1. Draw and explain completely Layout of Hydroelectric power plant


2. In a single stage impulse turbine the isentropic enthalpy drop of 300 kJ/kg
occurs in the nozzle having efficiency of 98% and nozzle angle of 18. The
blade velocity coefficient is 0.98 and ratio of blade speed to steam velocity is
0.45. The steam mass flow rate is 18 kg/s and velocity of steam entering is
60 m/s. Determine
(a) The blade angles at inlet and outlet if the steam enters blades smoothly and
leaves axially.
(b) The blade efficiency
(c) The power developed in kW
(d) The axial thrust.
Solve using combined velocity diagram.
3. A Centrifugal pump running at 600rpm,is working against a total head of
18.4m.The external diameter of the impeller is 580cm and out let width7cm.if
the vanes angle at outlet is 380 and manometric efficiency is 74%,determine
i)Flow velocity ii)Absolute velocity of water leaving the vane

iii)Angle made

by the absolute velocity at outlet of with the direction of motion at outlet


iv)Rate of flow through the pump.
4. A Double acting reciprocating pump, running at 60RPM delivers
0.00626m3/s of water. The diameter of piston is 30cm and stroke length
40mm.the suction and delivery heads are 4m and 12m respectively. Determine
i) Theoretical discharge

ii) Co-efficient of discharge

iii) % of slip

iv) power required to run the pump

5. Explain completely centrifugal pump with neat sketch.

UNIT V (STEAM TURBINES)

1. A single stage of simple impulse turbine produces 120 kW at blade speed of 150 m/s when
steam mass flow rate is 3 kg/s. Steam enters moving blade at 350 m/s and leaves the stage
axially. Considering velocity coefficient of 0.9 and smooth steam entry without shock into
blades, determine the nozzle angle
and blade angles. Solve using velocity diagram.
2. In a single stage simple impulse turbine the steam flows at rate of 5 kg/s. It has rotor of 1.2 m
Diameter running at 3000 rpm. Nozzle angle is 18, blade speed ratio is 0.4, velocity coefficient
is 0.9, and outlet angle of blade is 3 less than inlet angle. Determine blade angles and power
developed.
3.In a single stage impulse turbine the isentropic enthalpy drop of 200 kJ/kg occurs in the nozzle
having efficiency of 96% and nozzle angle of 15. The blade velocity coefficient is 0.96 and ratio
of blade speed to steam velocity is 0.5. The steam mass flow rate is 20 kg/s and velocity of steam
entering is 50 m/s. Determine
(a) the blade angles at inlet and outlet if the steam enters blades smoothly and leaves axially.
(b) the blade efficiency
(c) the power developed in kW
(d) the axial thrust.

4.In a Parsons reaction turbine the rotor of 1m diameter runs at 3000 rpm. Determine
the isentropic enthalpy drop in the stage considering stage efficiency of 0.80 , = 0.7, blade
outlet angle = 20.
