Logix5550 Controller Quick Start

(catalog number 1756-L1)
Before You Begin
Use this document as a guide for installing and powering-up your
Logix5550 controller. You should already be familiar with the
ControlLogix system components. See the documentation references for
detailed information.

Tools that you need

1/4 slotted (#2) or phillips screwdriver

1/8 slotted screwdriver
mounting tab hardware (for mounting the chassis)
drill (for mounting the chassis)
needle-nose pliers

Important: Installation instructions ship with each ControlLogix

component. If you want the Logix5550 User Manual or other
ControlLogix documentation, you must order the
documentation separately:

Logix5550 Controller Quick Start

Handling the ControlLogix system components

Take these precautions to guard against ESD damage:

ATTENTION: Electrostatic discharge can damage the

components. Follow these guidelines:

touch a grounded object to discharge potential static

wear an approved grounding wriststrap
do not touch connectors or pins on component boards
do not touch circuit components inside the controller
if available, use a static-safe work station
when not in use, store each component in the anti-static
packaging in which it was shipped

You can install or remove ControlLogix system components while chassis

power is applied and the system is operating. If you remove the controller,
all the devices owned by the controller go to their configured faulted state.

ATTENTION: When you insert or remove a module while

backplane power is on, an electrical arc may occur. An
electrical arc can cause personal injury or property
damage by:
sending an erroneous signal to your systems actuators
causing unintended machine motion or loss of
process control
causing an explosion in a hazardous environment
Repeated electrical arcing causes excessive wear to contacts
on both the module and its mating connector. Worn contacts
may create electrical resistance that can affect
module operation.

CSA Hazardous Location Approval

CSA Hazardous Location Approval

Approbation dutilisation dans des

emplacements dangereux par la CSA

CSA certifies products for general use as well

as for use in hazardous locations. Actual CSA
certification is indicated by the product
label as shown below, and not by statements
in any user documentation.

La CSA certifie les produits dutilisation

generale aussi bien que ceux qui sutilisent
dans des emplacements dangereux. La
certification CSA en vigueur est indiquee par
letiquette du produit et non par des
affirmations dans la documentation a lusage
des utilisateurs.

To comply with CSA certification for use in

hazardous locations, the following information
becomes a part of the product literature for this
CSA-certified industrial control product.
This equipment is suitable for use in Class I,
Division 2, Groups A, B, C, D, or nonhazardous locations only.
The products having the appropriate CSA
markings (that is, Class I, Division 2, Groups
A, B, C, D) are certified for use in other
equipment where the suitability of
combination (that is, application or use) is
determined by the CSA or the local
inspection office having jurisdiction.

bureau local d'inspection qualifie.

Important: Due to the modular nature of a

programmable control system, the product
with the highest temperature rating
determines the overall temperature code
rating of a programmable control system in a
Class I, Division 2, location. The temperature
code rating is marked on the product label
as shown.

Important: Par suite de la nature modulaire du

systeme de controle programmable, le produit
ayant le taux le plus eleve de temperature
determine le taux d'ensemble du code de
temperature du systeme de controle d'un
programmable dans un emplacement de
Classe 1, Division 2. Le taux du code de
temperature est indique sur l'etiquette
du produit.
