Understanding the Eyespeak Software.

In this modern world, most people use technology to make their work or study
easier than before by self-doing or automating it. They, for instance, prefer to go for the
Internet rather than books. In like manner, a great deal of students chooses technology

as a second platform for gaining knowledge such as software, smartphone and personal
computer. Thus, this fact leads Linguaphone Group invested their recent methodology
of teaching and learning languages. They are committed to servicing the language need
of Malaysian such as English and Chinese (Linguaphone, 2005). In Malaysia, self-study
courses have been widely promoted by the government. In the last few years,
Linguaphone took the challenge and introduced Eyespeak software to the Malaysian in
their self-study courses. To understand how it works, it is necessary to understand what
are the features included, how to use it, how it helps the self-learners and what its
advantages are.
First of all, The Multimedia Eyespeak course is a combination with Multimedia
English course with unique Eyespeak software which is easily to understand and
handle. This software is usually provided in round, flat, portable metal disc with a plastic
coating; either in CD or VCD. This application software designed to make users more
productive and assist them with personal tasks. However, it has to be installed in order
to work with other hardware, for example like microphone. With the Speech Recognition
capabilities, it invented to recognise the students voices especially in pronunciations
and tones. In addition, it also has a visual graphic representation which is give the hint
to the learners about their mistakes, timing and words. The students can choose the
activities and the level to test themselves. Once it installed, use the audio output device
to hear such as headphone or earbuds. But, the best opt is to use the headphone
attached with the microphone.
Secondly, Eyespeak software is easy to handle with simple layouts and buttons.
To use the full version of the program, the students have to insert the program disc in an
optical disc drive and follow the instruction. Once installed, you can run the program or
software since it already transferred to your hard disk. Then, take a look and refers to
the Course Books, select an activity which is suitable for your level and hear the
teachers voice, record your own, play back and compare yours with the teacher
pronunciation of the words. These simple steps make you easily familiar with the
program and facing less difficulty.
Besides, the software will able to analyse the learners voice along four
parameters; pronunciation, pitch, timing and loudness. It will give scores on each
aspect. The most interesting part is this software; it also will teach you how to
pronounce the words given. The provided diagram of the mouth will show the placement
of the lips and tough on the palate in order to achieve the correct pronunciations. These
features will help the learners to start a good habit in pronunciation, the way to read the
sentences and understand the meaning of the words. So, the Eyespeak software

reinforces this curriculum, by adding the dimension of voice and accent training, ideas
for improvement, evaluation, and with scoring.
Lastly, there advantages of the software such as a placement tests where the
students are able to assess their level of spoken English before start the course. This
will give the learner to set their target in order to complete the course. Next, they can
compare their voices with that of the teacher with the recording in form of waveform. So,
this is a quick feedback for them in their spoken English. They will easily understand the
meaning of the words will the helps of role plays and a full English dictionary of over
2300 words. Likewise, it will give a progress report for you to see the improvement or
vice versa of your own.
In conclusion, the learner must understand the features included such as the
speech recognition, the way to use it for instance; installed into the computer, the
method that helps the self-learners which is providing the Course Book for them and the
advantages like the software will able to analyse the learners voice along four
parameters, teach you how to pronounce the words given and provide diagram of the
mouths movement. They have to know all of these in order to be familiar and get the
most of the Eyespeak program. Perhaps, this software can start to be used in
classroom and become one part of curriculum in the school. Thus, teachers can also
use this software with their students.
