DISCUSSION FORUM
The Discussion Forum is available to all registered students of this class. It
is the online community of learners that you joined when you registered.
You may use the forum to ask questions, to seek clarications, or to start
or reply to topical discussions. Often, you will nd answers coming from
other classmates, just as you will be able to answer some of the questions
that others have posted. The course staff will be monitoring the forum to
step in and clarify issues. Additionally, there are a number of Community
Teaching Assistants who have volunteered to help respond to questions
from students and to assist as they can.
Do not use the Discussion Forums for questions or help on Graded
Assignments or on the Final Exam.If you have clarication questions or
other problems on these topics - email your question (stating the specic
problem number and issue) tosc2xhelp@mit.edu. We will respond as
quickly as possible.

GUIDELINES AND BEST PRACTICES

Week 2: Basic
Network
Design

The forum can be a very useful tool to get help! The discussion forum
helps improve your ability to search and talk about many different topics
throughout the course. Here are some friendly guidelines to help you
successfully navigate and interact on the forum:
When starting a discussion thread, it will either be a QUESTION or a
COMMENT. We prioritize answering the questions ahead of the
comments since these are usually holding someone back from
understanding a concept.
If your question or comment is on a specic Video Segment, Quick
Question, or Practice Problem, be sure to use its associated "New Post"
button. Also, try to be very specic about where you need help. Are you
stuck on a particular part of the problem? Do you need help
understanding a particular concept? What have you tried doing so far?
The more detail you provide makes it easier (and faster) for us to reply.
Before posting a question, check to see if it has already been posted.
Chances are we have already answered it! On each page, there is a link
at the bottom, which says Show Discussion. Clicking on this link will
show all the discussion on the forum associated with this particular

video or problem.
If you identify an error or typo on the materials, please write [Error] at
the start of your title.
If you have a question on a Graded Assignment or a Final Exam problem
DO NOT USE THE DISCUSSION FORUM! Instead, send an email to
sc2xhelp@mit.eduand we will respond back to you directly. Any posts
on graded assignments or the nal exam will be removed and the
student who posted will be contacted and dealt with individually.
Use a descriptive and specic title to your post. This will attract the
attention of other students having the same issue.
Reply to an already existing discussion if you see someone had the same
question. This helps organize responses and it makes it easier for the
staff and classmates to help you.
Actively upvote other posts, and other students will upvote yours! The
more upvotes your posts have, the more likely they are to be seen.
Follow netiquette or common writing practices for online
communication. For example:
Avoid TYPING IN ALL CAPS. Some people read this as shouting, even if
that is not what you mean to convey.
Avoid unnecessary symbols, abbreviated words, texting shorthand,
and replacing words with numbers (e.g. Pls dont rplce wrds w/#s).
Avoid repeating letters or characters like this: reeepeeaattingggg
chaaracterrrss
Avoid excessive punctuation if possible (e.g. !!!!!!!! or ??????)
To post mathematical equations, enclose the equation within dollar
signs ($) to activate math mode. If you want to practice, go to the
discussion forum and try typing the following into your text box: $x_i =
y^2 + 5\cdot y$
