5.1

The purpose of this procedure is to prepare the sequential system

control on concreting activity to achieve the desired product.
Scope:
This Procedure covers the work method for placement of concretes.
Reference:
a) Contract specification PL/E&C/CONTR/CIVIL/SSPL/ML/2002-03/20 VOLUME II of IV,
b) IS 10262 & IS 456
c) IS-383
d) IS 1786

Materials:
Water:

Water used in concreting shall be clean and free from injurious

amount of acid, alkalies, organic matter or other harmful
substances which may be deleterious to concrete. Potable water
shall be considered as satisfactory. Test on water sample will be
carried out in accordance with IS-3025 and they shall fulfill all the
guidelines and requirements of IS-456. Water for curing shall be of
same type.
5.2 Coarse Aggregates:
Coarse aggregates shall conform in all respect to IS-383.
Aggregates shall be obtained from source approved by IOCL.
Aggregates shall consist of naturally occuring stone (crushed or
uncrushed) , gravel,. These shall be hard, stony, dark, durable,
clean and free from adherent coatings and other deletarious
materials. Maximum quantity of harmful materials in aggregate
shall not exceed the limit defined in IS-383.

5.3 Fine aggregates:

These shall comply with the requirements of IS-383. Fine
aggregates shall consist of materials resulting from natural
disintegration of rock and which has been deposited by stream,
crushed stone sand or gravel . Fine aggregates shall be from
approved sources only .
5.4 Cement:
Normally the cement shall be ordinary portland cement conforming
to IS-269. Manufacturer Test certificate of the cement of each
consignment shall be submitted to IOCL.
6 Method:
6.1 Concreting:

Concrete mix design is to be established based on workability,

durability requirements given in IS: 456 for each grade of concrete
taking into account the type of cement. Minimum cement content,
6.1.1 maximum W/C ratio conforming to exposure conditions as per
specs.
6.1.2 Submit the pour card to IOCL before concreting and the same should

concrete flattens and takes up a glistening appearance, the rise of
entrapped air ceases, the coarse agregate blends into the surface
but does not completely disappear. The vibrator will be slowly
withdrawn to ensure closing of the hole resulting from insertion.
Unless otherwise approved, continuous concreting shall be done
to the full thickness of foundation rafts,slabs, beams & similar
6.1.6 members. For placing on slope, placing will be started at the
bottom and moved up. Concrete shall not fall from a height of
more than 1.5m to avoid segregation.
Curing of concrete with approved water shall start after 8 hours of
6.1.7 placement of concrete and in hot weather after 4 hours. Concrete
will be cured for a minimum period of seven days.
6.1.8 All blemishes and defect if any, will be rectified immediately after the removal of formwork.
6.1.9 Construction joints shall be provided as per the specification .
6.1.10 Water retaining structures shall be done as per the specification .
6.1.11 Tolerances of concrete surfaces shall be as per IS 456.
6.1.12 Concrete cube sample shall be taken and tested 3 cubes for 7 days & 3 cubes for 28 days.
