WHAT IS CAREERS4ENGINEERS?
Careers4Engineers (C4E) provides University of Maryland engineering students with one convenient
portal for accessing relevant engineering employment opportunities, from your first internship to your
full-time job after graduation. Through C4E, you can enter your profile online, upload your resume,
research companies, apply to jobs and sign-up for on-campus interviews, or track where your resume has
been sent.
The system gives you 24-hour access to engineering job listings (co-op, internship, and entry-level). It is a
subset of Careers4Terps (C4T), the campus-wide system. Any engineering job listed in Careers4Terps will
also be listed in Careers4Engineers.

GETTING STARTED WITH CAREERS4ENGINEERS

Activating your Account
To access C4E you must first have your resume critiqued in the Engineering Career Services Office (no
appointment is necessary). We will activate your C4E account during your resume critique meeting.
It is strongly recommended that all students attend the following workshops before having their resume
critiqued:
Job Search 101: Finding an Internship/ Co-op Job Using Careers4Engineers
Resume Writing
These workshops are offered weekly in the Engineering Co-op Office; for a current schedule, visit
http://ter.ps/engrworkshop.

UMD Directory ID and password i.e. the same username and password you use to access Testudo, etc.

Note on Job Search Fraud and Scams:

We do our best to screen jobs that are submitted to Careers4Engineers, however we are unable to
perform background checks on employers posting opportunities. Students are urged to perform due
diligence in researching employers when applying for or accepting employment. Do NOT pay for training
and always be skeptical of requests for money as part of a job offer. Payment forwarding plans, money
order deposits, cash transfers, requests for bank accounts, and social security numbers should all be
considered red flags.
If you suspect employer fraud or if you are unsure of any unusual requests, contact the Engineering Coop & Career Services Office at CareerEngr@umd.edu immediately. Please provide the employer name
and the job title of the posting in Careers4Engineers.

To apply for a job

1. Within the Job Description page, click on the Apply button at top right.
2. Follow the instructions in the pop-up box.
a. Select the appropriate documents (Resume, Cover Letter, Transcript, etc.) to add from your
uploaded documents or add a new one.
b. If the application doesnt require a Cover Letter, but there is a Notes box, you can paste a cover
letter there. TIP: Attend a Cover Letter workshop to learn how to get the recruiters attention!
c. Click Submit.
Note that for some positions, you will not apply by uploading your documents to C4E but will instead
click a link to the company website instead. Some employers require you to apply through both C4E AND
the company website. It is often worth the effort!

AFTER YOU APPLY

Once you apply for a position or your resume has been sent out by Engineering Career Services,
employers may begin to contact you directly to arrange for interviews. However, you may also want to
contact an employer to check on the status of your application.

Following up
Our Cover Letters and Professional Correspondence workshop provides tips on follow up letters. In
general, you should wait at least 7-10 days from the time you sent your resume to the time you call or
email. You can get the contact information for the employer from Careers4Engineers or the Engineering
Co-op Office.

Waiting for the Call

Make sure that your outgoing voice mail message sounds professional. If you share a landline phone, be
sure to tell your roommates that you will be receiving important phone calls and that they need to take
accurate messages.
If an employer calls, you should return the call as promptly as possible. If you wait a few days, the
position might be filled! Be enthusiastic when you speak to an employer on the phone. Don't save it just
for the interview.
If you receive a call from an employer that does not interest you, please return the call anyway. It is the
polite and professional thing to do. Simply say, No, thank you. This way the employer can begin to call
other students.

ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEWS
You will notice that some employers conduct on-campus interviews. For these positions, the interview

you are accepted as an interview candidate, you will receive an email notification (to the email youve
listed in your C4E profile). You must login to Careers4Engineers to select an available time slot for the

INTERVIEW CANCELLATION POLICY

If you must cancel an on-campus interview, please contact Engineering Co-op & Career Services as soon
as possible (at least 2 business days in advance) so that we can fill the slot with another student and/or
notify the employer of the schedule change. If you cancel or miss an on-campus interview without
notifying Engineering Co-op & Career Services at least 2 business days in advance, you will be considered
a no-show. You will not be eligible to participate in other on-campus interviews until you write a letter of
explanation to the employer. This letter must first be approved by Co-op & Career Services. Any student
with 2 no-shows will be ineligible to use Careers4Engineers or participate in on-campus interviews.
An appropriate apology letter should:

- Express sincere regret for inconveniencing the recruiter.

- Acknowledge that you behaved unprofessionally by failing to cancel or neglecting to show up for the
appointment.
- Explain your reason for missing an appointment/interview.
