Siti helped her mother to clean the clam before cooking them. Accidentally she poured
some vinegar into the bowl containing clam. She found that effervescence occurred and
bubbles gas released.
With curiosity, Siti carried out an experiment to investigate the reaction between the clam
shells with hydrochloric acid and repeated with ethanoic acid. Table 3 shows the
information for two set of experiments carried out by Siti.
Siti membantu ibunya membersihkan kerang sebelum memasak.

Eksperimen

Description
Huraian
5g of crushed clam shell and 50 cm3 of 0.2 moldm-3 hydrochoric acid

Set I
5g serpihan cengkerang kerang dan 50 cm3 asid hidroklorik 0.1 moldm-3
5g of crushed clam shell and 50 cm3 of 0.2 moldm-3 ethanoic acid
Set II
5g serpihan cengkereng kerang dan 50 cm3 asid etanoik 0.2 moldm-3
Table 3/Jadual 3
(a)

Based on the information in Table 3 ,write the chemical equation that occur in set I and
set II.
[ 2 marks]

(b)

(i)

Based on the information in Table 3 , compare the observation of set I and II. Explain
your answer.
Set I dan Set II. Berikan penerangan untuk jawapan
[5 marks]

(c)

Name the gas release and describe a method to verify its identity.
[3 marks]

(d)

You were given two subtances, subtances X and Y. Without using indicator, plan an
experiment to differentiate whether substance X or Y is an acid. Your description
must include
*A list of material and apparatus
* Procedure
* Observations
asid. Huraian anda mesti disertakan
* senarai bahan dan radas
*prosedur
*pemerhatian. [ 10 marks]

Jawapan
1

(a)

Set I : CaCO3 + 2HCI

CaCI2 + CO2 + H2O

Set II : CaCO3 + 2CH3COOH

(b)

( CH3COO)2Ca + CO2 + H2O

Effervescence occurs and more bubble gas release in set I than set II.
In set I, hydrochloric acid is a strong acid. Hydrochloric acid ionizes completely in
water to form high concentration of hydrogen ion.
In set II, ethanoic acid is a weak acid. Ethanoic acid ionizes partially in water to form
low concentration of hydrogen ion.
The concentration of hydrogen ion in set I is higher.
Thus, the reaction between calcium carbonate and hydrochloric in set I is more
reactive

(c)

Carbon dioxide gas.

Bubble carbon dioxide gas into lime water using delivery tube.
Limewater turns chalky

(d)

Material and apparatus

Test tube, test tube holder, delivery tube with stopper , measuring cylinder , spatula ,
calcium carbonate, substance X and substance Y [1+1 marks]
Procedure
1. About 5 cm3 of substance X is poured into a test tube.
2. A spatula of calcium carbonate powder is added to substance X.
3. The gas released is bubbles through lime water using delivery tube.
4. Any changes that occur are recorded.
5. Repeat step 1 to 4 by using substance Y.
[ 5 marks]
Observation
Substance X

Observation
Calcium carbonate dissolves to form colourless solution.
Effervescence occurs .
Gas released turns limewater milky.

Substance Y
No change
Substance X is an acid
