Unit 10: Advanced Algebra Multiplying Binomials (Day 3)
Unit Essential Question Topical Essential Question
Algebra is a tool to represent real-world
world situations using numbers, How do we perform arithmetic operations on polynomials?
letters, and symbols.
Performance indicator(s)
• 9.3.2 - Operate with polynomials and simplify results.
Learning objective(s):
• Students will be able to multiply binomials and simplify the results.
Key vocabulary
• Polyomial, term, binomial, product, simplify, FOIL, area model
Activating prior knowledge
• Please Do Now:
A student was asked to solve 2 problems involving multiplication of binomials. She made a mistake in each problem. She solved
solv the first one
using the area model, and the second one using FOIL. Explain in words what the mistake was…then solve it the correct way!
(x + 5)(2x + 3)= 17x + 15 (x + 4)(3x + 1)
x x 3
x 2x 2x 3x 3x2 + 1x + 7x + 4
5 5x 5x 15 3x2 + 8x + 4

Agenda
• (5 minutes) Check homework for completion while students are working on the Please Do Now.
• (10 minutes) Review PDN
o Do any students want to lead us in the FOIL Man song?
• (5 minutes) Homework check (not time to review each problem) -> Give answers to homework problems. Elicit questions.
• (5 minutes) Guided Notes (mini-lesson)
• A binomial is a polynomial with exactly 2 terms
terms.
• FOIL only works for multiplying binomials,, but the area model will work for multiplying two polynomials, regardless
regardl of how many terms each
has.
• FOIL is an acronym for First, Outside, Inside,Last
• Beware negative constants and coefficients! If you are using the area model, make sure you include that negative sign in your model!
Example: (x + 2)(x – 3)
• (10 minutes) Intro to matching activity
o Show sample envelope
o Go over directions (see attached sheet)
Emphasize that students do not need to find all 15 matches. Green cards are easiest, yellow in the middle, and red are most
difficult. Students should push themselves but work at a level where they will not be frustrated.
o Remind students that they must show their work, but they may use whatever method they prefer. If no work is shown, no credit will be
given.
o Explain how students will be graded
 Rubric + ½ sheets + worksheet + bonus
o Pull out partners based on yesterday’s exit tickets
tickets. The “masters” are charged with spending extra time helping their partners understand.
They will not be required to complete ½ sheets, and will use the ½ sheets to walk their partners through the process.

• (30 minutes) Partner Work (see attached for details)

• (3 minutes) Clean up, collect envelopes & worksheets, pass out homework
• (3 minutes) Exit slip: Multiply (2x + 1)(x – 3) using any method.
Strategies for differentiation & multiple learning modalities
• Learning modality – auditory: FOIL Man song
• Learning modality – kinesthetic: Card matching
• Student choice - method: may use the area model or FOIL
• Student choice – difficulty: 3 levels of difficulty. Students choose the level(s) that are right for them
• Peer tutoring
• Extension/challenge: (2x + 3x + 5x +1)(x + 2x + 3x – 5) -> Use the area model to find the product
3 2 3 2

Assessment Strategies & Checks for Understanding

• ½ sheets (each ½ sheet gives students an opportunity to solve a problem of their choice using the area model, FOIL, and the ability to
check their work for bonus points.
• Exit slip
• Matching card chart
• Rubric

Matching Activity:

Directions:

1. You and your partner should attempt to find at least 10 matches. For each additional match that you find by working
together, you will receive an additional point on your class work grade. Match each pair of binomials with a 3-term
polynomial. Record your matches in the table below. Order doesn’t matter. Show your work at the bottom of this page.
Key: Green = easiest Yellow = medium Red = most difficult Blue = product

Green Cards Yellow Cards Red Cards

2. When you and your partner are finished, you should begin working on the ½ sheets. Get as many done as you can. You
may work with your partner, but you will be graded based on how many you complete at a high quality in your own
handwriting. Please chose problems that you think will push you to be better at this skill. (If you feel like this is easy,
don’t pick green cards!!!)

3. If you and your partner finish with time to spare, you may work on the challenge problem for extra credit.
