PRINT YOUR NAME:

This is a take-home exam. It is due in class on Friday, November
1, 2013.
If you are writing your solutions on a print-out of the exam,
please use a ONE-SIDED print-out.
Alternatively, you may write the solutions on blank paper. If you
do that, please print your name on every page of the solutions you are
submitting, and please staple all the pages that you are submitting.
When writing solutions of each problem, provide careful
and detailed explanations of your answers. The exam will be
graded mainly based on the completeness and correctness of
your explanations, rather than on correctness of the answers

Problem 1. [10 points] Consider the set X = Z Z with the digital

topology T (see p. 45 for the definition).
For the set A = {(0, 2)}, find A in (X, T ).

Problem 2.[10 points]

Give an example of a topological space (X, T ) and an infinite subset Y X such that the space (X, T ) is not Hausdorff, but that Y ,
equipped with the subspace topology, is Hausdorff. Justify why your
example has the required properties.

Problem 3.[10 points]

For each of the following statements either prove that this statement
is true or provide a counter-example.
(a) [4 points] For every nonempty set X, equipped with the finite
complement topology, the product topology on X X is exactly
the finite complement topology for X X.
(b) [6 points] If X is a topological space, if X X equipped with
the product topology, and if limn (xn , yn ) = (x, y) in X X
then limn xn = x and limn yn = y in X.

Problem 4.[10 points] Consider the function f : (0, 10 2 ] R2

defined as

(x, sin x1 ) if 0 < x 1 ,

1 1
1

( , x) if < x 3,
f (x) = (3 + 1 x, 1 3) if 3 < x 5

(2 + 1 , x + 1 8) if 5 < x 8 1

(x 10 + 2 , 0) if 8 1 < x 10 2 .

(1) [2 points] Let Y = f (0, 10 2 ] R2 . Sketch the set Y in
the Euclidean plane R2 .
(2) [8 points] The function f is a bijection between (0, 10 2 ] and Y
(you can take this fact for granted and dont need to prove it),
and let g : Y (0, 10 2 ] be the inverse function. Both Y and
(0, 10 2 ] are equipped with the subspace topologies coming
from the ambient Euclidean spaces R2 and R accordingly.
Determine whether or not the function g : Y (0, 10 2 ] is
continuous at the point (0, 0) Y .

Problem 5.[10 points]

Let (X, TX ) be a topological space, let Y be another set and let
f : X Y be a surjective function. We equip Y with the quotient
topology TY .
Let (Z, TZ ) be another topological space and let h : (X, TX )
(Z, TZ ) be a continuous function such that whenever x1 , x2 X are
such that f (x1 ) = f (x2 ) then h(x1 ) = h(x2 ). For every y Y choose
xy X such that f (xy ) = y (such xy exists since f is surjective). Define
the function h : Y Z as follows: for every y Y put h(y) := h(xy ).
Prove that h : (Y, TY ) (Z, TZ ) is a continuous function.

Problem 6.[10 points]

Let T be the finite complement topology on Z and let T 0 be the
finite complement topology on ZZ. Prove that the topological spaces
(Z, T ) and (Z Z, T 0 ) are homeomorphic.
