MASS SCHEDULE CHANGE

Last Saturday, Bishop Carl Kemme ordained the Rev. Mr. Gabriel Greer to the priesthood. He
also ordained ten young men to the transitional diaconate. Two individuals, close to Helen and
me, attended the ordination: our daughter-in-law, Caryn Normand, who works in the
administrative offices at Our Lady of Lourdes in Pittsburg; and St. Josephs own Pat Westhoff,
president of our Church Council, and his wife, Connie. Both parties described the Ordination
Mass as impressive and moving. Fr. Gabe had just attended the St. Marys-Colgan graduation
on May 18 and I had the opportunity to visit with him that evening. Hes a wonderful young man
who will be a priceless asset to our diocese. We share this pride and joy with his Mom, Cheryl, and
brother, Derek, because Fr. Gabe is a Pittsburg native who attended and graduated from
St.Marys-Colgan schools. Other young men, who are in the seminary from our diocese, also
attended Colgan and are members of Our Lady of Lourdes parish. While only one priest was
ordained last Saturday, we look forward to the ordination of TEN priests at this time next year if
all goes according to plan.
Since the ordination of a new priest is such a momentous occasion, I took this opportunity to
write about vocations. The term comes from the Latin, vocare, which means to call. The two
main vocations in the Church are marriage and the religious life, the latter including priests, nuns,
and brothers. When the Church speaks of vocations, it does so in a special way because it means
this: God calls--men and women respond. In other words, vocations in the life of the Church are
Gods doing. God calls men to the priesthood; God calls men and women to marriage. GOD
CALLS THEM. Man doesnt. Vocations come from families. John Paul II said that the home is
the sanctuary of life. Our former priest, Fr. Donald Thissen, said the following about vocations:
What does the average family do to foster a vocation? Do they speak of vocations in the home?
Do they pray for vocations? A group of Catholic high school students, when asked, gave these
reasons as to why many students do not accept a religious vocation: attraction of material goods,
a gradual decline in morality, an overemphasis on social activities, a lack of inspiration on the part
of the religious, and a fear of what others will think.
We should always pray for vocations. Who will make present Our Lords sacrifice or who will
absolve us from our sins with a priest shortage? The Holy Spirit, no doubt, nudges many of our
boys and girls to consider a religious life and follow Him. Families need to pray that these young
folks will have the courage to say yes to Him. It was the great St. Bernard who wrote about
powers and responsibilities of priests. He said of them: God has exalted you above kings and
emperors. He has elevated your rank above all other ranks. He has raised you above angels and
archangels, above the dominions and powers, and all the angelic hosts of heaven. Fr. John
Reinkemeyer lived to be 90 and he once told me that he offered Mass for his parents several times
a month since their deaths. I knew that they had passed decades before, yet their priest-son
continued to remember themwhere it matters most. What an investment those parents made in
that son! Long gone to God, they had left behind them a priest, who, day and night, mentioned
them to God at Mass. Its a wonderfully reassuring matter to know that you have a son who will
not forget, who will remember you in the most perfect way!
