IS 1077-1976, IS - 2212 and AFC drawings.

meet the properties of the respective class specified in IS 1077.

Unless otherwise specified cement will be ordinary portland cement


conforming to IS-269. Cement will be stored in godowns at site to protect from
dampness and will be made easily accessible for proper inspection and
accounting. MTC will be produced with every batch of cement.

Sand used for the preparation of mortar will conform to contract


specification PL/E&C/CONTR/CIVIL/SSPL/ML/2002-03/20 VOLUME II of IV
& IS 383.
Water:

Water used for masonry mortar will be clean and free from injurious amounts
of deleterious materials & conforming to IS-456.

This procedure covers supervision and method of record keeping of all brickwork
Reference-

Brick work will be as per approved construction drawings and


specification.Brick work will be done in cement mortar of specified and the
bricks will be soaked for at least 6 hours in water before use. The mortar shall
be used before it shows any signs of setting or stiffening. The mixing
operation will be carried out on a water tight platform. Cement and sand will
be mixed dry in required proportions to obtain a uniform colour. The required
quantity of water will then be added and the mortar mixed to produce a
workable consistency. Only as much quantity of cement mortar as would be
sufficient for 30 minutes of work will be mixed at a time.
Brick work shall be done in English bond with frog upwards unless otherwise
specified. No broken brick shall be used except at closures. Brick work shall
conform to IS-2212. The courses shall be truly horizontal and the work shall
be strictly in plumb.The mortar joints will not exceed a thickness of 10 mm
except where extra thickness is required for the purpose of bringing the brick
work to the required height or level or for making both faces even. The brick
work shall not be raised by more than 14 courses per day. Masonry will be
kept continuously wet while under construction and for a minimum period of
10 days after completion. Curing shall be continued twice a day for one month
after completion.

Construction of wall will be carried out regular and level course through out
their entire length and no portion of work shall be 0.90 meter lower than the
other. All cross walls, buttresses, counterforts and steps etc shalll be built up,
course by course, with the main walls embeded into them. Where such
bonding is not possible necessary grooves or toothing will be left in the brick
work for subsequent bonding.No mortar shall be allowed to stick to the
surface. The surface shall be rubbed down with brushes if necessary and
thoroughly washed. The joints in faces which are to be plastered or pointed be
raked out while the broken mortar is green and scaffolding shall be strong and
stiff.Holes left in brickwork to take the putlogs shall be properly bricked up
before plastering or pointing is done. Put logs holes shall not under any
circumstances be allowed in pillers and load bearing walls. Half brick work will
be reinforced with two numbers 6 mm dia. MS bars provided at every fourth
course with proper lapping as and when required.Continuous re-bars shall
have an overlapping length of 200 mm at every joint.
DPC:
The Damp Proof Course shall be laid at plinth level of masonry walls, flush
with the floor surface. The level of the surface of the plinth shall be checked
longitudinally & transversely. The last course of brick below damp proof
course shall be lid with frogs down-ward. D.P.C. Shall consist of plain cement
concrete of nominal mix 1:2:4 (1-cement: 2 coarse sand :3 crushed stone
aggregate) by volume with 10 mm and down sized graded aggregates.Side
form of wooden battens of 40 mm thickness shall be fixed on both sides to
confine the concrete so that the shuttering does not get disturbed during
compaction and leak through. The inner edge of the shuttering shall be oiled
to prevent concrete adhering to it. The surface shall be cleaned and the
masonry shall be wetted before concrete is laid. D.P.C. Shall be laid
in thickness 40 mm without any joints. If joints are unavoidable, it shall be
given at a place where DPC is to be discontinued such as sills of doors or
openings. A coat of hot bitumen of grade 80/100 conforming to IS-73 shall be
applied @ 1.5 kg/sqm over the dried up surface of cement concrete. A even
layer of coarse sand shall be spread over hot bitumen @ 0.75 kg/sqm.
6 Inspection:
No. of samples of bricks to be taken for testing shall be as per requirement of
IS-5454 and tested for compressive strength , water absorption etc. Bricks will
be checked for correct shapeand size. Brickwork will be checked for true line ,
level and joint. Cement, mortar used for brick work will be checked for correct
proportion.
