How Medicinal Plants Work According to Ayurvedic Knowledge

and Wisdom
Tuesday Mar 15, 5:00pm to 5:45pm Western European time
With

Vasant Lad: BAM&S, MASc

Hosted by David Crow

We are multi-faceted beings with physical, emotional and
spiritual bodies, intimately connected to the universe around
us which can be artificially divided into the animal, plant and
mineral kingdoms. Throughout the ages humankind has used
nearly everything as medicine, not always understanding how
or why they work. Ayurveda has profound knowledge of the
interaction of the world around us and how it contributes to
health or disease. This presentation will lay the foundation of
that understanding with emphasis on the plant kingdom and
its medicinal properties.

Understand the relationship between our physical,

emotional and spiritual natures
Understand the basic framework that Ayurveda
uses to describe the actions of substances on us.
Understand some of the basic Ayurvedic concepts
of medicinal herbology

Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S.) from the University

of Pune, India, in 1968 and received a Master of Ayurvedic

small town in western Maine, Deb began organic gardening
and studying the medicinal uses of herbs at age 16. Her faith

in the healing qualities of plants and her love of gardening led

Deb to found Avena Botanicals Herbal Apothecary in 1985.
Five years earlier, Deb lived in Nepal near three Tibetan
monasteries and was deeply moved by the Tibetan people's
commitment to ease physical ailments and mental and
emotional upsets through the use of plants, prayer and other
spiritual practices.
Deb received a B.A. in Human Ecology from College of the

Lifting the Shadow: Treatment of Depression and Anxiety

Wednesday Mar 16, 6:00pm to 6:45pm Western European
time
With

David Winston

: RH(AHG), Clinical Herbalist and Ethnobotanist

Hosted by David Crow

It seems almost everyone in our country is either depressed, anxious
or both. We live in a very stress filled society and the mainstream
solution is to take a pill. What if you don't want to take an SSRI or
anxiolytic medication, what if you understand that mental health is
more than a deficiency or excess of neuro-chemicals. In this class we
will discuss the causes of depression and anxiety, and how mild to
moderate cases can be effectively treated using the appropriate herbs.
The common misconception that St. Johns wort or any one herb is the
"depression" herb is ridiculous and we will look at the specific
indications of emotional dysfunction and the specific remedies to treat
them

The root causes of different types of depression

and anxiety
appropriate treatments for different types of each
condition
a new understanding of the importance of diet/nutrition,
lifestyle, family and community for emotional health

Amazonian Aromatics: rare and unique rainforest essential oils

supporting conservation and communities in the Peruvian
Amazon
Wednesday Mar 16, 8:00pm to 8:45pm Western European
time
With

Campbell Plowden: Founder and Executive Director, Center for

Amazon Community Ecology& Robin Van Loon: Founder and Executive
Director of Camino Verde

Hosted by David Crow

Starting in 2011, CACE and Camino Verde cooperated to plant
500 seedlings of Brazilian rosewood, a tree pushed to
endangered status by the perfume industry. Working in
partnership with five families in a Bora village along the
Ampiyacu River, they will soon begin harvesting leaves and
branches from these trees as one of the first sources of
sustainably produced oil from this still highly endangered
species.

For a sustainable harvest of aromatic plants for

essential oil production its vital to understand
ecology and many essential oils and herbal
products are not sustainably harvested.
Creating essential oils incentivizes tree planting
and can bring environmental stewardship and
livelihood together in Amazonian communities.
Working well with communities requires solid
communication, trust, patience, and
understanding of cultural differences.
Effective conservation of the Amazons many
treasures means active stewardship by people
who see the forests value. As Amazonian
communities participate more actively in the
global economy, non-timber forest products are
one way to improve livelihoods without resorting
to the short term gains of destructive activities.

Campbell Plowden

Dr. Campbell Plowden is a life-long environmentalist who

campaigned for whale and rainforest protection and

indigenous peoples rights with Greenpeace, the Humane
Society, Amazon Watch and the Environmental Investigation
Agency. He received a PhD in Ecology from Penn State
University for his studies on the ecology, sustainable harvest
and marketing of medicinal and other forest products with the
Temb Indians in Brazil.
Campbell founded the Center for Amazon Community Ecology
in 2006 to promote value-added non-timber forest products as
positive alternatives to deforestation. One of CACEs main
projects has been developing fragrant essential oils from wildharvested copal tree resin in the northern Peruvian Amazon
and rosewood trees planted in cooperation with its partner
Camino Verde. It is also working with over 200 artisans from
12 native and campesino communities in the region to
develop and market innovative handicrafts to create
sustainable livelihoods and support better health, education
and conservation. Campbell is an active member of State
College Friends Meeting, leads conflict resolution workshops in
prisons through the Alternatives to Violence Project, and is a
facilitator in the Team Development Center at the Penn State
Shavers Creek Environmental Center.

Robin Van Loon

Robin Van Loon is the founder and executive director of

Camino Verde, and has lived in the Tambopata region of the

Peruvian Amazon since 2004. A long-time student of
traditional and indigenous agricultural and medicinal
practices, Robin's work has focused on developing
community-based reforestation strategies to preserve
important endangered plants of the Amazon. He is a writer,

Important Herbs For Women's Health
Thursday Mar 17, 9:00pm to 9:45pm Western European time
With

Dr Jillian Stansbury, N.D.: N.D - Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine,

B.S with honors, CMA with honors

Hosted by David Crow

Plants can make ideal hormonal support medicines for
women, as we have co-evolved for millennia to recognize and
utilize the steroid-like compounds in plants known as
phytosterols. In addition to discussing phytosterols, this
session will also explain how environmental toxins contribute
to hormonal disease and reproductive cancer by binding to
estrogen receptors in human tissues, and ultimately
increasing the hormonal load in the body. Herbalists refer to
so-called alterative herbs as being capable of helping the liver
to clear not only estrogen from the body, but chemicals and
toxins as well. Stress and mental-emotional turmoil may also
disrupt hormonal balance and we will explain how herbs
known as adaptogens, can help restore adrenal health and its
impact on hormonal balance, while strengthening the psyche.
Such herbs can be specifically chosen and formulated to be
powerful and effective therapies for treating common
conditions from PMS to menopause, and less common
conditions such uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and
reproductive cancers.

Dr Stansbury will present 3 herbs in more detail, as examples

of how plants can have unique and specific chemical profiles,
and thereby be used in specifically nourishing and restorative

ways to support health and treat hormonal complaints for

women of all ages.

This introduction will allow you to start using these
powerful medicines right away
