allowed to compete. Failure to make satisfactory improvements / corrections will result in the team being
judged ineligible to compete in FSI.
- C Rated Car: The FSI Judges find the car needs extensive redesign and/or remanufacturing in order to meet
the minimum standard of good engineering workmanship and safety. The car will be judged as potentially
ineligible to compete in FSI. Within 10 days of video / photo submission, the team will be sent a list of required
improvements (in the form of a prioritized checklist, complete with suggested solutions). The team will have
the opportunity to resubmit the required video / photographic submissions by 15/12/2014. Within 10 days of
re-submission of video / photographic documentation, the team will be notified if their car passed, and is now
judged as a B car, or didnt pass, and is judged ineligible to compete at FSI.
- If, after re-submission, a C car is judged to pass, and is now considered a B car, the team will be notified.
All items on the FSI Judge checklist will be inspected at the FSI event site prior to Tech Inspection. If the team
made satisfactory improvements / corrections, to all items, they will be allowed to compete. Failure to make
satisfactory improvements / corrections will result in the team being judged ineligible to compete in FSI.

7.3

Points Penalty

If a team is promoted from being a C car to a B car after resubmitting the running car video, they will be
allowed to compete. However, they will be penalized 50 points from overall points scored at FSI.
7.4

Ineligibility

If a team fails to make the required improvements / corrections, the car will be judged ineligible to compete at
FSI, and that teams spot will be offered to the next team on the Wait List. However, the team is still allowed
(and strongly encouraged) to come to FSI with their car and speak with Design Judges and receive advice and
insight on how to improve their next years car, and enjoy the FSI atmosphere of learning and competing.
7.5

File Formats

All photos must be 1366 X 788 pixels, in size. File naming convention is as follows:
CarNumber_TeamName_IMG_ImageNumber.jpg. (69_Team_Tiger_IMG_34.jpg) Please use the numbering
format listed above for all photos. (Example: The number 34 photo is will always be the cockpit seat.) All
photos are to be sent in a zipped folder named as follows: TeamNumber_TeamName (69_Team_Tiger). The
Dropbox / Google Drive link of this folder must be submitted, along with the YouTube link ( on the teams
YouTube Channel) of the running car video to: info@FormulaStudent.in by 0000 Hours IST on 5th October,
2015.
Any additional documentation needs to be in .pdf format and in the form of a report. Submission of files which
require specific software to open and view the files will be treated as non-submissions.
Please Note:
Late submission will be treated as non-submission. Non-submission will result in teams being judged
ineligible to compete at FSI.

Submissions not adhering to guidelines (File Name Convention / Maximum file size limit / poor
resolution / incomplete submission) will be treated as a non-submission. Non-submission will result in
teams being judged ineligible to compete at FSI.

Teams who submit video & photos well ahead of the deadline will have more time to make corrections
on their car. All teams are strongly encouraged to send the required video / photo submissions as soon

as possible. (Sharp teams will take advantage of the huge advantage to having feedback ahead of the
competition.)

If a team is judged ineligible, it means they will not be allowed to submit their car for Tech Inspection,
or participate in any Static or Dynamic events. However, they are still strongly encouraged to bring
their car and visit FSI, in order to gain feedback for future years.

7.6 Re-inspection of Corrections Checklist

Inspection of B (& C cars which re-submitted videos, and were then promoted to B status), to ensure
compliance with all items on the corrections checklist will be held at the competition site, outside the Tech
Inspection area and prior to Tech Inspection. The B car teams need to satisfy the FSI Judges that they have
indeed made all the corrections pointed out in the feedback checklist. This inspection will be carried out by
Claude Rouelle, Steve Fox, Pat Clarke (Chief Design Judges for FSI) with assistance from the Chief Scrutineer
and/or other Design Judges. Teams with A cars will be given priority time slots for Tech Inspection, over
teams with B cars.

7.7

Summary

The focus of the Running Car Video requirement is to allow competitors to be better prepared for the FSI
competition when they arrive on-site, while ensuring that every team has a strong chance of quickly and easily
passing Tech Inspection. It is also a chance to identify weak teams in order to allow Wait List teams a chance
to compete. For too many years we have seen students come to Formula SAE/FS competitions world-wide,
only to either quickly break their car due to lack of testing, or spend all weekend thrashing on their car in a
failed last ditch attempt to get it running.
Shrewd FSI student competitors will easily see the benefit of essentially having their car previewed by the FSI
Design Judges ahead of the competition and then implementing the suggested improvements

Vehicle Requirements and Restrictions

8.1 Impact Attenuator

Quasi-static testing is not allowed. Only dynamic tests (drop down, sledge or pendulum test) are allowed.
On all cars, a 1.5mm solid steel or 4.0 mm solid aluminium anti intrusion-plate must be integrated into the
Impact Attenuator. Alternative materials are prohibited. The anti intrusion plate must be installed at the test
and must show that the maximum deflection is not more than 25.4mm. A simulation of the deflection is not
sufficient. The crashed specimen must be made available to the technical inspectors at the event site.
8.2 Engine Lubrication System
The lowest point of the engine lubrication system must be no lower as the line between the lowest point of
the main roll hoop and the lowest frame rail behind the engine and/or lubrication system. If the engine oil
sump or any other part of the lubrication system is lower than this line (figure 1), it must be protected by a
sufficient skid plate, or frame tubes installed longitudinally under affected part of the engine lubrication
system.

The engine lubrication system must be protected from surface contact in any situation while in operation on
track, especially in the event of a suspension failure. The skid plate itself cannot be mounted to parts of the
engine

8.3 Fuel System

The use of fuel rails made from plastic, carbon fibre or rapid prototyping flammable materials is prohibited.
The use of OEM Fuel Rails is acceptable.
Hose clamps over metal braided hose will not be accepted.
If rubber fuel line or hose is used, the components over which the hose is clamped must have annular bulb or
barbed fittings to retain the hose. Also, clamps specifically designed for fuel lines must be used. These clamps
have three (3) important features, (i) a full 360 degree (360) wrap, (ii) a nut and bolt system for tightening,
and (iii) rolled edges to prevent the clamp cutting into the hose. Worm-gear type hose clamps are not
approved for use on any fuel line.

Figure 3: Fuel hose clamp permitted to be used on rubber fuel

lines

Figure 2: This type of hose clamp is not permitted on fuel

lines.

Datasheet should be provided for any adhesive/sealant used anywhere in the Fuel System.

8.4 Drivers Underclothing

It is mandatory that all competitors wear fire resistant underwear (long pants and long sleeve t-shirt) certified
to SFI 3.3 or FIA 8856-2000 under their approved driving suit. Underclothing shall cover the body from the neck
to the ankles and wrists. The garment shall be snugly fitting at the neck, ankles and wrists. It can be a onepiece garment or a two-piece, consisting of a top and pants.
T-shirts, socks or other undergarments (not to be confused with FR underwear) made from nylon or any other
synthetic material which will melt when exposed to high heat are prohibited.
8.5 Brake System
Self designed and/or manufactured brake disks are only permitted if the team presents proper documentation
for the same (calculation, simulation, picture of the process, invoices).
Nylon lock nuts do not qualify as positive locking mechanism for the Brake System (nylon could fail
approximately 80 degrees Celsius or above)
8.6 Quick Jack and Push-Pull Bar
The teams must present their Push Bar and Quick Jack at the time of Technical Inspection. Sharing of Push Bar
and Quick Jack between teams is not permitted.
8.7 Welding
Arc welding is not accepted on any critical structural component. Only form of welding which is allowed at
critical structural components is MIG or TIG. Please consult the rules committee to inquire about any other
form of welding.

Grinding of welded joints in not permitted.

Paint and/or powder coating is the only work allowed on welded joints.
Teams MUST submit weld samples for weld penetration.

A "critical structural component" is defined as any component which if fails would injure the driver, tech
inspector, course marshal or engineer near the vehicle.

8.8 Firewall
Firewall must be made of metal, no fabric, foams or lamination.

Technical Inspection

9.1 Inspection Stickers

Tech Inspectors will mark or seal various different approved parts (i.e. air restrictor). The car can be
disqualified from any dynamic event by using, or substituting unmarked parts. Parts with broken seals are
equivalent to being unmarked.
9.2 Car Weighing
All cars will be weighed prior to Engineering Design Judging. All cars are to be weighed in ready to race
condition. The fuel tank must be filled to the fuel level line. All lubricants and coolants must be in the car. This
weight will be the cars Official Technical Inspection weight. There will be a penalty if the car weight changes
during Dynamic Competition. The allowable weight tolerance is 5.0 kg. In the case of overweight or
underweight in comparison to the Technical Inspection weight, the team will be penalized -20 (twenty) points
for each kg (or portion of a kg) of additional or missing weight. This point penalty will be deducted from the
Engineering Design Event score. (Each 0.1 to 1.0 kg = -20 points)
9.3 Inspection Holes
To allow the verification of tubing wall thicknesses, 4.5 mm (0.18 inch) inspection holes must be drilled in a
non-critical location of both the Main Hoop and the Front Hoop. In addition, the Technical Inspectors may
check the compliance of other tubes that have minimum dimensions specified. This may be done by the use of
ultra sonic testing or by the drilling of additional inspection holes at the inspectors request. Inspection holes
must be located such that the outside diameter can be measured ACROSS the inspection hole with a Vernier
caliper, i.e. there must be access for the Vernier Caliper to the inspection hole and to the outside of the tube
one hundred eighty degrees (180) from the inspection hole.

9.4 Bodywork
The team should design the Bodywork of the car in such a way that it takes no more than 5 minutes to remove
the body (Nose, Sidepods, Side Panels etc.) from the vehicle when presented in race ready condition.
9.5 Inspection Condition
Vehicles must be presented for technical inspection in finished condition, i.e. fully assembled, complete and
ready-to-run. Technical inspectors will not inspect any vehicle presented for inspection in an unfinished state.
Presenting a vehicle for Technical Inspection constitutes a declaration by the team that they have determined
by self-inspection that the vehicle complies with the Rules.
9.6 Brake Test
The brake system will be dynamically tested and must demonstrate the capability of locking all four (4) wheels
and stopping the vehicle in a straight line at the end of an acceleration run specified by the brake inspectors.
To pass the brake test the vehicle should come to a stop solely by the application of brakes, if the vehicle stops
due to any other reason like engine shut down, the vehicle will not be considered to have passed the brake
test.

10 Pit Rules
10.1 Engine Running
Running of engines is not allowed in the pits or the garage areas. There is a designated, supervised, engine
running area for this purpose. Engine must be started in the designated engine running area only.
10.2 Car Movement at the Event
