Projects Description
Scope
The project calls for building a 2.4 square kilometre dam near the Hammana Village in the
Mount Lebanon mountain chain that will provide a million cubic metres of potable water to
inhabitants of 35 surrounding villages.
The main components of the project are the construction of an embankment dam, water
diversion structures, and a network of pipes and canals to guide rainwater and melting
snow toward the dam.
The project will also include the procurement, construction and installation of a water
purification plant with a capacity of 12,000 cubic meters per day.
Schedule
The main construction contract was awarded to Mouawad Edde in November 2012.
The foundation stone was laid on 23 October 2013. Project duration is three years. It was

expected to be completed in Q4 2016.


Construction of the project has begun in May 2015, following two years of delays and
protests by local contractor Mouawad-Edde.
A joint venture between the local LibanConsult AGM and the Kuwaiti Associated Consulting
Engineers (ACE) are the projects consultants.
Construction implementation will be under the supervision of the Council for Development
and Reconstruction (CDR).
Financial Details
The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) has made a $19 million loan to
the government of Lebanon to help finance the project.
The funds loan will cover around 81 per cent of the total cost of the project, which is
estimated to be $23.6 million. The Lebanese government will finance the remaining $4.6
million and is expected to reimburse the loan over a period of 24 years.
