Citizens Bank Marks Small Business Month

8 tips for improving small business cash flow
Citizens Bank is marking Small Business Month by offering eight
simple small business cash flow tips.
Managing cash flow is one of the most important yet underappreciated challenges faced by small businesses, said Quincy Miller,
President of Business Banking for Citizens. Companies that have
accelerated their receivables, streamlined their payroll and established
more-advantageous payment terms and processes with their vendors,
suppliers and customers have a definite competitive advantage in todays
marketplace, no matter their business.
In many cases, with business owners focused primarily on day-to-day
operations, cash flow is only a focal point when there is a problem. But
business owners who establish proactive strategies for cash management
are able to avoid those problems and create new growth opportunities
through reinvestment by making their capital work better for them.
Consider the following tips to improve cash flow:
Understand your operating cycle Regardless of size, every business
must deposit, monitor and manage cash; make payments; fund purchases;
invest in their company; and receive payments. Reviewing and
understanding each step in this cash flow cycle can help a company work
more efficiently.
Encourage faster payments Can you provide an incentive or
discount to customers or vendors to encourage them to pay faster? The
sooner a payment is received, the sooner you can put that revenue to
work for your company. Collections services like lockbox also can help
post payments to your accounts more quickly.
Consider remote deposits - Some banks offer customers the
opportunity to make remote check deposits from their mobile device,
sparing them trips to the branch. This allows companies to save time and

to keep their workforce focused on operations a benefit of particular

importance for companies with only a few employees.
Review your payroll process If you pay your employees twice a
month instead of every other week, you will be managing 24 payroll
periods instead of 26 during the course of a year, making your company
more efficient. Direct deposit of employees paychecks into their
accounts can also create efficiencies.
Evaluate real-time wires - If your small business is buying or selling
overseas, real-time wires may be an option in lieu of visiting a bank
branch. Some banks have the ability for customers to make ACH
payments from their desk or office, which saves time and increases
productivity.
Manage outgoing payments in an advantageous manner - Banks can
help establish relationships with credit card companies that can speed up
payments from customers while giving additional timing or flexibility for
repayment to settle your account.
Look at opening a business credit card A business credit card has
many advantages, including the establishment of a clear separation of
business and personal finances. In addition to providing clarity in the day
to day operations of your business, this arrangement can eliminate
confusion during tax preparations. If you have employees with company
cards, consider solutions that allow you to monitor, track and control the
way those cards are used.
Have a Plan B If you assume you can borrow funds to cover a cash
shortfall, be sure to have a loan or line of credit set-up before the cash is
actually needed. Waiting until the shortfall occurs leaves you in a ditch as
most financial institutions will hesitate to lend money when your
business is already in financial straits.

African-American Chamber of Commerce of PA, NJ & DE Exceeds Membership Goals

The African-American Chamber of Commerce of PA, NJ & DE
(AACC) has exceeded their membership goal of 400 members for the
2014-15 fiscal year. The organization is now reporting a membership of
405 members - a 78% increase in one year.
"We are excited about the growth of the AACC," states Steven Scott

understand the importance and relevance an organization like the AACC
can have on growing their business and contributing to the economic
development of the region."
The AACC Board of Directors named Shalimar Thomas as the
Executive Director in January 2013. Collectively, the new leadership and
Board of Directors work to ensure that the AACC remains an advocate
and voice for African American businesses, while implementing valuable
programs that support businesses at various stages of development.
"This is the first step to make sure the AACC supports efforts to build
a stronger Philadelphia," states Thomas. "The organization will now
work to continue building membership, and ensure that we are producing
quality businesses that are engaged, are able to help businesses meet their
diversity goals, and understand the importance policy has on improving

business development in the region."

Businesses and individuals join the AACC to have a voice in
legislation. In addition, their membership helps them connect with more
than $300 million in contract opportunities and some of the region's top
business and community leaders.
For three consecutive years, the AACC has been named one of the
top Chambers of Commerce is the region. In addition, the AACC
continues to be the only Chamber of Commerce in Philadelphia with a
specific focus on African-American business development, and continues
to play a supportive role at helping organizations meet supplier diversity
goals.
"The Chamber continues to be an invaluable resource for myself and
my business," states Dewain Johnson, owner of 215 Media. "I've taken
away something beneficial to my development from each event I have
attended and the support they've given to my business is just amazing.
My membership is easily one of the best investments I make each year."

African-American Chamber of Commerce of PA, NJ and DE (AACC) Announces

Keynote Speaker for 2015 Annual Meeting and Awards Gala
On Wednesday, May 27, 2015, the African-American Chamber of
Commerce of PA, NJ and DE (AACC) will host its 2015 Annual Meeting
and Awards Gala at the First District Plaza, located at 3801 Market Street
in Philadelphia. This year, R. Donahue Peebles, Founder, Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer of the Peebles Corporation will serve as the
keynote presenter, and be interviewed by Bill Anderson, Fox29 Weekend
Co-Host. In addition, Alex Holley and Mike Jerrick, Co-Hosts of Fox 29
News, will serve as the emcees for the program.
Peebles Corporation is the largest African American-owned real
estate development and ownership company in the US, with a multibillion dollar development portfolio of luxury hotels, high-rise residential
and commercial properties in New York City,Washington, D.C.,
Philadelphia, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Miami Beach, and Boston. In
May 2009, Forbes listed Peebles in the top ten of the wealthiest black
Americans, and in January 2015 it estimated his net worth to be over
$700 million.
The AACC has been a tremendous force in the creation, growth and
sustainment of economic opportunity for minorities and minority-owned
businesses, said Peebles. As this years Keynote Speaker and a
fellow entrepreneur who was once given a chance it brings me great
honor to share my story and plan for building a lasting legacy while
contributing to the AACCs already-progressive program, and inspiring
business owners to be the catalysts for enduring opportunity.
This years theme, Building Businesses. Creating Legacies, will
highlight programs that helped businesses grow, hire and contribute to
the economic development in the region. In addition, the AACC will
announce an upcoming initiative regarding programs created to address
the increasing crisis on succession planning in the African American

business community.
Last year, part of the AACCs
strategic plan was to focus on
programs that helped more
businesses move beyond the start-up
stage, states Steven Scott Bradley,
AACC Chairman. Now that we have
effective, result-oriented
programs in place, the AACC
believes that now is a great time to
focus on helping these businesses
create legacies.
To assist with this effort, the
R. Donahue Peebles
AACC has partnered with various
organizations, including the Urban Affairs Coalition, Pierce College and
the City of Philadelphia Office of Economic Opportunity.
Creating strong strategic partnerships has been a top agenda item for
the AACC, states Shalimar Thomas, Executive Director of the AACC.
Over the years, we have realized the greater impact we can have by
collectively pooling resources and knowledge to have a noticeable
impact on the demographic we serve.
In addition to succession planning, the keynote presentation will
focus on topics that include involvement in policy, econimc inclusion and
capacity building. The AACC will also honor businesses and individuals
for their success in business and contribution to their community.
For additional information about the event, please contact
(215) 751-9501 or visit www.aachamber.org.

African-American Chamber of Commerce Announces Supplier Development Program

The African-American Chamber of Commerce of PA, NJ and DE
(AACC) will kick-off the Supplier Development Program series.
Sponsored by Independence Blue Cross and AmeriHealth Caritas, the
AACC Supplier Development Program focuses on key areas that
contribute to minority business failure and aims to grow more businesses
who can hire within the communities they serve, and quickly serve the
needs of businesses looking to improve and grow their supplier diversity
spend.
The AACC is working to change a growing crisis in the region
where there is a stagnant number of minority businesses that cannot
compete and grow their business to scale, states Shalimar Thomas,
Executive Director of the AACC. By creating a supplier development
program that helps develop established small businesses, the AACC is
working to get more minority businesses educated on the importance and
impact growing their business can have on the region.
Research indicates that despite the promise with supplier diversity,
both minority firms and large companies face challenges in building
successful business relationships. Minority businesses are usually smaller
and may not have the financial or physical resources to compete with
large suppliers, therefore, companies may find it difficult to obtain
minority suppliers who can provide sufficient scale and service.
At Independence Blue Cross, we strive to attract business suppliers
that reflect the diversity of the community where we live and work, and

we are proud to support the African-American Chamber of Commerce

Supplier Development series, said Alan Krigstein, Independence
executive vice president and chief financial officer. We respect the
diversity of our community and our customers and believe that we can
serve them most effectively by embracing diversity within our company.
Our corporate culture is one of openness, integrity, and respect where we
value the contributions of talented business owners with varied
backgrounds and viewpoints.
The Supplier Development program is targeted and promote an
ongoing message of sustainability, job creation and capacity building.
Classes are taught by industry experts and topics include Industry Market
Analysis, Developing a Growth Strategy, Developing Your Management
Team and Identifying the Problem. Those who complete the program are
automatically nominated for the Good to Grand Award, will have the
application fee waived for the Preferred Members Program, receive
access to suppliers who can assist you with obtaining larger contracts and
learn valuable techniques that will help grow their business and build
capacity.
This program is open to both members and future members of the
AACC. For additional information about the Supplier Development
Program, or the AACC please contact (215) 751-9501 or visit

Kinsey appointed to state Minority Business Development Authority

State Rep. Stephen Kinsey, D-Phila., has been appointed as the
House Democratic member of the Pennsylvania Minority Business
Development Authority for the 2015-16 legislative session.
The PMBDA offers low-interest loan financing to businesses owned
and operated by ethnic minorities.
The recommendation to appoint Kinsey was made by House Minority
Leader Frank Dermody, D-Allegheny.
"The PMBDA mission is one that aligns with my goals as a state

representative," Kinsey said. "I look forward to having a say as I work to

help increase the growth and success of minority-owned businesses
across the commonwealth. Entrepreneurship is a hard-fought goal for
many Pennsylvanians, and I believe that the PMBDA can be that vehicle
and play an integral role in helping minorities to realize their dreams.
"Minority success in entrepreneurship directly and positively affects
Pennsylvanias economic climate, and the jobs that they create make real
differences in the communities we call home."

Turn up that dial! The Tony Award-Winning Musical MEMPHIS Begins May 12!
Walnut Street Theatre concludes its landmark 206th season with
Broadways rockin Tony Award-winning Best Musical, MEMPHIS.
Directed and choreographed by Richard Stafford, this exhilarating
musical begins previews on May 12th, opens on May 20th and runs
through July 12th on the WST Mainstage.
From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee,
comes a hot new musical that bursts off the stage with explosive dancing,
irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspired
by actual events, MEMPHIS is about a radio DJ who wants to change the
world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. The show
features an original score by Bon Jovi's David Bryan that evokes the
powerhouse funk of James Brown, the hot guitar riffs of Chuck Berry,
the smooth harmonies of the Temptations and the silken, bouncy pop of
the great girl groups of the period. It's time for the roof-raising rock 'n'
roll musical, MEMPHIS!
Disc Jockey Dewey Phillips was one of the first white DJs to play
black music in Memphis during the 1950s. His story inspired David
Bryan (music and lyrics) and Joe DiPietro (book, music and lyrics) to
write the sensational musical MEMPHIS. Bryan is a founding member

and keyboardist of the legendary band Bon Jovi. Among DiPietros

credits is Living on Love, currently running on Broadway starring Rene
Flemming, All Shook Up and Off-Broadways longest running
production I Love You, Youre Perfect, Now Change (book and lyrics).
The pair first teamed up for The Toxic Avenger which opened OffBroadway in April, 2009. Their latest project, Chasing the Song, had its
world premiere last year at La Jolla Playhouse.
MEMPHIS opened on Broadway in October, 2009 to critical acclaim
and ran through August 2012. The show won four Tony Awards,
including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score
Written for the Theatre and Best Orchestrations.
Richard Stafford returns to the Walnut as director and choreographer.
MEMPHIS runs at the Walnut May 12 through July 12. This
production is sponsored by Progressive Business Publications. PNC Arts
Alive is the Walnuts Community Partner for MEMPHIS. Media Sponsor
is NBC 10. For tickets and information, call 215-574-3550 or
