DELPHOS — A Delphos man and his accomplice plot-

ted to steal a former coal executive’s SUV in a plot that
ended in the death of Bennett K. Hatfield, 59, on Sunday,
according to officials.
Anthony Arriaga,20, of Delphos, one of the suspects in
Hatfield’s death, was arraigned on a first-degree murder
charge Thursday in Mingo County Circuit Court. He was
ordered held without bond pending a June 3 preliminary
hearing.
Hatfield was shot to death Monday in Mountain View
Memory Gardens, a cemetery in southern West Virginia’s
Mingo County. Hatfield was visiting the grave site of his
late wife, who died of cancer.

City receives $97,000 rebate from AEP Ohio

DELPHOS — The City of Delphos

put nearly $100,000 back in its pocket
this week after receiving a rebate from
AEP Ohio.
The $97,312 windfall is from the
restructuring of the wastewater treat-
ment plant during the pilot project to
test new technology.

percent more efficient in energy use.
AEP Ohio numbers show the plant is
now 60 percent more efficient than
before the pilot project began. In 2014,
the plant cost $600,000 in electricity
to run.

A Visit with Art Grothouse 94Wise …
Art Grothouse is a World War II Veteran
having served with Kelley’s Kobras 494th of
the United States Air Force. A 1939 graduate
of Delphos St. John’s, Art went to work right
out of high school at Delphos Manufacturing
and after being laid off, eventually found
work at the Delphos Bending Company in
September 1940. He would spend 47 years
working for Delphos Bending/Orbitron, retir-
ing in 1987.
Art recalled his military service days vivid-
ly beginning with the attack on Pearl Harbor
on Dec. 7, 1941. Soon after, he and a number
of fired up buddies would look to join the Air
Force. Art said he would have surely been
drafted in the year or two following December
1941 but to get into the Air Force, he would
need to enlist and so he did.
His military service would take him from
the Columbus swearing-in to the first grad-
uating class of airplane mechanics from the
newly established school in Wichita Falls,
Texas. It was onto B24 specialist training in
San Diego where Art learned everything there
was to know about maintaining this critical
strategic bomber. Next stop was Anchorage,
Alaska servicing the B24 in the campaign of
the Aleutian Islands with Art serving most
of his time far from the mainland near the
Aleutian Island of Kiska (nearly 14 months
in all). He then returned stateside for further
training in Idaho before it was out to Hawaii
(Angar) supporting bombing groups there and
then in the Philippines campaign. His final
stop was Okinawa where preparations were
underway for the invasion of mainland Japan.
The atomic bombs of August 6th (Hiroshima)
and August 9th (Nagasaki) 1945 ended any
need for invading mainland Japan.
Art recalled the euphoria of learning ‘the
war is over news” saying that “every gun on
the island that could fire was shot off, it was
the biggest fireworks I’ve ever seen”. His
group returned to Portland, Oregon and even-
tually got back to good old Delphos. While
home on a 15-day furlough, right after the
war, Art recalled the glee of meeting up with
friend and fellow furlougher Ed Clark, and
seeing Fr. Herr who gave them “a handful of
gas stamps and his car to use while they were
home”. Good Stuff!

Sports Moment: “Keeping score (20
year scorekeeper) at the State Basketball
Tournament when my son (Dan) played on the
team.” (The memorable 1973 St John’s state
runner-up run)
Favorite president: “FDR was a great
guy, he got things going after Pearl Harbor.
I liked Kennedy, but he didn’t get a chance
even after all he did do.”
If I had a magic wand and could fix one
thing in this world I’d… “I would like to
see why the Democrats and Republicans can
never get together on anything. How’s come
they can’t get together and do something for
the people?”
Advice to young people: “Keep on the
straight and narrow and avoid the troubling
stuff.”
Art continues to enjoy a wonderful life
with his wife Mary (Ricker) whom he married
in June of 1947. They will celebrate their 69th
wedding anniversary this coming June, yes,
69 years! Congrats! Thanks Art.

Twelve-year-old daughter’s
birthday stirs memories of
seven-day hospital stay

This day is going way too fast
for me. I finished sewing daughter
Susan’s cape and apron for the wed-
ding of niece Lovina and Benjamin
tomorrow. Susan had her dress
almost done so I also finished sew-
ing that.
Last night I finally finished my
dress, cape, and apron. I will be
cook at the wedding and was asked
to wear smoke blue. Susan and her
friend Mose will be table waiters and
Susan has to wear periwinkle. None
of us had a color like that so it meant
more sewing. With Susan working
at the factory and training her pony
in the evenings, she had a hard time
getting to her sewing. And we can all
guess which job was more interesting
and important to her. She’s a fan of
being outdoors.
Today, May 18, daughter Lovina is
12 years old. She brought her friend
Marianna home with her from school
last night. They enjoyed each other’s
company. Lovina got up earlier than
usual so she could pop some popcorn
to treat her classmates. Her class-
mates like the sour cream and cheddar
popcorn she makes.
This morning while sewing, my
thoughts traveled back to Lovina’s
birth 12 years ago. We had moved in
March and were still not unpacked.
Sister Emma and Jacob were in the
process of getting ready for a public
auction on their property in Berne,
Indiana. Life was not very settled
yet after moving a family of eight to
Michigan. I had been having trouble
with gall bladder attacks and ended
up having Lovina three weeks early
by emergency C-section.
Due to complications I was in the
hospital for seven days. I spent my
birthday in ICU and wasn’t allowed

ten at that time. My doctor was think-
ing of sending me to a bigger hospi-
tal, but I took a turn for better and
was transferred out of ICU the last
few days.
I had our first six children at
home with Joe’s Aunt Sylvia as my
midwife. This was so different to not
have all the family together as soon as
the baby was born. It was hard not to
see my baby for those few days, but
I was so sick I didn’t really feel up
to anything. Seven weeks later I had
my gall bladder removed and felt so
much better. Lovina has grown into a
sweet young girl. She does very well
in school and loves to read and write.
She is outside helping Susan with
her ponies every chance she gets.
Washing dishes is probably her least
favorite thing to do.
I am more than blessed with the fam-
ily I have. They made me feel so loved
on Mother’s Day. I was given flowers,
and lots of thoughtful gifts from Joe
and the children. My sister Emma and
her husband Jacob had council meeting
(which our churches have prior to com-
munion) on Mother’s Day. Everyone
was treated to ice cream in honor of all
the mothers there. What a thoughtful
and kind deed!
Our asparagus crop is slowly dying
off. Joe picked a few radishes from
the garden last night. Usually I beat

Asparagus with
Homemade Cheese Sauce
2 cups fresh asparagus, chopped
to 1-2 inch pieces
1 1/2 cups milk
seasonings to taste
3/4 cup soft cheese, cut-up
Thickening:
2 tablespoons cornstarch
4 tablespoons water
Mix together.
Cook fresh asparagus just until
tender. Add milk, then add seasoning
to taste. When hot, add soft cheese.
When cheese is melted, stir in the
thickening. Vary thickness by using
more or less cheese.

Grilled Ribeye (Rib) Pork Chops
with Easy Spicy BBQ Sauce
Ingredients:
4 ribeye (rib) pork chops, about 1-inch thick
Salt and pepper, to taste
Olive oil, for brushing grill grate
Just in time for grill season.
Spicy BBQ Sauce
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/2 yellow onion, chopped
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Chive Mashed Potatoes
3 russet potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1-inch
cubes
2 tablespoons chives, chopped
3 tablespoons heavy cream
Cooking Directions:
Preheat the grill over medium high heat and brush
with olive oil. Season the chops with a generous amount
of salt and pepper on both sides.
Place pork on the grill for 8-9 minutes, turning once
halfway through, until cooked to an internal tempera-
ture of 145 degrees F. Remove pork from the grill, tent
it with foil; let it rest for 3 minutes.
To make the mashed potatoes, add potatoes to a pot
with water, over high heat and boil for 15 minutes.
Drain the water and add the heavy cream. Mash the
potatoes until smooth. Stir in the chopped chives, salt
and pepper.
To make the Spicy BBQ Sauce, heat the oil in a pot
over medium heat. Sauté the onion until soft and add
ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire, vinegar, and cay-
enne. Simmer for 15 minutes so the sauce thickens and
turn off heat. Once cooled, puree the sauce in a blender.
Serve the chops alongside the potatoes and a spoon-
ful of BBQ sauce.
4 servings (1 serving: 1 chop, 1/2 cup mashed pota-
toes and 2 tablespoons sauce)

Rhubarb is ready and so is the spear-

better once it warms up outside.
We had a few snow flurries Sunday
forenoon on May 15. I don’t remem-
ber seeing that in May. Sunday we
were at sisters’ Verena and Susan for
a delicious meal in honor of Susan’s
fortieth birthday which was May 10.

The delayed planting this spring has allowed many

weeds to survive longer and get larger compared to other
growing seasons. At this time, some fields have weeds
with striking yellow flowers. In fact, some of these
fields have so many yellowed-flowered weeds that it
resembles a new crop in the area. Agronomists call this
yellowed-flowered plant cressleaf groundsel because the
leaves resemble those of garden cress and watercress.
Butterweed is another common name as well as yellow-
top, golden ragwort, and yellow ragwort. While it is most
often found in no-till corn and soybean fields that have not
yet been treated with burndown herbicides, there seems
to be an above-average number of wheat, hayfields and
pastures with substantial populations.
Cressleaf groundsel can be identified by its hollow and
grooved stem with a purplish color, and yellow sunflow-
er-type flowers. It is a winter annual that emerges in late
summer into fall, and can infest late-summer seedings of
forages and hay and fall seedings of wheat. It can be con-
trolled with herbicides in most crops, ideally in the fall or
early spring when plants are small and most susceptible
to herbicides.
Groundsel belongs to the Aster/Composite family,
which includes dandelions and sunflowers. Some people
may mistake groundsel as wild mustard, such as yellow
rocket, but mustards plants are in the old taxonomy fam-
ily of Cruciferae because their flowers are four petals in
a cross shape. Flowers in the aster family are daisy-like
and seed heads look like miniature dandelion puff-balls.
Cressleaf grounds emerges in the fall and overwinters
as a rosette of leaves. Often these leaves will be deep pur-
ple on the underneath side. In the spring, the main stem
will elongate and produce flowers at the end of branches
and the top of the main stem. Groundsel reproduces only
from seeds. However, it is a heavy seed producer and each
plant may produce hundreds of seeds that are blown by
the wind, like dandelions. The seeds can remain viable in

TROY — Set the pace.
Two area track and field athletes did
exactly that by taking individual titles
during Wednesday’s field-event finals
at the Division III Regional Track and
Field Championships at Memorial Field
at Troy High School.
Ottoville junior Brooke Mangas set
a meet record of 5-7 (and barely missed
on the state mark of 5-9) to grab the
girls high jump, while Spencerville
senior Evan Pugh claimed the boys dis-
cus throw with a mark of 151-4.
No matter how successful Mangas is
in this particular event — she is defend-
ing her 2015 state title and finished
ninth at State as a freshman — she has
a down-to-earth approach.
“You can’t take any jump not seri-
ously. You have to stay focused for
every jump because you never know;
you could have an injury or a bad day
and you’re done,” she said. “You have
to get better at every step and every-
thing you do. You can’t look ahead at
all because the competition is too good
to take for granted. It becomes easier to
stay grounded and keep working hard
because of that.”

week, putting him sixth coming in.
“This wasn’t my personal best, but
it was my best this year. I hadn’t been
throwing consistently well this year
but this is the most important meet of
the year besides last week; you have to
move on from there and then move on
from here,” Pugh said. “My PR is 156
feet last year, so I know I have more I
can give. You always have something
you can improve because any thrower
will tell you there are 30 things you can
always improve.
“My focus is now on the shot put
Friday; that’s the only thing I’m wor-
ried about and until that’s done, that
is my favorite event. The pressure is
definitely off me right now because of
today, though.”

(8:20.3).
“We’re going to State! We’re going
to State!” said Maag after a tremendous
anchor leg rallied the Musketeers into
the third-place finish.
“It’s always been a dream to get
there but we hadn’t realized it yet until
now,” Wiechart said.
“We haven’t had a lot of time togeth-
er because of the early meets that were
cancelled; we’re still coming together,”
Grone said. “This was our team-best
mark today by 10 seconds, so we’re still
coming together.”
“Our coaches always stress to us to
TOT — trust our training. That’s what
we did today,” Maag said.
“We do a lot of talking before a
meet; we might tell a joke if we are too
tight and we definitely stay hydrated,
especially when it’s warm like this,”
Finn said. “The competition makes you
run your best; it helps you focus on
what you need to do because everyone
else here is good enough to beat you.”

In voting by Northwest Conference baseball coaches for
the 2016 baseball season. senior Damon Egnor, a pitcher from
Paulding, was named Player of the Year after being runner-up
for that honor last season.
Egnor was a near-unanimous selection receiving 199 out of
a possible 200 points in the balloting.
Crestview senior Colby Clifton finished second in the bal-
loting with Jefferson junior Jace Stockwell finishing third.
Paulding coach Travis McGarvey tallied 20 points to be
named Coach of the Year at the all-conference selection meet-
ing Monday evening in Delphos. McGarvey led Paulding to a
7-1 record and a co-championship with Spencerville.
Spencerville’s coach Shane Falke finished second in the
coach of the year balloting. It was Paulding’s 14th NWC cham-
pionship and Spencerville’s 2nd league championship.
Egnor compiled 2 no-hitters in his 5 conference starts. In
one of those games he retired every batter by strikeout. He
allowed only 6 total hits during conference play.

Wildcats ousted in regional final

HAMLER — Tournament time is win or go home and
that was the case for the No. 3 Kalida Wildcats and No. 10
Fort Recovery Indians on Friday as they met in the OHSAA
Division IV regional final game at Patrick Henry High School.
Fort Recovery broke open the game in the middle innings
and cruised to an 11-1 victory and a trip to Columbus next
week.
With a runner on second and two men out in the top of the
first inning, Jacob Homan lined a shot up the middle for a
base hit and Jackson Hobbs rounded third and headed home.
Wildcat centerfielder Austin Swift rocketed the ball to home
plate where catcher Jeff Knueve tagged Hobbs to save a run
and end the inning.
The proceeding inning-and-a-half were quiet, 1-2-3 innings,
but that would change in the third as the Indians sent 13 batters
to the plate and scored seven runs. Jacob Homan highlighted
the inning with a drive to right-center field that landed on the
other side of the wall for a two-run homer. Kalida was forced
to make two pitching changes over the course of the inning
and would use five pitchers on the evening.
Kalida managed to get one run back in the fifth inning
when Trent Siebeneck grounded out to plate Noah Lambert.
Lambert had led the inning off with a single.
Fort Recovery plated two more runs in the fourth inning
and a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to round out
the scoring.
“My hat’s off to them (Fort Recovery), they are one heck
of a baseball team,” Kalida head baseball coach Joe Recker
said. “We knew the game would be tough, but my goodness
were they good.”
The Wildcats struggled to find the strike zone as they
walked 10 batters on Friday and allowed a total of nine hits.
Defensively, Kalida committed four errors, three of which
directly led to runs scored for the Indians.
“It just seemed like we got a little rattled and that will
happen,” Recker said. “These kids are human beings. We’ve

played so good for so long, you just don’t ever expect them to
make a bad play, but it happens. It’s part of the game and that
team over there (Fort Recovery) is going to take advantage of
a mistake every time.”
Kalida turned to Owen Recker, a freshman, to start the
game on the mound.
“Our two aces were unavailable today and those guys are
real special,” Recker said. “It was tough putting a freshman in
that spot today but he has electric stuff. However, a good team
like this will expose that. They’ll (the pitching staff) have bet-
ter days and we’ll have better days. What a great experience to
throw two freshman in a regional final game. I hope it makes
them hungry to get back here.”
Fort Recovery advances to play in its second consecutive
Final Four at Huntington Park in Columbus. Last season,
the Indians were knocked out of the tournament by Newark
Catholic, 4-0. They will play Newark Catholic again on

Kalida wins semifinal thriller

HAMLER — Thursday afternoons Division IV regional
baseball semi-final contest between Kalida and New London
was not for the faint of heart. Especially if you were a fan of
the Kalida Wildcats.
The New London Wildcats had Kalida fans on the edge of
their seats in the sixth and seventh innings with opportunities
to overcome a one run deficit. However, Kalida was able to
work out of trouble in each inning to preserve a thrilling 4-3
win in the first of two regional semi-final games at Garrold
Parrott Field at Patrick Henry High School.
With the win, Kalida (23-1) advances to the regional finals
Friday at 5 p.m. where they will face Fort Recovery at 5 p.m.
The Indians defeated Ayersville in the second game Thursday
7-5. New London saw its season end at 24-4.
“Hats off to them. That is a tremendous team over there,”
Kalida coach Joe Recker said. “They made us work for every-
thing. Fortunately we were able to execute and make some
plays at the end.”
The last three innings kept fans from both teams on the
edge of their seats.
Kalida had a 2-0 lead going to the fifth as Wildcat starter
Brady Laudick (4 1/3 IN, 2 R, O ER, 2BB, 6 K) held his own
against New London. However, the visiting Wildcats were
able to get to him in the top of the fifth for two runs chasing
him from the mound.
Robby Webb opened the New London fifth with a triple
to deep right field. After a strikeout, Dane Matthews hit a
groundball to third that allowed Webb to score and Matthews
was safe at first when the throw to first base was bobbled.
That ended the day for Laudick on the mound as Austin Swift
came in to pitch.
A wild pitch moved Matthews to second base before
Nathan Thomas reached on an infield single to deep in the
hole at shortstop. Jacob Gerlak reached on a fielders choice
grounder to shortstop as Thomas was forced at second and
Matthews came home to tie the game at 2-2. Gerlak stole
second base before Ryan Lane lined a single to left field that
scored Gerlak to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead.
Lane stole second base and eventually stole third base as D.
J. Yates walked. Swift escaped further trouble with a strikeout.
“We were able to play our style of baseball in that inning,”
New London head coach Tony Hamilton said. “We are a team
that likes to bunt (sacrifice) and run as we have excellent
speed. We were able to steal a couple of bases that inning and
we had that big triple to start the inning. That kind of got us
going.”
After losing the lead, Kalida wasted little time in evening
the score at 3-3 as Trent Siebeneck worked a walk to start the
Kalida fifth and he scored as Trevor Maag lined a triple up the
right-center field gap. Maag’s hit ended New London starter
Justin Chaffins day on the mound as the Wildcats turned to
Lane.
New London pulled their infield in to keep the go-ahead
run at third base. The strategy worked as Lane was able to
retire the first two batters he faced on a lineout to short and a

groundball to short. Lane was a strike from getting out of the
inning as he quickly got ahead of Kalida sophomore Braden
Decker 0-2. However, Decker didn’t back down and battled
Lane until he hit a deep flyball to right field. The New London
rightfielder appeared to have a beat on the ball, but he was
unable to catch it as the ball bounced high off the eight foot
wall allowing Maag to trot home with the lead run.
“I was just looking to get Trevor Maag in,” Decker said.
“I wanted to do what I could for the team. Joe (coach Recker)
was willing to put me in there. Derek (Buss) has been hitting
well, but the coaches wanted to give them a different look
today.”
“I’ve been saying all year we have 15 guys that can get the
job done,” Recker said. “We have seen what he has done all
year in JV and his chances with the varsity. We decided to go
with a change today. He had a big hit for us in the win over
Leipsic Saturday. We keep telling them it takes all 15 guys.”
However, Swift had to work to keep Kalida in the lead as
New London loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, with no
outs, on a walk, single and a fielders choice play where Kalida
couldn’t get an out. New London was unable to score as Swift
got the next batter to groundout to short with Noah Lambert
throwing home for an out. A strikeout and groundball back to
the mound ended the inning.
In the seventh, New London had a threat going again as
Lane was hit by a pitch leading off and Yates walked. Once
again, Swift buckled down getting a strikeout before inducing
Daedrick Matthews to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the
game.
“He’s Houdini,” Recker said with a laugh. “They had the
bases loaded and he worked out of it. He struggled some out
there today. He was having trouble with where he was landing
and that’s something we will have to address (if he pitches
here again).
“I thought Brady pitched an outstanding game. Not many
people know he had knee surgery in March (basketball injury)
and hasn’t throw a lot of innings this spring. I felt he did a
great job keeping them off-balance. Our calling card all season
has been pitching and defense and I thought our defensive play
today was excellent.”
Kalida took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Siebeneck
opened the game with a single and took second on a chopper
in front of the plate. Swift followed with a single to center,
but was caught stealing for the second out. Jeffrey Knueve
gave Kalida a 1-0 lead as his groundball to shortstop was mis-
played. Decker followed with a single to center and Laudick
walked to load the bases before New London’s Thomas made
a fine diving stab of Lambert’s liner up the middle to end the
inning.
Kalida made it 2-0 in the fourth as Lambert singled with
two outs and took second on a wild pitch. Austin Klausing
lined a single to center to score Lambert.

DAYTON — Every competitor in the Division II Regional
Track and Field meet at Dayton’s Perc Welcome Stadium expects
to approach or beat their personal bests as the competition all but
demands it.
For an individual and a relay, that was good enough to book
passage to next weekend’s State Track and Field Meet at venerable
Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Van Wert senior Katie Trittschuh was third in the girls discus
with a PR of 125-1, almost seven feet longer than her District throw
(118-7) and also setting a school mark.
“I have always thrown farther in practices than I do in meets, so
I tried to approach this as just a practice,” she explained. “The thing
was, I fouled on my first two throws of the finals. I couldn’t foul
again. It also can be startling when someone hits one of the metal
poles and you have to calm down again. Fortunately, I was able to
calm back down, relax and throw my PR.
“I give a lot of credit to Alexis Dowdy; she had a lot of success in
throwing at Van Wert and is throwing in college. Last year was my
first time throwing ever; in fact, I had never even been to a track meet,
so she showed me the ropes. She really helped me learn not only how
to throw with technique but how to compete at varsity track.”
Van Wert’s boys 4x800-meter relay unit of senior Cade Fleming,
sophomore Thane Cowan, freshman Calahan Wolfrum and junior
Dylan Lautzenheiser grabbed fourth place (8:15.2).
That broke their previous mark of 8:25.01 from last week’s
Districts.
It was even a changed-up lineup, with Wolfrum, Fleming,
Cowan and Lautzenheiser the rotation last week.
“It’s something we decided during the week; it worked pretty
well today. We’re pretty confident however we line up; it just
seemed to be what we needed to do,” Fleming said.
“We’re pretty relaxed coming in. We’re out of school now,
which I think helps us,” Cowan observed.
“We knew we’d have to run well,” Wolfrum explained. “You
know the level of teams you face here and you know you’re going
to have to run your best to advance, which is the goal.”
“What was a key for us was physically, the coaches telling
us to keep hydrated during the week; that’s really important,”
Lautzenheiser added. “The second was mentally, just believing we
could do it. The coaches kept reminding us and telling us that we
had the ability to do this, so we were confident we could and ran
like it.”
Placing on the podium in Thursday’s event finals but not moving
on to State were:
The Van Wert girls 4x800-meter relay team of junior Natalie
Riethman and sophomores Nicole Clay, Julia Springer and Cassidy
Meyers, seventh (10:08.45); and
Elida junior Jessica Siefker, tied for seventh in the girls high
jump (4-10).
Those advancing to today’s finals from Thursday’s preliminaries
were:
Van Wert’s 4x400-meter boys relay of Lautzenheiser, senior
Kristofer Hart, senior Keagan Hardmon and Fleming, third (3:27.4);
Hardmon, fifth in the boys 400-meter dash (49.58); sophomore
Megan Braun, seventh in the girls 100-meter dash (13.08); and
Hart, eighth in the boys 100-meter dash (11.46); and

“We should guard their
graves with sacred vigilance
… Let no neglect, no ravages
of time, testify to the present
or to the coming generations
that we have forgotten as a
people the cost of a free and
undivided republic.” These
are the words of Gen. John
Logan, national commander
of the Grand Army of the
Republic.
Memorial Day for all sol-
diers is embodied in the words
of the oath that they take when
they enlist into the service of
the country:
I do solemnly swear (or
affirm) that I will support and
defend the Constitution of the
United States against all ene-
mies, foreign and domestic;
that I will bear true faith and
allegiance to the same; and
that I will obey the orders of
the President of the United
States and the orders of the
officers appointed over me,
according to regulations and
the uniform code of military
justice. So help me God.
Memorial Day, originally
called Decoration Day, from
the practice of decorating
graves, is a day of remem-
brance for those who have
died in the service of our
country. It was officially pro-
claimed on 5 May 1868 by
General John Logan, in his
General Order No. 11.
“The 30th of May, 1868, is
designated for the purpose of
strewing with flowers, or oth-
erwise decorating the graves of
comrades who died in defense
of their country during the late
rebellion, and whose bodies
now lie in almost every city,
village and hamlet churchyard
in the land,” he proclaimed.
The date of Decoration
Day, as he called it, was cho-
sen because it wasn’t the anni-
versary of any particular battle
and it’s also believed that date
was chosen because flowers
would be in bloom all over
the country.
The first national cele-
bration of Decoration Day
took place May 30, 1868, at
Arlington National Cemetery.
General James Garfield made
a speech and the 5,000 par-
ticipants decorated the graves
of the 20,000 Union and
Confederate soldiers buried
there. The national observance
of Memorial Day still takes
place there today, with the
placing of a wreath on the
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
and giving each grave a small
American flag.
The first state to official-
ly recognize the holiday was
New York in 1873. By 1890,
it was recognized by all of
the northern states. The South
refused to acknowledge the
day, honoring their dead on
separate days, Jan. 19 in Texas;
April 26 in Alabama, Florida,
Georgia and Mississippi;
May 10 in South Carolina;
and Jefferson Davis’ birthday
in Louisiana and Tennessee,
until after World War I when
the holiday changed from
honoring just those who died
fighting in the Civil War to
honoring Americans who
died fighting in any war. The
term “Memorial Day” was
first used in 1882 and became
common after World War II.
During World War I, the
poem “In Flanders Field”
inspired the placement of
poppies on the graves of fall-
en soldiers. Moina Michael
wrote her own poem:
We cherish too, the Poppy
red That grows on fields
where valor led, It seems to
signal to the skies That blood
of heroes never dies.
She then conceived of an
idea to wear red poppies on
Memorial day in honor of ser-
vicemen who died during war.
Moina was the first to wear
one, and she sold poppies to
her friends and co-workers,
donating the money to benefit
servicemen in need.
Shortly before Memorial
Day in 1922 the VFW would
sell poppies nationally. Two
years later their “Buddy”
Poppy program was selling
artificial poppies made by dis-
abled veterans.
Lest we forget.
This is the day we pay
homage to all those who
didn’t come home. This is not
Veteran’s Day, it’s not a cele-
bration, it is a day of solemn
contemplation over the cost of
freedom.
On Memorial Day, we
honor the sacrifices of prior
generations. We honor the sac-
rifices of the men and women
next door who have served or
continue to serve our country.
And we should pledge never
to forget the true meaning of
Memorial Day. We would not
have the privilege of cele-
brating this day and honoring
so many memories without
the sacrifices of those who
gave their last full measure of
devotion.
Let’s all join together to
contemplate the cost of our
freedoms…the freedom to
speak our mind…to vote…
to live where we chose…to
travel anywhere in this great
nation…the freedom to be
anything we choose to be…
the freedom to dream…
because we are all Americans
and we can come together, to
honor those who have given
their all.
Observe the holiday by
flying the flag at half-staff in
honor of the fallen, but raising
it to the full staff at noon where
it remains until sunset and at
3 p.m. local time stop for a
Moment of Remembrance, a
minute of silence to remember
and honor those who have
died in service to the nation.

founder Carmella LaSpada
states: “It’s a way we can all
help put the memorial back in
Memorial Day.”
A deal was closed Monday morning whereby
the Skidoo Restaurant on North Main Street
which has been conducted by Mr. and Mrs. C.E.
Sevitz for some time changed hands. William
Fulton purchased the business from Mr. Sevitz
and took charge Monday morning. Mr. Fulton,
the new owner, formerly conducted a dairy in
this city but for some time had been employed at
the Delphos Bending Works. Mr. Sevitz has not
definitely decided upon his future plans.

Chicken Thieves
Six young men living east of Delphos report-
ed to local police an experience in which they
figured early Tuesday morning, that may result
in the capture of two supposed chicken thieves.
The police have several clues and hope to arrest
the crooks.
The young men, Kenneth Peltier, Hollis
Morgan, Homer Redd, Ernest Redd, Ernest
Leist and LaVerne Hessler, were returning from
a trip to Lima in their buggies early Tuesday
morning. When near the Mennonite church,
about 7 miles southeast of Delphos and 3 miles
west of Elida, they met a rig coming from the
opposite direction. The driver refused to give
way and a collision between Morgan’s buggy
and the truck of the alleged chick thief resulted.
Morgan’s buggy and the horse greed itself from
the shafts but was caught before it had gone
very far.
During an argument with the strangers in
which the young men demanded that Morgan
be paid for the damage to his buggy, one of the
youth discovered that there were a number of
chickens in the rear part of his buggy. One of
the men had made his getaway right after the
collision occurred and the other fellow tried to
mount his horse which had become freed from
the harness. Peltier and Morgan prevented him
from making his escape in this manner but
shortly afterward, he manage to get away, leav-
ing the horse and buggy, both from an ancients
character.
The local police station was called and
policeman Sam Archer responded, making the
trip by auto. The 10 chickens and the abandoned
outfit were brought to this city.
John Bice of Lima, giving his occupation as
huckster, came to Delphos Wednesday to claim
the outfit, saying that it had been stolen Monday
night.

Stranded Vaudeville Singer Arrested
L.D. Rhodes, 32, a stranded Vaudeville sing-
er who was arrested by the Lima police for the
Delphos authorities upon a warrant filed by Ira
Cole, charging the man with obtaining money
under false pretense, is now doing hard labor
at the local American Road Machining Co.
instead of the Toledo workhouse. He is to work
out the fine of $10 and costs assessed by Mayor
Rhodes arrived in the city last Thursday
from Fort Wayne via a “side door Pullman”
from the west. He went to the office of the
local road machinery company and asked for a
job. He poured forth a tale of hard luck, stating
that his wife was lying at the point of death in
Philadelphia and he was trying to obtain funds
to get back home. Mr, Cole took pity on him
and gave him a job of washing his car. He
also furnished him with dinner and supper and
bought Rhodes a ticket to Philadelphia over the
Pennsylvania at a cost of $15.65. Out of the
goodness of his heart, Mr. Cole gave the fellow
$1.35 for incidentals.
Rhodes left Delphos but went only as far as
Lima. Here he attracted suspicion to himself by
trying to exchange his ticket to the Pennsylvania
station.

Two Farms Are Sold
Two farms have been sold by the Thos. J.
Welch Realty Co., within the last few days. The
total consideration being $11,600. The Anthony
Kill farm of 20 acres, three miles southwest
of Delphos was conveyed to Ed. Youngpeter
at $150 an acre. Mr. Kill purchased the Jacob
Mueller place a mile west of Landeck, consist-
ing of 40 acres at a price of $215 per acre.

Displays Apple of Record Weight
G.W. Laman, a farmer resident southeast
of Delphos, brought to this office an apple of
record weight. The apple is a Pound Pippen vari-
ety, topping the scales at 25 ounces and probably
takes the prize for size and weight.

Will Construct Canal Locks Wall
A concrete retaining wall will be replacing
the wooden structure located immediately west
of the first lock at Dolby & Morton Mill (Third
Street lock) Canal Patrolman James Kohn said
Wednesday. The proposed new all will about
60 feet long and 5 feet high. the present wall is
unsightly and does not serve its purpose fully.
The work of deepening the channel of the
canal is still in progress and force of 13 men
is now engaged in removing the mud between
Second and Third streets. A wooden scraper
devised by Mr. Kohn and shovels are being
used. The mud is being thrown on the canal
banks. The section extending from First Street
to the corporation line has been completed and
when this is placed in good condition, Mr. Kohn

Graduates,
you own
the world!
This weekend is a milestone
in many of our young adults’
lives.
They will move the tassel
across their mortar boards and
proclaim to the world, “I own
you!”
Their chests puff with pride as
they cross the stage to receive a
hard-earned diploma and proof
that they are ready for whatever
comes next.
Many will go on to pursue
higher education.
Some will enter the work-
force, using skills gained in
vocational classes.
Others will join our armed
forces to defend the freedoms
we hold so dear.
The last summer before col-
lege is a bittersweet one for
most. They feel the tug of adult-
hood and the freedom of making
choices (and mistakes).
Last hurrahs with special
school chums fill busy days and
nights while tuition and book
fees are earned and last-minute
paperwork is completed.
Parents watch nervously as
the pages of the calendar turn
one day closer to their graduate
and soon-to-be college student
leaving.

Other Hand
fill the weekends of the first
month with laughter and rem-
iniscing about the “good old
days.”
Many will make decisions
that will shape the rest of their
lives. Some will hold back on
the final commitment, content
to explore options.
I graduated from high school
in 1983 and from college in
2000 with a degree in business.
Yes, a millennium graduate.
Going back to school after
13 years was a bit difficult to
say the least. My study habits,
by that time, were non-existent
unless you counted the time I
spent balancing my checkbook.
But, it does prove that you
don’t have to follow a certain
timeline to get where you want
to be. That destination may
also change half a dozen times
before the bus stops.
It would take several hands
to count the people I know who
have gone to college for one
subject and ended up in a career
in a totally different area.
It’s not a bad thing to find
different areas of interest as
you move through life. It’s just
important that you keep mov-
ing.
So to you graduates, I say
congratulations. Enjoy your
parties, your new jobs and
last moments with friends and
family. Enjoy packing up your
belongings to head to college or
adding clothes to your wardrobe
for that new job or tying up
loose ends ebfore you head out
to serve our country.
Stick to your goals and
embrace the new-found free-
doms before you. Don’t be
afraid to tweak those goals now
and then as you find differ-
ent interests and discover new
things. Be focused — but flex-
ible.
Take a risk now and then and
do something out of charac-
ter. I’m not talking actions that
could jeopardize your future.
Just do something that you have
always wanted to, but never got
around to.
Soak up the advice of you
parents. They are not clueless.
I don’t know why kids insist
on learning everything the hard
way. A few absorbed words of
wisdom and life can be a lot
easier.
Oh, and, yes, right now, you
do own the world.
P.S.: Please take good care
it. We’re all going to use it for
a while.
No alternative but
to remember
I just ate a chocolate chip
scone/biscuit/cookie sort of
thing, made with some flour or
butter alternative. I was on my
way to the office kitchenette to
microwave my lunch, but instead
veered toward the tin that whis-
pered my name from its seat next
to the coffeemaker.
In about an hour I’ll find out
whether I should have kept walk-
ing. I ran my miles this morning,
so I’m not too concerned about
the calorie or carb counts. What I
am unsure of is the origins of the
alternative or what it will mean to

Last week I ate a cookie in
which avocado was substituted for butter and pistachios for peanuts.
That was surprisingly tasty and I didn’t want to take a long nap after I
ate it. A couple of days later, I sampled a couple of gluten-free cookies.
The following day was spent close to home and a good distance from
anyone decidedly in favor of being gluten-free free in future. I’m sure
there is a prescription for that somewhere.
Memorial Day is just a few days away, as are picnics packed with
traditional punches, pies, chips, and options for each made using
healthful ingredients. I will think of my dad, not only because this
is the fifth Memorial Day since we lost him, but because he would
delight in the latest food trends.
For instance, in the 1970s when running a marathons meant your
feet fell along a full 26.2 mile course, we would carbo-load the night
before on full plates of spaghetti and pizza. The next morning, we’d
cross the starting line with a rock-like gullet that growled at the com-
petition.
When Dad became a vegetarian, he harassed his brothers mer-
cilessly for eating chicken embryos, sunny-side up. Years later, he
subsisted on a diet of venison and bread soup when my mom was
out of town.
Dad was a connoisseur of chocolate and coffee, sometimes driving
for miles to find the best of either. He frequented the Lima Mall candy
kiosk, swearing with a hearty chuckle that the sugar-free chocolates
would clear any blockage within a matter of hours.
For the fifth year, I will visit my dad’s grave on Sunday. There
will be flowers all around, left in memory of other loved ones. As
for me and my dad, we’ll share a piece of chocolate in memory, no
alternatives accepted.
Well, maybe an avocado cookie. He liked avocados.

Grads learn ‘what really matters’ People Make

the Difference

Whether you know a young man
or woman who is graduating from
high school or college this season,
perhaps the most important advise
you can give them is to find men-
tors who will take the time to coun-
sel them as a protégé.
Advise them to value learning,
curiosity, discipline and character.
Urge them to be careful about lit-
tle things that they know can be
tragically important. Tell them to
treat everyone that comes in touch
with them with respect and warmth.
Teach them that style and grace are
essential to leadership.
Mentors will teach lessons that
are rooted in wisdom and character.
Being smart is not sufficient even
if it is essential. They need to learn
to maintain balance between short-
term objectives and what are always
called “what really matters.”
Former corporate executive and
Major League Baseball commis-
sioner Fay Vincent is a big advocate
of mentoring. He notes that finding
success requires a degree of luck.
He said old baseball legend Branch
Rickey once opined, “Luck is the
residue of design.”
Mentoring is an art and it
requires both time and energy. Not
every successful leader is willing
to take the time to provide explicit
counseling. Finding a mentor that
will take the time to share life’s les-
sons with you might be your great-
est blessing. Even better, cultivate
a team of mentors. You can’t have
too many.

About 30 years ago, Dr. Robert
Spitzer of Burlington, WI., was
president of the Milwaukee School
of Engineering. He delivered an
address to a distinguished audi-
ence at the International Science
and Engineering Fair in Milwaukee.
Following are a few thoughts from
his address entitled “Challenges
Facing the World’s Youth.”
“There will be obstacles. I know
of no leader who is not an optimist.
Success comes in cans, not in can
nots.
“Right now your education is
the most precious possession you
can acquire. Today’s young people,
given the right educational envi-
ronment, seek education in its true
sense. They seek leadership; more
are goal oriented, they are looking
for models and examples of sound
values; they are ready for careers
with a purpose; they want self-es-
teem of productive work.
“Your education should not only
be a classroom experience. It is
the sum total of all of life’s expe-
rience…the home, television, par-
ents, music, arts, friends, church,
community and work, in addition to
school itself.
“To me, education is not the
acquisition of knowledge alone,
but the development of experience
and wisdom, of attitudes, habits,
skills and knowledge. An edu-
cation is an ongoing experience.
Don’t forget to study the basics…
reading, writing, math, science and
economics.
“Learn that self-esteem can be
derived from hard work, entrepre-
neurship, quality work, craftsman-
ship and the dignity of self-support.
Remember that the highest priority
on this planet is for peace among
its inhabitants…for as our num-
bers and our technology makes the
world seem smaller, it is vital to our
own existence that we learn how to
live together.”
Dr. Spitzer said, “Persistence
is the quality that has helped so
many successful people become
a success. When you feel that
it’s time to quit, give up or throw
in the towel, 98% will do just
that, but the other 2% will keep
trying. In the game of golf, the
follow-through is the important
thing. My challenge to you is fol-
low through with life.”

My friend Ed Johnston said he
was visiting with a group of peers
when the conversation turned to
a game of “Questions That Haunt
Me.” Here’s a sample of the
responses.
Why do toasters always have a
setting that burns the toast to a hor-
rible crisp, which no decent human
being would eat?
Why do banks charge a fee on
‘insufficient funds’ when they know
there is not enough money in the
account?
Why do people constantly return
to the refrigerator with hopes that
something new to eat will have
materialized?
How important does a person
have to be before they are consid-
ered assassinated instead of just
murdered?
Why is it a good thing when
people say they ‘slept like a baby’
when babies wake up like every two
hours to cry and soil their diapers?
Why do we press harder on a
remote control when we know the
batteries are going dead?
Is there ever a day that mattress-
es are NOT on sale?
How do those dead bugs get into
those enclosed light fixtures? And,
why does your septic tank back-up
just as your party guests arrive?
Why is it that whenever you
attempt to catch something that’s
falling off the table you always
manage to knock something else
over?
How is it that we put a man on
the moon before we figured out it
would be a good idea to put wheels
on luggage?
Did you ever notice that when
you blow in a dog’s face, he gets
mad at you, but when you take him
for a car ride, he sticks his head out
the window?
If humans evolved from apes a
million years ago, what excuse can
you come up with to explain the
behavior of your daughter’s awk-
ward looking in-laws?
At the end of the game, Ed
offered this fact: The statistics on
sanity show that one out of every
four persons is suffering from some
sort of serious mental illness. The
room got quiet as each attendee
assessed the three best friends sit-
ting near them. If they seem okay,
then the loony one must be you!

A time to remember the sacrifice of our fallen soldiers

Memorial Day is about so much more than
summer barbeques and bright, candy-filled
parades. It is a time to honor the service and
sacrifice of our brave men and women in
uniform.
Established in the wake of massive Civil
War casualties, Memorial Day was initially
called Decoration Day. Every year on May
30th, after weeks of preparation, members
of the military – joined by ladies’ societies,
veterans, a band and schoolchildren towing
wagons full of flowers – would march in
detailed precision to decorate the graves of
fallen soldiers. Afterwards, everyone would
gather in local churches for memorial ser-
vices honoring those who gave their lives
fighting for our nation’s freedom.
Many of us know someone who once
served in the military or someone who is
currently stationed overseas. We keep their
names, faces and stories in our hearts as we
pause and give thanks for their selfless devo-
tion to their country, and we remember those
who have gone before them.
Ohio has suffered the loss of 275 brave sol-
diers since 2003. We are proud to claim them
as Buckeyes and humbled to remember their
courage. Here in the Ohio Senate, we seek
to pass legislation that honors the memory
of the fallen and lightens the burden on the
families they left behind. In 2014, we passed
a bill to designate State Route 67 in Auglaize
County as the “Staff Sgt. Sonny Zimmerman
Memorial Highway.” State Sgt. Zimmerman
lost his life while stationed in Afghanistan
in July 2013. While we can never truly thank
people like Staff Sgt. Zimmerman for their
tremendous sacrifice, measures like this are
a small way to demonstrate our gratitude to
his wife, daughter and all the loved ones he
left behind.
While Memorial Day is a day to remember
those who have fallen in the line of duty, it is
important to remember that those who made
it back home have made incredible sacrifices

Cressleaf groundsel is poi-
sonous to cattle, horses, goats,
sheep, and humans due to the
presence of pyrrolizidine alka-
loids (PAs), which form toxins
in the liver of livestock. These
compounds are not destroyed
by the hay-making and curing
process and ensiling may only
reduce the concentration. Cattle
and horses are more suscep-
tible to the toxins than sheep.
However, under typical grazing
conditions, it is unlikely that
livestock will consume sig-
nificant quantities because of
the availability of other higher
quality, more desirable forages.
Livestock affected by the toxins
will have signs of liver degen-
eration and failure. Symptoms
initially include depression and
loss of appetite and if severe,
will progress to neurologi-
cal signs with head pressing,
aimless walking, and stagger-
ing. Other symptoms include
weight loss, unthriftiness, poor
hair coat, anorexia, behavior-
al changes, sunscald, diarrhea,
jaundice, liver damage, and pos-
sibly death. All parts of the plant
are toxic. Drying or ensiling the
plants during the hay or straw
making process does not reduce
the toxicity of cressleaf ground-
sel.
Because of the plant’s tox-
icity it is included as one of the
21 weeds on Ohio’s Department
of Agriculture Noxious Weed
List (http://codes.ohio.gov/
oac/901%3A5-37). Property
owners need to be responsible
and control this weed in live-
stock production areas. This
is not a new problem, and we

secondary offense, local law enforcement officers will take the
opportunity, now through June 5, to participate in the “Click It or
Ticket” National Mobilization. During the campaign period, law
enforcement officers will adopt a zero-tolerance policy regarding
those who choose not to buckle up, including Ohio’s child passen-
ger laws.
“Too many people still take the attitude that it will never happen
to them. But fatal crashes can and do happen every day,” according
to Allen County Sheriff Sam Crish. “That’s why local law enforce-
ment officers are buckling down to make sure all passengers, in all
vehicles, buckle up – day and night.”

were seized when the pair
was pulled over.
Marcum, 43, was charged
with trafficking, possession
of a controlled substance,
having an expired driver’s
license and making a false
report.
A third person, Ricky
Peterson, 20, of Wayne, West
Virginia, and Arriaga’s child-
hood friend, is charged with
being an accessory after the
fact, obstructing and provid-
ing false information to an
officer. Peterson had been
questioned and denied any
knowledge of Arriaga or

Deputies from the Mingo
County Sheriff’s Office
were in Delphos and Lima
on Wednesday seeking more
information and a possi-
ble motive in Hatfield’s
death before they transport-
ed Arriaga back to West
Virginia.
Hatfield’s body was found
after his girlfriend report-
ed him missing when he
didn’t return home after the
weekend. Authorities traced
Hatfield’s cell phone to the
cemetery.

DELPHOS — The Delphos Rotary Club is gearing up for its
11th annual Music on the Park Series. Concerts are held at 6 p.m.
the second and fourth Sundays at Stadium Park and start on June
12 and conclude on Aug. 21.
First up on June 12 is the Juggernaut Jug Band. Jug band music
is a mixture of Jazz, Blues, Swing and Ragtime played on wash-
boards, wash tubs and other conventional instruments. The band is
known for its musicianship and incredible harmonies. They are a
sens of fun, nostalgia and great entertainment.
Geeze Cats will take the stage on June 26. This top-notch, pre-
mium show band from Cleveland features songs of the pre-Beatle
days of the 50s and early 60s: the Golden Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll with
some improv comedy.

She is the daughter of Keith and Carolyn Fischbach. She

was active in Liturgy Team (president, chairman of the board),
Junior Optimists (president, vice-president), Future Teachers
of America (president), National Honor Society (secretary),
Students Against Destructive Decisions (vice-president),
Mission Society, Crespi Society and varsity basketball. She
also participated in Parish Council, youth group, Allen
County Lima Youth Leadership and as a volunteer at St. Rita’s
Medical Center and K of C hall catering. She is employed at Geeze Cats June 26 Boogie Fever
Family Video.
She enjoys volunteering, camping, working with animals
and baking.
She plans to attend Ball State University, majoring in nurs-
ing with a minor in psychology.
