evaluate the hidden information
in water. In the "drop picture" technique the water specimen
under study is contained as a thin layer in a level, round glass
bowl, and is then brought into motion by allowing about thirty
drops of distilled water to fall into it at regular intervals. Glycerin
was added to the water sample as a neutral, inert agent to aid in
the production of visible streaks as the drops hit. Each streak
indicates a variation in density and index of refraction. The
patterns formed are photographically recorded as the experiment
runs it course from the first to the thirtieth drop. The
photographs clearly reflect the beauty of "living" water versus
polluted water.
In Japan, a new technique using crystals formed in frozen water
and high-speed photography was developed by Dr. Masaru

Emoto to evaluate the hidden messages in water. Samples of

water are placed in fifty different Petri dishes and then frozen for
three hours at -4 degrees F. The surface tension forms drops of
ice in the Petri dishes about one millimetre across. Crystals
emerge on to the crown of the drop of ice as the temperature
rises and the ice starts to melt. The crystal that best represents
the characteristics of a particular sample is photographed. Some
of the crystals are clearly similar, some are deformed, and in
some types of water, no crystals at all form. To reduce observer
effects and enhance repeatability each sample dish is labelled
with a different letter of the alphabet, and their identity is not
revealed until after the results are recorded. In addition, eight
different researchers are used to photograph the samples and Dr.
Emoto does not participate. However, the most spectacular and
controversial aspect of Dr. Emoto's research is the use of music,
pictures and written words with water to create both beautiful
and ugly crystal images. The words "love and gratitude" in
multiple languages when attached to the water samples were
able to prevent damaging effects.
Science has much to learn about water but the implications of
what the existing data is now indicating are staggering. Could the
water in everything we eat or drink carry with it a subtle
informational content that imparts a "memory" into our "water
body." Could the visual images that we encounter, the sounds
that we hear, and our thoughts all be encoded into the water of
our cells and become a part of our unconscious mind?
Last month we discussed data indicating that water can hold a
memory and impart information to our bodies. What kinds of
insights can science give us about this process? Water is held
together by attractive forces known as hydrogen bonds that have
an interesting property. The hydrogen atoms within each water

molecule are strongly drawn toward the oxygen atoms in

neighbouring molecules. In fact, the hydrogen partners are so
fickle that a water molecule changes partners ten billion to a
hundred billion times a second. Thus, the structure of water is
very hard to pin down. Research experiments have used both
neutrons and electrons colliding with water for just one
attosecond (10-18 seconds). A ratio of hydrogen to oxygen of
roughly 1.5 to 1 was found. Water appears to be H1.5O rather
than H2O.
Now add a substance to the water. When this happens the
presence of the dissolved substance causes the structure and
properties of the liquid water to change. A number of water
molecules surround the substance and form clusters. Water
becomes a mixture of hydrogen bonded clusters and unbounded
molecules. When water becomes highly clustered it is called
structured water, and it is recognized to have an informational
content. As the cluster become smaller in size and form
microclusters, greater energy and information transfer becomes
possible.
Now we come to the interesting question of whether water can
remember. Thermoluminescence studies of water show that
substances like salt can modify the hydrogen-bonded network of
water. Surprisingly, this modification remains even when the
molecules have been diluted beyond the point where essentially
no molecule of the original substances could remain -- in other
words, the water retains a memory -- just as homeopathy and the
research of Dr. Jacques Benveniste have claimed.
One way science models our physical world is as matter, like the
form of an atom, molecule, etc. Another way is via waves such as

electromagnetic waves, gravity waves, and quantum probability

waves. To discuss ways that information can be introduced into
the cellular structure of our "water body" we will use the wave
approach. At its most fundamental level everything in the
universe is in a state of vibration - - creating waves. In
homeopathy the information copied to the water is being used to
cancel out the information of the symptoms from the disease -- a
wave cancellation effect. Water is the master listener in the
universe -- and you are mostly water.
You will recall that Dr. Masaru Emoto photographed the crystals
that formed as ice melted into water to show the informational
memory of the water. His data indicated that music, sound,
pictures, words, and thoughts could impart information to water.
Hence, they must also be able to impart information to our cells
and our bodies. Music and sound are waves. However, to
comprehend the process, we need to understand the
phenomenon of resonance. Resonance is the transference of
wave energy between similar shapes and forms vibrating at the
same frequency. Very powerful energy transfers occur for
identical frequencies. The music you play caries its message to
the water by adding energy to selected resonant frequencies.
This is how music and light therapies work upon our "water
body."
But how could attaching words, symbols, or pictures to the water
impart information to the water? Each of these represents a
pattern or form. Every form has one or more natural vibrational
frequencies. In fact, the correspondence between shape and a
spectrum of waves and vice versa is an exciting new field of
mathematical research known as drum theory. If everything in
the universe is vibrating, whether it be drumheads, atoms, or

sub-atomic particles, then each will have characteristic vibration

frequencies. They each are putting out a different tune. Hence,
pictures, words and symbols also are transmitting a subtle
message via resonance -- this is the power of the image and the
written word. It is why advertising images and poetry therapy
have power, they are establishing resonances with our "water
body."
You may be thinking that this doesn't make sense since just
having written words around can't be that powerful. Now we
need to introduce the concepts of consciousness -- where is our
attention focused and what is our intention. Dr. Emoto reported
that the thoughts of his researches and of observers affected his
results. To explain the power of thought we hypothesize an
underlying unity, a substructure or foundation which underpins
the entire universe -- a domain of "unbounded potential" which is
and always will be; where there is no time, no space, only
complete interconnectiveness. We suggest that this is the soil for
the "non-locality" phenomena of physics. We (and every other
form in the universe) interact with this creative source of all
physicality in a feedback manner via a wave resonance process.
Our conscious and unconscious thoughts can therefore have an
effect upon water and our bodies.
How is the information contained in the memory of clusters in
structured water activate and spread throughout our "water
body?" To enhance and promulgate a memory stored in water,
the water needs to experience an impulse or sudden change in
momentum. In homeopathy this is accomplished at each stage of
the dilution process by shaking or vortexing the solution, a
technique known as succussion. In addition to homeopathic
remedies, information is being encoded in water to enhance your

health and vitality. Besides drinking this energized water, one can
also externally convey information to the body using structured
water patches over selected acupuncture/meriderian points.
Research studies are increasing demonstrating the power of the
information in structured water to not only heal but to enhance
one's stamina and performance.

Review and analysis of Dr. Masaru Emotos

Published work on the effects of external stimuli
On the structural formation of ice crystals.
This paper surveys the wealth of information that was uncovered
during investigation of Dr. Masaru Emotos claim that human
thought has a direct observable effect on the structural formation
of ice crystals. Upon initial review of Dr. Emotos published
findings, I became very interested in the implications of his
research and developed the initial concept for this research
project, which was to review Mr. Emotos laboratory methodology
to learn if it would be possible to test his hypothesis and
reproduce his results at Castleton State College. Since the human
body is composed of between 50% and 80% water, I could not
help but wonder, If thought affects the molecular structure of
water, then what effect might thought have on the human
bodies?
However,

after

many

hours

of

investigation

it

became

increasingly clear that a superior purpose for this project was to

review Mr. Emotos procedures and results for scientific validity.
This revision in the original intent for this project has been very
eye-opening and the findings have grounded my opinion of Dr.
Emotos work in a concrete of scientific rigor and skepticism.
Dr. Emoto became a Doctor of Alternative Medicine at the Open
International University for Alternative Medicine in India in 1992,

and he has become famous throughout the world in the

alternative medicine realm for his 1999 self-published book, The
messages of water. Since that time, his narrative and collection
of photos of ice crystals has been picked up by independent
publishing companies and has grown into subsequent works,
such as The hidden messages in water (HMW). Recently his work
was featured in a highly controversial movie titled What the
bleep do we know!? (Bleep) and published in an essay in The
Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (JACM).
These thrust his work into the international spotlight and
portrayed his work as proven scientific research. It was because
of the notoriety gained by his books and the Bleep movie that I
first learned of Emotos fantastic claim that he has found
evidence that human thought affects ice crystal formation and
that the structure and level of detail of an ice crystal is an
indicator of water quality.
An ice crystal is a crystal lattice of solid water molecules that is
often visible to the naked eye and commonly experienced as a
snowflake. The crystal exhibits the hexagonal lattice structure
that is characteristic of solid water, as illustrated in the picture on
the left where two views are shown of the same ice crystal
molecule--where the red balls represent the oxygen atoms, and
the grey spokes represent the hydrogen atoms.

Fig. 1. Ice crystal lattice scructure (Libbrecht)

Fig. 2. Ice crystal faces

According to Kenneth Lebbrecht, chairman of the department of
physics at Caltech and a leading ice crystal researcher, ice
crystals form arms on the crystal faces (shown in the picture
above on the right). The two hexagonal faces are known as basal
faces, and the six rectangular faces are known as prism faces,
and the overall shape of a crystal is determined by which faces
grow arms. If the basal faces grow, a columnar crystal develops,
and if the basal faces grow a plate shape will develop.
Lebbrechts morphology diagram below illustrates that ice crystal
shape is a factor of both humidity and temperature. Temperature
is the most important factor, and plates tend to form in the 0C
to -3C and -10C to -22C ranges (red), while columns tend to
form from -3C to -10C and below -22C (green). Lower humidity
tends to form simpler crystal shapes, while higher humidity tends
to form more intricate crystals. It is currently not known why ice
crystals form different shapes at different temperatures, as the

physics of how the water molecules bond to a growing ice crystal

are very complex and not well understood (Libbrecht).

Fig.3. Morphology Diagram of Ice Crystal Formation (Libbrecht)

Emotos hypothesis has evolved over the years of his research.
Initially Dr. Emoto claimed that high-quality water forms beautiful
and intricate crystals, while low-quality water has difficulty
forming crystals. According to Dr. Emoto, an ice crystal of
distilled water exhibits a basic hexagonal structure with no
intricate branching, as shown in the photo below, taken from Dr.
Emotos website www.hado.net (Hado). This basic hexagonal
crystal is the simplest form of an ice crystal.

Fig. 4. Photo of Distilled Water Crystal (Emoto, Messages)

The following images (Emoto, Messages 119) show Emotos
selected photos of ice crystal formation from tap water sources
from Paris, London, and Tokyo, respectively in figure 5 and two
spring water sources from Japan on the right.

Fig. 6. Photos of Spring Water Crystals (Emoto, Messages)

While these first claims of Dr. Emoto may seem to make common
sense,

his

subsequent

claims

are

ever-increasingly

more

controversial. After studying the variation in water crystals from

samples taken from different locations around the world, Emoto
decided to study what would happen to the formation of ice

crystals from distilled water after the liquid was exposed to

music.
Dr. Emoto reports that he found stunning correlations between
the types of music played and the quality and beauty of the ice
crystals that would form upon freezing. For instance, the crystal
below on the left was observed in a sample of distilled water that
had been played Beethovens 5th Symphony, and the crystal on
the right was observed in a sample of distilled water that had
been played so-called heavy metal music (Emoto, Messages
17). It is interesting to note that this claim closely mirrors the
well-known pseudoscientific and so-far unsubstantiated claim
that classical music has a beneficial effect on plant growth, and
rock music hinders plant growth.

Fig.7. Distilled Water Crystals after Music (Emoto, Messages)

Following his study of the effects of music on ice crystal
formation in distilled water, Dr. Emoto wondered if water crystal
structure might be affected by other seemingly illogical external
things, such as words written on paper. In the HMW prologue, Dr.
Emoto states, It didnt seem logical for water to read the
writing, understand the meaning, and change form accordingly.
But I knew from the experiments with music that strange things
could happen.

He began by writing phrases like thank you and you fool in

various languages on paper and placing the paper under the
distilled water samples, and his published photos below (Emoto,
Messages 7) show a surprising result. Samples that had been
exposed to the words thank you exhibited beautiful crystals,
while samples that had been exposed to the words you fool
would not form crystals at all.

Fig. 8. Distilled Water Crystals after Written Words (Emoto,

Messages)
Encouraged by his findings, Emoto began studying the effects of
prayer, blessings, and spoken words. Not surprisingly, his results
indicated that water crystal formation was also sensitive to these
things--yielding his current hypothesis; Molecules of water are
affected by our thoughts, words, and feelings. (Emoto,
Messages cover)
Dr. Emotos published method of obtaining photographs of
crystals involves a relatively simple and inexpensive process. 0.5
mL samples of liquid water from a specific sample are placed on
100 petri dishes that are then frozen and stored at a temperature
of -25C for three hours in a freezer. A sample is removed from
the freezer for observation under a microscope with a camera in
a room with a constant temperature of -5C. As the microscopes
light melts the top of the sample, crystals are observed and
photos are taken (Emoto, Healing 2).

As quoted in an interview with Jon Woodhouse published in the

Maui News, Emoto stated, I did not start out with any modern
scientific background. I did not even know the limit of science to
stop me from giving this research a chance. Not having been
educated in the scientific community, Emoto has been happy to
do his research without accurately employing the scientific
method. While he does employ the spirit of the scientific method
in his research design, he makes critical mistakes in its rigor. For
example, Emotos research does employ observation of a
physical phenomenon, formulation of a hypothesis to explain the
phenomenon, and testing and revising the hypothesis, but he
makes the critical mistake of failing to minimize the influence of
the experimenters bias on the outcome of the research.
Dr. Emotos procedure for photographing crystals has no
controlled means of ensuring that experimenters bias is
prevented or minimized. For example, his methodology does not
ensure that the obtained results are not selected consciously or
subconsciously by the photographer. In fact, in the Maui News
interview, Dr. Emoto specifically stated, I do not require any
blind tests on any samples, but rather he believes that the
researchers aesthetic sense and character is the most important
aspect when taking crystal photographs. Emotos belief that ice
crystal formation is sensitive to human thought lead him to select
technicians who would not affect crystal formation with negative
thoughts over technicians who had formal research experience.
While it is possible that he did, in fact, discover that water has an
observable sensitivity to external stimuli such as prayer and
words, Dr. Emotos experimental design and clinical procedures
do not prove the claim. A double blind procedure in which a
photographer would not know what water sample he or she was
photographing would make the claim considerably more credible.

Emotos procedure, while simple and direct, does not eliminate

numerous possible sources of error. Ice crystal structural
formation is dependent on numerous environmental factors, the
most important of which are temperature and humidity. While
Emoto minimized some possible sources of error by conducting
his studies in the same room with the same sample sizes, the
same freezer and same microscope each time, other possible
sources of error were not addressed. For example the Petri dishes
were not sealed to prevent contamination or disturbance by the
operator

or

environment;

simple

thing

such

as

the

photographers breath while using the microscope could affect

the warming rate of the frozen sample and temperature of crystal
formation, thus affecting the structure of the resultant crystal.
As Dr. Emoto has not published the entirety of his photographs, it
is unknown if he ruled out or ignored crystals that did not support
his hypothesis. HMW and the JACM article only contain selected
photos that support his claims, and we are left to wonder what
the rest of the pictures look like. His procedures state that in any
given test he will photograph 100 petri dish samples, yet only
one picture per test is provided to the public. Emoto also fails to
publish any findings that contradict his claim (or that were at
least inconclusive). No errors are currently published in the JACM
article, his websites, or his HMW book that my research has been
able to uncover.
It is also worth noting that Dr. Emotos procedures indicate that
his samples are frozen at -25C, and his ice crystals are formed
at -5C. According to Figure 3, these temperatures should
produce mostly column crystals rather than plate crystals, yet
not one of Emotos published photos show a column crystal. This
makes Dr. Emotos data suspect (as they appear to conflict with
the findings of well-respected researcher) and indicates the

possibility that Emoto excluded non-supportive data from his

publications.
While Emoto has published his claim in one peer reviewed
journal, it has neither been substantiated nor disproved by
research scientists. It is worth noting that Emotos Journal article
is not a scientific report, but a three page long photo essay. Dr.
Emoto, himself, stated Even though my book, Message from
Water, was first published in 1999 and has been translated in
over 20 languages, I have not heard of anybody else conducting
similar

research

(Woodhouse).

His

claims

resonate

with

Alternative therapists, religious leaders, spiritual researchers,

artists, and musicians (Emoto, Healing 3), but it appears that his
work has widely been disregarded by traditional scientists as
pseudoscience that does not merit further inspection.

There are innumerable companies today that make their
livelihoods selling information and products that are supposed to
be beneficial to human health. Ranging from miracle cures to
last-ditch efforts, they are at best based on unsubstantiated
ideas, and are at worst complete falsehoods. Unfortunately for

his credibility with the scientific community, Dr. Emoto sells

products based on his claims. For example, the products page of
Emotos

Hado website

is

currently

offering

geometrically

perfect Indigo water that is highly charged hexagonally

structured concentrate, and supposedly creates structured
water that is is more easily assimilated at the cellular level for
$35 for an eight-ounce bottle. Without providing scientific
research references for the allegedly amazing qualities of his
Indigo Water, Emotos commercial venture calls to mind ethical
concerns regarding his intent and motivationquestions that
would not be present if any scientist had published research
supporting his claims.
At the very least Dr. Emotos claims are interesting thought
stimulators. If they are true, then there are far reaching
implications for the world, and the question that is posed in the
Bleep movie becomes extremely important; If thoughts can do
this to water, what can they do to us? Many people in our
modern age want desperately to believe that we can affect our
reality by our thoughts alonea belief that is bolstered by
Emotos claims. But if they are false, then he is misleading all of
them and manipulating their hopes and view of the world.
Since Dr. Emoto is going it alone he receives much criticism for
being a quack selling quackery. For example, the James Randi
Educational foundation, an organization that offers a onemillion-dollar prize to anyone who can show, under proper
observing conditions, evidence of any paranormal, supernatural,
or occult power or event (Randi, Challenge) has offered to give
Dr. Emoto the prize if he will agree to perform his tests in a
double-blind fashion (Randi, Water), yet Dr. Emoto has not
responded.

It is this crucial lack of scientific foundation that prevents Dr.

Emotos work from attracting interest by widely accepted and
respected scientists at long-standing research institutions. This is
unfortunate for the world if there is, after all, truth to his claims-as reproduction of his results by any scientist would lend much
credence to his work. A little change in Emotos experimental
design would do great things for the credibility of his claims. I
recommend the following to ground his work in sound scientific
principle:

Eliminate the possibility of the scientists bias affecting the

experiments

results

by

implementing

double

blind

procedures.

Publish the entire collection of photos for all water sample

tests that he has performed, not just the ones that support
his claim.

Minimize the sources of possible error in his procedures,

such as variation in temperature and humidity between
sample.

Pay more attention to the time-tested methods of the

scientific

community

rather

than

disregarding

them.

Emotos research could go much farther if he could interest

scientists around the world in testing his hypothesis.

After the lengthy review of Emotos research methods and

results, I have come to believe that Dr. Emoto is offering
pseudoscience to the masses in the guise of defensible research.
Only time and review by others will tell if there is any truth at the
heart of Mr. Emotos claims, as Emoto himself thoroughly
believes in his findings but does not value the scientific method
or community. What is truly fearsome is the great numbers of

people that accept his words as proven facts without looking

deeper to find out if his claims are truly justified. While I respect
Dr. Emotos desire to save the Earths water from contamination
and pollution, unless he can produce a scientific paper and get it
published in a scientific journal, I believe that he will continue to
be ignored by the scientific community, and his claims will never
be soundly proved or disproved.
