A long-term goal is getting closer for Evesham Township and the

residents of the Inglis Gardens
independent housing complex for
the physically disabled.
At the May 24 meeting of the
Evesham Township Council, officials gave an update on the work
in recent months to help Inglis
residents in their quest to see a
sidewalk built on the east side of
North Elmwood Road from the Inglis complex toward the churches
and businesses closer to Evesboro-Medford Road.
In April 2015, residents of Inglis
Gardens, some of whom are blind
or bound to a wheelchair, came before council with their stories of
routinely risking their lives when
dealing with traffic while trying

with Meritorious Service Award
New Jersey Natural Gas employee and Marlton resident Ed
Jones, along with several coworkers, was recognized by the American Gas Association with the 2016
Meritorious Service Award. This
award honors natural gas industry employees who demonstrate
exceptional judgment and bravery in saving human life.
Responding to a natural gas
leak on Feb. 24, American Gas Association officials said Jones and

his coworkers displayed incredible courage and character in an

extremely difficult situation,
never once thinking about their
own well-being, to manage the
scene and ensure the safety of
those around them.
Jones, along with his coworkers, recently accepted the American Gas Associations 2016 Meritorious Service Award for their

Would legalizing pot be good?

Too many unknowns exist for us to agree to that
he taboo that hovered over
marijuana for years is rapidly
evaporating into a puff of
white smoke. Gone are the Reefer
Madness days with the belief that
marijuana does significant harm to a
persons body. Gone, too, seems to be
the belief that marijuana is a gateway to more serious drugs.
Across the country, marijuana laws
have loosened from legal medical
marijuana in states such as New Jersey to the decriminalization of it in
Philadelphia to the full legalization of
it for recreational use in states such as
Colorado.
Pot is now more of a socially-accepted practice, and its becoming a big
business one that advocates for its
legalization in New Jersey say could
reap $300 million in sales tax revenue
per year.
A joint report released by the New
Jersey United Marijuana Reform and
New Jersey Policy Perspective said almost 370,000 people in New Jersey 21
and older use marijuana illegally on a

The report estimates that if New
Jersey were to legalize pot, control its
sale like that of alcohol and tax it at 25
percent, that could result in quite the
boost to the states economy.
Representatives from the group and
other weed advocates say its time for
the full legalization. Gov. Christie has
said for a long time that he will not be
the governor to sign such a bill into
law, but he leaves office after next year.
Starting in 2018, then, its at least a
possibility that legalized marijuana
for recreational use will come up for a
vote in the Legislature.

Were glad that discussion is most

likely two years away, because we
dont feel theres enough solid information on the effects of legalized marijuana to say the money is worth it.
At the forefront of this lack of information, for us, is the absence of clear
knowledge of the effect of legalizing
pot on impaired driving. Colorado, for
example, handles stoned driving as
a DUI, no different than being under
the influence of alcohol. But there are
no field tests to see whether a driver is
stoned, and blood tests only say the pot
was in a persons system recently, not
necessarily at the time he or she was
driving.
There are plenty of other concerns,
too, such as the long-term effects of
prolonged use of marijuana, whether
its something we should be promoting
and whether were legalizing it just for
the windfall of cash.
Theres a lot to think about, a lot to
study and a lot to discuss.
Were just glad we wont have to do
that soon.

Police: Nanny accused of stealing $15K in cash, jewelry

The following reports are on file with the
Evesham Police Department:
The nanny for an Evesham family is accused of stealing $15,000 in cash
and jewelry from her employer.
The resident contacted the
Evesham Police Department on
May 20 and reported that he believed his nanny, a 25-year-old of
Mt. Laurel, had stolen cash and jewelry
from his residence between February and
May.

The investigating officer located pictures

of the nanny on her Facebook account
wearing many of the victims wifes stolen
items. The officer also responded to nearby
establishments that buy gold
and located numerous pawning
transactions of the suspect selling the victims jewelry.
The nanny was charged with
second-degree theft. She was released after her $5,000 bail was posted.

Golf tournament returns July 19

Tournament raises funds for LRHSD scholarships in honor
of former superintendent Kereazis Kiki Konstantinos

Former Lenape Regional High
School District superintendent
Kereazis Kiki Konstantinos was
known by district students and
staff for his dedication to fostering excellence in education.
More than 40,000 students received education under Konstantinos tenure as superintendent
from 1963 through his retirement
in 1993, and the district saw its
schools grow from one to three.
Although Konstantinos passed
away in 2002 at age 74, education
is still promoted in his name to
this day through scholarships
awarded to district students every
year by the K. Kiki Konstantinos
Scholarship Foundation.
However, foundation chair

do it alone, so hes once again
inviting members of the public to
attend the foundations 24th annual Kiki Open Scholarship Golf
Tournament fundraiser on Tuesday, July 19 at the Medford Lakes
Country Club in Medford Lakes.
Mr. Konstantinos, Kiki as he
was known, was the architect and
the vision for what we have here
today, Zeuli said. Theres thousands and thousands of students
that have been benefited from his
planning and his enthusiasm and
his instruction.
According Zeuli, rather than
honor Konstantinos with a token
such as a gold watch upon his retirement, a group of community
members chose to establish a
foundation bearing Konstantinos
name to provide scholarships to

went on and Seneca High School
was added to the district, the
foundation eventually grew to offering four scholarships to each of
the districts four schools.
The standards used to award
the scholarships are also in-line
with those set by Konstantinos
himself, who during his time as
superintendent saw the district
maintain excellence in academics, sports and student activities.
Scholarship winners exhibit
strength in all three of those
areas, and, according to Zeuli,
with the money collected so far
this year, the foundation has
raised more than $450,000 for its
scholarships since it began.
However, as Zeuli points out,

the annual golf tournament on

July 19 is the foundations one
and only fundraising event for
the entire year, so Zeuli is inviting
all those interested in promoting
education in the district to sign
up.
We have all of these scholarships, one fundraising event,
Zeuli said.
Zeuli said this year the foundation will also be funding one additional scholarship in honor of
former foundation member and
former LRHSD board member
Earl Siegman, who passed away
in August of last year.
He, like Kiki, was a true architect of many of the things that
went on in this district, Zeuli
said. He was a board member for
many years as well as a great
community servant.
Those interested in supporting
the foundation through the golf
tournament can sign up for a full
day of activities for $210, which
includes the golf outing, a luncheon buffet and the dinner and
awards ceremony. Those looking
to help the foundation but stay off
the green can sign up for just
cocktails and dinner for $95.
For those looking to give more,
multiple sponsorship opportunities ranging from $125 to $5,500

without a sidewalk.
At the time, council was sympathetic to the residents pleas,
but as township manager Tom Czerniecki pointed out, it was the
states land usage rules rather
than cost that had previously prohibited council from installing a
sidewalk on that specific section
of the road.
Czerniecki told residents council had tried to secure a grant to
build a sidewalk about five years
prior, but the land where the sidewalk would go was unworkable,
as the state had delineated it as
wetlands and the state historical
preservation had also marked the
land as a Native American burial
ground.
Fast-forward a year, and now
many of those obstacles have
been removed.
According to Czerniecki, the
township recently sent a letter on
behalf of council to all members
of the Inglis House informing
them that permits would soon be
in place to allow a sidewalk to be
built along a significant portion
of North Elmwood Road.
Czerniecki said wetlands and
archaeological issues had been
the basis for the denial of a sidewalk grant that Inglis Gardens

had previously applied for, but

with those issues now out of the
way, Czerniecki said the township
had invited Inglis representatives
to start working with the township on the next round of grants.
According to Czerniecki, the
entire length of North Elmwood
Road has still not been permitted,
as some of it is definitively wetlands toward the roads end, and
theres no getting around that,
but permits will allow for a sidewalk along the initial segment of
the road toward the Tanglewood
Development and Ross Way.
That was quite a lift, and it
took some diplomatic work
amongst the engineers, Czerniecki said.
In other news:
Council has officially introduced the 2016 municipal budget.
As outlined at councils earlier
meeting in May, the budget will
present residents with another
year of decreasing municipal
taxes.
Municipal taxes previously
went down in 2014 and 2015, and
for 2016, officials expect taxes to
decrease for the average Evesham
homeowner by about $6 per year.
June 21 is set as the date for the
public hearing and final adoption
of the budget.
At that meeting, officials will
give a more in-depth breakdown
of the budget, and members of
the public will have a chance to
comment.

On May 15 at 5 a.m., an Evesham Officer conducting enforcement in the townships Data Driven Approach to Crime and Traffic
Safety zone stopped an unregistered vehicle on Route 73.
During the investigation of the
stop, the driver was arrested after
the officer observed narcotic
paraphernalia in plain view.
A subsequent search of the vehicle by officers resulted in the
discovery of 11 bags of crack cocaine. DDACTS is a crime and
traffic analysis program developed by the National Highway
Traffic and Safety Administration.
A male, age 44, of Lakewood,
was charged with third-degree
possession of crack cocaine and a
disorderly persons offense for
possession of drug paraphernalia.
During the early morning
hours of Saturday, May 14, unknown suspects broke into numerous vehicles on Knightswood
Drive, Kennibie Drive, Kirkdale
Drive, Knowlton Drive and South
Elmwood Road. The suspects
gained entry by entering unlocked vehicles and smashing out
the rear windows of locked vehicles.
A witness described seeing a
suspicious male and female walking in the area at 4:30 a.m. The
male is described as being in his
early 20s wearing a dark hooded
jacket. The female is described as
being a thin build female in her
early 20s, wearing dark clothing
with medium length brunette
hair.

On May 10, through a cooperative investigation with the FBI,
the Evesham Police Department
identified and arrested a Berlin
man suspected of robbing the
Evesham Citizens Bank on April
29 and BB&T Bank on May 3.
The break in the case came

when one of the departments

Facebook followers was viewing a
bank surveillance video posted to
the Evesham Police Facebook
page and recognized the male as a
co-worker. Arrested: A male, age
24, of Berlin, was charged with
two counts of second-degree robbery. He was lodged in the
Burlington County Jail in default
of $150,000 bail.
On May 9 at 9 a.m., an officer
patrolling inside the DDACTS
Zone conducted a motor vehicle
stop on Route 70. During the investigation, Evesham Police K-9
Ciko was called upon to assist officers with the detection of narcotics. Ciko was walked around
the exterior of the suspects vehicle, at which time he alerted officers to the presence of narcotics
inside the car. A subsequent
search of the vehicle by officers
resulted in the discovery of
methamphetamines and drug
paraphernalia.
A male, age 34, of Somerdale,
was charged with third-degree
possession of methamphetamine,
a disorderly persons offense for
drug paraphernalia and DWI.
On May 3 at 7:56 p.m., an Evesham officer was patrolling in the
DDACTS Zone when he observed
a pickup truck that matched the
description of a vehicle driven by
three suspects who had stolen a
womens purse from her shopping cart five days earlier in the
Evesham Target store. The officer
stopped the vehicle as it was returning to the Target store.
During the investigation, the
officer was able to identify the occupants from surveillance video
as being the trio who stole the
womens purse on April 28. All
three were arrested.

age
42,
of
Williamstown, was charged with
third-degree theft. She was released on her own recognizance.
A
male,
age
26,
of
Williamstown, was charged with
third-degree theft. He was released on her own recognizance.
A female, age 25, of Newfield,
was charged with third-degree
theft and a disorderly persons offense for possession of drug paraphernalia.

McShane receives NSLI-Y scholarship

to study Russian in Moldova this summer
Michael McShane, a junior at
Cherokee High School, has been
awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth scholarship for 2016-17. McShane will
study Russian in Moldova for the
summer. Aside from studying
both Russian and Spanish at
school, he is also the president of
the class of 2017, treasurer of
Cherokees Student Council, a
member of the National Honor
Society, Slavic Honor Society,
Spanish Honor Society and participates in the track and field
program.
McShane is one of only approximately 600 competitively selected
students from across the United
States who will receive a scholarship to study Arabic, Chinese,
Hindi, Korean, Persian, Russian

or Turkish overseas this year.

While in Moldova, McShane will
receive formal instruction and informal language practice in an
immersion environment.
The NSLI-Y program seeks to
increase the number of Americans who can engage with native
speakers of critical languages.
The goals of the NSLI-Y program
include sparking a life-long interest in foreign languages and cultures, and developing a corps of
young Americans with the skills
necessary to advance international dialogue and cross-cultural opportunities in the private, academic and government sectors.

with AFS-USA, American Cultur-
