Big Maybelle Smith was one of the coterie of powerful female

blues and R&B singers who lit up the scene during the post-war
decades, the highlight coming in her appearance in the 1958
Newport Jazz Festival movie documentary "Jazz On A Summer's
Day". Coming from a gospel-singing background in Tennessee,
she recorded for the King, Okeh and Savoy labels, scoring Top
10 R&B hits with songs like "Gabbin' Man", "Way Back Home"
and "My Country Man", as well as recording the original version
of "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On", later covered by Jerry Lee
Lewis.
This great-value 53-track 2-CD set comprises all her A and B
sides for those label from her solo debut for King in 1947 through
to 1959, along with the tracks from her two albums for Savoy
which were not otherwise released on singles. It's a thorough
trawl through her core career, and is a worthy tribute to a highly

Freddy Cannon was one of the second wave of rock 'n' roll artists
to make their mark on the US and UK pop scenes in the late
'50s, bringing a more Tin Pan Alley influenced style to the genre.
He had a string of hits on both sides of the Atlantic that included
some inspired re-workings of vaudeville standards as well as
material from the illustrious writing and production team of Frank
Slay and Bob Crewe - the latter went on to have huge success
with The Four Seasons.
This great-value 55-track 2-CD set comprises all his releases on
the Swan label from 1959 through to 1962, including all the A
and B sides of his singles, plus the tracks from his three albums
during that period did not otherwise appear on singles. It also
includes at the beginning, by way of a bonus, the two tracks from
a 1958 single by The Spindrifts with whom Freddy was the
singer. It's a thorough overview of the most prolific hit-making
period of his career and features all his Top 10 hits "Tallahassee Lassie", "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans" and
"Palisades Park".

On 4th July, 1985, in front of a million people who'd gathered in the

grounds of the Museum Of Art on Benjamin Franklin Parkway in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, The Beach Boys headlined the "Sea To
Shining Sea" concert, a free event which also featured The Oak Ridge
Boys, Joan Jet & The Blackhearts, Jimmy Page, Christopher Cross, Joe
Ely, The Neville Brothers, Sons Of The Beach and local act Robert
Hazard - composer of Cyndi Lauper's big hit from the previous year.With
guest appearances during the Beach Boys set from The Oakridge Boys,
Joan Jett, Christopher Cross and Jimmy Page, all on different numbers,
the performance had a real party atmosphere and with reported
temperatures hitting 90 degrees F by noon, it was surely one
Independence Day that most in attendance will still remember. The
Beach Boys were back playing in Philadelphia nine days after this event,
when they performed at the US leg of the Live Aid concert at the city's
JFK Stadium.

Bob Wills was one of the two country music personalities, along
with Spade Cooley, who pioneered the style of Western Swing
music during the 1930s and '40s, combining the standard
approach of hillbilly country with jazz, blues and pop styles, and
using expanded instrumental line-ups, to create a highly
distinctive, sophisticated, infectious and entertaining strand of
country music. Between 1935 and 1950, with a variety of
different incarnations of his band The Texas Playboys, he
recorded for Vocalion, Okeh, Columbia and MGM while
establishing himself as a top radio star and successful 'live'
attraction.
This great-value 53-track 2-CD collection cherry-picks the
highlights from the 300 or so recordings he made during the
period, including, of course, the twenty or more Top 10 country
hits he had after the establishing of the airplay chart for "Folk"
records during the '40s, with biggies like "New San Antonio

Bruce Springsteen has played over a thousand shows across the

last four decades, nearly all of which will live forever in the hearts
and memories of the fans who attended, and some of these gigs
have been to known to change, or even save, lives. However,
there are a handful of shows that are so well-known and
legendary that they are referred to simply by one name: Agora,
Passaic, and Winterland. These shows have become part of a
Springsteen fan's vernacular and used as a point of reference
when discussing just about every aspect of Bruce's career.
These abbreviations of course refer to the following concerts
Bruce and the E. Streeters performed in the wake of the
Darkness album in 1978 Agora: The Agora Ballroom, Cleveland,
OH, August 9, 1978 Passaic: Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ,
September 19, 1978 Winterland: The Winterland Ballroom, San
Francisco, CA, December 15, 1978 In addition to all being from
the same tour, they were also all broadcast live on the radio. And
they were transmitted through the surrounding areas -- the Agora
show was heard throughout the Mid West; Passaic was heard up
and down the Northeast, and Winterland was broadcast in
Northern California up through Seattle, Washington - indeed all
areas that had supported Bruce in the first five years of his
recording career, and through extended time between the Born
to Run album and its 1978 follow-up, Darkness on the Edge of
Town. And what has become evident is that more than just a
handful of the thousands of listeners at home were recording the
broadcasts to be listened to over and over again.

On 12th April 1976, Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band
released Live Bullet, which began their rise to international fame.
Recorded at Cobo Hall in Detroit the previous September and
regarded by many as one of the finest live records ever released,
the album reached No. 34 on the Billboard chart, with the version
of 'Turn The Page' included remaining a staple of classic rock
radio to this day. The album would remain in the charts for 168
weeks, and with its follow up Night Moves sold 11 million copies
combined.

Born to Clark Sr. and Mary Terry on 14th December 1920 in St.
Louis, MO, Clark Terry Jr. attended Vashon High School and
began playing the valve trombone at an early age. In fact, Terry
had already turned professional by the early 1940s, playing the
local jazz clubs. Having served as a bandsman at the Great
Lakes Naval Training Centre between 1942 and 1945, Clark
quickly returned to his first passion and began to establish his
prominence on the local scene. He started by joining the groups
of Charlie Barnett in 1947, Count Basie between 1948 and 1951,
and Duke Ellington between 1951 and 1959, where he earned
himself a good reputation through his stylistic flexibility, technical
skill and famed sense of humour. It was towards the middle of
the decade that Terry began recording his first album as coleader.
A master in both bebop and swing territory, Terry lent his

trumpeting talent to hundreds of recordings, as well as becoming
the first flugelhorn pioneer in the genre. Making his name playing
in the big bands of Charlie Barnet, Count Basie and Duke
Ellington in the 1940s and '50s, Terry would go on to share his
musical knowledge, mentoring younger jazz talents; not only
fellow trumpet players such as Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis,
but such diverse stars as Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves and
Pat Metheny. Over his seven decades of service to music, Terry
has been recognised generously albeit deservedly by receiving
over 250 awards, including being inducted into the Jazz Hall of
Fame in 2013, getting the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
in 2010, the 1991 NEA Jazz Master Award, sixteen honorary
doctorates and even a German knighthood.
Although initially brought in to contribute to Dinah Washington's

Dinah Jams, the same session also produced Jam Session,
which was led by the triumvirate of Clark Terry with fellow players
Clifford Brown and Maynard Ferguson. Despite his eight-year
dedication to Ellington's band, Clark Terry still managed to
release a considerable number of his own records as bandleader
throughout the decade. These would include such classics as
Serenade to a Bus Seat, In Orbit - which featured the sublime
piano playing of Thelonious Monk - and Top And Bottom Brass,
when the Clark Terry Quintet were joined by jazz tuba player
Don Butterfield.
Sadly, on 13th February 2015, Clark Terry entered hospice care

to help manage his advanced diabetes, and passed away eight
days later at the age of 94. There is little doubt that Clark Terry
will be remembered as one of the most talented and versatile
musicians to ever grace the jazz idiom, turning his hand to any
number of styles and practices. This four disc collection contains
his complete works as bandleader during the period that would
mark his rise to international fame, allowing him to break
boundaries and achieve accolades that few since have been
able to replicate.

Meade Lux Lewis was one of the leading exponents of boogiewoogie piano during the heyday of the sub-genre during the '30s
and '40s, sitting alongside the likes of Albert Ammons and Pete
Johnson, with whom he performed and recorded on a regular

He was the ultimate British Modern Jazz Legend, a player who

perhaps did more than any other in raising the bar expected of
UK jazzmen, and who in turn alerted America to the fact that not

The Nirvana set played that cold December night over 20 years
ago is included on this CD. Also included is a second Nirvana
broadcast of the band's show at The Palace, in Melbourne,
Australia on 2nd February, 1992, with the band showcasing
much of what was then their new album, Nevermind. Finally an
additional four tracks from the two appearances Nirvana made
on legendary American sketch show 'Saturday Night Live' are
also made available. Together, these vintage recordings
complete this career spanning package and provide the ultimate
collection of live Nirvana performances.

Until his untimely death on January 23rd 1978, eight months

after the concert featured on this two CD set, Terry Kath had
been Chicago's lead guitarist, having been with the band since
their formation as Chicago Transit Authority, in 1967. Jimi
Hendrix once told saxophonist Walter Parazaider, "Jeez, your
horn players are like one set of lungs and your guitar player is
better than me." Kath had to play both lead and rhythm with
Chicago, in addition to singing on certain tracks, and make it
sound as strong and powerful in front of Chicago's prominent
horn section. In this, he did exceedingly well. This show opens
with Kath's 'Mississippi Delta City Blues', originally found on
Chicago XI.
The show was performed on May 20, 1977 at The Nassau
Coliseum on Long Island. At the time up and coming superreporter Geraldo Rivera hosted an annual charity raising event
entitled "The One to One Telethon", to raise money to update
and/or eradicate the gloomy "insane asylums" that were
mistreating mentally challenged individuals in NYC back then.
1977's "One to One Telethon" featured this concert by Chicago.
Two sets with a break in the middle. The concert was broadcast
live on FM radio - WLIR 92.7 in the greater New York area.

The dog barking at the start and on occasion between tracks

(polite or what?) is the first clue to such an ambiance, but the
casual remark from Bonnie between tracks four and five "I just
saw Tom Waits stumblin' through the studio. Hi Tom, how's it
going?" - A Waitsesque growl in response reveals this to be a
real life scenario - is the icing on the cake. When later she jokes
"so many hits, which one to play," followed shortly thereafter by
"Hi Elton, Hi Bob, good that you could make it down," the dry
Raitt humour is in full flow. Bonnie introduces 'You Gotta Know
How,' another Sippie Wallace tune, by giving some background
to this little known blues performer, whom she apparently was
introduced to when visiting the UK. It turns out the two are now
firm friends, despite Sippie being in her late 70's - the women
have performed a number of times since on the same stage.

Born in 1949, Joe Egan already played along with his school
friend Gerry Rafferty in various smaller British bands in the
Sixties before they 1972 then succeeded with the creation of the
folk-rock duo Stealers Wheel. With the surprise hit "Stuck in the
Middle with You", written by Egan and Rafferty, they were able to
place the song in the top ten of the American and British charts.
Rafferty then left the band, leaving Egan the role of bandleader.
But even before the next recordings Rafferty returned to the
band, which meant that all other musicians got out except Egan.
The second album "Ferguslie Park " therefore was recorded by
Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan as a duo with accompanying
musicians. Two minor single hits were released, "Everyone's
Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine" and "Star".
Thereafter, the partnership between Egan and Raffety did not
longer seem to work. Before the release of the third album "Right
or Wrong", sluggish sales and artistic differences led to the split
of Stealers Wheel in 1975. The two songwriters went separate
ways. As both were still bound to complicated contracts, for three
years they could not publish further recordings. So in 1979 Joe
Egan released his first solo album "Out Of Nowhere", a number
of top-class studio musicians like Gallagher & Lyle, Henry
Spinetti, Dave Markee, Phil Palmer and Alan Parker
accompanied him during the recordings. The critics were
enthusiastic, especially in Germany ( "best folk-rock album of the
year", "better than Raffertys debut album"). . As Gerry Rafferty
solo had struggling with similar problems, it came quite quickly to
a reunion of Stealers Wheel. But the train had left.

"Werdohl - The best pop album in German , which has been

published on the market." (Music Express 1971) German Rock
classic after 45 years back on vinyl again! 1969 formed, IHRE
KINDER decided to connect songs in German lyrics with rock
music. Given the lack of acceptance among record labels - rock
music at that time was exclusively reserved English singing
bands - they produced their first LP IHRE KINDER 1969
themselves (supported by Jonas Porst). In 1969 the band signed
with the newly established Munich record company Kuckuck and
produced the album "Leere Hnde" (not without a precaution to
make an English version for all pieces). Kuckuck went on with
the next albums by IHRE KINDER untiel the split in 1973. The
songs of the band are known for their complex but also engaged
socially critical texts on topics such as substance abuse,
apartheid, detention and xenophobia. In music magazine Star
Szene '77 is finally read: "IHRE KINDER were the first German
group that played rock and brought German texts " "Werdohl"
was the fourth album and appeared in 1971. For Germany's
largest circulation music magazine Music Express Werdohl was
"the best pop album, which has been published in the German
language". This great album will appear after 45 years again on
colored 180 gram heavyweight vinyl, for the first time in
gatefold, limited.
