ARRANGING TO TAKE YOUR FINAL EXAM

To qualify for taking the final examination, you must have successfully completed all required course work, including questionnaires and work
projects. You will be required to take your eLearning final examination via an electronic format. When selecting the proctor to administer your final
examination, please be aware that the proctor must have an email address, access to a computer, and consistent Internet connectivity.
To ensure proctor meets our designated criteria, please provide documentation evidencing qualifications (governmental issued ID, attestation,
business card, licensure/certification as applicable, etc.)
Unacceptable Proctors

Relatives or spouses/partners/significant others

Friends and/or roommates

Co-workers, supervisors or business associates

Anyone in the gem and jewelry industry

Anyone who cannot provide a computer with Internet access for up to 2 hours

Anyone who cannot monitor the student during the exam


This list is not all inclusive and GIA may deny any proctor that appears.
The proctor may not be someone working in the gem or jewelry industry. An exception is granted for those who qualify under the GIA Approved
Corporate Proctor Program. If you cannot find someone currently employed in one of the approved professions willing to proctor your examination,
please call our Education Records department at (760) 603-4000 ext. 7225 for assistance.
You can select one of two ways to take your final examination:

You may arrange to take your electronic final examination at GIA offices in Carlsbad, California, or New York, New York, by
contacting the office of your choice to reserve your seat and/or to request more information. Final examinations may also be
administered at any of our international schools. Please contact the international school of your choice directly for scheduling and
applicable fee information.

You may take your electronic final examination under the supervision of a GIA-approved proctor who is currently employed in
one of the following professions:

Certified librarians at a library, college/university, or school


School Teacher
College/university administrators, instructors, or academic advisors
Learning/tutoring centers
Educational officers of military installation or correctional facility
Notary Public
Certified Public Accountant
Attorney

Proctor Fees:
Some proctors may charge a fee to supervise an examination, and all fees incurred for this service are the sole responsibility of the student.

Final Examination:
eLearning Students (electronic delivery):
For eLearning students, the final examination will be delivered via an electronic format. You will be required to access your online course, and your
GIA-approved proctor will enter a password to open the examination. Your proctor will receive detailed instructions for releasing and monitoring
your final examination. You and the proctor must read these instructions carefully before beginning any examination; time limits and restrictions are
strictly enforced.
Final Exam Regulations
Student Policies and Procedures:
All required course work must be completed prior to taking your final examination.
All examinations must be taken at a GIA campus or with a GIA-approved proctor, unless your examination is classified as unproctored.
Examinations must be completed within the specified time limit or the exam will be null and void. Exams in progress may be declared null
and void if a testing session has to be interrupted for any reason, such as a fire, earthquake, technical difficulties, loss of Internet connectivity,
etc.
All exams are the property of GIA and are at no time to be reproduced. Copying, faxing, scanning, photography or recording of
examination questions or materials is strictly prohibited and will cause the exam to be null and void.
Reconstructing exam questions, sharing or exchanging examination information in any manner with other students, or obtaining such
information from any source, is strictly prohibited.
Be sure to bring a standard calculator, a No. 2 pencil, and a good eraser to the exam site.
Be sure the computer you will be using meets the system requirements as described in the Education Catalog.
Students can use a printed English translation dictionary during exams, but only after it has been examined by the instructor or proctor.
Electronic language dictionaries cannot be used at any time during exams.
Only standard, non-programmable calculators are allowed.
Cameras or any other recording device (smart phones, PDAs, etc.) are not allowed at any time during exams.
During the Diamonds & Diamond Grading final exam, you will need to refer to the D&DG Weight Estimation Formulas and Charts
document below. It can remain open on screen while you are taking the exam, or you may print the eight-page document in advance and have it
on hand during the two hour time frame.
Programmable calculators, hand-held computers, Blackberry devices, personal digital assistants (PDAs), cell phones, and other similar
electronic devices cannot be used during exams. The use of cell phones is prohibited during the examination period.
Personal music devices, with or without headphones, cannot be used during exams.
Proctor Policies and Procedures:
Examination passwords sent to a proctor must remain in the proctors sole custody and control at all times. Any deviation from this policy will
render the examination null and void.
The student must show the proctor proper photo identification (e.g., drivers license, passport, etc.) prior to proctor administering the final
examination.
The exam must be taken within 5 business days of the proctors receipt of the password. Exams administered after 5 business days will be
null and void.
o The exam must be taken on or before the course end date.
The proctor must observe and supervise the student at all times during the examination period. At no time is the student to be left alone with the
examination.
Questions to the proctor are limited to examination procedures only. The proctor cannot answer any questions that pertain to the examination
content or the responses to exam questions. If problems arise during the examination, the proctor must immediately contact GIAs Education
Records department at (800) 421-7250 ext. 7225 during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (PT) Monday through Friday.
If at any time during the examination the student is observed talking to any other person or using any type of reference material other than that
which is specifically allowed as described in the official exam instructions, the proctor must stop the examination and immediately retrieve the
examination from the student. The proctor must immediately return the exam to GIA with a brief written explanation of the circumstances.
Proctor must complete and return Proctor Affidavit to GIA or the exam will be null and void.

To submit a proctor request, you may scan and email the Final Exam Request form located in the Arranging to
take the final exam PDF to: proctor@gia.edu or fax the form to 760-603-4418.
